• Best approach to show big amount of "grid" data

  Hello all. I am building an application for Android (1.5) that, after quering a webservice, shows to the user a big amount of data that should be displayed in a "grid" or "table" style. I must show a result of about 7 columns and 50 rows (for example a customer list with names, adresses, telephone number, sales amount last year and so). Obviously, the 7 columns will not fix in the screen and I would like the user would be able to scroll up/down and LEFT/RIGHT (important because of the number of columns) to explore the grid results. cell selection level is NOT necessary, as much I would need row selection level. What is the best approach to get this interface element? Listview / GridView / TableLayout? Thanks

• Strange centering problem in Firefox and IE8

  The navigation bar on my site http://hungryathome.net doesn't center properly on Firefox and IE8 Standards mode. It centers properly in IE7 Compatability mode and in Chrome. What's odd is that setting a Margin on the div (id="navlinks") to 4px or more will make it center properly. Any less will result in it being slightly off-center. I changed the values back and forth in Firebug and it's confusing the heck out of me. Any explanation for why that's happening?

• Python - question regarding the concurrent use of `multiprocess`.

  I want to use Python's multiprocessing to do concurrent processing without using locks (locks to me are the opposite of multiprocessing) because I want to build up multiple reports from different resources at the exact same time during a web request (normally takes about 3 seconds but with multiprocessing I can do it in .5 seconds). My problem is that, if I expose such a feature to the web and get 10 users pulling the same report at the same time, I suddenly have 60 interpreters open at the same time (which would crash the system). Is this just the common sense result of using multiprocessing, or is there a trick to get around this potential nightmare? Thanks

  In Delphi you can pass class references around to compare the types of objects, and to instantiate them. Can you do the same with interface references being passed to a COM automation server? For example, you can define a method taking a GUID parameter using the type library editor: function ChildNodesOfType(NodeType: TGUID): IMBNode; safecall; In this function I would like to return automation types that support the interface specified by NodeType, e.g. if Supports(SomeNode, NodeType) then result := SomeNode; But the Supports call always fails, I tried passing in the Guids defined in the type library but none of the different types (Ixxx, Class_xxxx, IId_Ixxxx) seem to work.

  Hi guys, I would like to know if it is possible to re-size and re-position a greybox or shadowbox window to display in a certain div element? I am creating a template for a wordpress site, and I am using the default calendar, but when you click on a date inside of the calendar, the default action is to open it up in a new window. Would it be possible to mod greybox or shadowbox in such a way that when you click on a date, the box opens up over the calendar displaying the contents in it, instead of a new page? Or is there another way of achieving the desired result, maybe with jQuery or Javascript? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanx in advance!

  I have a UIWebView in a viewcontroller, which has two methods as below. The question is if I pop out(tap back on navigation bar) this controller before the second thread is done, the app will crash after [super dealloc], because "Tried to obtain the web lock from a thread other than the main thread or the web thread. This may be a result of calling to UIKit from a secondary thread.".   I have three data models, Users, Conversations and Lines, where each conversation has many lines and certain participating users, each line has one conversation and one user and each user has many conversations and many lines. I have arranged these in ActiveRecord like this: class Line < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :conversation belongs_to :user end class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_and_belongs_to_many :conversations has_many :lines end class Conversation < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :lines has_and_belongs_to_many :users end If I want to create a new conversation with 4 users, where the users are either found or created inside the users table, how would I go about doing this? I thought I could do: c = Conversation.new c.users.find_or_create_by_username('myUsername') c.save But this will create a new username in the Users table even if that username already exists! (ie. running the above code 3 times will result in Users having 3 rows with 'myUsername' as the username, one for each conversation, rather than three conversations all with the same 'myUsername' entry listed in their associated users) I'm not sure how to search for this kind of information with google - can anyone help?

• ASP.NET - Themes and Relative Referencing

  Hello, I have an ASP.NET application that uses themes. Let's pretend I have a theme named "MySkin". I have a page that is in a sub-directory of my application. When I reference a page that uses "MySkin", I noticed that ASP.NET renders a link element that walks up to the root of the site and then down into the App_Themes directory. Here is an example link element I found in a rendered ASP.NET page: <link href="../../App_Themes/MySkin/theme.css" type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" /> Is there a reason that the rendered link element does not use the following instead: <link href="/App_Themes/MySkin/theme.css" type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" /> Is this a browser compatibility issue or is there another reason? The reason I am asking is because I am rendering my ASP.NET page using Server.Execute and storing the result in a different directory. Because of this, I would prefer to use the second way to reference my theme's css. Thank you!

• Linux standard input issue

  Hello everyone, I am new to Linux. And I am using Red Hat Enterprise Version 5. There is a ruby program which use standard input as its input (e.g. the Ruby program process input from standard input). I think standard input should be keyboard, correct? So, I think other kinds of input (non-standard input) should not work (i.e. the ruby program should not be able to read input from such non-standard input), but actually I have tried using pipe works, I am so confused because I think pipe should be some other kinds of input -- other than standard input, why it could work? i.e. put text "123" in abc.txt with pipe, could achieve the same result as using keyboard as input to type "123" for the ruby program. Here is the sample which works and makes me confused, cat abc.txt | ~/test/rubysrc/foo.rb thanks in advance, George

• stored procedure to find value in 2 columns out of 3

  I am putting in the samle date and i am supposed to do something similar what i am asking. I want to run a query that would pull values in any two columns out 3 if it has a 1 or if any one column has a 1 it will return just those results. However it should search all three columns and in any of the three columns where it found value as 1 it should return that result. Can anyone please help me with this. Thanks in advance. • Applying a function to an arbitrarily long list of arguments

  I want to create a function apply that takes a function with an arbitrary amount of arguments as well as a list of integers, and returns the result of the function (Where each integer in the list is an argument in order. I was thinking something like: apply :: ([Int] -> Int) -> [Int] -> Int apply f x:xs = apply (f x) xs apply f [] = f But I know this won't work because the type signature is wrong - the function doesn't take a list of ints, it just takes some amount of int arguments. Additionally, when I get to the base case the f argument to apply should actually be an integer, violating the type signature anyway. Does anyone know how to deal with this sort of problem?

• Is C# 4.0 Tuple covariant

  (I would check this out for myself, but I don't have VS2010 (yet)) Say I have 2 base interfaces: IBaseModelInterface IBaseViewInterface And 2 interfaces realizing those: ISubModelInterface : IBaseModelInterface ISubViewInterface : IBaseViewInterface If I define a Tuple<IBaseModelInterface, IBaseViewInterface> I would like to set that based on the result of a factory that returns Tuple<ISubModelInterface, ISubViewInterface>. In C# 3 I can't do this even though the sub interfaces realize the base interfaces. And I'm pretty sure C# 4 lets me do this if I was using IEnumerable<IBaseModelInterface> because it's now defined with the in keyword to allow covariance. So does Tuple allow me to do this? From what (little) I understand, covariance is only allowed on interfaces, so does that mean there needs to be an ITuple<T1, T2> interface? Does this exist?

  Hello, I want to be able to store -11.99 and +11.99 kind of values in mysql db I am thinking of decimals instead of varchar. But reading mysql site I found out that its incompatible with older versions of mysql As a result of the change from string to numeric format for DECIMAL storage, DECIMAL columns no longer store a leading + or - character or leading 0 digits. Before MySQL 5.0.3, if you inserted +0003.1 into a DECIMAL(5,1) column, it was stored as +0003.1. As of MySQL 5.0.3, it is stored as 3.1. For negative numbers, a literal - character is no longer stored. Applications that rely on the older behavior must be modified to account for this change. So what should be the data type, If I have to give up varchar and make it compatible with older versions too?

• Graceful DOS Command Error-Handling w/PHP popen()

  PHP 5.2.13 on Windows 2003 I am using the DOS Start /B command to launch a background application using the PHP popen() function: popen("start /B {$_SERVER['HOMEPATH']}/{$app}.exe > {$_SERVER['HOMEPATH']}/bg_output.log 2>&1 & echo $!", 'r'); The popen() function launches a cmd.exe process that runs the specified command; however, if the command fails (e.g. the {$app}.exe doesn't exist or is locked in the above example), the cmd.exe process never returns, and PHP hangs indefinitely as a result. Calling the failing DOS command directly using the Command Prompt results in an Error prompt that requires clicking the OK button. I assume this error confirmation requirement is what's preventing the cmd.exe process from returning to PHP both from the Command Prompt (using both CGI and CLI) and the web (using Apache 2.0 handler w/Apache 2.2). Is there a way to configure PHP, Apache, and/or Win 2003 to return the DOS error to the originating call rather than waiting for confirmation?

• Return database messages on successful SQL execution when using ADO

  I'm working on a legacy VB6 app here at work, and it has been a long time since I've looked at VB6 or ADO. One thing the app does is to executes SQL Tasks and then to output the success/failure into an XML file. If there is an error it inserts the text the task node. What I have been asked to do is try and do the same with the other mundane messages that result from succesfully executed tasks, like (323 row(s) affected). There is no command object being used, it's just an ADODB.Connection object. This is just a pseudocode kind of example: f (x,y) { y = y+1; x = x+y; } main() { a = 2; b = 2; f(a+b, a) print a; } When accessing variable x in f, does it access the address of the temp variable which contains the result of a+b or will it access the individual addresses of a and b and then evaluate the value of a+b Please help. • Java Spring 3.0 MVC Annotation vs COC. Whats the preferred method in the Java community?

  I am using Spring's MVC framework for an application I'm hosting on Google's App Engine. So far, my controllers are registered via the @Controller annotation; however, prior to getting into Spring, I evaluated ASP.net MVC 2 which requires no configuration and is based on convention. Is convention over configuration (COC) the current and preferred method in the Java community to implement MVC with Spring. Also, this may be a result of my limited knowledge so far but i noticed that i could only instantiate my Controllers the required constuctor injection if i use the COC method via the ControllerClassNameHandlerMapping. For instance the following controller bean config will fail if i use the defaultannotationhandlermapping. <bean id="c" class="com.domain.TestController"> <constructor-arg ref="service" /> </bean> <bean id="service" class="com.domain.Service" /> My com.domain.TestController controller works fine if i use ControllerClassNameHandlerMapping/COC but it results in an error when i use defaultannotationhandlermapping/Annotations.

• Deleting orphans with JPA

  I have a one-to-one relation where I use CascadeType.PERSIST. This has over time build up a huge amount of child records that has not been deleted, to such an extend that it is reflected in the performance. Now I wish to add some code that cleans up the database removing all the child records that are not referenced by a parent. At the moment we are talking 400K+ records, at I need to run the code on all customer installations just to be sure they do not run into the same problem. I think the best solution would be to run a named query (because we support two databases) that deletes the necessary records, and this is where I get into problems, because how should I write it in JPQL? The result I want can be defined like the following sql statement, which unfortunaltely does not run on MySQL. DELETE FROM child c1 WHERE c1.pk NOT IN (SELECT DISTINCT p.pk FROM child c2 JOIN parent p ON p.child = c2.pk);

• using crypto++ on iphone sdk with pycrypto on app engine

  Hi, I'm trying to encrypt http requests using crypto++ and decrypt them with pycrypto on the app engine server end. Using Arc4 encryption, I can successfully encrypt and decrypt on the iphone end but when I try decrypting on app engine, the result is garbled. I thought maybe it has something to do with the encoding of the NSString but am not certain. It's not clear to me if I need to call encode() on the cipher on the server end before decrypting, although that does seem to resolve a failure to decrypt involving ascii values.   As a software developer one sometimes gets feature requests that seem to be in some kind of morally grey area. Sometimes one can deflect them, or implement them in a way that feels less 'evil' - sometimes - on reflection - while the feature request 'feels' wrong theres no identifiable part of it that actually causes harm. Sometimes one feels a feature is totally innocent but various anti virus products start tagging one as malware. For example - I personally consider EULAs to (a) hopefully be unenforceable and (b) a means by which rights are REMOVED from consumers. However Anti Virus scanners frequently mark as malware any kind of download agent that does not display a EULA. Which to me is the result of a curious kind of double think. What I want to know is - are there any online (or offline) resources that cover evil software development practices? How can I know if a software practice that I consider dodgy is in fact evil enough to consider fighting?
