• How to test KVM guest CPU maximum allocation limit?

  Running Ubuntu 13.04 Host and vm Guest. Using virtio for hdd, nic. Max-allocaion CPU cores is 6, minimum is 2. Ive made a vm with virt-manager just to play with, and to test out kvm. Alright, I have a decent understand how the memory balloon driver works, but I still dont know how to test if the guest OS can utilize the max setting for cpu cores. From what i gather, the host will start one thread of qemu for each core allocated per vm. When i run htop inside the guest, it only shows two cores. (also here is the output of cat /proc/cpuinfo: https://gist.github.com/anonymous/93a361545130923537da ) How can I "force" the guest to allocate the other 4 cores so that it can show 6 cores in htop? Is there a way to do this?

  I have a Nexus One (with the radios for the AT&T network) which has an old beta version of 2.2 on it. It doesn't receive over the air updates, and I'd like to get it running something more recent. Where can I find a download for Android 2.2.1 or 2.3? There's a link to an updater on Google's site that's given by numerous blogs but it's always broken. It's kind of bizarre to me that this phone is stuck in an OS limbo since it won't receive updates and there's no place to download the latest.

• Can't Create New folder in my video folder

  My OS is windows 7 Ultimate 32bit. My video folder location is C:\Users\User\Documents\Downloads\Video. I Can't create folder in the Video folder or see the files i saved. But I can see the files in the root location of the folder i.e by going to the folder from My Computer. I can create and find files when I go to the folder My Computer>C>Users>User>Documents>Downloads>Video. This is an unusual problem I have never seen. Even being a system Administrator I can't able to fix the problem. Please help me out. Thanks in advance

• How do I add color syntax highlighting to GNU emacs?

  I have two versions of emacs available to me on a locked workstation: $ /usr/local/bin/emacs --version GNU Emacs 22.3.1 $ /usr/bin/emacs --version GNU Emacs 21.4.1 In both cases, my terminal type is xterm when I run either version of emacs. When I run the v21 version of emacs, I get syntax coloring for Perl, HTML, and other modes. When I run the v22 version, I do not get syntax coloring. I would like to migrate from the v21 version because the combination of v21 emacs, GNOME Terminal and GNU Screen is eating Ctrl-arrow key chords, which prevents me from moving quickly between words. (OS X Terminal and GNU Screen do not have this issue.) The v22 version allows use of Ctrl-arrow key combinations with GNOME Terminal and GNU Screen. How do I fix the v22 version (or ask my sys admin to fix) so that it once again highlights syntax and allows me to use Ctrl-arrow key combinations?

• Hibernating Ubuntu on EC2 instance?

  I've got an application I'd like to move to EC2. It will likely spend more than half the day completely dormant, so I'm trying to come up with a good solution for starting and stopping it as needed. It takes a few minutes to start up from nothing, so it would be nice if i could hibernate the OS for quicker resumes. I've seen a couple forum discussions on the topic of hibernation within EC2, but never anything conclusive. Has anyone found a working solution to this, or at least some resources that could help me out?

• Creating a vm using Hyper-V causes the host of BSOD

  Hi, Problem description: When I try to create a virtual machine, the host bsod part way through the process. From the logs in lookes to fail/hang on the "Creating new VirtualDisckDriver with new VHD" step. The BSOD error code is SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION : STOP:0x0000003B When the machine has finished restarting, it looks to have created the vhd and XML files for the vm but it isn't accessable. I have two server bothing behaving in exactly the same way, so I don't believe it's a hardware fault. Has anyone had a similar experince? How did you resolve the problem? • The path to MCSE:SharePoint. The Overview.

  There have been some changes to certifications recently.  And with that new challenges and requirements.  In the past we had MCTS and MCITP or MCPD on a specific product and that was it, now the story is somewhat different. You will need to not only know the product (yes, I am one that still focuses on knowing a product not the test) but also the environment on which it sits or lives (therefore Windows Server and supporting services). The requirements for MCSE: SharePoint now take you through the MCSA:Windows Server 2012.  Many have questioned this, I don’t. Why? I have seen plenty of “accidental SharePoint Farm Administrators” that have no background with the Server OS, much less with the services (like DNS and IIS).  Again, I am not saying this will guarantee knowledge but it does in some way require exposure to it. So, again, the next number of posts will be to provide guidance for the needed knowledge for the test requirements.  If you have seen the way I go about this, you then know I don’t focus on exam questions, but rather providing guidance to the TechNet and MSDN documentation to get to know the product.  I will also in this case go through the process to setup your virtual environment to play with the products and get to know them. Now, the requirements themselves are: MCSA: Windows Server 2012. In the Memory section, I see a section called Modified (orange) The official description is: Memory whose contents must be to disk before it can be used for another purpose. But I am still confused. What kinds of memory is Modified? In which case can we say that this number of memory is Modified? Can anyone give me a specific example? Is the following guess correct? When a program want to write something into disk, it actually write the content to an IO buffer, which is in the memory. After OS flush this area of memory into disk, the memory is modified or standby?

• How do I diagnose a HP Notebook which has hardware issues?

  My HP DV6t-2300 recently crashed while using FLV Player. It wouldn't start up after this so I had to do a hardware reset (remove power sources, hold down power button ~15 seconds, put back power sources). After this it would turn on, but start up would freeze in Ubuntu, Windows 7, Ubuntu Recovery Mode, and various Linux Live CDs. The only successful way to boot was in Windows 7 Safe Mode. The HP Customer Service was very polite, but they are trying to blame it on a corrupt operating system which is clearly not the case (since I have tried 4 operating systems and none work). I am thinking it might be the GPU since 1) I was watching movies when it crashed and 2) Windows Safe Mode might not use the dedicated GPU. I already ran Memory and HDD tests and there were no detected errors. Any ideas of what's wrong, or suggestions for tests that I should run in safe mode? Should I try reinstalling Windows 7 to convince HP that it's not the OS?

• Unity 3D does not work on Dell system with a AMD Radeon HD 6470M

  I am running 64 bit Ubuntu on Dell with 1GB graphic card. I login with "Ubuntu" hoping to see Unity 3d but it doesn't. Unity 2D runs instead. when I type in echo "$DESKTOP_SESSION" it confirms the Unity-2D. I've checked the System info that shows like : The graphics row shows itself as empty. SO I've presumed that the graphic drivers aren't detected and hence I went to Unity- Additional Drivers and installed the fglrx driver that the UI has suggested. Even after installing so, the graphics part in System info details shows nothing and still Unity 2D runs in spite of all the effort. Please help! How can I get my Unity 3D back? • DHCP server with database backend

  I have been looking around for something to replace my (ancient) ISC-DHCPd server. A DHCP server with a database backend sounds like a great idea to me, as I could then have a nice, friendly web interface to my server. Surprisingly, I can't any major open-source projects that offer this. Does anyone know of one? I have also read about modifying ISC to use a database backend...can anyone tell me if this solution is stable enough for a busy production server? Or is using a database a Bad Idea™ all together? PS - http://stackoverflow.com/questions/893887/dchp-with-database-backend looks like SO couldn't answer this old, similar question. EDIT: I am looking for something on a free OS platform, Linux or BSD. If there is something absolutely great that is Windows-only though, still interested.

• Is my HD broken? Can i use it for anything?

  Someone suggested formatting my HD so i wont try to read bad data. From what i understand the OS marks which clusters are bad and skips them. So after copying all my data i did a quick format to NTFS. I copied files with an error then i right clicked and tried to create a new folder. I was greeted by this message. I have 926 of 931gb free. Is my external HD broken?

• How do I mklink junction + move content from C:\Program Files to D:\Program Files?

  I have a few applications that absolutely refuse to install into anything but C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files(x86). Changing the registry keys for default install folders doesn't seem to provide any satisfaction and so now I'm wondering about throwing a NTFS junction in there to force these pesky applications to cooperate. There are files currently in use within Windows so it's quite likely I am not going to be able to do this within the active OS. Is there some bootable Windows 7 system tools that would allow me to make this happen? Seems I will need the ability to copy files (with permissions!) from one drive to another, as well as make the junction for Windows.

• iSCSI RAID1 on two servers, fail scenario

  Hallo, a simple question: Image I have two servers, each server has two disks in RAID1. Now I merge the two arrays with iSCSI to one RAID1 disk. Two questions: Can I do the merging of the 4 disks in one go? I can't image how. First I will have to install the os, and then the raid controller is already set up to RAID1. If a whole server fails the other server would continue working without any problems? Does iSCSI notice that the other server is missing and treet this as if the two disks were broken? When the server comes back online the data is resynced, as if I installed new disks into a array? Can I image that this way? Thanks alot.

• Windows XP Home Edition SP3 cant recognise PCMIA SD Card

  System Specifications: Laptop : Dell Inspiron 6000 OS: Windows Home Edition SP3 SD Adapter: Hagiwara Smart Media Adapter I inserted the card into the slot, windows xp recognises the device, lists the pcmia controller on the device manager list, an entry appears under the IDE ATA/ATAPI category on the device manager as well. However, the device does not show under my computer and the driver does not get assigned a letter number. I checked the system logs from the device manager and there were no logged errors. Checking the Hagiwara support website, the manufacturer indicates that the adapter driver is the same as the windows xp pcmia controller. Checking Dell's website, no specific drivers were listed for that either. General Search on the web indicates that multiple people face similar problems with their SD cards, yet none actually spell out the route issue that causes this. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for further debugging. Thanks in advance

  I have a VPS with A2Hosting for which i need to upgrade the OS. However, they've changed their VPS packages and forced me to order a new one. I went with an "unmanaged" package and have only just realised that they do not provide any DNS service at all, not even nameservers. Support tells me that "since your domain is not hosted with us, but with Moniker, you would not be able to use these nameservers. Your domain registrar should have a set of default nameservers that you can use, then create a A record to point to" my IP address. Moniker does provide for using their nameservers but i'm confused about which "pre-defined zone configuration" to use. They are: Domain Parking Domain Parking with Email Forwarding URL and Email Forwarding URL Forwarding URL Forwarding & CoolHandle Email I just want to use their nameserver and then create A & MX records pointing to the VPS. What do they mean by forwarding? I get the feeling it's a service that i don't want. Or, is it that i need to have a pre-defined zone only temporarily, and THEN set the A & MX? Which of these should i choose.

  OS: Ubuntu 11.10 Kernel: 2.6.37.6 Laptop: sony vaio vpc-z21x9r The problem: I can't change level of screen backlight; also can't enable wi-fi. While using 3.0 kernel everything is ok, but the laptop discharges too quickly. Results for lspci 02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Wireless-N + WiMAX 6150 (rev 5f) VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) there is no wlan0 in ifconfig -a too. I've fount that kernel should already have drivers for this graphics controller, but when i load up in restore mode, it writes "fall" while trying to load up some video drivers. To change the level of backlight i've alrady tried: xbacklight -set XX , smartdimmer -s XX and got this init_ nvclock() failed! also sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=XX with no results. As for wi-fi, i've found driver but i don't understand how to install it. Here it is How can I fix these problems? Thank you for your help and time! Also tried to fix problems with backlight writing GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset acpi_backlight=vendor Still no results. Is there any sense in recompiling kernel, I mean 2.6.37.6. Can it make any improvements in the situation?

• Eliminating "phantom" or "ghost" clicks on my Mac Pro

  Recently on my Mac Pro I have been experiencing phantom clicks and other strange behaviors. I have been rummaging through my system preferences to try and root out possible causes, and recently came across a strange finding in the Exposé panel (the keyboard modifiers are there from my taking the screenshot): I have had a Logitech 2-button mouse with a mouse wheel for years, and have never had a problem with it in the past. In addition I am running OS X 10.6.8 and have not had any issues like this up to this point. Is this a known issue? Is the extensive mouse listing a red herring? Are there any fixes for either issue?

• Moving a VM from MS Virtual Server R2 to VirtualBox

  I have a Windows 2000 Professional VM happily running under MS Virtual Server R2 on WindowsXP. I need to move it to a different PC and the only one available is a Mac with VirtualBox on it. Theoretically, VirtualBox accepts .VHD files out of the box, but my attempts to run my VHD on VirtualBox resulted in failure. The Guest OS just keeps rebooting. I've attempted to get help on the VirtualBox forums, and they said that the VM image must first be prepped for the move, but could not give me any specifics. Anyone here know what is specifically involved in moving a Win2k .VHD to VirtualBox on the Mac?

  I have a bootable ISO designed to be burned to a double-layer DVD. I don't have a double layer DVD burner, so I would like to stick the ISO image on a 50 GB partition on a USB hard drive I have. How do I get the boot info onto the hard drive? If it helps, it's an OSx86 Live CD.   As I mentioned the problem in the Title line..so no stating here once more.I have been using swiftfox for all other partition os without any problem i.e it works flawlessly on Arch,Fedora,Gentoo( my other OSes) ..but giving trouble in Debian Lenny.... Not yet find any clue. Please throw some light on it.The point is that I have had periodically prune swiftfox/firefox internal database; as well as upgrade and update empirically .   What software can take a snapshot of a Win XP or Win 7 machine -- burning all files into a DVD-R, and then be able to boot from that DVD-R can restore the whole machine back to that state stored inside the DVD-R? Maybe for Win XP, it is easier as the OS can be just 1 or 2GB on the hard drive, but for Win 7, a fresh installation is already 16GB on the hard drive, so it will need several DVD-R to take the snapshot? thanks. (any of these software are open source?)

  CE 7 introduces a new boot loader framework, BLDR (platform\common\src\common\bldr\). Some people like its powerful and flexbility, others may feel its too complicate as a boot loader framework. Despite to the favor, it is already there; so let's take a look at its features. Unlike the previous BL framwork (CE7 still provides it in platform\common\src\common\boot\) is a monolithic library, the new framework has more architecture structure. It not only defines main body but also provides rich components, such as filesystem (BinFS/FAT), download transportations, display, logging and block devices: bios INT13, FAL, IDE, Flash ( and etc. Note that in the block device category, the FAL is for legacy FMD/FAL, Flash is for latest MSFlash. Some of you may have encountered MSFlash MDD/PDD compatible partition is hard to created in bootloader and now it provides a clean solution! (Since this is a big topic, I will introduce it in future post) Today, I am going to show you some basic helper components - Image Loading functions. When OS image stored in the block device, it can be a file format, says your NK.BIN in the FAT volume or a RAW format, says the image is programmed to a BINFS partition. For the first one you can use BootFileSystemReadBinFile (platform\common\src\common\bldr\fileSystem\utils\fileSystemReadBinFile.c) and use BootBlockLoadBinFsImage (platform\common\src\common\bldr\block\utils\loadBinFs.c) to load from a partition. Need a sample code? No problem, the BootLoaderLoadOs in platform\cepc\src\boot\bldr\loados.c just provide a perfect example.

• Thinkpad Bluetooth turns itself on upon restart/hibernate

  I have a T400 with Windows 7 64bit. About 3 weeks ago, the Lenovo update pushed a Bluetooth update that added a 2.1 driver and device experience. Since then, my bluetooth turns itself on whenever the OS comes up (full restarts as well as waking from hibernation). I can turn it of using the <Fn>+<F5> Radio menu, but it just turns itself on again the next time. If I forget to turn it off, it just eats my battery that much faster.I've been scouring the web and couldn't find similar occurrences. Is this a hardware issue, a BIOS issue (although no reference to BT in any of the BIOS menus), a driver issue or (shudder) a user issue? Thanks for your help.

• Raid Shows Up as Multiple Drives - Can't Mount

  I have a single hard drive that the OS is installed on and I have Sil raid card installed with two matching 500GB hdds set up in Raid 0 and formatted- they're completely empty. For whatever reason they are showing up as /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc and not as a single hard drive. I used fdisk to format both raid drives as Linux raid auto (fd) but I cannot mount either device and dmraid doesn't seem to want to work, what step am I missing?
