• Starting services in batch file on windows 7

  I have a fairly simple batch file which does just one thing - "net start myservice". This batch file gets shortcut-ed in a program group by installer so that users can simply click on the icon and get things started (or stopped). All works well in XP for the users with admin rights. But things get hairy on Win7 as the batch need to be run "as administrator" explicitly and often users don't know this. So my question is how to make this friendly? Telling users to right click and run as admin on Win7 and simply click on XP is kind of weird twist. I need a smart automatic simple thingy. I could probably use "runas/user:administrator" in the batch itself, but this "administrator" account might not be available on some machines. I'm looking for a universal solution for installing things like this on any Windows box. Ideas? How would you do this?

• How can I send super large files directly to another computer in the Internet for free?

  I regulary need to transfer very large files (30 GB) to my friend - financial statistics. I don't have any problem with bandwidth: it is very broad here. I did some research in the area, so: 1. I would not use FTP, as it is very tricky to get it working behind a NAT. 2. I would not use Skype/MSN/ICQ, as it is not designed for file transfer and it underperforms on the huge files. 3. I would not use file-sharing services, as I need to pay for big files (30 GB is a problem here) and I don't like holding any piece of my data on the third-party server. So, I need some smart tool that will do what I need: sending files directly browser-to-browser and not browser-server-browser. Is it so complex? Is there some web application in the Internet that can do this?

• Computer temporarily freezes and then resumes

  This happens on ALL operating systems (7, Ubuntu, etc.). What happens is everything for 1-3 seconds becomes unresponsive, I then hear what sounds like my other internal hard drive 'spinning up', and then viola everything is responsive again. Note: Already ran SMART tests, no issues at all. I think issue is that the HDD spins down and when need it gets 'turned-on' (OS settings turn off HDD's after 20 mins of inactivity) and because my pagefile is on the other HDD it causes OS to temporarily freeze. Need more tips, and insight. Thanks More info: Running Quad CPU, 4GB RAM, Intel SSD, GT 240.

• Which linux x86 hardware keystore?

  I'm terminating SSL/TLS in my DMZ and I have to assume that machine will be hacked. At which point my certificates are compromised. Previously I've used nCipher hardware keystore/accelerator to solve this issue. These cards won't reveal the private key even to root. The card performs the encryption and decryption onboard and is hardened against physical attack. The only way to get at the keys is by attaching a smart card reader to the card itself. I'm having trouble finding information about something to recreate this approach. Is this the domain of specialist switches and firewalls these days? • Ubuntu 12.04 3.2 Kernel showing incorrect "cache size" in cpuinfo?

  2x Xeon E5620 . 16 Cores altogether. /proc/cpuinfo shows cache is only @ 4096kb According to intel this should have 12MB of "smart cache".   I just purchased a new 2TB Drive External Seagate, My main system uses both Windows and Ubuntu So I am pretty much stuck with keeping my drive as NTFS. I have done this without any problems before but since I got this new drive I have been having issues. When I first load up Ubuntu the drive mounts and runs fine, after an unspecified amount of time i start getting Input/Output errors when accessing the drive. When I goto the Disk Utility I get a message stating the drive is "Unknown or Unused", If I disconnect and reconnect the drive or reboot everything is fine again. There's no errors coming up with S.M.A.R.T and it seems to work fine while under windows. Any thoughts?

• How to prevent these executables from starting up?

  After removing the following executables from starting up, in the near future they reappear again: DDMService.exe: Re-enabled when visiting a DivX video online. DivXUpdate.exe: Re-enabled when visiting a DivX video online. GoogleUpdate.exe: Re-enabled task, I think by Google Chrome? I see no auto-update option. iPodService.exe: Re-enables after starting iTunes. iTunesHelper.exe: Re-enables after starting iTunes, useless on SSDs. Reader_sl.exe: Re-enables when updating Adobe Reader, useless on SSDs. It bores me that these processes keep popping back up, while my software functions well without them. I'm smart enough to update the software weekly through FileHippo so I don't need automatic updates. What can I do to never see these processes again? Even after reinstallation of those applications... A general solution is also welcome! :-)

  Hi, I have problem with one my conputer, it does not display any website properly. The background clouds on some websites do not show up, the layout of some websites are not properly displayed. And it only happen to only one computer. OS: Windows XP IE: 7 (not working on either IE7 or IE 8) I have tried to add my website as trusted site still that site is not working properly. I also tried Internet Options Advanced ... Check Show images, smart image dithering, enable visual styles in button and controls on webwage. Is there anything else I could do to fix the problem? • HDD not detected whenever first power on (detected at BIOS level)

  I am using Asus P8H61-M LX Motherboard with latest version of BIOS: 4401 One SATA-3 Western Digital Black Series 1.5TB is attached to SATA port 0 A Samsung 22x DVDRW SATA drive attached to SATA Port 1. ps/2 Logitech mouse and keyboard. CPU is i3 with DDR3 8Gb RAM. no other devices are installed. My problem is that when I turn on the computer, the WD HDD is not detected. ie cannot be booted. I have to press ctrl+alt+del in order to get it detected. I'd used the WD data lifeguard software to scan the HDD, the smart status is OK, the surface scan does not show any error at all. Where did I do wrong? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

These are two separate networks, the LAN is without Internet, I just use it to connect the tablet to the laptop and smart phone in my home network. The WI-FI is owned by the landlady and connects to the Internet. I know it should be possible to be connected both to the Internet through WI-FI and to my other computers and gadgets through the LAN because sometimes it works, but sometimes when I connect the ethernet cable the WI-FI disconnects and I wonder why? • Tests for hard drive health

  I have a 5-year old hard drive (bought new at the time), but it was sitting in my closet for 5 years, unused. I have just started using it, and seems to be getting a whirring sound (rather distinct from the other noises like fans etc.). I ran a few diagnostics tests, like Seagate's SeaTools, and the SMART test, and a few generic tests and all passed. Should I be concerned? Is there any other test that I should run? It's an internal IDE WD 5400RPM drive. Being used for a desktop, which is itself pretty high-end (AMD Phenom II X6 1100T, AMD Radeon GPU etc.), but would be used rather occasionally to begin with (avg. 1-2 hrs. per day). Thanks for any pointers.

  I saw a similar question for linux, but nothing for windows. I'm getting a new 1TB drive for my dev box @ work. The OS will be Windows 7 Pro with 8GB of RAM and just the single 1TB drive. Backups are not a concern, and I won't be storing large multimedia files. I want the fastest possible performance for general windows usage and for compilation. I will defrag nightly with a smart defragger liker perfectdisk. Should I just go with a single partition, or is there some way I can lay things out for the best performance?

• Laptop crashes when connecting to external harddisk

  I recently had a problem with my laptop. when I booted up the machine, I would get a SMART failure error message and when I pressed F1 to continue, it would take a very long time to boot and it would come back to the same error message again. Thinking that my hard disk was dying, I bought a new hard disk and installed on my laptop and so now my laptop is alright. However I need to recover data from that old hard disk, so I bought an external hard disk case and placed the old hard disk onto the case and connected to my laptop with USB. The first few times when I connected, I could see the files from the old hard disk and managed to copy some files over although it took extremely long to transfer. But now whenever I connect to the old hard disk, after a few minutes, my laptop will crash and re-boot. Do you think my old hard disk is dead beyond repair? Or you can offer some help here? Any assistance would be appreciated!

  When I copy text out of a PDF file and into a text editor, it ends up mangled in a variety of ways. Formatting like bold and italics are lost; soft line breaks within a paragraph of text are converted to hard line breaks; dashes to break a word over two lines are preserved even when they shouldn't be; and single and double quotes are replaced with ? signs. Ideally, I'd like to be able to copy text from a PDF and have formatting converted to HTML codes, "smart quotes" converted to " and ', and line breaks done properly. Is there any way to do this?

• Alien: .rpm -> .deb | Compability / Built per system?

  At the moment I'm playing a bit with alien (for OpenVZ packages on Debian) and was wondering myself about one question for which I was not able to find an answer anywhere. Therefor I thought it might be smart to ask here :) The question is... If I convert a .rpm to .deb on a system, how compatible is this .deb package? What do I mean? Will the .deb be working on other systems as well or is it per-system, e.g. that on every system the .deb package will be little different? That i386 and x86_64 are different is clear, so this doesn't need to be answered :) Examples that would be nice to know are for example: .deb built on Debian 6 64-bit - Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit (compatible?) .deb built on Debian 6 64-bit - Debian 5 64-bit (compatible?) etc. Thanks anyone reading this / helping me!   I have tried a few things like disabling the Intel smart response, choosing AHCI in BIOS. But there are certain problems I am still facing. I can't see my SSD during the installation of ubuntu (I am planning to install Ubuntu on my SSD and other files on HDD). When I run Ubuntu my laptop gets overheated and battery backup reduces to 90 minutes. (I guess it's related to my graphic driver ATI Raedon HD 7570). Cooling fan seems to run at its fullest, it was working much better in windows. So, overall I wanted to know what are the exact steps I need to follow to install Ubuntu on my SSD and then use my HDD to keep other files, How can I get rid of overheating and battery backup problem?

• monitor a folder and send files via ftp to clients

  I am looking for software that will monitor a specific folder and when a file is created in it send that file off via ftp to a client associated with that folder by the software. I have tried software such as smart FTP and cute FTP and they don't seem to monitor folders very consistently. Some of the options with them were to write scripts to delete duplicated files from the transfer queue. I really don't want to have to write scripts for software I purchase. I am not opposed to needing scripting or writing it but I feel I shouldn't have to write scripting to make there software properly do some thing it says it does out of the box. I am currently trying to do this on a Windows XP box though running on a Server 2003 is an option if it would make things easier. I really just want pointed in the correct direction this is all fairly foreign to me

• HP DL380 G5 Predictive failure of a new drive

  Consolidated Error Report: Controller: Smart Array P400 in slot 3 Device: Physical Drive 1I:1:1 Message: Predictive failure. We have an HP DL380 G5 server with two 72GB 15k SAS drives configured in RAID1. A couple weeks ago, the server reported a drive failure on Drive 1. We replaced the drive with a brand new HDD -- same spares number. A few days ago, the server started reporting a predictive drive failure on the new drive, in the same bay. Is it likely the new drive is bad... or more likely we have a bay failure problem? This is a production server, so any advice would be appreciated. I have another spare drive, so I can hot swap it if this is a fluke and new drive is just bad. THANKS! CharlieJ

• Browser keeps being really rude to me today

  Hi All I've had this problem only once before, years ago. I bought a new computer the other day and last night I visited a website which Google Chrome suspected was an insecure site. So I proceeded to view the page anyway (Stupid, I know... But I was curious), and all of a sudden the window closed and ever since, every few minutes either Google chrome or Internet Explorer keeps popping up with random websites, most of which are porn-related sites. I have downloaded ZoneAlarm, IOBit 360, Eset Smart Security and none of them reported any problems. I still have the rube browser problem. Can somebody please suggest any software/ways to fix this? (Other than to reformat please :)) Thank you :)

• Top causes of slow ssh logins

  I'd love for one of you smart and helpful folks to post a list of common causes of delays during an ssh login. Specifically, there are 2 spots where I see a range from instantaneous to multi-second delays. Between issuing the ssh command and getting a login prompt and between entering the passphrase and having the shell load Now, specifically I'm looking at ssh details only here. Obviously network latency, speed of the hardware and OSes involved, complex login scripts, etc can cause delays. For context I ssh to a vast multitude of linux distributions and some Solaris hosts using mostly Ubuntu, CentOS, and MacOS X as my client systems. Almost all of the time, the ssh server configuration is unchanged from the OS's default settings. What ssh server configurations should I be interested in? Are there OS/kernel parameters that can be tuned? Login shell tricks? Etc?

  I have a Windows 2008 Enterprise SP2 server in a datacenter. It is 32bit OS. I need to be able to do a "smart" url-based web site publishing. So that with a single external IP I can publish many sites on port 80, and some firewall logic resolves, based on a requested URL, which site in IIS gets the request. Forefront TMG 2010 has this feature, but it is not supported on 32bit systems. Is there a software solution that can satissfy my need on Windows 2K8 platform? Thank you. P.S. Perhaps there is a workaround or a tweak to do what I need in IIS?

• Occasional HDD Related Hangs

  I have an issue that seems to be disk related. Occasionally my system will block for 30 or so seconds and is mostly unresponsive. Those things already in memory requiring no disk access continue to function but those things requiring disk access (even small) hang. 30 seconds later everything is back to normal. I have 2 Samsung drives in RAID 0. I have 1 WD drive (has pagefile) I have an SSD used for caching (Intel Smart Response). This is a new install of Windows and the drives were fine in my old PC (~1 month ago). Has anyone experienced anything similar? Any suggestions to solve this one? Thanks in advance.

• Windows backups to VM Esxi

  I'm very new to ESXi, so apologies if this is a silly question. I have ESXi 5.1 running running on HP Proliant Microserver with internal LUNs RAIDed with HP P410 Smart Array card. I have 2 Windows Server 2012 VMs running as Domain controllers. These are being backed-up up with GhettoVCB to a dedicated datastore hosted on LUNs on a eSata external device. I have several Windows 8 & 7 PC's connected to this domain. I want to back up these Windows PCs, via the built in backup software, ideally to the external eSata device as well. What do I need to do to have the Windows PC's see the datastore? I assume I could create a VM for FreeNas or something, or share out the datastore via one of the Windows Server 2012 VMs. Both those options seem a little bit of an over kill?

• Formula in table header cells

  I have a table in Excel 2007 that I want to summarise, in a similar fashion to a Pivot Table, but for various reasons I can't use a pivot table. I like the "Format as table" features of sort and filter buttons, automatic formatting etc, so have used that to create a simple table: A B C N +-----------+------------+------------+-------+------------+ 1 | | 01/01/2010 | 01/02/2010 | ... | 01/12/2010 | +-----------+------------+------------+-------+------------+ 2 | CategoryA | 15 | 545 | | 634 | 3 | CategoryB | 32 | 332 | | 231 | 4 | CategoryC | 5 | 234 | | 644 | | ... | | | | | 27 | CategoryZ | 2 | 123 | | 64 | +-----------+------------+------------+-------+------------+ The numbers are retrieved from a "back-end" pivot table using GETPIVOTDATA(). All that works fine. Now, the problem is that I can't seem to use formulas for my column headings in these new "smart" tables - they are converted to text or just broken. For example if in B1 I put NOW(), I don't get the date, I get 00/01/1900. Is there any way of getting a formula to work in the auto tables? Or do I have to use standard tables and manually alternate-colour my rows etc?
