We have identified one problem, and that is reading/writing performance. We have an application that compiles files and writes to disk. This is considerably slower on the new virtual machines compared to the physical machines. Is there a performance bottleneck when writing to a virtual hard drive compared to a physical hard drive?

• Keeping new Ubuntu installation's /var on separate drive without formatting

  I have a server running an older version of Ubuntu and with /var stored on a separate partition on a separate hard drive. I am attempting to update Ubuntu to 10.04, but I still want to store /var on a separate partition and hard drive. However, I don't want to format the drive which currently contains /var, as it has important data. Is there some way to have 10.04 set up the new /var on this separate drive at installation, without formatting the drive and losing the old /var?

• Macbook Pro keeps ejecting anything I put into the internal optical drive

  My hard disk crashed and I need to reinstall Mac OS X. I restart, insert the installation DVD, press c on the keyboard and the dvd ejects. I've tried different DVDs, even CDs. It's a Macbook Pro from march 2008. Is it broken? Or can it be something more severe like the firewire controller on the motherboard (since I noticed this after my hard drive started to act strangely)? I've ran Apple Hardware Test successfully.

I downloaded and install Smartware software in both my desktop (windows xp) and laptop (Windows 7) but in both case the s/w is not able to detect the external hard disc.   I have a HP Pavilion dv6446 notebook. It had Windows Vista Home premium. After 4.5+ years of usage, just recently it started malfunctioning. While working fine, its screen goes white or sometimes some thin black lines horizontally. Laptop freezes. Hard reboot works. Again it works for some 2 hrs or so, same error. To diagnose I did run the Memory and Hard disk check which is present in the Bios Setup. Memory test passed. Hard disk test returned an error saying something like - "Replace the hard disk". Bad.. Some sectors or platters have gone bad on the disk. (I confirmed this later by further tests mentioned below) Then I tried installing a Ubuntu 11.10. It listed 3 partitions /dev/sda1, sda2, sda2. It again gave error and could not install grub loader on /dev/sda1. Bad sectors. Then redid the Ubuntu installation, this time asked to to install the Ubuntu on /dev/sda3. and kept /dev/sda1 for /home. Installed fine, and works fine as well. Due to unavailability of WiFi/ Ethernet driver for that adapters under Ubuntu( at least I could not configure them and get the networking working at all), I decided to go back to reinstall windows Vista. It did install fine. I did not have to format one data partition which has my data. I just formatted one partition which installed Windows So in effect HDD has not undergone a full format here. Worked ok for 1 day. But same white screen and freeze happened. Looks like while it is in use, it accesses the bad sectors for storing some data and that's when it bombs. I am inclined to think HDD has not failed fully or crashed but has developed bad sectors. Else if it was a HDD crash, it would have refused to boot at all let alone install on it. Questions: Is there any HDD test check under windows or any such tools windows/linux based ewhere which can identify the bad sectors of the HDD and 'lock/isolate' them from further read-write access of any kind. If not what are my options, if any to salvage this laptop HDD without replacing it. EDIT: Would the Disk Error checking tool under windows help in any way?

  I recently had one of my home PC hard drives fail. It was in a striped raid, so I had to rebuild the raid (no data lost, only the OS partition was there). Is there any way to diagnose exactly what went wrong with the drive? That is what caused the failure? Also, in general, what is a good way to dispose of a failed hard drive securely and realistically (I don't have thermite or muriatic acid)?

  I've got an Airport Extreme and an external USB Hard Drive formatted with NTFS. (And a LAN of Windows XP Machines.) The drive works perfectly when connected directly to a PC. When it's connected to the AE, however, the Airport Utility sees the drive and lists it in the Disks list, but the drive doesn't appear on the network (as near as I can tell.) Can the AE handle NTFS formatted disks? The documentation is vague on that point.

  I cloned my windows 7 installation on c: to external hard drive. I applied usb patch using pwboot and i could successfully boot into windows. But My problem is even though i am booting in to external hd the file reference and system path is pointing to c: on my internal hard disk. If i remove internal hd and boot it will get stuck at login screen. Is there any way i can force drive letter c: to my boot partition on external hd while booting from it.

What other diagnostic tools could I use to more accurately detect hard drive failures? Could these Windows events be false positives? I have already evaluated S.M.A.R.T., and it seems to have significant sensitivity and specificity issues.

• Using virt-install to mount multiple cdrom drives/images

  I would like to create a windows xp guest from the windows xp upgrade cd I have, along with one of a few full versions I have around. However, when I reach the stage in the installer where I am prompted to insert a full version cd, the installer can't find it, i.e.: Setup could not read the CD you inserted, or the CD is not a valid Windows CD.. Is there a work-around for this?, my Googling didn't uncover anything. I've tried various combinations of mounting .iso files and specifying disks, such as: $sudo virt-install --accelerate --connect qemu:///system -n xpsp1 -r 2048 --disk ./vm/winxp_sp1.iso,device=cdrom --disk ./vm/windows.qcow2,size=12 --vnc --noautoconsole --os-type windows --os-variant winxp --vcpus 2 -c /dev/cdrom --check-cpu If I try to specify multiple cdrom drives, I receive an error: virt-install --accelerate --connect qemu:///system -n xpsp1 -r 2048 --disk ./vm/winxp_sp1.iso,device=cdrom --disk /dev/cdrom,device=cdrom --disk ./vm/windows.qcow2,size=12 --vnc --noautoconsole --os-type windows --os-variant winxp --vcpus 2 --check-cpu Starting install... • Copying files from NAS to NAS drives

  Very simple question. I've got 2 NAS drive that are "wire" connected via a router. If I have a wireless laptop and request a large amount of data be copied from one NAS drive to the other, does the network traffic go direct from the one drive to the other, going via the wired network, or does the network traffic go via my laptop, if you see what I mean. IE. From the NAS drives wired network, to the wireless network and then back to the wired network. Is this a common bottle-neck when copying a large amount of data? And if so, is there a way to avoid it. Thanks.
