• Boolean issues in PHP

  I have a question regarding bools in php. I have a stored mysql proc that is returning a boolean. When this value is grabbed on the php side it displays the value as being a 0 or 1. This all seems fine to me and I have read in the php manual that php will interpret a 0 or 1 as false or true at compile time but this does not seem to be the case to me. I have gone a step further and casted my returned value with (bool) but this still does not seem to work. My if statements are not properly firing because of this. Does anyone know what is going on?   In my domain layer all domain objects emit events (of type InvalidDomainObjectEventHandler) to indicate invalid state when the IsValid property is called. • Is ruby ||= intelligent?

  I have a question regarding the ||= statement in ruby and this is of particular interest to me as I'm using it to write to memcache. What I'm wondering is, does ||= check the receiver first to see if it's set before calling that setter, or is it literally an alias to x = x || y This wouldn't really matter in the case of a normal variable but using something like: CACHE[:some_key] ||= "Some String" could possibly do a memcache write which is more expensive than a simple variable set. I couldn't find anything about ||= in the ruby api oddly enough so I haven't been able to answer this myself. Of course I know that: CACHE[:some_key] = "Some String" if CACHE[:some_key].nil? would achieve this, I'm just looking for the most terse syntax.

• MIDlet + BlackBerry API = verification error?

  Hi, Is there any way to write a MIDlet, but still use BlackBerry API classes and functions (including the APIs that require code signing)? In particular, I'm trying to use Kuix (http://www.kalmeo.org/projects/kuix). A pure MIDlet + Kuix (so without BlackBerry stuff) works perfectly after I converted the jar/jad to a cod file. As soon as I add BlackBerry API-stuff (CoverageInfo.COVERAGE_DIRECT in this case) I get a verification error when trying to run the cod file: Error starting $name: Module $name has verification error 2410 at offset 9a4f What can I do to solve this?

• Python: Remove items from a list while iterating in Python

  My problem is simple: I have a long list of elements that I want to iterate through and check every element against a condition. Depending on the outcome of the condition I would like to delete the current element of the list, and continue iterating over it as usual. I have read a few other threads on this matter. Two solutions seam to be proposed. Either make a dictionary out of the list (which implies making a copy of all the data that is already filling all the RAM in my case). Either walk the list in reverse (which breaks the concept of the alogrithm I want to implement). • MySQL - ERROR 1045 - Access denied

  In some way I have managed to get this error when I try to access into MySQL via the command line: [root@localhost ~]# mysql -u root -p Enter password: ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES) I have tried resetting the password without any luck using this HowTo. I have uninstalled mysql completley and reinstalled but I still get asked for a password. I have no idea why this is the case! Can someone please help me get a default install of MySQL. Environment Fedora Core 10, Full Root Access, Apache and PHP installed Thank you for any help!! EDIT To all those that would like to save themselves a few hours of "blood coughing" - when you uninstall MySQl completely delete everything that is left behind. If you don't do this, it will never be a FRESH install.

  Hi, I'm using LINQ to Entities on a database which structure is not known in advance. I use reflection to retrieve the information, and now have a list of strings with all the table names. Because I use LINQ, I also have the datasource encapsulated in a C# class (linqContext), with each table being a property of that class. What I want to achieve is this: Assume one of the strings in the table names list is "Employees". This is known in code, I want to do the following: linqContext.Employees.DoSomethingHere(); Is this possible? I know that if all the propertie were just items in a list, I could use the string as indexer, linqContext["Employees"]. However, this is not the case :(

  Hi. A "quicky": how can I get the size (width) of a NSString? I'm trying to see if the string width of a string to see if it is bigger than a given width of screen, case in which I have to "crop" it and append it with "...", getting the usual behavior of a UILabel. string.length won't do the trick since AAAAAAAA and iiiiii have the same length but different sizes (for example). I'm kind of stuck. Thanks a lot.

  From the javadoc for Session it states: A Session object is a single-threaded context for producing and consuming messages. So I understand that you shouldn't use a Session object from two different threads at the same time. What I'm unclear on is if you could use the Session object (or children such as a Queue) from a different thread than the one it created. In the case I'm working on, I'm considering putting my Session objects into a pool of available sessions that any thread could borrow from, use, and return to the pool when it is finished with it. Is this kosher? (Using ActiveMQ BTW, if that impacts the answer at all.)

• adjust selected File to FileFilter in a JFileChooser

  I'm writing a diagram editor in java. This app has the option to export to various standard image formats such as .jpg, .png etc. When the user clicks File-Export, you get a JFileChooser which has a number of FileFilters in it, for .jpg, .png etc. Now here is my question: Is there a way to have the extension of the default adjust to the selected file filter? E.g. if the document is named "lolcat" then the default option should be "lolcat.png" when the png filter is selected, and when the user selects the jpg file filter, the default should change to "lolcat.jpg" automatically. Is this possible? How can I do it? edit: Based on the answer below, I wrote some code. But it doesn't quite work yet. I've added a propertyChangeListener to the FILE_FILTER_CHANGED_PROPERTY, but it seems that within this method getSelectedFile() returns null. • How to change page author in wordpress?

  Ofc i know how to do that, but the thing is that i am using "User Role Editor" and i have one user group that can read and edit published pages. Now, i will be adding all the pages on that site, and we will have several users that will need to have only one page they can edit, so i need for that page to change "Page author" to that user. In case you didnt know, when user have "Edit published pages" enabled they can edit only pages where they are listed as author. Problem is i can only do that by going in phpmyadmin and changing the page_author field to the id of that user because that user group, like i said, can only read and edit published pages. That is why i can not change page author from "Edit page" page to user from that user group. So my question is: does anyone know any solution to this problem which does not involve me going to phpmyadmin and changing the id for page_author there?

• How do I use modulus for float/double?

  I'm creating an RPN calculator for a school project. I'm having trouble with the modulus operator. Since we're using the double data type, modulus won't work on floating point numbers. For example, 0.5 % 0.3 should return 0.2 but I'm getting a division by zero exception. The instruction says to use fmod(). I've looked everywhere for fmod(), including javadocs but I can't find it. I'm starting to think it's a method I'm going to have to create? edit: hmm, strange. I just plugged in those numbers again and it seems to be working fine...but just in case. Do I need to watch out using the mod operator in Java when using floating types? I know something like this can't be done in C++ (I think).

  I know that 10 years ago, typical clock precision equaled a system-tick, which was in the range of 10-30ms. Over the past years, precision was increased in multiple steps. Nowadays, there are ways to measure time intervals in actual nanoseconds. However, usual frameworks still return time with a precision of only around 15ms. My question is, which steps did increase the precision, how is it possible to measure in nanoseconds, and why are we still often getting less-than-microsecond precision (for instance in .NET). (Disclaimer: It strikes me as odd that this was not asked before, so I guess I missed this question when I searched. Please close and point me to the question in that case, thanks. I believe this belongs on SO and not on any other SOFU site. I understand the difference between precision and accuracy.)

• Easiest way of checking if a string consists of unique characters?

  I need to check in Java if a word consists of unique letters (case insensitive). As straight solution is boring, I came up with: For every char in a string check if indexOf(char) == lastIndexOf(char). Add all chars to HashSet and check if set size == string length. Convert a string to a char array, sort it alphabetically, loop through array elements and check if c[i] == c[i+1]. Currently I like #2 the most, seems like the easiest way. Any other interesting solutions?

• Calculated property with JPA / Hibernate

  My Java bean has a childCount property. This property is not mapped to a database column. Instead, it should be calculated by the database with a COUNT() function operating on the join of my Java bean and its children. It would be even better if this property could be calculated on demand / "lazily", but this is not mandatory. In the worst case scenario, I can set this bean's property with HQL or the Criteria API, but I would prefer not to. The Hibernate @Formula annotation may help, but I could barely find any documentation. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

• Unable to use opacity animation w/ position:relative on children

  Consider the following (applies to all IE6+ browsers -- including IE8): <div id="picture"> <div class="thumb" style="position: relative;"><img .. /></div> <p>Some description</p> </div> When I animate the opacity down to 0 it only works if I change the .thumb class to position: static. This has bigger problems because I use that to constrain absolutely positioned children to that container. I've tried all the hacks I have discovered, none work (bg-color, zoom, etc).   I need to perform a conversion of characters from UTF-8 to ISO-8859-1 in Java without losing for example all of the UTF-8 specific punctuation. Ideally would like these to be converted to equivalents in ISO (e.g. there are probably 5 different single quotes in UTF-8 and would like them all converted to ISO single quote character). String.getBytes("ISO-8859-1") just won't do the trick in this case as it will lose the UTF-8-specific chars. Do you know of any ready mappings or libraries in Java that would map UTF-8 specific characters to ISO?

  I know that MongoDB can scale vertically. What about if I running out of disk? I am currently using EC2 with EBS. As you know, I have to assign EBS for a fixed size. What if the mongodb growth bigger than the EBS size? Do I have to create a larger EBS and Copy & Paste the files? Or shall we start more MongoDB instance and each connect to different EBS disk? In such case, I could connect to a different instance for different databases.

• File.mkdir is not working and I can't understand why

  Hello, I've this brief snippet: String target = baseFolder.toString() + entryName; target = target.substring(0, target.length() - 1); File targetdir = new File(target); if (!targetdir.mkdirs()) { throw new Exception("Errore nell'estrazione del file zip"); } doesn't mattere if I leave the last char (that is usually a slash). It's done this way to work on both unix and windows. The path is actually obtained from the URI of the base folder. As you can see from baseFolder.toString() (baseFolder is of type URI and is correct). The base folder actually exists. I can't debug this because all I get is true or false from mkdir, no other explanations.The weird thing is that baseFolder is created as well with mkdir and in that case it works. Now I'm under windows. the value of target just before the creation of targetdir is "file:/C:/Users/dario/jCommesse/jCommesseDB" if I cut and paste it (without the last entry) in windows explore it works...

  I tried out Alex Kuhl's ajax script to upload images to Django 1.4. My first question is why I'm getting an empty page with firebug telling me I have two errors: fileuploader.js (line 4): syntax error <!DOCTYPE html> In my template html: qq is not defined var uploader = new qq.FileUploader( { Here is my entire html file for it: http://pastebin.com/NjbV5gMn This post suggests that either some script has 404'd or the src attribute is empty, which would cause the doctype error. But that doesn't seem to be the case here. As for why qq is not defined, I'm not sure what is wrong. Django can clearly find the fileuploader.js just fine from my static folder. My second question is why the ajax code uses {{ csrf_token }} instead of {% csrf_token %}. • Maven2 compiles my tests, but doesn't run them

  I have a simple Maven2 project with tests written for TestNG. When I say mvn test Maven2 compiles my test, but don't run them. I already checked this page: http://maven.apache.org/general.html#test-property-name. This is not my case. Anybody can help?
