• Best thing to do about projects supporting multiple versions of Visual Studio?

  I have an open source project that works on .Net 2.0 and up. The thing is though that I prefer to use Visual Studio 2012, which forces the solution and project files to only work with VS2010/2012. What exactly should I do? I don't want for my users to have to create a solution from scratch if they don't have access to VS2010, but yet, I also don't want to attempt to keep 3 different project files in sync(VS2005, VS2008, and VS2010/2012) What is the usual solution for this?

• Low-profile, PCI Express, x1 video card with VGA-out?

  I just bought an Acer Aspire EasyStore H340 system (http://us.acer.com/acer/productv.do?LanguageISOCtxParam=en&kcond61e.c2att101=54825&sp=page16e&ctx2.c2att1=25&link=ln438e&CountryISOCtxParam=US&ctx1g.c2att92=450&ctx1.att21k=1&CRC=936243954) It comes with Windows Home Server, which I don't particularly care for (too dumbed down for my liking)--I bought the box mainly for the form factor, and intend to install Server 2008 on it and have it run as a small domain controller. The geniuses at Acer however went out of their way to ensure you can only run Home Server--you can only connect to it via the Home Server Connector software, as it has no video-out whatsoever (so essentially, there's no way to even get into the BIOS). It only has a low-profile, PCI Express x1 slot. It turns out to be way harder than I thought to locate a video card that both has an x1 connector, and is low-profile (I'd really rather not snip the bracket at the back just so it'll fit the case). I know they're out there, and I've seen one with Display Port outputs, but I don't have a monitor with this connection. So to reiterate, it needs to be: - x1 connector - low profile - VGA out (though DVI would be okay; I have some spare adapters) Can anyone recommend anything at all?

• Visual Studio 2010 RC with .net 4 beta 2

  Does anyone know if it is possible to use Visual Studio 2010 RC with the beta 2 version of the .NET 4 framework? The reason I need to use the beta 2 version and not the RC is that there isn't an Expression Blend that can support the .NET 4 RC. I uninstalled the .NET 4 framework that installed with Visual Studio 2010, then I reinstalled the .NET 4 version Beta 2. But now when I launch Visual Studio, I get an error message saying "The operation could not be completed" and it shuts down. How can I make this work? Thanks!

  I want to keep the console (output) window open to view the output of the project I am working on. I have enabled the start without debugging option and added the button to the debugging toolbar, but alas it fails to keep it open nicely like in visual studio 2008. I have to add cin.getline() etc etc etc to get it to stay open, but I don't want to type it. Any suggestions as to alter it Visual Studio 2010 to keep it open, or any debugging tricks to make it easier to view output for longer than a flash. Visual Studio used to have a "Press any key to continue prompt" I want it back...

• Configuration management in support of scientific computing

  For the past few years I have been involved with developing and maintaining a system for forecasting near-shore waves. Our team has just received a significant grant for further development and as a result we are taking the opportunity to refactor many components of the old system. We will also be receiving a new server to run the model and so I am taking this opportunity to consider how we set up the system. Basically, the steps that need to happen are: Some standard packages and libraries such as compilers and databases need to be downloaded and installed. Some custom scientific models need to be downloaded and compiled from source as they are not commonly provided as packages. New users need to be created to manage the databases and run the models. A suite of scripts that manage model-database interaction needs to be checked out from source code control and installed. Crontabs need to be set up to run the scripts at regular intervals in order to generate forecasts. I have been pondering applying tools such as Puppet, Capistrano or Fabric to automate the above steps. It seems perfectly possible to implement most of the above functionality except there are a couple usage cases that I am wondering about: During my preliminary research, I have found few examples and little discussion on how to use these systems to abstract and automate the process of building custom components from source. We may have to deploy on machines that are isolated from the Internet- i.e. all configuration and set up files will have to come in on a USB key that can be inserted into a terminal that can connect to the server that will run the models. I see this as an opportunity to learn a new tool that will help me automate my workflow, but I am unsure which tool I should start with. If any member of the community could suggest a tool that would support the above workflow and the issues specific to scientific computing, I would be very grateful. Our production server will be running Linux, but support for OS X would be a bonus as it would allow the development team to setup test installations outside of VirtualBox.

• Tokyo Tyrant ulog / update log management.

  I'm testing Tokyo Tyrant in a master-master setup and have found the ulog grows out of control and locks up the disk. At first I found the -ulim option useful and limited the logfile size, however it simply rolls over to a new log, leaving the old ones to clutter up the partition. I suppose I'll write a shell script that will delete ulogs older than X, once I find out how far back Tokyo Tyrant needs in the update log in order to failover. Does anyone have any experience with this Tokyo Tyrant? Do you have a feel (acknowledging that every install is different based on what is being stored) for the optimal ulog size vs how far back a Tokyo Tyrant instance needs to look in the ulog to assume master status?   Hi guys, Today i licensed and downloaded the WPF RibbonControlsLibrary from Microsoft which is an extension to the WPF Toolkit. I've read some tutorials to implement an examlpe here When I tried the example is sadly noticed that in XAML i could not access the referenced library. xmlns:ribbon="clr-namespace:Microsoft.Windows.Controls.Ribbon;assembly=RibbonControlsLibrary" <ribbon:Ribbon .... > I found out that the Problem lies within Visual Studio 2010 , because in Visual Studio 2008 everything works fine. Does anyone have a solution for this issue or a workaround to use the library in Visual Studio 2010 ?

• Digital Asset Management, iPhoto / Aperture server... alternative

  Afternoon, Clients, 10 : All Apples running either Leopard or Snow Leopard Server : Snow Leopard server, (and I have a old Dell Poweredge 650 at home running Gentoo 2.6, if anybody as a Linux solution). The situation: I work in small design company with 8 people, at present we are looking to consolidate all our image files onto one location, at present we each use our preferred single user DAM solution, be it, Adobe Bridge, iPhoto/Aperture (some don't bother at all) The filetypes commonly used are .psd, .pdf, .eps, .tiff, .jpg and RAW image files. Ideally what is needed: Centralised on one server, but allows us to search via spotlight (not essential, but would be nice) Include searchable metadata information such as date, location, title Open-source or as low cost as possibly Allow simultaneous users to import files So far, I have looked at a few open source DAM, systems, such as Razuna, Gallery (not strictly DAM), ResourceSpace, Notre-DAM, while these are brilliant and open-source, they don't integrate as smoothly with the Desktop as iPhoto and aperture. For iPhoto and aperture, I have tried creating a Shared library on the server (a tad laggy), and also using a drive with no permissions, put a library and letting each client read from it, however if they want to put images onto the library only, it's only supports one user at a time writing to the library... Any ideas what could fulfill our needs? Or is it time to bite the bullet for FinalCut Server? Thanks in advance.

  Possible Duplicate: What is the most effective solution you used to label cables? Yes i know there are a lot of howtos and already answered questions about this topic, like this one: How do you organise the cables in your racks? Currently i am searching the web for different techniques (alternatives) for labeling the cables at the server racks and/or data centers. Unfortunately i do not have any experience with labeling/documentation of network cables in a large scale. As far as I could lookup by now the current labeling techniques are coloring and a self defined print-labeling technique (numbering, text) maybe also according to a standard which are usually used. I want to know if QR, RFID (ok RFID in a data center would be stupid due to the radio frequency wouldn't it be?), Barcodes or similar (??) have already been used by some administrators or why they did not consider such techniques at all? Too complicated (with QR scanner etc..) if you are in front of the cables and want to get quick feedback for what the cable is? What alternatives are out there? Advantages/Disadvantages? Best-Practice? I would appreciate any help on this topic, thank you! Regards, Alex

  We are looking to turn an internal tool we have developed into a Visual Studio Package that we would sell to other developers. The tool will impact the custom editor and/or custom languages. Visual Studio 2010 has redesigned the API's heavily to simplify much of the work involved for these types of integration but the key question we have is: What is the typical adoption pace of new Visual Studio versions? Is there any information out there on adoption rates based on history? How many shops are still using 2005? This will help us to consider whether to target just 2010 using the new APIs or whether trying to go back and support 2008 (maybe 2005) and testing it forward.

• Change Management Software

  I manage an 80,000 user CIS application written in Uniface. Every form in the application, and many of its processes, are represented by .frm files. We have hundreds of these files and 5 instances of the application. Instances include multiple production installations which must be kept sync'd. We do not get MD5 from our vendor for files that are released to us as patches. We have been using a spreadsheet to track changes, but this is far from ideal. Is there a commercial application that can be purchased that will allow us to track changes to the instances? Thank you all! EDIT: Patches are released as zip files with either FRM files in them or SQL files or a mix of both. SQL files will contain statements that need to be run in Oracle. Patches are also assigned unique patch numbers.

  I just installed SQL Server 2008 Express on my windows 7 machine. I previously had 2005 on here and used it just fine with the old SQL Server Management Studio Express. I was able to connect with no problems to my PC-NAME\SQLEXPRESS instance. I uninstalled 2005 and SQL Server Management Studio Express. I then installed SQL Server 2008 Express on my machine and elected to have it install SQL Server Management Studio. Now, when I try to connect to PC-NAME\SQLEXPRESS (with Windows Authentication, like I always did), I get the following message: Cannot connect to PC-NAME\SQLEXPRESS. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1) For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=-1&LinkId=20476 When I went to the help link it mentions, the help page suggests the following: * Make sure that the SQL Server Browser service is started on the server. * Use the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration tool to enable SQL Server to accept remote connections. I did try starting the SQL Server Browser, but don't see that the Surface Area Configuration is installed with this express version. I had seen another user with an almost exact same issue that was missing the database engine on install. If that were the case how could i test for that and where would i go to download that install. • Linker problem linking boost in Visual Studio 2008

  Hi, I have a rather obscure linking problem in Visual Studio 2008. The linker error message is: "LNK1104: cannot open file 'boost_thread-vc90-mt-gd-1_38.lib'". All pathes and dependencies are set. What I noticed though is that Visual Studio misses boost_thread-vc90-mt-gd-1_38.lib and not libboost_thread-vc90-mt-gd-1_38.lib (notice the lib at the beginning of the file name). I added the .lib as libboost_thread-vc90-mt-gd-1_38.lib to the project and it appears as libboost_thread-vc90-mt-gd-1_38.lib in the command line. Why does Visual Studio the beginning of the file name?

  Hi, I am trying to extend Visual Studio 2010 RC to be able to use a custom programming language. The first two things I've tried to do is a syntax highlight/Intellisense feature (easily done, thanks to "Ook!" sample from PDC09) and a possibility to create new project templates (i.e. be able to open *.myproj files). For this second task, I can't find any easy tutorials or samples. Most samples are for Visual Studio 2008 (as for IronPython integration) or even VS2003. The few samples available for VS2010 do not work (including MPFProj) or do not compile, and are too hard to understand. Is there any easy-to-understand sample, either using MPFProj or a standalone solution, showing how to integrate templates for a custom language inside Visual Studio 2010?

  SQL Server Edition: 2008 Enterprise Visual Studio: 2010 w/ .NET 4.0 SSMS 2008 Addin - Data Scripter project source code on CodePlex references Microsoft.SqlServer.SqlTools.VSIntegration.dll I have referenced the DLL under <<Microsoft SQL Server install location>>\100\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE But here is the oddity. Microsoft.SqlServer.SqlTools.VSIntegration.dll contains a namespace Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.VSIntegration, which in turn contains ServiceCache (public sealed). As soon as I add the reference, ServiceCache is highlighted (meaning there is no reference issue) But the problem arises when I compile the project and VS 2010 throws up an error that it cannot find ServiceCache. The name 'ServiceCache' does not exist in the current context Why is that ServiceCache is not visible during compile time but looks like it's available right after adding the assembly? And Reflector does show that ServiceCache is part of the assembly that the project is referencing, but Visual Studio intellisense fails to display it. Any had this kind of problem? [UPDATE] Some screenshots Reflector clearly shows ServiceCache But Visual Studio 2010 says, otherwise...

  I've read several articles that tell you how to add text to the output window in visual studio from within an Add-On (specifically, a visual studio 2008 integration package, via the visual studio 2008 SDK 1.1), but no examples of how to read text from the output window. My goal is to parse text from the debug output window while debugging a certain application (TRACE output and possibly stdin/stdout). The IVsOutputWindowPane interface has no methods for reading in text from the output window. The documentation seems to imply that it is possible, but it doesn't provide an example: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb166236(VS.80).aspx Quote: In addition, the OutputWindow and OutputWindowPane objects add some higher-level functionality to make it easier to enumerate the Output window panes and to retrieve text from the panes. • Visual Studio 2008 Crashes When Opening Project Properties

  I have a multi-project .NET application which I am developing in Visual Studio 2008. If I try to open the project properties for one of my projects (to change settings or publish) Visual Studio immediately closes. There is no prompt to send a report to Microsoft, and two consecutive errors logged in the Event Viewer: .NET Runtime version 2.0.50727.3053 - Fatal Execution Engine Error (7A035E00) (80131506) .NET Runtime version 2.0.50727.3053 - Fatal Execution Engine Error (7A2E0F92) (0) If I delete all the .user and .suo files in my solution, I can once again publish and access project properties. The error, however, returns over time. This seems to suggest that the .suo or .user files are getting corrupted by Visual Studio. Has anyone else had this issue or know how to fix the problem?

My main goal is to be able to access a password keyring through an SSH connection to a machine that has no graphical user interface. If there are no good unix password keyrings out there, what would be a better way to store personal passwords in a central location?

  Hi, I'm new to this site but have found the articles and feedback very useful. We have a Server Room which our Organisation owns and controls, yet there are several thirs party companies that have open access to this room. As such, we have been asked to put together a protocol paper that stipulates the standards that we expect to be adhered to when working in this room. Other than the monitoring of UPS loads, Air Cooling functionality, alarm systems etc, does any one have any guidance on the kind of issues that need to be documented to make this protocol all encompassing? I'm thinking along the lines of not leaving cardboard or other combustibles in the room, not having food and drink in the room, not altering the fabric of the building by drilling through walls etc?   Our company has grown quite quickly and I am facing new tasks which I did not think I'd need to deal with. Recently we've come ot a point where we have 100+ Devices (Routers, Bridges, Computers, Laptops, VOIP Phones etc). The other day I was quite frightened when I asked for an inventory and no one had one. I want to start tagging all equipment and recording serials to begin tracking our inventory and ensuring we have a proper record of what equipment we have. Does anyone have advice as to how to go about 1. Convincing the higher ups why we need to do this and 2. What software or strategies might work? Keep in mind this is not for furniture, office equipment etc but IT specific equipment. I'm concerned over people 1. Stealing the physical devices and 2. Losing track of configuration data etc in case we'd need to do a wipe and restore

• Cannot change the target CPU to x86 Or x64 in Visual Studio 2005

  I am trying to build a website application and specify the target CPU as x86 instead of Any CPU. The only choices I have in Configuration Manager under the "Active solution platform:" drop-down list are: "Any CPU", "Edit..", and "New...". In the "Project Contexts" portion of the "Configuration Manager" window, it lists 3 columns: "Project", "Configuration" and "Platform". Under the "Platform" column, my only choice is ".Net". when the "Active solution configuration" is set to, "Debug". When the, ""Active solution configuration" is set to "Release", then I can choose either, ".Net" or "Any CPU" under the "Platform" column. I am using Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition. This website was previously built using Visual Studio .NET and was recently upgraded using the Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition Upgrade Wizard. I need to target x86 specifically because the are components used in the project that are only x86 compatible.
