  • How can I move the close button to the top-right corner of the box in slimbox (jQuery)

    - by janoChen
    I want to have my button in the top-right corner, I tried position: absolute, but I think the position of the box is not relative so I can't use top: 0;. Any suggestions? CSS: /* SLIMBOX */ #lbOverlay { position: fixed; z-index: 9999; left: 0; top: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; background-color: #000; cursor: pointer; } #lbCenter, #lbBottomContainer { position: absolute; z-index: 9999; overflow: hidden; background-color: #fff; } .lbLoading { background: #fff url(slimbox2/loading.gif) no-repeat center; } #lbImage { position: absolute; left: 0; top: 0; border: 10px solid #fff; background-repeat: no-repeat; } #lbPrevLink, #lbNextLink { display: block; position: absolute; top: 0; width: 50%; outline: none; } #lbPrevLink { left: 0; } #lbPrevLink:hover { background: transparent url(slimbox2/prevlabel.gif) no-repeat 0 15%; } #lbNextLink { right: 0; } #lbNextLink:hover { background: transparent url(slimbox2/nextlabel.gif) no-repeat 100% 15%; } #lbBottom { font-family: Verdana, Arial, Geneva, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px; color: #666; line-height: 1.4em; text-align: left; border: 10px solid #fff; border-top-style: none; } #lbCloseLink { display: block; float: right; width: 31px; height: 32px; background: transparent url(slimbox2/closelabel.gif) no-repeat center; margin: 5px 0; outline: none; } #lbCloseLink:hover { background: transparent url(slimbox2/closelabel_hover.gif) no-repeat center; border-bottom: 0px; } #lbCaption, #lbNumber { margin-right: 71px; } #lbCaption { font-weight: bold; }

  • Avoid being blocked by web mail companies for mass/bulk emailing ?

    - by Johannes
    Our company is sending out a lot of emails per day and planning to send even more in future. (thousands) Also there are mass mailouts as well in the ten thousands every now and then. Anybody has experience with hotmail, yahoo (web.de, gmx.net) and similar webmail companies blocking your emails because "too many from the same source in a period of time" have been sent to them? What can be done about it? Spreading email mailouts over a whole day/night? At what rate? (we are talking about legal emailing just to make sure...)

  • Find top N elements in a Multiset from Google Collections?

    - by dfrankow
    A Google Collections Multiset is a set of elements each of which has a count (i.e. may be present multiple times). I can't tell you how many times I want to do the following Make a histogram (exactly Multiset) Get the top N values from the histogram Examples: top 10 URLs, top 10 tags, ... What is the canonical way to do #2 given a Multiset? Here is a blog post about it, but that code is not quite what I want. First, it returns everything, not just top N. Second, it copies (is it possible to avoid a copy?). Third, I usually want a deterministic sort, i.e. tiebreak if counts are equal.

  • The best way to deploy one site for two companies in ColdFusion?

    - by Ofeargall
    My client has multiple companies; different names/logos etc, but all the content on the sites are identical with the exception of said names/logos. In a ColdFusion environment, what would be the best way for me to serve up identical content and swap out the logos/company names on the fly so I can keep everything in one spot? Is this a jQuery solution? regex? Or will ColdFusion enable me to deploy this in an efficient manner based on the url and session variables?

  • CSS to position text based on Top of text?

    - by viatropos
    When I change the size of a font in CSS, how do I make it so no matter what size the font is (from 12px to 200px), that the "Cap Height" (pic) of the text will always 'visually' have 10px padding on top? Otherwise what I'm doing is every time I change the font size, I have to go back and reposition the top/margin-top etc.

  • Are table headers only for the top row in html?

    - by Bill Zimmerman
    Hi, I always see the th tag only used in the first row of the table. Is there some specific reason why it can't be used to create 'left' headers along the leftmost column. Is this bad form, or is this ok. Basically, a table with headings on the top row and the leftmost column, with the very top left square being empty. e.g. <table> <tr> <th/> <!--empty--> <th>Top 1</th> <th>Top 2</th></tr> <tr> <th>LeftHeader?</th> <td>data1</td> <td>data2</td></tr> </table>

  • php - what kind of download counter big websites companies have?

    - by dinbrca
    Hi, I am developing in php and trying to implement a download counter to count the times that users downloaded my application.. I also read the following topics: Best way to implement a download counter? Best way to count file downloads on a website and found nothing useful enough.. What I would like to ask is: what kind of download counter the big companies implement? is it when the user cancels the download doesn't count? Is it even possible - to count file downloads, and remove 1 from the count if the user canceled the download? I already have a script that works great - but only when the file is 1MB or upper, when its less than a 1MB and a user cancels the download - the download still counts.. Thanks in advanced, Din.

  • Creating a new window that stays on top even when in full screen mode (Qt on Linux)

    - by Lorenz03Tx
    I'm using Qt 4.6.3, and ubuntu linux on an embedded target. I call dlg->setWindowState(Qt::WindowFullScreen); on my windows in my application (so I don't loose any real-estate on the touch screen to task bar and status panel on the top and bottom of the screen. This all works fine and as expected. The issue comes in when I want to popup the on screen keyboard to allow the user to input some data. I use m_keyProc= new QProcess(); m_keyProc->start("onboard -s 640x120"); This pops up the keyboard but it is behind the full screen window. The onbaord keyboards preferences are set such that it is always on top, but that seems to actually mean "except for full screen windows". I guess that makes sense and probably meets most use cases, but I need it to be really on top. Can I either A) Not be full screen mode (so the keyboard works) and programmatically hide the task bars? or B) Force the keyboard to be on top despite my full screen status? Note: On windows we call m_keyProc->start("C:\\Windows\\system32\\osk.exe"); and the osk keyboard is on top despite the full screen status. So, I'm guessing this is a difference in window mangers on the different operating systems. So do I need to set some flag on the window with the linux window manager?

  • Drawing straight lines in JavaScript

    - by Shawn31313
    I'm just trying to draw a line with JavaScript. I would like it to be like this: http://deepliquid.com/projects/blog/arrows2.html My version: http://jsfiddle.net/shawn31313/qsWML/5/show Doesn't work too well and I don't know how to get it too work. It must be an issue in my JavaScript. This my code: $(document).ready(function() { var dragStatus = 2, getPos, giveRandomID; $(document).mousedown(function(event) { dragStatus = 0; getPos = { top: event.clientY, left: event.clientX }; giveRandomID = Math.floor(Math.random() * 99999); }); $(document).mousemove(function() { var line = $('#line' + giveRandomID); if (dragStatus == 0) { $('body').append("<div id='line" + giveRandomID + "' style='position:absolute;top:" + getPos.top + "px;left:" + getPos.left + "px;background:black;width:2px;height:5px'></div>"); dragStatus = 1; } if (dragStatus == 1) { if (event.clientX > getPos.left) { line.css({ left: getPos.left, width: event.clientX - getPos.left }); } else { line.css({ left: event.clientX, width: getPos.left - event.clientX }); } if (event.clientY > getPos.top) { line.css({ top: getPos.top - Math.abs((event.clientY - getPos.top) * 2), '-webkit-transform': 'rotate(' + (event.clientY - getPos.top) + 'deg)' }); } else { line.css({ top: getPos.top + Math.abs((getPos.top - event.clientY) * 2), '-webkit-transform': 'rotate(' + (getPos.top - event.clientY) + 'deg)' }); } //for DEG "-" Top-Math.abs(DEG*2) for Deg "+" Top+(DEG*2) } }); $(document).mouseup(function() { dragStatus = 2; }); });? Thanks for any help fixing this. Mainly an issue with the math, just don't know how I can fix this.

  • Python finding index in a array

    - by NIH
    I am trying to see if a company from a list of companies is in a line in a file. If it is I utilize the index of that company to increment a variable in another array. The following is my python code. I keep getting the following error: AttributeError: 'set' object has no attribute 'index'. I cannot figure out what is going wrong and think the error is the line that is surrounded by **. companies={'white house black market', 'macy','nordstrom','filene','walmart'} positives=[0 for x in xrange(len(companies))] negatives=[0 for x in xrange(len(companies))] for line in f: for company in companies: if company in line.lower(): words=tokenize.word_tokenize(line) bag=bag_of_words(words) classif=classifier.classify(bag) if classif=='pos': **indice =companies.index(company)** positives[indice]+=1 elif classif=='neg': **indice =companies.index(company)** negatives[indice]+=1

  • SOA Implementation Challenges

    Why do companies think that if they put up a web service that they are doing Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA)? Unfortunately, the IT and business world love to run on the latest hype or buzz words of which very few even understand the meaning. One of the largest issues companies have today as they consider going down the path of SOA, is the lack of knowledge regarding the architectural style and the over usage of the term SOA. So how do we solve this issue?I am sure most of you are thinking by now that you know what SOA is because you developed a few web services.  Isn’t that SOA, right? No, that is not SOA, but instead Just Another Web Service (JAWS). For us to better understand what SOA is let’s look at a few definitions.Douglas K. Bary defines service-oriented architecture as a collection of services. These services are enabled to communicate with each other in order to pass data or coordinating some activity with other services.If you look at this definition closely you will notice that Bary states that services communicate with each other. Let us compare this statement with my first statement regarding companies that claim to be doing SOA when they have just a collection of web services. In order for these web services to for an SOA application they need to be interdependent on one another forming some sort of architectural hierarchy. Just because a company has a few web services does not mean that they are all interconnected.SearchSOA from TechTarget.com states that SOA defines how two computing entities work collectively to enable one entity to perform a unit of work on behalf of another. Once again, just because a company has a few web services does not guarantee that they are even working together let alone if they are performing work for each other.SearchSOA also points out service interactions should be self-contained and loosely-coupled so that all interactions operate independent of each other.Of all the definitions regarding SOA Thomas Erl’s seems to shed the most light on this concept. He states that “SOA establishes an architectural model that aims to enhance the efficiency, agility, and productivity of an enterprise by positioning services as the primary means through which solution logic is represented in support of the realization of the strategic goals associated with service-oriented computing.” (Erl, 2011) Once again this definition proves that a collection of web services does not mean that a company is doing SOA. However, it does mean that a company has a collection of web services, and that is it.In order for a company to start to go down the path of SOA, they must take  a hard look at their existing business process while abstracting away any technology so that they can define what is they really want to accomplish. Once a company has done this, they can begin to factor out common sub business process like credit card process, user authentication or system notifications in to small components that can be built independent of each other and then reassembled to form new and dynamic services that are loosely coupled and agile in that they can change as a business grows.Another key pitfall of companies doing SOA is the fact that they let vendors drive their architecture. Why do companies do this? Vendors’ do not hold your company’s success as their top priority; in fact they hold their own success as their top priority by selling you as much stuff as you are willing to buy. In my experience companies tend to strive for the maximum amount of benefits with a minimal amount of cost. Does anyone else see any conflicts between this and the driving force behind vendors.Mike Kavis recommends in an article written in CIO.com that companies need to figure out what they need before they talk to a vendor or at least have some idea of what they need. It is important to thoroughly evaluate each vendor and watch them perform a live demo of their system so that you as the company fully understand what kind of product or service the vendor is actually offering. In addition, do research on each vendor that you are considering, check out blog posts, online reviews, and any information you can find on the vendor through various search engines.Finally he recommends companies to verify any recommendations supplied by a vendor. From personal experience this is very important. I can remember when the company I worked for purchased a $200,000 add-on to their phone system that never actually worked as it was intended. In fact, just after my departure from the company started the process of attempting to get their money back from the vendor. This potentially could have been avoided if the company had done the research before selecting this vendor to ensure that their product and vendor would live up to their claims. I know that some SOA vendor offer free training regarding SOA because they know that there are a lot of misconceptions about the topic. Superficially this is a great thing for companies to take part in especially if the company is starting to implement SOA architecture and are still unsure about some topics or are looking for some guidance regarding the topic. However beware that some companies will focus on their product line only regarding the training. As an example, InfoWorld.com claims that companies providing deep seminars disguised as training, focusing more about ESBs and SOA governance technology, and less on how to approach and solve the architectural issues of the attendees.In short, it is important to remember that we as software professionals are responsible for guiding a business’s technology sections should be well informed and fully understand any new concepts that may be considered for implementation. As I have demonstrated already a company that has a few web services does not mean that they are doing SOA.  Additionally, we must not let the new buzz word of the day drive our technology, but instead our technology decisions should be driven from research and proven experience. Finally, it is important to rely on vendors when necessary, however, always take what they say with a grain of salt while cross checking any claims that they may make because we have to live with the aftermath of a system after the vendors are gone.   References: Barry, D. • Pie Charts Just Don't Work When Comparing Data - Number 10 of Top 10 Reasons to Never Ever Use a Pie

    - by Tony Wolfram
    When comparing data, which is what a pie chart is for, people have a hard time judging the angles and areas of the multiple pie slices in order to calculate how much bigger one slice is than the others. Pie Charts Don't Work A slice of pie is good for serving up a portion of desert. It's not good for making a judgement about how big the slice is, what percentage of 100 it is, or how it compares to other slices. People have trouble comparing angles and areas to each other. Controlled studies show that people will overestimate the percentage that a pie slice area represents. This is because we have trouble calculating the area based on the space between the two angles that define the slice. This picture shows how a pie chart is useless in determing the largest value when you have to compare pie slices.   You can't compare angles and slice areas to each other. Human perception and cognition is poor when viewing angles and areas and trying to make a mental comparison. Pie charts overload the working memory, forcing the person to make complicated calculations, and at the same time make a decision based on those comparisons. What's the point of showing a pie chart when you want to compare data, except to say, "well, the slices are almost the same, but I'm not really sure which one is bigger, or by how much, or what order they are from largest to smallest. But the colors sure are pretty. Plus, I like round things. Oh,was I suppose to make some important business decision? Sorry." Bad Choices and Bad Decisions Interaction Designers, Graphic Artists, Report Builders, Software Developers, and Executives have all made the decision to use pie charts in their reports, software applications, and dashboards. It was a bad decision. It was a poor choice. There are always better options and choices, yet the designer still made the decision to use a pie chart. I'll expore why people make such poor choices in my upcoming blog entires. (Hint: It has more to do with emotions than with analytical thinking.) I've outlined my opinions and arguments about the evils of using pie charts in "Countdown of Top 10 Reasons to Never Ever Use a Pie Chart." Each of my next 10 blog entries will support these arguments with illustrations, examples, and references to studies. But my goal is not to continuously and endlessly rage against the evils of using pie charts. This blog is not about pie charts. This blog is about understanding why designers choose to use a pie chart. Why, when give better alternatives, and acknowledging the shortcomings of pie charts, do designers over and over again still freely choose to place a pie chart in a report? As an extra treat and parting shot, check out the nice pie chart that Wikipedia uses to illustrate the United States population by state.   Remember, somebody chose to use this pie chart, with all its glorious colors, and post it on Wikipedia for all the world to see. My next blog will give you a better alternative for displaying comparable data - the sorted bar chart.

  • Position:absolute

    - by Andrew
    I have I have a div called logo. I want the logo to be on top of other areas and to overlap into the the preface top of a drupal site, the logo currently sits in the header area. I looked up position absolute and I think that what I need to use but when I use position absolute the logo disappears, I can see it if I use position fixed, relative etc. I thought the logo was being hidden because I was not using a z-index but even with that I cant see the logo. What am I doing wrong? #logo { position: absolute; top: 30px; /* 30 pixels from the top of the page */ left: 80px; /* 80 pixels from the left hand side */ z-index:1099; border: 1px solid red; /* So we can see what is happening */ } Also does anyone know of a really good free online css course? • jQuery: Highlight element under mouse cursor?

    - by Ralph
    I'm trying to create an "element picker" in jQuery, like Firebug has. Basically, I want to highlight the element underneath the user's mouse. Here's what I've got so far, but it isn't working very well: $('*').mouseover(function (event) { var $this = $(this); $div.offset($this.offset()).width($this.width()).height($this.height()); return false; }); var $div = $('<div>') .css({ 'background-color': 'rgba(255,0,0,.5)', 'position': 'absolute', 'z-index': '65535' }) .appendTo('body'); Basically, I'm injecting a div into the DOM that has a semi-transparent background. Then I listen for the mouseover event on every element, then move the div so that it covers that element. Right now, this just makes the whole page go red as soon as you move your mouse over the page. How can I get this to work nicer? Edit: Pretty sure the problem is that as soon as my mouse touches the page, the body gets selected, and then as I move my mouse around, none of the moments get passed through the highligher because its overtop of everything. Firebug Digging through Firebug source code, I found this: drawBoxModel: function(el) { // avoid error when the element is not attached a document if (!el || !el.parentNode) return; var box = Firebug.browser.getElementBox(el); var windowSize = Firebug.browser.getWindowSize(); var scrollPosition = Firebug.browser.getWindowScrollPosition(); // element may be occluded by the chrome, when in frame mode var offsetHeight = Firebug.chrome.type == "frame" ? FirebugChrome.height : 0; // if element box is not inside the viewport, don't draw the box model if (box.top > scrollPosition.top + windowSize.height - offsetHeight || box.left > scrollPosition.left + windowSize.width || scrollPosition.top > box.top + box.height || scrollPosition.left > box.left + box.width ) return; var top = box.top; var left = box.left; var height = box.height; var width = box.width; var margin = Firebug.browser.getMeasurementBox(el, "margin"); var padding = Firebug.browser.getMeasurementBox(el, "padding"); var border = Firebug.browser.getMeasurementBox(el, "border"); boxModelStyle.top = top - margin.top + "px"; boxModelStyle.left = left - margin.left + "px"; boxModelStyle.height = height + margin.top + margin.bottom + "px"; boxModelStyle.width = width + margin.left + margin.right + "px"; boxBorderStyle.top = margin.top + "px"; boxBorderStyle.left = margin.left + "px"; boxBorderStyle.height = height + "px"; boxBorderStyle.width = width + "px"; boxPaddingStyle.top = margin.top + border.top + "px"; boxPaddingStyle.left = margin.left + border.left + "px"; boxPaddingStyle.height = height - border.top - border.bottom + "px"; boxPaddingStyle.width = width - border.left - border.right + "px"; boxContentStyle.top = margin.top + border.top + padding.top + "px"; boxContentStyle.left = margin.left + border.left + padding.left + "px"; boxContentStyle.height = height - border.top - padding.top - padding.bottom - border.bottom + "px"; boxContentStyle.width = width - border.left - padding.left - padding.right - border.right + "px"; if (!boxModelVisible) this.showBoxModel(); }, hideBoxModel: function() { if (!boxModelVisible) return; offlineFragment.appendChild(boxModel); boxModelVisible = false; }, showBoxModel: function() { if (boxModelVisible) return; if (outlineVisible) this.hideOutline(); Firebug.browser.document.getElementsByTagName("body")[0].appendChild(boxModel); boxModelVisible = true; } Looks like they're using a standard div + css to draw it..... just have to figure out how they're handling the events now... (this file is 28K lines long) There's also this snippet, which I guess retrieves the appropriate object.... although I can't figure out how. They're looking for a class "objectLink-element"... and I have no idea what this "repObject" is. onMouseMove: function(event) { var target = event.srcElement || event.target; var object = getAncestorByClass(target, "objectLink-element"); object = object ? object.repObject : null; if(object && instanceOf(object, "Element") && object.nodeType == 1) { if(object != lastHighlightedObject) { Firebug.Inspector.drawBoxModel(object); object = lastHighlightedObject; } } else Firebug.Inspector.hideBoxModel(); }, I'm thinking that maybe when the mousemove or mouseover event fires for the highlighter node I can somehow pass it along instead? Maybe to node it's covering...?

  • Loop append div and repeat

    - by Diego Vieira
    I have this code <div class="round-3-top"> <div class="round-2-top"> <div class="round-1-top"></div> <div class="round-1-bottom"></div> </div> <div class="round-2-bottom"> <div class="round-1-top"></div> <div class="round-1-bottom"></div> </div> </div> <div class="round-3-bottom"> <div class="round-2-top"> <div class="round-1-top"></div> <div class="round-1-bottom"></div> </div> <div class="round-2-bottom"> <div class="round-1-top"></div> <div class="round-1-bottom"></div> </div> </div> But i want generate dynamically, how i do that? Ex.: i have 4 rounds, this would be the generated code <div class="round-4-top"> <div class="round-3-top"> <div class="round-2-top"> <div class="round-1-top"></div> <div class="round-1-bottom"></div> </div> <div class="round-2-bottom"> <div class="round-1-top"></div> <div class="round-1-bottom"></div> </div> </div> <div class="round-3-bottom"> <div class="round-2-top"> <div class="round-1-top"></div> <div class="round-1-bottom"></div> </div> <div class="round-2-bottom"> <div class="round-1-top"></div> <div class="round-1-bottom"></div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="round-4-bottom"> <div class="round-3-top"> <div class="round-2-top"> <div class="round-1-top"></div> <div class="round-1-bottom"></div> </div> <div class="round-2-bottom"> <div class="round-1-top"></div> <div class="round-1-bottom"></div> </div> </div> <div class="round-3-bottom"> <div class="round-2-top"> <div class="round-1-top"></div> <div class="round-1-bottom"></div> </div> <div class="round-2-bottom"> <div class="round-1-top"></div> <div class="round-1-bottom"></div> </div> </div> </div> I try using TagBuilder in MVC C# but I can not do. What should happen is, if you are 3 rounds, adding he should go inside each div is like the example above. Any idea how can I develop it?

  • Is it possible to have an external server with in a companies firewall?

    - by Jonathan
    Hi guys, I am sure this is server admin 101,but I am unsure of the answer and would love some help. I am a software developer I have built an application for a client and am currently hosting it successfully on SliceHost. We are now coming out of Beta and the client wants to have the application within their Firewall, but they do not want to deal with headache of hosting and maintaining the server. Is there a way I can recommend that we put our server at SliceHost within their Firewall? Is that an easy thing to do? If that is not possible, what should I recommend to my client? Thanks! Jonathan

  • How are large companies handling the storing and cataloging of software installation disks?

    - by CT
    I just started working in the IT department of a small-medium sized construction company with about 200 users. One of my responsibilities is to setup and configure all new machines that come in. I would like suggestions on how to best manage the installation disks and licenses of the software that comes with them. Plus any additional licensed software such as Autocad, Photoshop, etc as well as peripheral driver disks such as printers and scanners. Right now every machine is associated and labeled with an asset id. All asset ids are kept in a spreadsheet with applicable serial numbers, current user, warranty info, and software licenses. The physical disks are then kept within a folder in a cabinet. Each folder is marked with the asset id number as well as the current user. My problems with this is that the system was not maintained very completely before I came to the company. There are plenty of software folders with no asset ids labeled on them. Plenty of missing software folders (most likely are a lot of the unlabeled folders). Folders with names but not asset ids. Machines get switched to different users without the folders and spreadsheet being updated. I am not saying this method would necessarily be bad if it was better implemented and managed, but if I am going to have to take a lot of time to fix this system currently in place. I thought I would ask the community first on how others manage this process in case there are easier, more efficient ways of doing so. Thank you.

  • FREE three days of online SharePoint 2010 development training for UK software houses Feb 9th to 11th

    - by Eric Nelson
    I have been working to get a SharePoint development course delivered online in February and March – online means lots of opportunities to ask questions. The first dates are now in place. The training is being delivered as a benefit for companies signed up to Microsoft Platform Ready. It is intended for UK based companies who develop software products* Agenda: Day 1 (Live Meeting 3 hours) 1:30 - 4:30 •         Getting Started with SharePoint: Understand why and how to start developing for SharePoint 2010 •         SharePoint 2010 Developer Roadmap:  Explore the new capabilities and features •         UI Enhancements: How to take advantage of the many UI enhancements including the fluent UI ribbon and  extensible dialog system. Day 2 (Live Meeting 3 hours) 1:30 - 4:30 •         Visual Studio 2010 Tools for SharePoint 2010: Overview of the project and item templates and a walkthrough of the designers •         Sandboxed Solutions: The new deployment model can help mitigate the risk of deploying custom code   •         LINQ to SharePoint:  SharePoint now fully supports LINQ for querying lists Day 3 (Live Meeting 3 hours) 1:30 - 4:30 •         Client Object Model: The Client OM can be accessed via web services, via a client (JavaScript) API, and via REST •         Accessing External Data: Business Connectivity Services (BCS) enables integration with back end systems •         Workflow: A powerful mechanism to create functionality using Windows Workflow Foundation Register for FREE (and tell your colleagues – we have a pretty decent capacity) To take advantage of this you need to: Sign your company up to Microsoft Platform Ready and record your SharePoint interest against one of your companies products Read about Microsoft Platform Ready Navigate to the “Get Technical Benefits” tab for SharePoint and click on Register Today You will then ultimately get an email with details of the Live Meeting to join on the 9th. But you should also favourite the team blog for any last minute details * Such companies are often referred to as an Independent Software Vendors. My team is focused on companies that create products used by many other companies or individuals. That could be a packaged product you can buy "off the shelf" or a Web Site offering a service - the definition is actually pretty wide these days :-) What it does not include is a company building software which will only be used by its own people.

  • Patterns for a tree of persistent data with multiple storage options?

    I have a real-world problem which I'll try to abstract into an illustrative example. So imagine I have data objects in a tree, where parent objects can access children, and children can access parents: // Interfaces interface IParent<TChild> { List<TChild> Children; } interface IChild<TParent> { TParent Parent; } // Classes class Top : IParent<Middle> {} class Middle : IParent<Bottom>, IChild<Top> {} class Bottom : IChild<Middle> {} // Usage var top = new Top(); var middles = top.Children; // List<Middle> foreach (var middle in middles) { var bottoms = middle.Children; // List<Bottom> foreach (var bottom in bottoms) { var middle = bottom.Parent; // Access the parent var top = middle.Parent; // Access the grandparent } } All three data objects have properties that are persisted in two data stores (e.g. a database and a web service), and they need to reflect and synchronise with the stores. Some objects only request from the web service, some only write to it. Data Mapper My favourite pattern for data access is Data Mapper, because it completely separates the data objects themselves from the communication with the data store: class TopMapper { public Top FetchById(int id) { var top = new Top(DataStore.TopDataById(id)); top.Children = MiddleMapper.FetchForTop(Top); return Top; } } class MiddleMapper { public Middle FetchById(int id) { var middle = new Middle(DataStore.MiddleDataById(id)); middle.Parent = TopMapper.FetchForMiddle(middle); middle.Children = BottomMapper.FetchForMiddle(bottom); return middle; } } This way I can have one mapper per data store, and build the object from the mapper I want, and then save it back using the mapper I want. There is a circular reference here, but I guess that's not a problem because most languages can just store memory references to the objects, so there won't actually be infinite data. The problem with this is that every time I want to construct a new Top, Middle or Bottom, it needs to build the entire object tree within that object's Parent or Children property, with all the data store requests and memory usage that that entails. And in real life my tree is much bigger than the one represented here, so that's a problem. Requests in the object In this the objects request their Parents and Children themselves: class Middle { private List<Bottom> _children = null; // cache public List<Bottom> Children { get { _children = _children ?? BottomMapper.FetchForMiddle(this); return _children; } set { BottomMapper.UpdateForMiddle(this, value); _children = value; } } } I think this is an example of the repository pattern. Is that correct? This solution seems neat - the data only gets requested from the data store when you need it, and thereafter it's stored in the object if you want to request it again, avoiding a further request. However, I have two different data sources. There's a database, but there's also a web service, and I need to be able to create an object from the web service and save it back to the database and then request it again from the database and update the web service. This also makes me uneasy because the data objects themselves are no longer ignorant of the data source. We've introduced a new dependency, not to mention a circular dependency, making it harder to test. And the objects now mask their communication with the database. Other solutions Are there any other solutions which could take care of the multiple stores problem but also mean that I don't need to build / request all the data every time?

  • (Open Source) Cloud-Filesystem to run a Database on Top?

    - by jens
    Hello, what are current "technologies and implementations" to get a filesystem with unlimited capacity by using single servers with their harddisk to form a "grid/cloud filesystem"? I need to have unlimited space (by adding further servers) but it must be a filesysem that is capable of running a database on top. I know of Apache Hadoop but that seems not be be Ideal for running a DB on top of it (or am I wrong??) And iSCSI seems to be "remote/networked" but I do not know how and if this is clusterable? thank you very much!! jens
