• Setting up a wireless network with Verizon MiFi

  I am trying to set up a home network. I live in a location without cable internet so I have a Verizon MiFi card. I have a few laptops at the moment and they each connect through the card but I want to set up an Ubuntu 10.10 server and see if I can use it for DHCP. I have a Trendnet TEG-S50G switch and the computer I plan to use for the server has a Linksys WMP-11 Wireless PCI card. Is there any other equipment I need in order to get this to work? Is this even doable? Is there a better way to make this happen?

• Win7-Server2008 RDP connection hangs on "Securing Remote Connection" for 20-30 seconds

  I have a problem that googling has turned up nothing, except this question on experts exchange which I borrowed most of the text from. :) When I connect via Remote Desktop to a new Windows 2008 R2 server it takes 20-30s to get past the "Securing Remote Connection" message during the login. If the password is wrong, it does this every time you attempt a login (ie its not a one time thing). However, after a successful login attempt the following logins to the same server goes faster. Most servers runs on VMware here, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

• Wifi ap finder/selector for windows 7

  Is there wifi finder program for windows 7 that can let me choose specific access points to connect to? In my school, the wifi network uses the same SSID for numerous access points and usually the default wifi finder in Windows 7 connects to the first one. Even if it connects to the closest one with the best signal, there are times when a specific access point will not work. Machine: Lenovo IdeaPad S10-2 running Windows 7 (32bit) Note: On my ThinkPad, I've got access connection that does the job but that didn't seem to work on the IdeaPad the last time I tried.

• Restart Fibre channel controller after blade bootup IBM HS bladecentre

  I have a remote system that needs to resume on startup. If the system is simply powered on then the blades boot before the SAN is online and then the only thing you can do is restart the systems. Is it possible to restart the fibre channel controller? That way I could have a system restart the controller after boot, connect to the SAN and then restart all servers requiring SAN information? Please note that I'm not a sys admin, just shooting for ideas to get a clean startup to work, apologies if my terminology is wrong.

• General purpose ticketing/tech support system [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: What’s your favorite ticketing system? I was wondering if somebody could recommend me a very user friendly or simple general purpose ticketing/tech support system. I need something that is web based, preferably open-sourced/free software implemented using PHP, Ruby, Ruby on Rails or Java (as back end) with MySQL or PostgreSQL as database engine. I need something that is not development management oriented or project management oriented like Eventum or similar (random example), something to which the user can connect open a tech support request and be able to follow it until is solved or dropped.I need it to be open-sourced to be able to modify it if there is a need or extend it. I tried a number of such systems available and I found that osTicket or eTicket is something that it's close to what I need, but the code is somewhat flaky and some of the features are working badly or behaving strangely. Any thoughts/advice where to find something similar? Thanks!

• Install Oracle Drive and TNS for Windows XP?

  I am building a box with Windows XP with some applications. One application requires connection to an Oracle database on remote. I have installed OracleXEClient.exe from Oracle download. The installation does install "Oracle Provider for OLE DB" driver. My problem is that I still cannot make connections to the remote Oracle db. The test I have done is to create a UDL file with Oracle provider OLE DB connection. The error message is: --------------------------- Microsoft Data Link Error --------------------------- Test connection failed because of an error in initializing provider. ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified I think I may miss TNSNAMEC.ora in the box. I can find this file from another box where Oracle connection works fine. I am not sure what package I should install (from Oracle) so that the default TNSNAEMES.ora will be installed with related files and setup path for accessing the TNS file?

• Ping, firewall or DNS problem on Win Server 2008 R2

  Hi there, I've installed windows server 2008 as a VM for the developers here to work on. Installed SQL Server 2008 as well as IIS7. I am not quite sure why, I can remote into that machine using the name I gave to it (winserverdev) but the guys that are supposed to use the bloody thing can't. One very interesting thing is that I can connect but I can't ping... not the name nor the IP address. Is there anything that I should be looking in order to make it work? Any ideas are welcome. • Using a secondary DNS when lookup fails in primary? [migrated]

  I use a VPN to connect my development machine to my school's CS dept. The development machine is Ubuntu as we do C programming in Unix. I used vpnc to do that. The school uses some DNS entries that only resolve on their DNS servers, i.e., internalserver.csdept.school.edu I am normally attached to the VPN whenever booted for convenience. However I noticed the other day that when I disconnect the VPN all my DNS queries fail. This obviously means that vpnc set up the school's DNS to be used. However I'd rather not use their DNS all the time (tracking and privacy and whatnot). Is there a way I can restore my ISP's DNS and then if the lookup fails, have it use my school's DNS?

• How to prepare for an interview presentation!

  During an interview process you might be asked to prepare a presentation as one of the steps in the recruitment process. Below, we want to give you some tips to help you prepare for what might be considered a daunting aspect of a recruitment process. Main purpose of the presentation Always keep in mind the main purpose of what the presentation is meant to convey. Generally speaking, an interview presentation is for the company to check if you have the ability to represent and sell the organization (and yourself), to the internal and external stakeholders in the position you are applying for. A presentation is often also part of the recruitment process to check whether you can structure and explain your experience and thoughts in a convincing manner. If you are unsure about the purpose of the presentation, feel free to ask your recruiter for more information. Preparation As with every task you do, preparation is key, so is the case with an interview presentation. It is important to know who your audience is. You have to adapt your presentation to your audience, ensuring that you are presenting the facts which they would want to hear. Furthermore, make sure you practice your presentation beforehand; this will make you more confident in your presenting skills. Also, estimate the length of your presentation as presentations or pitches during the recruitment process are often capped to a certain time limit. Structure Every presentation should have a beginning, middle and an end. Make sure you give an overview of your presentation and tell the audience what they can expect. Your presentation should have a logical order and a clear message. Always build up to your key message with strong arguments and evidence. When speaking about the topic, make sure you convey your points with conviction. Also be sure you believe the message you bring forward, if you don’t believe it yourself, then the audience definitely won’t! Delivery When you think back on successful presentations you have seen, the presenter was most likely always standing up. So if asked to do a presentation, follow this example and make sure you stand up as well. Standing up when you are doing your presentation shows confidence and control. Another important aspect in the delivery of the presentation is to relax and speak slowly and with enough volume for the audience to hear you. Speaking slowly allows the audience the time to absorb the information you are providing to them. Visual Using PowerPoint, or an equivalent, makes it very easy to have a visually attractive presentation. Make sure however that you take into account that the visual aids you use are there to support you, not for you to read word for word what is on the slides! Questions When starting your presentation, it is a good idea to tell your audience that you will deal with any questions they might have at the end of the presentation. This way it doesn’t interrupt your train of thought and the flow of your presentation. Answering questions at the end may give you additional opportunities to further expand on your facts in the topic. Some people might play the “devil’s advocate” role and confront you with opposing opinions, if this is the case, take your time to reiterate your points and remain professional in your response. A good way to deal with this is to start interacting with other members of the audience and ask for their opinions, so it will become a group discussion. This will also shows strong leadership skills, as you are open to discuss and ask for other opinions.   I set up a share like this: [global] security = user map to guest = Bad Password usershare allow guests = yes [vms] comment = VirtualBox Virtual Machines path = /home/neil/VirtualBox/HardDisks guest ok = yes read only = yes And when I access the share as myself, and type in my password, it works fine: $ smbclient //neil-ubuntu/vms -U neil Enter neil's password: Domain=[SHUTTERSTOCK] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.4.0] smb: \> But when I access it as guest, it doesn't work: $ smbclient //neil-ubuntu/vms -U guest Enter guest's password: Domain=[SHUTTERSTOCK] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.4.0] tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME Regardless of what password I type in. Does anyone know why? Also, why does smbclient print such useless error messages?

• MP3 player no longer syncing

  I recently installed third-party drivers for the (Sony) PS3 controller on my friend's PC (Windows XP). I found out a few days later that his MP3 player (also Sony) is no longer recognized by Windows. He gets the "connect device" sound, and about 250ms later, the "disconnect device" sound. I figured the controller driver took over the Walkman's device ID, so I went through the registry and C:\Windows\inf removing all references to Sony's VID (054C), but I haven't had any luck. What would you do in this situation?

  I'm trying to get my java program to talk to a MySQL DB. So i did some reading and downloaded MySQL Connector/J. I've extracted it into my home directory ~. • Setup Linksys 3200 remote access

  I'm trying to setup remote access for my linksys 3200 so that I can configure it through the WAN port. I have turned on remote access, however when I try to connect I get a 404 error. The settings I have are: When I try to access xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:9999 I just get a 404 error. I have allowed RDP access to a computer behind the router and this works fine on the same IP address. Any idea's on what else I have to do to allow remote management access? UPDATE: I tried changing the port to 80 and it works. Change it back to any other number and it doesn't work. Modem is setup with a DMZ to the router's IP. Why does it only work on port 80? BTW I can't use port 80 because there is a website hosted behind the router.

  I'm having a Cisco VPN connection to access our branch office. Since several people using the VPN I'm planing to install the VPN client on one of our server and share it through RRAS to save the licenses (like site - to - site). I install RRAS on a windows 2008 R2 (svrw2k8r2) and made the static routes on client computers. I could able to ping to the VPN's IP on svrw2k8r2 server but they can't seems to connect to the servers in other branch through this setup. Below is my setup My Branch Server: svrw2k8r2 - Windows 2008 R2 IP: 192.168.40.100/24 VPN IP: 10.0.100.12/8 Clients Win7 IP: 192.168.40.101 - 110 / 24 Other Branch Servers IP:10.10.0.10-20/24

But is there anyway I can forward the user using DNS to a proxy instead of request directly to the server? Are there any software/opensource that I can use? I notice on paid wireless, they can provide a login page if user is not login yet, i think this is a way of implementing proxy. Also the hardware is very basic with linksys and netgear router which connect directly to the internet. It's a basic LAN

• API Auth vs User Auth

  I have read many posts and articles on this topic but still cant connect the dots. I want to make a Rails app that is strictly a JSON API maybe using Sinatra or the rails-api gem. I also want to make both a web client app and an iPhone app which consumes the API. No plans on letting third party dev's use it. So I could create a separate username/password combination for both the web and mobile client and use HTTP Basic over SSL. Each app would have these values as configs in the source and use it to authenticate to the API so only these can make a call. Anyone else trying would get a 401 error returned. This would be considered handling the API authentication. The web and mobile client apps allow end users to sign up and read/write data to the API. When each user is created, I create and save a token in their profile. If a user successfully signs in, I send back the token. On each future read/write then also send along this token in the header. I get the token and lookup the user in the database and make the read/write. Does this sound like an appropriate way to handle it. For the web client, when I initially send back the token, where do I store it. In a cookie? Do I also drop a cookie to handle session state?

• OpenVPN on Ubuntu 11.10 - unable to redirect default gateway

  I'm trying to connect to connect to OpenVPN server from my Ubuntu 11.10 machine. I use the following command to do it (under root user): openvpn --config /home/vladimir/client.ovpn Everything seems to be OK, it connects normally without any warnings and errors, but when I try to browse the internet I see that I still use my own IP address, so VPN connection doesn't work. When I run openvpn command, it displays the following message among others: NOTE: unable to redirect default gateway -- Cannot read current default gateway from system I think it's the cause of this problem, but unfortunately I don't know how to fix it. • Server can't set IP after power outage

  The power went out all of a sudden and when we tried to restart everything when it came back on - our server can't be assigned an IP? We got an error stating that the IP for the server was already in use by another system. We then shut down all systems and restarted the server but then for some reason the server was assigned an IP but no one could connect to it - after restarting the server after setting it to have a dynamically assigned ip - the server now has no ip - just 0.0.0.0 - running an ipconfig/renew or ipconfig /release has no effect.. what should we do!!

• Ameristar Wins with Oracle GoldenGate’s Heterogeneous Real-Time Data Integration

  Today we announced a press release about another successful project with Oracle GoldenGate. This time at Ameristar. Ameristar is a casino gaming company and needed a single data integration solution to connect multiple heterogeneous systems to its Teradata data warehouse. The project involves integration of Ameristar’s promotional and gaming data from 14 data sources across its 7 casino hotel properties in real time into a central Teradata data warehouse. The source systems include the Aristocrat gaming and MGT promotional management platforms running on Microsoft SQL Server 2000 databases. As you can notice, there was no Oracle Database involved in this project, but Ameristar’s IT leadership knew that  GoldenGate’s strong heterogeneous and real-time data integration capabilities is the right technology for their data warehousing project. With GoldenGate Ameristar was able to reduce data latency to the enterprise data warehouse, and use this real-time customer information for marketing teams in improving overall customer experience. Ameristar customers receive more targeted and timely campaign offers, and the company has more up-to-date visibility into financial metrics of the company. One other key benefit the company experienced with GoldenGate is in operational costs. The previous data capture solution Ameristar used was trigger based and required a lot of effort to manage. They needed dedicated IT staff to maintain it. With GoldenGate, the solution runs seamlessly without needing a fully-dedicated staff, giving the IT team at Ameristar more resources for their other IT projects.
