• Where to start? (3D Modeling)

  I'm looking for a good resource to start learning 3d modeling. I'm looking for something that starts with the basics (e.g. terminology; what are quads, triangles etc.) before/while going into the actual modeling. Book, website, video, anything will do. I'm only concerned with the quality of the tutorials, how thorough they are. I have experience with texturing, level design and so on - but I've never created anything more than simple shapes/editing existing assets.

• Declaring interface in the same file as the base class, is it a good practice?

  To be interchangable and testable, normally services with logic needs to have interface, e.g. public class FooService: IFooService { ... } Design-wise, I agree with this, but one of the things that bothers me with this approach is that for one service you will need to declare two things (the class and the interface), and in our team, normally two files (one for the class and one for the interface). Another discomfort is the difficulty in navigation because using "Go to definition" in IDE (VS2010) will point to the interface (since other classes refer to the interface), not the actual class. I was thinking that writing IFooService in the same file as FooService will reduce the above weirdness. After all, IFooService and FooService are very related. Is this a good practice? Is there a good reason that IFooService must be located in its own file?

• Recommended 2D Game Engine for prototyping

  What high-level game engine would you recommend to develop a 2D game prototype on windows? (or mac/linux if you wish) The kind of things I mean by "high-level" includes (but is definitely not limited to): not having to manage low-level stuff like screen buffers, graphics contexts having an API to draw geometric shapes well, I was going to omit it but I guess being based on an actual "high-level" language is a plus (automatic resource management and the existence a reasonable set of data structures in the standard library come to mind). It seems to me that Flash is the proverbial elephant in the room for this query but I'd very much like to see different answers based on all kinds of languages or SDKs.

From my point of view, the design of generics in Java is worse, for instance: there is no possibility to specify variance one can get around the previous limitation by using wildcards, but this means the burden of specifying variance goes on the caller instead of the library designer one cannot use a type constructor in generics What were the constraints in Java that forced Odersky to design this mechanism for generics instead of the more flexible one he devised for Scala? Was he just savvier a few years later or there were actual limitations due to Java?

• Creating my own kill cam

  I plan on creating my own kill cam system for a sandbox tool set. After thinking about the mechanics of the kill cam itself, however, I'm quite lost. I'm trying to recreate the ones commonly seen in call of duty games that show, from the view of the killer, the actual killing scene. My Thoughts: -I can't just keep in memory when people kill others because I wouldn't know when to start the 'recording process'. There is on way for me to accurately determine when somebody is 'about' to kill someone. -My only real idea so far is to have a complete duplicate of everything loaded off to the side copying all the movement from the original world but with a 10 second delay. That way, all the kill cams would be 10 seconds long and the persons camera would just be moved to the second world of their killer. My Questions: Is there already an accepted way to do this? Does anybody have any good ideas for something like this? Thanks if you can!

  Imagine you have implemented the creation of a nice path-based star shape in Lisp. Then you discover Processing and you re-implement the whole code, because Processing/Java/Java2D is different. Then you want to tinker with libcinder, so you port your code to C++/Cairo. You are (re)writing a lot of boiler plate code, while the actual requirement "create a star shape" (or "create a path, moveto x y, lineto x y") has not changed. What are the options to encapsulate those implementation details? Some sort of pragmatic meta-programming? Maybe an expert system? How would you define your core business logic as language-independent as possible?

• Redirect cPanel url to something different

  I have masterdomain.com which is the domain that hosts other domains. On cPanel normally you can get to the actual cPanel by visiting cpanel.hosteddomainA.com, hosteddomainA.com/cpanel or hosteddomainA.com:2082 What I would like to accomplish is to have the hosteddomains cPanel auto redirect to something like my.masterdomain.com:2082 . Doing this would allow me to adequately throw an SSL cert in my. and really offer a secure experience to my users. I know it's possible because bluehost does the same. They redirect to my.bluehost.com. Can anyone think of how to do it?

  As the title states, I'm thinking of making a simple-card-game based website, using persistent connection technology (Something like signalR) for the actual game part of it. I've never planned a site to use this technology, and wondering for those who have, are there any additional things that need to be taken into consideration for the site structure? I'm planning on using the asp MVC framework for the whole thing, and starting off with some simple game (e.g. card based Rock/Paper/Scissors) for proof of concept (to see if I can get it working how I think it would in my head).

• SQL Server - Rebuilding Indexes

  Goal: Rebuild indexes in SQL server. This can be done one at a time or with the example script below to rebuild all index for a specified table or for all tables in a given database. Why? The data in indexes gets fragmented over time. That means that as the index grows, the newly added rows to the index are physically stored in other sections of the allocated database storage space. Kind of like when you load your Christmas shopping into the trunk of your car and it is full you continue to load some on the back seat, in the same way some storage buffer is created for your index but once that runs out the data is then stored in other storage space and your data in your index is no longer stored in contiguous physical pages. To access the index the database manager has to "string together" disparate fragments to create the full-index and create one contiguous set of pages for that index. Defragmentation fixes that. What does the fragmentation affect?Depending of course on how large the table is and how fragmented the data is, can cause SQL Server to perform unnecessary data reads, slowing down SQL Server’s performance.Which index to rebuild?As a rule consider that when reorganize a table's clustered index, all other non-clustered indexes on that same table will automatically be rebuilt. • Ubuntu - prettier bootloader

  I hate how when I turn on the computer it just (after the hp logo, which I hate having also), shows white text on a black background. I'm wondering if there's easy ways to customize this (I'm choosing between Windows 7 and two separate Ubuntu 10.10 installs). I've read a little about some complicated ways to do this, but is there not some simpler ways by installing a package on ubuntu or something? I don't want to hack a bunch of code together to get a simple effect. I'm hoping for actual images and having like the windows 7 logo and ubuntu logo to choose from. Ideas?

• Outline Shader Effect for Orthogonal Geometry in XNA

  I just recently started learning the art of shading, but I can't give an outline width to 2D, concave geometry when restrained to a single vertex/pixel shader technique (thanks to XNA). the shape I need to give an outline to has smooth, per-vertex coloring, as well as opacity. The outline, which has smooth, per-vertex coloring, variable width, and opacity cannot interfere with the original shape's colors. A pixel depth border detection algorithm won't work because pixel depth isn't a 3.0 semantic. expanding geometry / redrawing won't work because it interferes with the original shape's colors. I'm wondering if I can do something with the stencil/depth buffer outside of the shader functions since I have access to that through the graphics device. But I don't believe I'm able to manipulate actual values. How might I do this?

• Fast software color interpolating triangle rasterization technique

  I'm implementing a software renderer with this rasterization method, however, I was wondering if there is a possibility to improve it, or if there exists an alternative technique that is much faster. I'm specifically interested in rendering small triangles, like the ones from this 100k poly dragon: As you can see, the method I'm using is not perfect either, as it leaves small gaps from time to time (at least I think that's what's happening). • Common practice in handling bounce message

  At now I mainly create a mail account separately (with different domain name [email protected]) and i add this mail as one return path. So the bounce message will only go to that mailbox and i parse the mail message one by one to check the failure receipent and the error code, then i convert the error code to the actual error message. Finally, the error message and the fail receipent's mail are post to my system and let my system user check the bounce information. Is it a common practice? Since i am worry about the mail other from bounce message have sent to my mail box, that would be a disaster if i parse them without filter them out, but how can i filter out between bounce message and normal mail?   I recently upgraded my desktop mac to Precise and now can't get past the Ubuntu 12.04 splash page. How can I make my computer finish booting again? I'm able to ssh into the machine and poke around, but the actual screen freezes at the splash.

• Plan variable and call dependencies

  I'd like to write down the design of my program to understand the dependencies and calls better. I know there are class diagrams which show inheritance and attribute variables. However I'd also like to document the input parameters to method functions and in particular which calls the methods function executes inside (e.g. on the input parameters). Also sometimes it might be useful to show how actual objects are connected (if there is a standard structure). This way I can have a better understanding of the modules and design before starting to program. Can you suggest a method to do this software design? It should be one-to-one to programming code structure so that I really notice all quirks beforehand (instead of high-level design where thing are hard to implement without further work). Maybe some special diagram or tool or a combination? It is static dependency and call design rather than time dependent execution monitoring. (I use Python if you have any specialized recommendations).

• Are "Compile to JavaScript" Frameworks Hostile to Continuous Integration?

  Lately we've been looking at ways to improve automated testing and related tooling of our enterprise-level GWT web app. I've realized that in some ways, GWT is a bit hostile to automated testing, mainly because of the nature of the long GWT compile times from Java to JS. This makes unit testing somewhat challenging, but it also puts some roadblocks up for testing in a CI environment. I've also found out that some of our build and deployment processes are somewhat complicated due to the nature of GWT's compile process. Is this a general problem for "compile to JS" frameworks for webapps? I don't have much experience with them, but I can see some potential problems for automated testing and continuous integration and deployment. Some issues I see: Long build and compile times preventing quick deployments Language the app is developed in != JS, preventing good unit testing Obfuscated JS in the actual app makes it more like a executable than a web app Are these issues present in other similar frameworks, or is this more a GWT issue?

• Does the EU cookie law apply to an EU site that is hosted outside of the EU?

  I have been reading up about this EU cookie law, and have also had in depth conversations with my girlfriend who is a solicitor/lawyer and with colleagues while building websites. While we are now working towards implementing a way to abide by the EU law, I have thought of something which no one really knows the answer to and has caused a few arguments. It's my understanding that any website in the EU must abide by these cookie laws, which is understandable. However, say if I were to have a .co.uk or .eu domain name pointing to a website which is hosted in America for example, do I still need to abide by the EU laws even though the website is hosted outside of the EU? One person I have asked has said that because the domain name is .co.uk or .eu (a European TLD) then the website is still accountable under EU law. Another person I have asked has said because the actual website is held outside of the EU, it doesn't actually have to bother with this law.

• What is the best way to implement paginated text editing in Python?

  I'm trying to build a formatted text editor in python. I need the editor to be paginated on edit mode. Same as in all popular word processors - when the user is editing the document what he/she sees is a representation of the actual, physical, page. I've tried looking into PySide but I can't find any ready solution to this, nor I can work out a way to do it myself. I am totally open to new technologies, so if you think Python is not the right choice here I would love to hear about new stuff (especially when I'm this new to UI coding). It only needs to be cross-platform and let me do rapid development (hence me looking for an out-of-the-box solution to this). Please suggest the best way to implement this. Please also note that I am looking for either a ready solution or an advice on how to tackle this. Thank you very much !

• Dual monitor working incorrectly on a Dell XPS 8300 with an AMD Radeon HD 6450

  I have been having trouble with Ubuntu on my Dell XPS 8300 (Actual image of the desktop). I have heard that the AMD Radeon HD 6450 has trouble with Ubuntu, and I believe that it is the source of the problem (though I am no expert by any means). When I boot the computer and choose to run Ubuntu, on a rare occasion both monitors (I have an AOC and a Samsung) will display their correct desktops, however most of the time, one of the desktops will be shifted away from its proper position and awkwardly positioned on the screen (showing the login box in the middle/right etc). If anyone has any advice on how to fix this, that would be greatly appreciated.

• How can I generate signed distance fields (2D) in real time, fast?

  In a previous question, it was suggested that signed distance fields can be precomputed, loaded at runtime and then used from there. For reasons I will explain at the end of this question (for people interested), I need to create the distance fields in real time. There are some papers out there for different methods which are supposed to be viable in real-time environments, such as methods for Chamfer distance transforms and Voronoi diagram-approximation based transforms (as suggested in this presentation by the Pixeljunk Shooter dev guy), but I (and thus can be assumed a lot of other people) have a very hard time actually putting them to use, since they're usually long, largely bloated with math and not very algorithmic in their explanation. What algorithm would you suggest for creating the distance fields in real-time (favourably on the GPU) especially considering the resulting quality of the distance fields? Since I'm looking for an actual explanation/tutorial as opposed to a link to just another paper or slide, this question will receive a bounty once it's eligible for one :-). • How can I remove a Unity window entry?

  I installed Eclipse long time ago from the Software Center, but recently I needed a newer version than the repo one. Then I removed it via Software Center and installed Eclipse Kepler in /opt. However, the window opened is not called Eclipse, it is the name of an old program I made (Eclipse- GMM). However, that's not the main issue, but that even if I created a .desktop file it launches the same, having "two" eclipses in the dock, the actual program and the launcher. How can I remove Unity .desktop cache or wathever it is this?

• Max Brightness in ubuntu lower when compared to windows

  I've installed Ubuntu 14.04 on my (new) ThinkPad Edge330. Everything worked quite well so far. I've noticed that the screen wasn't that bright and was a bit disappointed of the ThinkPad, but then I realized that the brightness was much better on a parallel windows 7 installation I did later on. I already used this tip: Max brightness on NetBook I did increase the brightness to an acceptable level (could be the actual max. brightness, or is there a way to increase it even further?) But now unfortunately I cannot change the screen brightness at all anymore. Not by using the FN keys or in the system settings.

How has it affected your business in the following ways: Ability to launch and iterate over business driven logic Ability to have "business users" perform the actual modification of those rules rather than developers. Ability to comprehend the business rules in general. Quality of the software releases. More or less bugs from the end-user's POV? Speed of the applications. If you had to do it all over again, what would you do differently? Lastly, I'm looking for a qualification of your answer w/ respect to the architecture. Would you do the same thing if you were deploying to a 1-machine setup vs. your architecture vs. a multi-tier cloud-based distributed architecture using 1000s of machines? How would it be different?
