  Hi. I have a question regarding locking in TSQL. Suppose I have a the following table: A(int id, varchar name), where id is the primary key, but is NOT an identity column. I want to use the following pseudocode to insert a value into this table: lock (A) uniqueID = GenerateUniqueID() insert into A values (uniqueID, somename) unlock(A) How can this be accomplished in terms of TSQL? The computation of the next id should be done with the table A locked in order to avoid other sessions to do the same operation at the same time and get the same id.

• Loop colours from variables for graphics.py [Python 3.2]

  I am creating a graphics program that draws 100 x 100 squares next to each other depending on the user-specified grid size. The user also inputs 4 colours for the squares to be coloured (e.g. if they enter red,green,blue,yellow the squares will be coloured in that order, repeating the colours). Is it possible to loop the colours from the variables the user has given? • How to resize a silverlight control to a full webpage.

  I'm currently using a datagrid within a user control. The datagrid resizes based on the number of rows, and therefore goes off the webpage. I've tried wrapping the control around a ScrollViewer, but in order to have the scroll bar visible and working, I need to set the MaxHeight of the datagrid. The problem is that I don't know what the MaxHeight of the datagrid should be because it differs based on the size of the browser window appearing on the screen. Any suggestions on how to determine the correct size of the control?

• Django Asynchronous Processing

  Hello all, I have a bunch of Django requests which executes some mathematical computations ( written in C and executed via a Cython module ) which may take an indeterminate amount ( on the order of 1 second ) of time to execute. Also the requests don't need to access the database. Right now everything is synchronous ( using Gunicorn with sync worker types ) but I'd like to make this asynchronous and nonblocking. I am very new to asynchronous Django, and so my question is what is the best stack for doing this. Is this sort of process something a task queue is well suited for? Would anyone recommend Tornado + Celery + RabbitMQ, or perhaps something else? Thanks in advance!

• Recursively listing, and storing, directory contents

  I know how to recursively list directory contents. I will be using Snow Leopard's enumeratorAtURL:includingPropertiesForKeys:options:errorHandler: method to do this. However I want to store my findings into a object hierarchy (of, say, objects of a custom FileOrDirectory class that has isLeaf, children, and count attributes). I need to pre-load the directory and file structure into such a object hierarchy, in order to do whatever I want with NSTreeController and whatnot. I guess the trickiest thing here is to get the children attribute correct in the object hierarchy. Any ideas?

• LBA48 in Linux SCSI ATA Passthrough

  I am writing a custom disk monitoring/diagnostics app which, among other things, needs to do stuff to SATA disks behind a SAS PCI card under Linux. So far I am following this guide as well as the example code in sg_utils to pass ATA taskfiles through the SCSI layer. Seems to be working okay. However, in both cases, the CDB data structure (pointed to by the cmdp member of the sg_io argument to the ioctl) has only one unsigned char worth of space for the number of sectors. If you look at the ata_taskfile structure in linux\ata.h you'll see that it has an "nsect" and a "hob_nsect" field - high order bits for the sector count, to support LBA48. It turns out that in my application I need LBA48 support. So, anyone know how to set up an sg_io_hdr structure with an LBA48 sector count?

  Hey guys, I don't think I'm getting it right. Here is my most recent query that I believe is almost working. SELECT max(sender_id) as sender_id, subject, MAX(id) as message_id, MAX(created_at) as updated_at FROM messages where (recipient_id = #{current_user} and recipient_deleted = 'f') or sender_id = #{current_user} GROUP BY subject ORDER BY max(created_at) DESC ; Basically the goal is to fetch all recent messages of a user, group them by subject, and make sure that the photo that is showing up is the other party's photo, never the current user. (also need the most recent message body and message count but that is for another time) Here is what I think is wrong. doing max(sender_id) is wrong, since the current_user id could be higher than the sender's id. I am using the sender_id in the html page to fetch the user's photo.

• Does a TransactionScope that exists only to select data require a call to Complete()

  In order to select data from part of an application that isn't affected by dirty data, I create a TransactionScope that specifies a ReadUncommitted IsolationLevel as per the suggestion from Hanselman here. My question is, do I still need to execute the oTS.Complete() call at the end of the using block even if this transaction scope was not built for the purpose of bridging object dependencies across 2 databases during an Insert, Update, or Delete?   Ok, firstly this is not about forms this is about consistent layout as a user explores a site. let me explain: If we imagine a (non-ajax) digital camera online store, say someone was on the DSLR section and specified to view the cameras in Gallery mode and order by price. They then click onto the Compact camera's page. It would be in the users interests if the 'views' they selected we're carried over to this new page. Now, i'd say use a session - am i wrong? are there performance issues i should be aware of for a few small session vars ( ie view=1 , orderby=price) ?

• Cross Browser input field width stylization

  Hi, I have a shipping/billing input form and I'm having trouble styling the input fields to be the same width... Here is a link (click one of the order bottles to go to the checkout page which contains the form) The Problem: -a field <input type="text" size="X" /> appears to render with different sizes in different browsers (see link). -In addition, select fields seem to render on a differently as well. -Chrome/safari do not seem to respond to the font-size property for select fields. Any guidance on how to stylize the size of text-input and select fields cross-browser would be oh so very helpful. Must I result to having a different sytlesheet for each browser... just for these input fields? -thanks

Hence I am looking for a solution to sanitize the CSS while still allowing as much CSS functionality as possible for my users. • Using Gradle with an existing Android project

  I have an existing Android project with the following structure: - ProjectName -- AndroidManifest.xml -- local.properties -- project.properties -- assets -- libs (containing all jars) -- modules (containing all library projects my project depends on) -- res -- src ---- com/namespace/projectname (all my classes including main activity are here) I haven't been using any specific build system to build my project other than the one provided by default with the Android Studio IDE (though the project was originally created with IntelliJ CE. I would like to use Gradle with the android plugin and do some work on my build process. I have tried several configurations in order to achieve this and have failed to complete a successful build every time. What's the recommended approach in this scenario? should I change my project structure? or is it possible to configure gradle using the existing structure? Any help would be greatly appreciated. • How do you use Exslt.dyn (especially the 'evaluate' method) in Umbraco?

  I am trying to execute the string contained in an XSL variable. Umbraco has hooks for several Exslt pieces, but it seems the Exslt.dyn (Exslt.dynamic) is not one of them. How do you add it in? Acceptable methods (in order of preference: Writing your own XSLT extension (possibly using existing Umbraco code for Exslt Dynamic). Uploading the XSL from http://www.exslt.org/dyn/functions/evaluate/index.html into Umbraco. Modifying the Umbraco source to add it (possibly using existing Umbraco code for Exslt Dynamic). The reason I mention Exslt Dyanmic is because some Umbraco XSLT sources show a reference that I am assuming existing in some versions of Umbraco. I cannot find it in the source code, however.   Hi! I'm looking for a solution (PHP/Symfony/Doctrine) for the following problem. I'm creating a table called 'pages'. This table is a nested set. I also want to create a table called 'pages_published' which has ofcourse also a nested set. Once i create a record in table 'pages' at some point i want to publish this to the 'pages_published)-table. How do make sure the sort order and the level in the structure keeps ok. Is there some standard solution for my approach?

• Using javax.script or Rhino to run javascript in Java with browser context (e.g. envjs)?

  I am trying to run Protovis javascript from a Java program using javax.script: ScriptEngineManager factory = new ScriptEngineManager(); ScriptEngine engine = factory.getEngineByName("JavaScript"); engine.eval(new java.io.FileReader("protovis-d3.1.js")); In order to run this, the JavaScript engine needs to have all the context of a web browser. The best option for this seems to be envjs. Unfortunately it seems that the version of Rhino included in the JVM isn't up to date and doesn't include everything that's necessary for envjs. Has anyone had any success working with a browser context from javax.script, or am I missing something? This is related to this question: "Can I create a ‘window’ object for javascript running in the Java6 Rhino Script Engine".

  Hi everyone , I'm racking my brain in order to solve a knotty problem (at least for me) While playing an audio file (using java) I want the signal amplitude to be displayed against time. I mean I'd like to implement a small panel showing a sort of oscilloscope .(SPECTRUM ANALYZER) The audio signal should be viewed in the time domain (vertical axis is amplitude and the horizontal axis is time) Does anyone know how to do it?   I have a Windows XP and I just installed about 12 new programs. Big mistake! Before I installed these programs, my internet connection was running great. But now after installing and restarting my laptop, the internet is crawling. How can I see what was changed? Hint: prior to installing these 12 programs, I installed IE version 8. So probably if I removed that it would fix it, but the problem is I need IE in order for my SQL/C# web application to work properly.

• Lexographical sorting problem

  I'm doing a problem that says concatenate the words to generate the lexicographically lowest possible string. from a competition. Take for example this string: jibw ji jp bw jibw The actual output turns out to be: bw jibw jibw ji jp When I do sorting on this, I get: bw ji jibw jibw jp. Does this mean that this is not sorting? If it is sorting, does lexicographic sorting take into consideration pushing the shorter strings to the back or something? I've been doing some reading on lexigographical order and I dont see any point or scenarios on which this is used, do you have any?

  Hi, I'm trying to modify Guido's multimethod (dynamic dispatch code): http://www.artima.com/weblogs/viewpost.jsp?thread=101605 to handle inheritance and possibly out of order arguments. e.g. (inheritance problem) class A(object): pass class B(A): pass @multimethod(A,A) def foo(arg1,arg2): print 'works' foo(A(),A()) #works foo(A(),B()) #fails Is there a better way than iteratively checking for the super() of each item until one is found? e.g. (argument ordering problem) I was thinking of this from a collision detection standpoint. e.g. foo(Car(),Truck()) and foo(Truck(), Car()) and should both trigger foo(Car,Truck) # Note: @multimethod(Truck,Car) will throw an exception if @multimethod(Car,Truck) was registered first? I'm looking specifically for an 'elegant' solution. I know that I could just brute force my way through all the possibilities, but I'm trying to avoid that. I just wanted to get some input/ideas before sitting down and pounding out a solution. Thanks

Is it supposed to generate some data structure using all the css styles on a page and use that for rendering? Or does it render using style information in the order it sees?

• Connecting std::basic_ofstream<unsigned char> to a FIFO. bad_cast exceptions

  Using gcc 4.4.3 on Linux 2.6.32, I get bad_cast exceptions when connecting std::basic_ofstream to a FIFO. Stepping though the debugger, I can see that the error is generated at various places in the standard library because the _M_codecvt member of the stream or filebuf object is NULL. Exactly where it happens depends on the order of operations, but it appears to be the same cause in each. So am I doing something fundamentally stupid here? ofstream and ifstream work fine. Is there some reason that you shouldn't attach a stream of anything besides char to a FIFO? Thanks in advance.
