• MDX needs a function or macro syntax

  I was having an interesting discussion with a few people about the impact of named sets on performance (the same discussion noted by Chris Webb here: http://cwebbbi.wordpress.com/2011/03/16/referencing-named-sets-in-calculations). And apparently the core of the performance issue comes down to the way named sets are materialized within the SSAS engine. Which lead me to the thought that what we really need is a syntax for declaring a non-materialized set or to take this even further a way of declaring an MDX expression as function or macro so that it can be re-used in multiple places. Because sometimes you do want the set materialised, such as when you use an ordered set for calculating rankings. But a lot of the time we just want to make our MDX modular and want to avoid having to repeat the same code over and over. • Writing custom Message Formatter for SOAP basicHttpBinding

  I have a WSDL published by our service development team. It is using SOAP and basicHttpBinding. I can add the service reference to the project using Add Service Reference option in Visual Studio. I need to develop the WCF client. I need to use custom Message Formatter (for mapping between Messages and CLR types). Can you please show how to write the custom Message Formatter (in C# )for the following wsdl?   icacls in windows 7 does not give full permission to write files in root drive. We have a very old application based on Omnis7 that needs to create and read/write files on drive C: when running as a restricted user. In Windows XP to give this permission is quite trivial using cacls. cacls C:\ /G Everyone:(C) The equivalent icacls in Windows 7 will not work. icacls C:\ /Grant Everyone:(M) I have also tried the following. icacls C:\ /Grant Everyone:(F) icacls C:\ /Grant Domain\user:(F) trying to create file with a restricted user gives this C:\>copy nul text.txt Access is denied. 0 file(s) copied. After applying the icacls permissions above the result changes to this. C:\>copy nul text.txt A required privilege is not held by the client. 0 file(s) copied. Is this an issue with the way I am applying the permissions? Or is Window 7 being extremely strict?

• How to define type-specific scripts when using a 'type object' programming pattern?

  I am in the process of creating a game engine written in C++, using the C/C++ SQLite interface to achieve a 'type object' pattern. The process is largely similar to what is outlined here (Thank you Bob Nystrom for the great resource!). I have a generally defined Entity class that when a new object is created, data is taken from a SQLite database and then is pushed back into a pointer vector, which is then iterated through, calling update() for each object. All the ints, floats, strings are loaded in fine, but the script() member of Entity is proving an issue. It's not much fun having a bunch of stationary objects laying around my gameworld. The only solutions I've come up with so far are: Create a monolithic EntityScript class with member functions encompassing all game AI and then calling the corresponding script when iterating through the Entity vector. (Not ideal) Create bindings between C++ and a scripting language. This would seem to get the job done, but it feels like implementing this (given the potential memory overhead) and learning a new language is overkill for a small team (2-3 people) that know the entirety of the existing game engine. Can you suggest any possible alternatives? My ideal situation would be that to add content to the game, one would simply add a script file to the appropriate directory and append the SQLite database with all the object data. All that is required is to have a variety of integers and floats passed between both the engine and the script file.

• Rolling Back Microsoft CRM during testing

  Process related question: Currently we have a multi-tenant installation of MS CRM 4.0 on three servers, Dev, Test, and Live. We are actively working on customizing one of the tenants, but the others are static. During user testing, we often find it necessary to 'start fresh' in one of the tenants. Is it better to try and delete out the changes from the tenant (created accounts, leads, etc), or just revert the database to a backup from before the testing started? Is there compelling reasons why bulk delete is not advisable for MSCRM or that reverting the database frequently could cause issue?

• Radeon HD 5770 - DisplayPort Problem

  I am trying to set up 3 monitors with the Radeon HD 5770 I recieved a few days ago. I have read that I can use 2 DVI ports and an active DisplayPort adapter for a third DVI monitor. I have purchased this adapter: http://www.accellcables.com/products/DisplayPort/DP/dp_dvid.htm I have the two normal DVI monitors working, but when I try to extend the display to the third, I get a message saying the system has detected a problem with the connection through the display port which may limit resolution/refresh rate. I know that all the cables are fine, I have replaced the adapter, the monitors all work, I have tried different monitors through the adapter, and even nothing but the adapter, but I cannot get any monitor to work using it. I am trying to use 2 Dell monitors and an Acer. Have I overlooked something? Is there a compatibiliy issue I missed? Any suggestions as to what I could try? Thanks in advance.

• Music Manager thst can properly synch song ratings with Android

  I'm moving from Windows 7 to Ubuntu, and so far the experience has been a really good one :) However, there is something that I've used to do with Windows 7 that I can't find how to do in Ubuntu: From my Windows music manager programs (either MediaMonkey or Windows Media Player) I could set song ratings in a way that the ratings set from either program could be also read from the other one. Additionally, song ratings were visible and updated in my iPod Touch when I synch'ed my music (either manually or using iTunes). To sum up, it seems that MediaMonkey, WMP, and the iPod device use standard mp3 metadata tag for ratings. Now, using Ubuntu 12.04, and now with an Android device: Rhythmbox can't see the song rates, despite those ratings can be seen by MediaMonkey and MS Music Player when I boot with Win7. Is this an issue I can fix with some setting? Is there any program I can use to accomplish this? What do you recommend to sync my music with Android (4.0, Galaxy s2), also keeping the song ratings information updated between Android and my PC? Thanks!!

  With Scrum / user story / agile development, how does one handle scheduling out-of-sync tasks that are part of a user story? We are a small gaming company working with a few remote consultants who do graphics and audio work. Typically, graphics work should be done at least a week (sometimes 2 weeks) in advance of the code so that it's ready for integration. However, since SCRUM is supposed to focus on user stories, how should I split the stories across iteration so that they still follow the user story model? Ideally, a user story should be completed by all the team members in the same iteration, I feel that splitting them in any way violates the core principle of user story driven development. Also, one front end developer can work at 2X pace of backend developers. However, that throws the scheduling out of sync as well because he is either constantly ahead of them or what we have done is to have him work on tasks that not specific to this iteration just to keep busy. Either way, it's the same issue as above, splitting up user story tasks. If someone can recommend an active Google agile development group that discusses these and other issues, that'll be great. Also, if you know of a free alternative to Pivotal Labs, let me know as well. I'm looking now at Agilo.

  Hi, whatever I'm doing in Eclipse, I get an error. At start up I get an error at Java tooling initializing. I get an error when I want to open a type. And it's always the same error. For example, when opening a type I get: An internal error occurred during: "Cache refresh". 2048 The error at the start up also prints the error code as 2048. I'm using the most up to date version of Eclipse. Do you know a way to fix this issue?

• Computer not displaying anything

  The computer in question worked last week. It's brand new, never been connected to the internet, up-to-date parts, etc. Last week, I installed some 3D software on it, then shut it down and waited for the license files that arrived this week. I've done this to 4 other PCs with the same hardware and software. I've tried: Hooking it up to 3 different monitors using different video cables 2 other graphics cards and a handful of other things like switching which port it's plugged into before and after a restart. I have the driver disc, and a windows reinstallation disc, but they won't do me any good because no display at all for any interval of time. All the fans are moving: psu, gfx, cpu etc, so I don't believe it's a power issue. Here are the specs I know of: 4GB RAM 8800 GTX 700w PSU Intel dual core (not sure of model) Anyways, I'm open to ideas.

• Can I run into legal issues with random names?

  I'm currently building a game whose NPC's are going to be assigned a random gender and a random name for the right gender. To do this I will be using a "database" of names (actually a text file with tuples). There would also be a list of last names, which will be added to the first name also randomly. My question is the following. Suppose one such random name is "George Bush", and this person has been randomly assigned the job of president. As you can see, this could easily be seen as having been "copied" from a real-life person. The main issue is this. Names will be randomly-generated, yes, but the seed for random-number generation will be constant. In other words, the name of an NPC would be randomly-generated, i.e. I wouldn't choose it, but it would be the same for every player. Could this get me in trouble? We cannot verify all possible names, since the generated number of NPC's could be potentially limitless (new NPC's are being created whenever needed).

• My father is a doctor. He is insisting on writing a database to store non-critical patient information, with no programming background

  So, my father is currently in the process of "hacking" together a database using FileMaker Pro, a GUI based databasing tool for his small (4 doctor) practice. The database will be used to help ease the burden on reporting from medical machines, streamlining quite a clumsy process. He's got no programming background, and seems to be doing everything in his power to not learn things correctly. He's got duplicate data types, no database-enforced relationships (foreign/primary key constraints) and a dozen other issues. He's doing it all by hand via GUI tool using Youtube videos. My issue is, that whilst I want him to succeed 100%, I don't think it's appropriate for him to be handling these types of decisions. How do I convince him that without some sort of education in these topics, a hacked together solution is a bad idea? He's can be quite stubborn and I think he sees these types of jobs as "childs play" How should I approach this? Is it even that bad an idea - or am I correct in thinking he should hire a proper DBA/developer to handle this so that it doesn't become a maintenance nightmare? NB: I am a developer consultant of 4 years and I've seen my share of painful customer implementations.

• The best software for users internet usage

  Hi, We are a small business using a Vigor 2820 as the internet router, and we'd like to install a software that could report any internet usage from our users. I already tried the "official" software made by Draytek called "SmartMonitor", but is reliability is a real issue as it doesn't seem to keep capturing packets after working 3 to 6hours (randomly), whereas Wireshark keeps capturing packets after that amount of time. As I'm really fed up with this tool, I'm looking for other solutions but I still want the same features: users statistics, websites ranking, users traffic, ... I already enabled the port mirroring feature, so it would be perfect if you could suggest me a port mirroring-based software (ideally freeware). I thought I had found the good one with Etherscout, but it just doesn't launch. I am even open to a tool that would "just" make some reports based on Wireshark captured files (*.pcap).   I'm having an issue with update-manager. Last night, my computer restart suddenly during the update process. Now it won't open and it keep appearing on the notifier with a message warning that an error occurred. This seems to be a bug on update-manager itself. I've already tried to remove it and install again, but the problem persists. I also noted another bug: my source-center doesn't open too. • Requiring multithreading/concurrency for implementation of scripting language

  Here's the deal: I'm looking at designing my own scripting/interpreted language for fun. I'm only in the planning stages right now; I want to make sure I have a very strong hold on exactly how I will implement everything before I start coding. What I'm currently struggling with is concurrency. It seems to me like an easy way to avoid the unpredictable performance that comes with garbage collection would be to put the garbage collector in its own thread, and have it run concurrently with the interpreter itself. (To be clear, I don't plan to allow the scripts to be multithreaded themselves; I would simply put a garbage collector to work in a different thread than the interpreter.) This doesn't seem to be a common strategy for many popular scripting languages, probably for portability reasons; I would probably write the interpreter in the UNIX/POSIX threading framework initially and then port it to other platforms (Windows, etc.) if need be. Does anyone have any thoughts in this issue? Would whatever gains I receive by exploiting concurrency be nullified by the portability issues that will inevitably arise? (On that note, am I really correct in my assumption that I would experience great performance gains with a concurrent garbage collector?) Should I move forward with this strategy or step away from it?

• Remote desktop connection issues in windows server 2003

  Hi all, We are running windows server 2003 at our work place. I have enabled the remote desktop connections. I have also added all the users who connect to the server(three to four people) to the RDC group of users. Many of these users are also having Administrator access. The problem we are facing is that the connection is suddenly lost when we are working on something. Also, at times the system restarts by itself. Is this issue related to the limit on the number of users able to connect to the system? If so, why does the system accept new connections and/or terminate the existing connections? Has this anything to do with the users having administrator access so that all have equal prority and that is why existing connections are stalled? Also, please differentiate between console remote desktop and non console remote desktop.

• Windows 7 - sharing file - slow seek time?

  I do not want to copy the files. I simply have video files (.flv) on one computer and I would like another computer user to watch them without copying. Playback is fine, but seek time (as in if you move the cursor to skip some portion of the video) takes forever! I thought wireless speed might be the culprit, so I wired the two computer. Maybe I saw some improvement but still so bad. It's 1 Gbps! (I know real speed will vary, but before I monitor real speed and such, do I have reasonable issue? Or am I bound to have very slow seek time?) What is going on? I must mention some of these files are huge!

  We have an issue with User Profile Sync in SharePoint 2010 when the following happens: A new user is added to AD (ie DOMAIN\jdoh) The user is synched successfully to SharePoint Time passes The user's account name is changed in AD (ie because it was originally misspelled: DOMAIN\jdoe) The user is re-synced to SharePoint The behavior appears to be that the account name is not changed. In the above example, accountname will continue to be DOMAIN\jdoh in SharePoint, though other properties are synced correctly- I would assume by SID. This means that the users' my profile and mysite links still refer to the 'old' name (ie Person.aspx?accountname=Domain\jdoh). What steps should be taken to fix this in SharePoint when an account name is changed in AD?
