• How to stop a curl while requesting or stop the running php script?

  I using url to request remote urls that sometimes may very slow or just down. In this case, my php scripts still waiting for the response, it makes apache has to many requests stay in memory and then overload. I need a way to stop curl requesting or stop running php script when specified time passed. I'd tried declare(), it makes no sense for curl. Can someone know how to solve it? BTW: what is the effect of CURLOPT_CONNECTTIMEOUT and CURLOPT_TIMEOUT? They don't work like what I think.

• Using CGRectIntersectsRect for collision detection

  Hi guys, I've got a long rectangular image which is rotated at different kind of angles. However the frame of the rectangular image does not rotate along with the image and instead, the rotation causes the frame to to become larger to fit the rotated image. So when I used CGRectIntersectsRect, the collision detection is totally off because the other image colliding with the rectangular image will collide before it even reaches the visible area of the rect image. In case you don't really know what I'm talking about, have a look at the ascii drawing: normal rectangular image frame, O - pixels, |, – - frame |----------| |OOOOOOOOOO| |----------| after rotation |----------| |O | | O | | O | | O | | O | | O | | O | | O | | O | |----------| I've read through some of the collision articles but all of them are talking about collision with a normal straight rectangle and what I really want is collision with a slanted image, preferably pixel collision detection. • How can I call model methods or properties from Django Admin?

  Is there a natural way to display model methods or properties in the Django admin site? In my case I have base statistics for a character that are part of the model, but other things such as status effects which affect the total calculation for that statistic: class Character(models.Model): base_dexterity = models.IntegerField(default=0) @property def dexterity(stat_name): total = self.base_dexterity total += sum(s.dexterity for s in self.status.all()]) return total It would be nice if I could display the total calculated statistic alongside the field to change the base statistic in the Change Character admin page, but it is not clear to me how to incorporate that information into the page.

• ( Flex ) How can we get an imagesnapshot of the entire component without scrollbars?

  Hi there I can take snapshot of a component. But the problem is the component is lil bigger with scroll bars. The saved image has scrollbars (only the visible area is getting saved). What i need is I want the entire component to be saved as an image. This exact functionality is available while we print the component using FlexPrintJob, where by setting the FlexPrintJobScaleType.NONE. But here in my case i want it to be saved using ImageSnapShot ( not thru FlexPrintJob ). Thanks Advance, Sriss

• What tools are people using to measure SQL Server database performance?

  I've experimented with a number of techniques for monitoring the health of our SQL Servers, ranging from using the Management Data Warehouse functionality built into SQL Server 2008, through other commercial products such as Confio Ignite 8 and also of course rolling my own solution using perfmon, performance counters and collecting of various information from the dynamic management views and functions. What I am finding is that whilst each of these approaches has its own associated strengths, they all have associated weaknesses too. I feel that to actually get people within the organisation to take the monitoring of SQL Server performance seriously whatever solution we roll out has to be very simple and quick to use, must provide some form of a dashboard, and the act of monitoring must have minimal impact on the production databases (and perhaps even more importantly, it must be possible to prove that this is the case). So I'm interested to hear what others are using for this task? Any recommendations?

• Variable length Blob in hibernate?

  I have a byte[] member in one of my persistable classes. Normally, I'd just annotate it with @Lob and @Column(name="foo", size=). In this particular case, however, the length of the byte[] can vary a lot (from ~10KB all the way up to ~100MB). If I annotate the column with a size of 128MB, I feel like I'll be wasting a lot of space for the small and mid-sized objects. Is there a variable length blob type I can use? Will hibernate take care of all of this for me behind the scenes without wasting space? What's the best way to go about this? Thanks!

This may seem as an open-ended question but I'll surely accept the most impressive and upvoted answer ;) Basically, I could describe my own case - I just fail 5 times a day with my intuition cause very frequently I can be just not up-to-the-speed with my requirements/manager/team/etc. and I just have to make code quickly - that's why proper formalization in many cases stands aside. I want to gather some experience of yours - what was the most epic failure when you did rely on you implicit reasoning/intuitive knowledge/immediate perception etc. of course everything you describe should be related to programming/computers. It's mostly just to measure the danger of using that 'it's obvious..' words. I've made it com. wiki to be properly transformed after gathering enough views count. Thank you!

• Getting differences between WVGA800 and WVGA854 in Android Emulator

  So far I just have one XML layout file, and one drawable directory, drawable-hdpi. I first want to target the high density screens. I added a bunch of imagebuttons to a relativelayout and everything looks perfect in the WVGA800 emulator. The problem arises when I view it in the WVGA854 emulator. Not only do the imagebuttons not position the same, but the images are blurry. I used dip for the layout margins on the imagebuttons even though it shouldn't matter in this case because WVGA800 and 854 are both high density. What is the problem? Why would it look totally different on emulators that have the same density and almost have the same exact screen dimensions? Thanks!

• Getting Wikipedia infoboxes in a format that Ruby can understand

  I am trying to get the data from Wikipedia's infoboxes into a hash or something so that I can use it in my Ruby on Rails program. Specifically I'm interested in the Infobox company and Infobox person. The example I have been using is "Ford Motor Company". I want to get the company info for that and the person info for the people linked to in Ford's company box. I've tried figuring out how to do this from the Wikipedia API or DBPedia but I haven't had much luck. I know wikipedia can return some things as json which I could parse with ruby but I haven't been able to figure out how to get the infobox. In the case of DBPedia I am kind of lost on how to even query it to get the info for Ford Motor Company.

• Maven 2.1.0 not passing on system properties to Java virtual machine

  We use the command line to pass on system properties to the Java virtual machine when running our Hudson builds on a Linux box. It used to work quite well in 2.0.9 by since we upgraded to 2.1.0 it has stopped working altogether. The system properties just never make it to the Java virtual machine. I have created a small test project and indeed it does not work at all. I have attached it in case you want to give it a go. This should work just fine with Maven 2.0.9: mvn2.0.9 -Dsystem.test.property=test test But this will fail: mvn2.1 -Dsystem.test.property=test test The Java code simply does this assertTrue( System.getProperty("system.test.property") != null); , Apr 20, 2009; 12:44pm edward eric pedersson

• MembershipUser class CreateUser password paramter

  I'm using the ASP.NET Configuration for my users and their roles. I'm also using the MembershipUser class with its function CreateUser. I have it working, but was curious about something. When I add a new user and pass this function its password parameter (which in this case is coming from a textbox on the page). It seems like it only finds and accepts that textbox value when it is 6 chars or more. For example, if I type in ab123 it'll say object not set to instance of an object. However if I do abc123 it works fine. Where is that being told to do that. I didn't know if this was something I could change or where it might be doing that. Thanks.

  Hey everyone, So I'm new to Rails (teaching myself as a senior project in high school), and I'm trying to figure out how to modify these strings. Let's say someone writes the following string in a form: "you know you are a geek when" How can I automatically change it to this: "You know you are a geek when..."? • How does one bind to an List<DataRow> collection in WPF XAML?

  Using a DataTable or DataView, one can specify the binding in XAML for example as follows: <Image Source="{Binding Thumbnail}" /> In my case I have created a List collection of DataRow objects and the above is not working. This is my data source: List<DataRow> I could of course convert the List< to a DataTable, but I am curious if there was a way to specify the binding in XAML to access the "Thumbnail" column within the DataRow that is stored in a List< collection. • How to grab data from webpage in Chrome and output into Chrome extension popup?

  For a Google Chrome extension, none of the Javascript I write to manipulate the DOM of the extension popup.html seems to have any effect on the popup's DOM. • Mongrel with Ruby 1.9.

  When starting the server, I get this strange error after updating to Ruby 1.9: " [BUG] cross-thread violation on rb_gc() ruby 1.8.6 (2008-08-11) [i386-mswin32] This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. " My mongrel version is 1.1.6, which should be compatible with Ruby 1.9. I also still have the Ruby 1.8.6 installation, so i assume that for some reason mongrel tries to access that and kills ruby? My rails version is 2.3.4, in case it matters.

• How to set jQuery UI toggle programmatically?

  I noticed it is possible to set the value of a jQuery UI slider in the following way: $("#mySlider").slider("value", 42); This triggers the event handlers attached to the slider as expected. Now I'm trying to do the same trick using a button (toggle). There does not appear to be a nice way to do this in the API. I might just be missing something simple. I tried the following with no results: $("#myButton").button().click(); Any ideas how to handle that in this case are welcome. Note that it would be awesome to find a solution that applies for a buttonset as well.

• Do Eclipse's Refactoring Tools Violate The Java Language Specification?

  In Eclipse 3.5, say I have a package structure like this: tom.package1 tom.package1.packageA tom.package1.packageB if I right click on an the tom.package1 package and go to Refactor-Rename, an option "Rename subpackages" appears as a checkbox. If I select it, and then rename tom.package1 to tom.red my package structure ends up like this: tom.red tom.red.packageA tom.red.packageB Yet I hear that Java's packages are not hierarchical. The Java Tutorials back that up (see the section on Apparent Hierarchies of Packages). It certainly seems like Eclipse is treating packages as hierarchical in this case. I was curious why access specifiers couldn't allow/restrict access to "sub-packages" in a previous question because I KNEW I had seen "sub-packages" referenced somewhere before. So are Eclipse's refactoring tools intentionally misleading impressionable young minds by furthering the "sub-package" myth? Or am I misinterpreting something here?

  Hi all, I have to make a project to run successfully on a Linux machine. Right now my project works very well on windows machine. On Windows machine it is compiling and working fine. My project is using one ".lib" and one ".dll" file to do the tasks successfully on Windows. Can i use the same .lib file and .dll file on linux machine to build the project successfully? I am compiling the project with G++ and using GNU Makefile to do the task. What should i do in the case that i can not use the .LIB and .DLL file on Linux machine.   Project a cubic bezier p1,p2,p3,p4 onto the line p1,p4. When p2 or p3 does not project onto the line segment between p1 and p4, the curve will bulge out from the anchor points. Is there a way to calculate the T value where the tangent of the curve is perpendicular to the anchor line? This could also be stated as finding the T values where the projected curve is farthest from the center of the line segment p1,p4. When p2 and p3 project onto the line segment, then the solutions are 0 and 1 respectively. Is there an equation for solving the more interesting case? The T value seems to depend only on the distance of the mapped control points from the anchor line segment. I can determine the value by refining guesses, but I am hoping there is a better way.

  Hi, I am no expert in network security, so pardon if this question is not very smart :). I am automating logins to some machines using ssh. I am currently avoiding host-key warnings using StrictHostKeyChecking no. I naively understand that someone can impersonate as the server and I risk losing my password to him if that were the case. However, if I am using only public/private Key based authentication ( using PasswordAuthentication no ), can the intruder still cause harm? So basically, with ssh -o "StrictHostKeyChecking no" -o "PasswordAuthentication no" : 1) Can the intruder decipher my private key? 2) Are there any other security threats? regards, JP

  Hi, I have a site thats served in 2 flavours, English and French. Here's some code app/views/user/register.html.erb ----------------- <% form_for .....> <%= f.text_field :first_name %> <% end %> app/models/user.rb ------------------ class User < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :first_name end Now to display the error message in case if the site is being served in the French version, I have app/config/locales/fr.yml ------------------------- activerecord: errors: messages: empty: "ne peut pas être vide" So if someone does not fill in a first name, the validator takes the name of the field and appends the custom message for empty clause giving "First name ne peut pas être vide" which is incorrect, coz 'First name' in French is 'Prénom', hence it should be "Prénom ne peut pas être vide" Please can someone suggest a way of achieving the desired result.
