  I have a Linux laptop (Vostro V13) running a Celeron M chip. This is a fine laptop, but running unit tests especially for Rails applications is slow. I want a faster development environment but I don't want to spend too much money. So the choice I have is between $390 for a Linux desktop machine with a Pentium Dual Core Processor E5400 and just paying between $30 and $40 a month to Linode and trying to do development remotely on that server. Can anyone with experience developing server applications using both methods offer any advice?

• Dualbooting Win7 and Gentoo, error

  Hello I'm trying to setup a dualboot with Gentoo Linux and Windows 7. Heres my partitions: /dev/sda1 /boot partition, ext2 /dev/sda2 win7 partition, ntfs /dev/sda3 swap partition, linux swap /dev/sda4 root partition, btrfs Using Grub, I can boot into Gentoo, but when I'm choosing to boot Windows 7, nothing happens. It just writes the Grub options for that choice, and then it hangs. grub.conf: default 0 timeout 30 title Gentoo root (hd0,0) kernel /boot/kernel-x86_64-2.6.31 root=/dev/sda4 title Windows rootnoverify (hd0,1) makeactive chainloader +1 Any ideas? Help will be much appreciated!

The minute we landed, we were made to feel at home from our host Patrick Fitzgerald. The whole family who run the Guest House were also very friendly and always keen to help us. Since we had people from South Africa to show us all the amazing sights and their traditional ways to live their lives, the two weeks were very enjoyable for all of us and we came much closer together as a group. You can read this in the following parts of this report. Enjoy! The first group of Apprentices in Oracle (from left to right): Maximilian Michel (DE), Jorge Garnacho (ES), Daniel Maull (UK), Adam Griffiths (UK), Guillermo De Las Nieves (ES), Catriona McGill (UK), Ed Dunlop (UK) The Training Well, it’s time to talk about the main purpose of our trip to South Africa: the training. Two weeks, two courses. Servers and Storage. Two weeks to learn as much as possible and get the certificate. First week: Eben Pretorius with Servers Boot Camp. Learning about: • Machines: T1000, T2000, T3, T4, M series; • How to connect to the machines: serial and network connections; • Levels of software: ALOM, ILOM, OBP and of course the operating system, Solaris Combined with the practical part (screwdriver in one hand, and antistatic wristband on the other) makes quite a lot of stuff! But fortunately, Eben was able to tell us about everything without making our brains explode. For the second week: Storage Boot Camp with Deon Van Vuuren. Taking a look at the content: • Storage machines; • Connectors and protocols: SCSi, SAS, SATA Fiber Channel. Again, huge amounts of information, but Deon definitely did a great job and helped us learn it all. At the end, there was just one question left. Were we able to pass the exam and get the certificate? Well, what can we say? Just take a closer look at the picture above and make your conclusions! Our lovely Oracle office in Woodmead (near Johannesburg) We are all very proud to receive certification in “Server and Storage Support Fundamentals” together with our trainer Deon Van Vuuren.   The scenario is like this. Bob has a computer. It crashed. Now he only has the hdd. The hdd is in ext3 format. He go to his office and told the sys admin John to mount this hdd and put the mount point in his home directory. John used the following fstab entries. # Bobs harddisk /media/TAPE4/Bobs-hdd.img /home/bob/myhdd/windows ntfs ro,loop,offset=32256 0 0 /media/TAPE4/Bobs-hdd.img /home/bob/myhdd/linux ext3 ro,loop,offset=14048810496 0 0 /media/TAPE4/Bobs-hdd.img /home/bob/myhdd/extra ntfs ro,loop,offset=28015335936 0 0 Bob was happy. He could access his old extra and windows. Specially the Documents and Settings in windows was helpful for him. But he found a problem. He is a web developer and all his websites are in linux/home/bob/public_html directory. When he tried to access that public_html directory he got permission_denied. He executed ls -lh he saw this. drwxr-xr-x 2 john john 4.0K Nov 9 2011 Desktop drwxr-xr-x 3 john john 4.0K Aug 12 2011 Documents drwxr-xr-x 3 john john 4.0K Aug 21 2011 public_html He contacted John thinking he might be mistakenly did this. But John couldn't find a way why this happend? Then one thing came into his mind file system hardly store username. They store uids. So he executed ls -ln drwxr-xr-x 2 1000 1000 4096 Nov 9 2011 Desktop drwxr-xr-x 3 1000 1000 4096 Aug 12 2011 Documents drwxr-xr-x 3 1000 1000 4096 Aug 21 2011 public_html John thinks 1000 is the first uid on a linux system. As he is the admin of the current system. He created his account first. so Johns uid was 1000. Bob also setup his private system and crated his account first. So Bobs uid was 1000 too. So thats an expected behavior. But problem remains. How can Bob access those websites in public_html?

• Aircrack-ng, is it illegal?

  I just found out about this linux-based network toolset called aircrack-ng, and its pretty interesting, and I'm learning how to use it. But it just occured to me, that like a lot of linux programs, they're developed in foreign countries, with different laws. I did do a google search, and the only thing in regards to what i am asking that pops up is a question on another site. So, my question is, is it illegal in America, specifically Ohio, to use this program? I mean i know it has a legitimate purpose, but so does hemp. Also, sorry if this is the wrong place for this question, but I'm not exactly sure where it should go.

My main interest is differentiating executable and DLL on Linux and Mac OS X. For windows, the extension should be enough for my problem. • Kickstart installation: Unable to read package metadata.

  I'm trying to install a CentOS OS with kickstart using HTTP as the installation source. The kickstart server and the installed server are both running on VMs on the same machine. after the anaconda system installer starts it fails with the following message: I tried installing two different versions of Centos(5.5 and 5.2), and they both pass a CDROM media test the manual installation provides.   I'm using backTrack5R3. And I 've installed Synaptic as well as ubuntu Software center. Synaptic is very easy to use and gives wide range of details for the packages that I'm going to download. But the problem is it lack of lot of new files and information. Like vlc or adobe reader. The latest stable version of vlc is 2.0. but synaptic only installs, 1.1. And it don't find adobe. I would like to get new versions of them. What is the best way/source to update new files? EDIT: I mean after performing update & upgrade synaptic still contains vlc 1.0.6 which is outdated. I'm looking for a way to get new/best source.

• When a python process is killed on OSX, why doesn't it kill the child processes?

  I found myself getting very confused a while back by some changes that I found when moving Python scripts from Linux over to OSX... On Linux, if a python script has called os.system(), and the calling process is killed, the called process will be killed at the same time. On OSX, however, if the main process is killed, anything that it launched is left behind. Is there something somewhere in OSX/Python where I can change this behaviour? This is causing problems on our render farm, where the processes can be killed from the management GUI, but the top level process is really just a wrapper, so, while the render farm management might think that the process has gone and the machine is freed up for another task, the actual processor-intensive task is still running, which can lead to huge blockages. I know that I could write more logic to catch the kill signal and pass it on to the child processes, but I was hoping that it might be something that could be enabled at a lower level.

  I like very much global menu in previous versions of Ubuntu. But Unity is too slow for my Eee PC. So now I am looking for some alternative Desktop Environments or Distributions where there is global menu available. But at the same time there should be UbuntuOne service working too, as I use it pretty often. Could you, please, suggest what should I try out? I also use keyboard shortcuts very much and so I guess they should be configurable, and try not to use touchpad at all. So big icons like in gnome-shell and Unity are not a good option.

  I want to use symlinks extensively. However, if I move the target file, the symlink becomes broken (unlike on Windows). That's not acceptable to me, so I either need a solution or I won't be able to use symlinks the way I wish to. Is there a solution that will work with Dolphin file manager?   Getting ERROR: The wizard cannot continue because of the following error: could not load wizard specified in /wizard.inf (104) Solution: Uninstall everything related with java and jre. Then, download the lastest version of jre for linux x86 or x64, rpm.bin one. And follow these instructions http://www.java.com/en/download/help/linux_install.xml "To install the Linux RPM (self-extracting) file". Make a user and group informix (as root), then uncompress the (informix package).tar in /opt/informix that you have created. And tun ./ids_install, and GUI will work ok. Hope it helps.
