• Removing existing filtered pages from Google's index: noindex / 301 / canonical to non-filtered page?

    - by Noam
    I've decided to remove some of my site's pages from the Google index to focus more of the indexed pages on higher quality pages. The pages I'm going to remove are already in the index. These removed pages are filtered pages which will continue to exist, I just don't want them in the google index because they add little quality to the same page without any filter selected. I've added in webmaster tools specification of narrow for the parameters that set these filters, but it doesn't seem this changes anything in how he handles these pages. So I'm considering three options: Adding to the html header of these filtered pages 301 to the non-filtered page that contains the most similar information and will remain in the index Canonical tag. Which I'm not sure is exactly the mainstream use case, as these aren't really the same pages. Which should I use?

  • Does Submit to Index on a page with new content update Content Keywords for the site?

    - by Dan Kanze
    Using Google Webmaster Tools I'm trying to update the Content Keywords of my site. I'm confused about the relationship between Submit to Index and Content Keywords Does Fetch as Google -- Submit to Index on a previously existing indexed page containing new content expidite updating the Content Keywords crawled by the real Google bot? Does Submit to Index only submit new URL's so that previously indexed URL's still point to the older cached version until Google crawls specifically for new content on its own? Does Submit to Index have anything to do with Content Keywords or crawling new content being a previously indexed page or never been indexed page?

  • Common reasons for the ‘Sys is undefined’ error in ASP.NET Ajax applications

      In this blog I will try to summarize the most common reasons for getting the famous 'Sys is undefined' error when running an Ajax enabled web site or application (there are almost one milion results on Google for that phrase). Where does it come from? In every Ajax web pages source you will see a code like this: This is the initialization script of the ScriptManager. So, if for some reason the Sys namespace is not available when the code executes you get the Sys is undefined error. Here are the most common reasons and solutions for that problem: 1. The error occurs when you have added a control from RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX, but your application is not configured to use ASP.NET AJAX. For example, in VS 2005 you created a new Blank Site instead of a new Ajax-Enabled Web Site and the Sys is undefined message pops up. To fix it you need to follow the steps described at Configuring ASP.NET Ajax article (check the topic called Adding ASP.NET AJAX Configuration Elements to an Existing Web Site) or simply create the Ajax-Enabled Web Site. You can also check my other blog post on the matter: Visual Studio 2008: Where is the new ASP.NET Ajax-Enabled Web Site template? 2. Authentication - as the website denies access to all pages to unauthorized users, access to the Telerik.Web.UI.WebResource.axd handler is unauthorized (this is the default handler of RadScriptManager). This causes the handler to serve the content of the login page instead of the combined scripts, hence the error. To solve it - add a <location> section to the application configuration file to allow access to Telerik.Web.UI.WebResource.axd to all users, like: <configuration> ... <location path="Telerik.Web.UI.WebResource.axd"> <system.web> <authorization> <allow users="*"/> </authorization> </system.web> </location> ... </configuration> Note that the access to the standard ScriptResource.axd and WebResource.axd is automatically allowed for all users (authenticated and unauthenticated), so if you use the ScriptManager instead of RadScriptManager - you will not face this problem. The authentication problem does not manifest when you disable script combining or use the CDN. Adding the above configuration section will make it work with RadScriptManagers combined script. 3. The IE6 browser fails to load the compressed script. The problem does not appear in any other browser. There is a well known bug in the older versions of IE6 which lose the first 2,048 bytes of data that are sent back from a Web server that uses HTTP compression. Latest versions of RadScriptManager does not compress the output at all if the client is IE6, but in the previous versions you need to manually disable the output compression to prevent the error. So, if you get the Sys is undefined error in IE6 - update to the latest version of RadControls or simply disable the output compression. 4. Requests to the *.axd files returns Error Code 404 - Not Found. This could be fixed easily: Check in the IIS management console that the .axd extension (the default HTTP handler extension) is allowed: Also check if the Verify if file exists checkbox is unchecked (click on the Edit button appearing in the previous screenshot to check). More information can be found in our troubleshooting article and from the ASP.NET QA team blog post 5. The virtual directory in IIS is not marked as Web Application. Converting it to Web Application should fix the problem. 6. Check for the <xhtmlConformance mode="Legacy"/> option in your web.config and remove it. It would be rather rare to become a victim of this exact case, but still have it in mind. Scott Guthrie describes it in more details In the above points I mentioned several times the terms web resources, javascript output, compressed script. If you want to find out more about these please see the Web Resources Demystified series of my friend and colleague Atanas Korchev I hope that one of the above solutions will help you get rid of the Sys is undefined error. Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Rewrite rule to show as directory using .htaccess

    - by chanchal1987
    I want to implement a rewrite rule in my .htaccess file to show a specific url as a directory of my server. See the code below I written, RewriteRule ^(.*)/$ ?page=$1 [NC] This will rewrites urls like www.mysite.com/abc/ to www.mysite.com/index.php?page=abc. But if I request www.mysite.com/abc then it is throwing an 404 error. How can I write a rewrite rule which will match www.mysite.com/abc and www.mysite.com/abc/ both? Edit: My current .htaccess file (After Litso's answer's 3rd revision) is like below: ## ErrorDocument 401 /index.php?error=401 ErrorDocument 400 /index.php?error=400 ErrorDocument 403 /index.php?error=403 ErrorDocument 500 /index.php?error=500 ErrorDocument 404 /index.php?error=404 DirectoryIndex index.htm index.html index.php RewriteEngine on RewriteBase / Options +FollowSymlinks RewriteRule ^(.+)\.html?$ $1.php RewriteCond !-d RewriteRule ^(.*)/$ ?page=$1 [NC,L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !index.php RewriteRule ^(.*)$ ?page=$1 [NC,L] ##

  • I've changed my URL schema. How do I tell Google to index the new schema and forget the old one?

    - by growse
    I had a site where the urls were constructed like this /index.php/Topic /index.php/AnotherTopic These were indexed in google, and search results returned that pointed to these. However, I've recently replatformed that site, and reconfigured it so the above urls would be: /index.php?title=Topic /index.php?title=AnotherTopic The original urls are returning 404s. The site is linking to the correct URL schema internally, but Google is retaining the original schema in its search results. I've updated and resubmitted the sitemap which only contains the new schema. Also, Google's webmasters tool is going slightly bananas at the fact there's now a spike in 404 errors in its crawl results. What would be the best approach to get Google to 'forget' about the old schema, and instead index the new schema? Should I try blocking /index.php/ in robots.txt? Should I be returning 301 codes instead of 404 for the original urls?

  • Designing a user-defined list to be stored in a relational database - Should I include user index?

    - by Zaemz
    By index, I mean, as the user creates the list, each item receives an integer index for its place in that particular list. Since there will be a table of ListItems, I'd prefer to avoid using the name "Index" for the field. Then I was thinking - should I even include the list index in the database? I figured I would because the list would be created in the same fashion every time, then. Or I could order the list for the user based on its actual primary key, since the list items are created in succession anyway... What should I do?

  • How to include the login form on the Home index page in MVC

    - by Bernard Larouche
    Hi guys I really need your help for this. I am relatively new to programming and I need help to something that could be easy for a experienced programmer. I would like to get the login form that we get for free in an MVC application on the left sidebar of my Home index page instead of the usual Account/Login page. I am facing some problems. First I need a product object to be displayed on my Home Index page as well. What I did is that I added a product object to the LogOnModel that they provide in the AccountModels class and I created a UserControl (partial view) copying the content of the LogOn.aspx view. Now my Home index.aspx as well as my partial view inherits the LogOnModel class. I can see the Login form on my Home Index page as well as my product object BUT the login Form is never empty. The last username and password always appear there. I know I must have forgotten something or have done something wrong or the way did it is completely wrong !! Please could you give me some advice Thks <%@ Control Language="C#" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<CoderForTradersSite.Models.LogOnModel>" %>
Login Form

Please enter your username and password. <%= Html.ActionLink("Register", "Register") %> if you don't have an account.
<% using (Html.BeginForm()) { %> <%= Html.ValidationSummary(true, "Login was unsuccessful. Please correct the errors and try again.") %>
<fieldset> <legend>Account Information</legend>
<%= Html.LabelFor(m => m.UserName) %>

<%= Html.TextBoxFor(m => m.UserName) %> <%= Html.ValidationMessageFor(m => m.UserName) %>

<%= Html.LabelFor(m => m.Password) %>

<%= Html.PasswordFor(m => m.Password) %> <%= Html.ValidationMessageFor(m => m.Password) %>

<%= Html.CheckBoxFor(m => m.RememberMe) %> <%= Html.LabelFor(m => m.RememberMe) %>

</fieldset>
<% } %>

  • Form data sent to Node via Post is undefined

    - by user185812
    I know this has been asked countless times on here, however I tried all the solutions and am still having the issue. Most people say to set the content-type (which I did) and to name the inputs that I wish to Post to node. I have done both of these things, yet still get "undefined" when trying to send data from an HTML form to node. JADE Templating HTML Code (Sorry I can't seem to get the indenting to show up here, however I think I should leave the code intact when posting here instead of converting it to normal HTML so that if the error is in here, you are still able to help) Form(action="/registration", method="post", enctype="application/x-www-form-urlencoded") div(class="control-group-Username") label(class="control-group", for="username") Username: div.controls input#Username(id="Username", type="text", placeholder="Username Here", maxlength="23", name="username") //Other divs and stuff here button.btn#submit_button(type="submit") Submit app.js code /** * Module dependencies. */ express = require('express') , routes = require('./routes') , user = require('./routes/user') , http = require('http') , path = require('path'); app = express(); // all environments app.set('port', process.env.PORT || 3000); app.set('views', __dirname + '/views'); app.set('view engine','jade'); app.use(express.favicon()); app.use(express.logger('dev')); app.use(express.bodyParser()); app.use(express.methodOverride()); app.use(express.cookieParser('your secret here')); app.use(express.session()); app.use(app.router); app.use(require('less-middleware')({ src: __dirname + '/public' })); app.use(express.static(path.join(__dirname, 'public'))); // development only if ('development' == app.get('env')) { app.use(express.errorHandler()); } app.use(express.static(__dirname + '/public')); app.get('/', routes.index); app.get('/users', user.list); app.get('/register', routes.register); http.createServer(app).listen(app.get('port'), function(){ console.log('Express server listening on port ' + app.get('port')); }); require('./Register.js'); register.js code app.post('/registration', function(req, res) { var Email=req.body.username console.log(username); });

  • More GCC link time issues: undefined reference to main

    - by vikramtheone
    Hi Guys, I'm writing software for a Cortex-A8 processor and I have to write some ARM assembly code to access specific registers. I'm making use of the gnu compilers and related tool chains, these tools are installed on the processor board(Freescale i.MX515) with Ubuntu. I make a connection to it from my host PC(Windows) using WinSCP and the PuTTY terminal. As usual I started with a simple C project having main.c and functions.s. I compile the main.c using GCC, assemble the functions.s using as and link the generated object files using once again GCC, but I get strange errors during this process. An important finding - Meanwhile, I found out that my assembly code may have some issues because when I individually assemble it using the command as -o functions.o functions.s and try running the generated functions.o using ./functions.o command, the bash shell is failing to recognize this file as an executable(on pressing tab functions.o is not getting selected/PuTTY is not highlighting the file). Can anyone suggest whats happening here? Are there any specific options I have to send, to GCC during the linking process? The errors I see are strange and beyond my understanding, I don't understand to what the GCC is referring. I'm pasting here the contents of main.c, functions.s, the Makefile and the list of errors. • jQuery Validation Plugin: Packer undefined error?

    - by Rosarch
    I'm using the jQuery validation plugin from bassistance.de. It works fine. From
: At first, this was the only validation code I had, and it worked: $("form").validate(); $("#form-username").rules("add", { required: true, email: true, }); It was validating this HTML:
Email:
  Great, everything works. But then I add this JS: $("#form-choose-options input[type='text']").rules("add", { number: true, }); to validate this markup:
Min credits per term:
Optimal credits per term:
Max credits per term:
Lowest acceptable GPA:
Highest realistic GPA:

  This causes a javascript error on document load: $.data(f.form, "validator") is undefined The error is from the packer function. What am I doing wrong?

  • Undefined template methods trick ?

    - by Matthieu M.
    A colleague of mine told me about a little piece of design he has used with his team that sent my mind boiling. It's a kind of traits class that they can specialize in an extremely decoupled way. I've had a hard time understanding how it could possibly work, and I am still unsure of the idea I have, so I thought I would ask for help here. We are talking g++ here, specifically the versions 3.4.2 and 4.3.2 (it seems to work with both). The idea is quite simple: 1- Define the interface // interface.h template <class T> struct Interface { void foo(); // the method is not implemented, it could not work if it was }; // // I do not think it is necessary // but they prefer free-standing methods with templates // because of the automatic argument deduction // template <class T> void foo(Interface<T>& interface) { interface.foo(); } 2- Define a class, and in the source file specialize the interface for this class (defining its methods) // special.h class Special {}; // special.cpp #include "interface.h" #include "special.h" // // Note that this specialization is not visible outside of this translation unit // template <> struct Interface<Special> { void foo() { std::cout << "Special" << std::endl; } }; 3- To use, it's simple too: // main.cpp #include "interface.h" class Special; // yes, it only costs a forward declaration // which helps much in term of dependencies int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { Interface<Special> special; foo(special); return 0; }; It's an undefined symbol if no translation unit defined a specialization of Interface for Special. Now, I would have thought this would require the export keyword, which to my knowledge has never been implemented in g++ (and only implemented once in a C++ compiler, with its authors advising anyone not to, given the time and effort it took them). I suspect it's got something to do with the linker resolving the templates methods... Do you have ever met anything like this before ? Does it conform to the standard or do you think it's a fortunate coincidence it works ? I must admit I am quite puzzled by the construct...

  • split video (avi/h264) on keyframe

    - by m.sr
    Hallo. I have a big video file. ffmpeg, tcprobe and other tool say, it is an h264-stream in an AVI-container. Now i'd like to cut out small chunks form the video. Problem: The index of the video seam corrupted/destroyed. I kind of fixed this via mplayer -forceidx -saveidx <IndexFile> <BigVideoFile>. The Problem here is, that I'm now stuck with mplayer/mencoder which can use this index file via -loadidx <IndexFile>. I have tried correcting the index like described in man aviindex (mplayer -frames 0 -saveidx mpidx broken.avi ; aviindex -i mpidx -o tcindex ; avimerge -x tcindex -i broken.avi -o fixed.avi), but this didn't fix my video - meaning that most tools i've tested couldn't search in the video file. Problem: I sut out parts of the video via following command: mencoder -loadidx in.idx -ss 8578 -endpos 20 -oac faac -ovc x264 -sws 9 -lavfopts format=mp4 -x264encopts <LotsOfOpts> -of lavf -vf scale=800:-10,harddup in.avi -o out.mp4. Now here the problem is, that some videos are corrupted at the beginning. I think this is because the fact, that i do not necessarily cut at keyframe. Questions: What is the best way to fix the index of an avi "inline" so that every tool can again work as expected with it? How can i split at the keyframes? Is there an mencoder-option for this? Are Keyframes coming in a frequency? How to find out this frequency? (So with a bit of math it should be possible to calculate the next keyframe and cut there) Is ther perhaps some completely other way to split this movie? Doing it by hand is no option, i've to cut out 1000+ chunks ... Thanks a lot!

  • Why does animate not work for the first few 'selections' of my next button?

    - by Josiah
    I'll just start right off the bat and say I'm fairly new to JQuery, so if you see some glaring issues with my code....let me know what I'm doing wrong! Either way, I've been working on a script to fade divs in and out using the z-index and animate. It "works" after about 2-3 clicks, but the first two clicks do not fade or animate as I was hoping....why is that? I'll just throw javascript up here, but if you need/want more code, just let me know. Thanks! $(document).ready(function() { //Slide rotation/movement variables var first = $('#main div.slide:first').attr('title'); var last = $('#main div.slide').length; //Needed for the next/prev buttons var next; //Set the first div to the front, and variable for first div var $active = $('#main div.slide[title='+first+']'); //Hide the links until the div is hovered over and take them away when mouse leaves $('#main').children('a').hide(); $('#main').mouseenter(function() { $('#main').children('a').fadeIn(750); }).mouseleave(function() { $('#main').children('a').fadeOut(750); }); $active.css('z-index', '4'); $('#main #next').click(function() { if ((next = parseInt($active.attr('title')) + 1) > last) { next = 1; } $active.css('z-index', '0').stop().animate({opacity: 0}, 1000); $active = $('#main div[title='+next+']').css('z-index', '4').stop().animate({opacity : 1}, 1000); }); });

  • Checkbox not checkable in dialog ui

    - by Sable Foste
    I am trying to solve a z-index problem with the jQuery UI Dialog, similar to question Can't select or deselect checkboxes inside jQuery UI Modal Dialog , knowing there is a bug report out there. So in trying to up the z-index as recommended, I added the following code: $('#interface').click(function(evform){ $('#interface').prop('z-index')=99999; }); where the chrome and firefox console.log states: Uncaught ReferenceError: Invalid left-hand side in assignment HOWEVER, despite the error, the checkbox now works (throwing the console error every time). If I remove the offending line, the checkbox becomes "unclickable". How can I properly code this? My HTML:

Loading...

(by the way, I tried adding inline style to the
, and it didn't work:
Loading...
And with AJAX, I replace the contents of '#interface' with valid checkbox html such as: and I have the usual jQuery/Dialog UI files included. One final note, I tried to get creative, since this wasn't working and manually switch the checkbox by: if ($(evform.target).prop('type')=="checkbox"){ $(evform.target).checked; } Thank you to anyone willing to help me figure this out!

  • .next is undefined, jquery plugin problem

    - by ndelangen
    I'm trying to create my own plugin. But I'm having trouble getting things right. It appears when I'm trying to traverse inside .each things go wrong. I'm trying to go to the next item every 6 seconds by fading. jQuery(function($){ $.fn.rotator = function(options){ this.each(function() { var container = $(this); var images = container.children(); //Set the opacity of all images to 0 images.css({opacity: 0.0}); //Get the first image and display it (gets set to full opacity) $('div:first',this).css({opacity: 1.0}).addClass('show'); //Call the rotator function to run the slideshow, 6000 = change to next image after 6 seconds var obj = $(this); setInterval(nextimage(obj),6000); }); }; // rotate function function nextimage(obj) { var container = $(obj); var images = container.children(); //Get the current image var current = (images.hasClass('show')? images.hasClass('show') : images.first()); //Get next image, when it reaches the end, rotate it back to the first image var next = ((current.next().length) ? ((current.next().hasClass('show')) ? images.first() :current.next()) : images.first()); //Set the fade in effect for the next image, the show class has higher z-index next.css({opacity: 0.0}) .addClass('show') .animate({opacity: 1.0}, 1000); //Hide the current image current.animate({opacity: 0.0}, 1000) .removeClass('show'); }; }); $(document).ready(function(){ $("#bg").rotator({ }) }); The error I get is: current.next is not a function Line 35 Line 35 = var next = ((current.next().length) ? ((current.next().hasClass('show')) ? images.first() :current.next()) : images.first()); Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

    Hi, I've tried to rebuild my search index but it does not seem to help. When i search for anything even command I either get an empty list or a list of short cuts with the names Programs Documents Files ... They all have the default white paper icon. If I click on them I get an error message that says Internet security settings prevented one or more files from being opened. Any ideas? thanks
