• Need a push in the right direction, to write my first functional test in Rails

  I've read quiet a bit of documentation over the last few days about testing in Rails, I'm sitting down to write my first real test and not 100% sure how to tie what I have learned together to achieve the following functional test (testing a controller) I need to send a GET request to a URL and pass 3 parameters (simple web-service), if the functionality works the keyword true is simply returned, otherwise the keyword false is returned - its in only value returned & not contained in any <div>, <span> or other tags. The test should assert that if "true" is returned the test is successful. This is probably very simple so apologies for such a non-challenging question. If anyone could point me in the write direction on how I can get started, particularly how I can test the response, I'd be very grateful!

• I need to debug my BrowserHelperObject (BHO) (in C++) after a internet explorer 8 crash in Release m

  Hi, here is the situation, i'm developping a Browser Helper Object (BHO) in C++ with Visual Studio 2008, and i learned that the memory wasn't managed the same way in Debug mode than in Release mode. So when i run my BHO in debug mode, internet explorer 8 works just fine and i got no erros at all, the browser stays alive forever, but as soon as i compile it in release mode, i got no errors, no message, nothing, but after 5 minutes i can see through the task manager that internet explorer instances are just eating memory and then the browser just stop responding every time. Please, I really need some hint on how to get a feedback on what could be the error. I heard that, often it was happening because of memory mismanagement. I need a software that just grab a memory dump or something when iexplorer crashes to help me find the problem. Any help is appreciated, I'll be looking for responses every single days, thank you.

• Simple explaination of Arraylists

  I'm new to programming and I'm looking for a simple answer to build my foundation of understanding Arrays. I've used google and searched this site. After a bit of trial and error I get how to make and reference Arrays like thing[3] gets you the fourth thing in the thing array(since 0 is the first). which lets me do something like thing[3].getStupidNumber() to get the StupidNumber of the 4th thing in the thing array. Then I get to ArrayLists which seem to have much more utility but I cant make logical sense of them like Arrays. When i search I cant find this or word this correctly and thus far everything else I've learned clicked easily. so say I make an ArrayList thing with 5 things in it. how do i get to the .getStupidNumber() method inside the fourth thing, if possible? I think if I learn this I can learn the rest on my own. Thanks!

I know the question I asked is posted many time in this forum. And I have tired all of the solutions available, but no luck I may case I am trying to read a dat file which is basically a msg/feed file having more than 22000 Characters. Every line may or may not be of same length. My requirement is to convert the file to fixed line length character file. I have a logic that work well using vb script, however its pretty slow. I have checked with For f/ but no luck. The only delimiter I have is EOT, which i can see in Textpad but not in notepad. I have tried with \n, token=. Please help me in resolving the issue. • Does importing of packages change visibility of classes?

  I jsut learned that A class may be declared with the modifier public, in which case that class is visible to all classes everywhere. If a class has no modifier (the default, also known as package-private), it is visible only within its own package. This is a clear statement. But this information interfere with my understanding of importing of packages (which easily can be wrong). I thought that importing a package I make classes from the imported package visible to the importing class. So, how does it work? Are public classes visible to all classes everywhere under condition that the package containing the public class is imported? Or there is not such a condition? What about the package-private classes? They are invisible no mater if the containing package was imported or not? ADDED: It seems to me that I got 2 answers which are marked as good (up-voted) and which contradict eachother.

• In which layer should I join 2 entities together?

  I use Spring MVC and a regular JDBC. I've just learned that I should separate business process into layers which are presentation layer, controller layer, service layer, and repository/DAO layer. Now suppose that I have an Entity called Person that can have multiple Jobs. Job itself is another entity which have its own properties. From what I gathered, the repository layer only manages one entity. Now I have one entity that contains another entity. Where do I "join" them? The service layer? Suppose I want to get a person whose job isn't known yet (lazy loading). But the system might ask what the job of that particular person is later on. What is the role of each layer in this case? Please let me know if I need to add any detail into this question.

  I'm trying to retrieve the ip address of the local machine in my program. The OS running is Ubuntu 8.10. I tried using gethostname() and gethostbyname to do it. All I can get is 127.0.1.1. I learned that it seems to be a Debian thing: This thread explained it. The content of my /etc/hosts file is also: 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.1.1 mymachine In this case, is there any other way to programactically (prefer C or C++) to get the ip address without modifying the system file on the machine? How have your opinions on programming as a craft changed since you've gained more experience away from academia? I've become more and more about design a la McConnell : wide use of encapsulation, quality code that gives you warm fuzzy feelings when you read it, maintainability over execution performance, etc..., whereas many of my co-workers have followed a different path of fewer middlemen layers getting in the way, code that is right out in the open and easier to locate, even if harder to read, and performance-centric designs. What have you learned about the craft of software design which has changed the way you approach coding since leaving the academic world?

• Does Python Django support custom SQL and denormalized databases with no Foreign Key relationships?

  I've just started learning Python Django and have a lot of experience building high traffic websites using PHP and MySQL. What worries me so far is Python's overly optimistic approach that you will never need to write custom SQL and that it automatically creates all these Foreign Key relationships in your database. The one thing I've learned in the last few years of building Chess.com is that its impossible to NOT write custom SQL when you're dealing with something like MySQL that frequently needs to be told what indexes it should use (or avoid), and that Foreign Keys are a death sentence. Percona's strongest recommendation was for us to remove all FKs for optimal performance. Is there a way in Django to do this in the models file? create relationships without creating actual DB FKs? Or is there a way to start at the database level, design/create my database, and then have Django reverse engineer the models file?

• Laying out JPanels to make a simple GUI

  Hello, first of all, this is more or less my first GUI and ive learned Java for not more then a week, so it might contain some serious programming errors. What i have right now is: Buttons and labels are part of OptionPanel and are on the left, DrawingPanel is about 5x5 px in size and is on the right. What I am trying to do is a simple test, to get me more familiar with the GUI.   I have just learned how to use the SQLite database for local storage in a Webkit web browser (e.g. Google Chrome or Apple Safari) using the Javascript API. For example the "Sticky Notes" application. However, I know that SQLite has a function called sqlite_create_function() that lets you add custom functions to your instance of SQLite on the fly which can then be used inside SQL queries. This function is described at sqlite.org. I also know that you can call an equivalent of this API in Ruby as described here. QUESTION: Can anybody show me how to do this in Javascript - i.e. write a custom function in Javascript that can be bound into the SQLite database at run time to be called by the SQLite engine, and all inside a Webkit browser?

I've learned that in c it's not straightforward to return an array, so I'd like to return this as a struct instead. • Tiling rectangles seamlessly in WPF while maintaing subpixel accuracy?

  I have had the problem described in the question Tiling rectangles seamlessly in WPF, but am not really happy with the answers given there. I am painting a bar chart by painting lots of rectangles right next to each other. Depending on the scale of the canvas containing them, there are small gaps visible between some of them as a result from sub-pixel rendering. I learned from the above question how to make my rectangles fit with the screen pixels, removing that effect. Unfortunately, my chart may display way more bars than there are pixels. Apart from the tiny gaps (which manifest as a periodic change in color saturation), this works well. If I snap each bar with the screen pixels, most of the bars vanish, though, so I am looking for another solution. Thanks in advance!

  I got a MacMini at work for development, and was asked to follow this article to install SVN on it: http://developer.apple.com/tools/subversionxcode.html The article assumes that only Apache 1.3 was installed and asks the reader to install Apache 2. I've since learned that the MacMini has Apache 2 already installed. So basically I've installed two versions of Apache 2. The preinstalled one has access to PHP, so I wanted to remove my version, but I'm unsure of how. My version has httpd.conf stored at: /usr/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf And the preinstalled version has it stored at: /etc/apache2/httpd.conf, which I believe is an alias for /private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf Thanks for your help

  I have created a table in my Ruby on Rails application that I am building called Tags. It is a blog application so I allow the user to associate tags with a post and do this through a :posts, :has_many = tags and Tag belongs_to :post association. Now that I have my Tags table I am trying to see how I would render the view such that it displays the tag and tag count. (it should be noted that I am trying to render this in the /views/posts/index.html.erb file). For instance, if there are 10 entries in the Tag table for tag_name Sports. How can I display Sports (10) in the view. I am not looking to do this for a specific tag but rather, somehow search the table, combine like tags and display a list of all tags with counts next to them. (I really want these to be a link to a list of posts that contain that tag but I learned early on only to ask one question at a time). Hope that makes sense.

  Hi, I’m working on tuning and increasing the performance of my IBM DB2 version 9.7 database. I’ve been searching around the net for the last couple of days and learned that if I created my tables in COMPRESS mode and created one more bufferpool and set both of them to access 1024mb, then the performance in my queries should increase because of the less I/Os to the disks. However, when I run my time analysis, the performance Decrease. I added the new additions to my regular database with the indexes I’ve used all the time. Each time I search google I come up with the statement that: Increased bufferpool size and several bufferpools AND a table compression SHOULD prove to get better performance. I’m very puzzled about the total unexpected result. Are there some tuning mechanisms I’ve forgot or does anyone have a explanation for this odd behavior? Sincerely Mestika

  From the recent news from the Apple, I learned that one has to use C/C++/Objective-C for iPhone App. Accordingly, it's not possible to use MacPython or similar to make iPhone App. But as the python/ruby interpreter itself is written in C, isn't it OK to make python/ruby interpreter for iPhone to run the scripts on iphone? • Why does using cons to create a pair of two lists produce a list and two elements?

  I've started learning Scheme, for fun mostly, and because I've never used a functional language before. I chose Scheme because I wanted to read SICP for a long time. Anyway, I'm currently learning about lists, and before that I learned about cons, car and cdr. And there's an example that creates a list of lists with cons, like this : (cons (list 1 2) (list 3 4)) The resulting list is ((1 2) 3 4), which doesn't make sense to me, I would expect ((1 2)(3 4)) to be the result (a list made out of two lists). Why does it behave like that? I realize that if I were to use car, I would get (1 2), and cdr I'd get (3 4) becaue cdr always returns "the rest", but I don't understand why the list isn't made of two lists?

• In QT 4.6 w/ Webkit: How to handle popup window requests (WebView::createWindow)?

  Hi all, I'm new to QT and have been trying to create a test browser. What I'm trying to do now is to handle js-based popup requests. After reading the QT documentation, I learned that I need to re-implement the QWebView::createWindow method to do just that. Now I've re-implemented this method, but it seems to be not called when I try to click a link that triggers a popup window. Can any one help me? Do I need to subclass both the WebView and WebPage classes? If so, how do I do that? I'm quite new to QT and I've done tons of searches and found nothing. Thank you all in advance for any hint and advice!
