• Putting a Java/Slick game on your website?

  I've made a simple little 2D game in Java using Slick and I want to embed it in my website. I'm just a little confused as to how to go about it, I'm guessing I need to export it as a WAR file? Sorry if this isn't really specific but oddly enough I couldn't find any information on this subject. I think I may lack the basic vernacular to describe my question, because most of my google and other searches turn up completely unrelated results any help would be appreciated, I just need a starting point. • How to completely uninstall LXDE (12.04)?

  I'm trying to remove LXDE from my 12.04 system. I've tried running the following commands (as root from a terminal): apt-get remove lxde apt-get purge lxde apt-get autoremove I've also tried a rather lengthy command that was linked to from another question. However, when I log in, LXDE is still presented as an environment choice, and it still functions perfectly well, as if I've done nothing. I ran the above commands again, but got the following message: package . . . is not installed, so not removed. So, where do I go from here, short of re-installing Ubuntu and all my programs?

• Performance impact of not implementing relationships at the database level?

  Let's imagine a data model with customers and invoices. There is a 1 to n relationship between a customer and its invoices. We uses an ORM (like Hibernate). One can explicitely implement the 1-n relationship (using JPA for example) or not. If not, then one must do a bit more work to fetch invoices. However, it is much easier to maintain, improve and develop the data model of applications where relationships between objects are not explicitely implemented in the database. My question is, has anyone noticed a significant performance impact when not implementing the relationships in the database?

• Is it wrong to use a boolean parameter to determine behavior?

  I have seen a practice from time to time that "feels" wrong, but I can't quite articulate what is wrong about it. Or maybe it's just my prejudice. Here goes: A developer defines a method with a boolean as one of its parameters, and that method calls another, and so on, and eventually that boolean is used, solely to determine whether or not to take a certain action. This might be used, for example, to allow the action only if the user has certain rights, or perhaps if we are (or aren't) in test mode or batch mode or live mode, or perhaps only when the system is in a certain state. Well there is always another way to do it, whether by querying when it is time to take the action (rather than passing the parameter), or by having multiple versions of the method, or multiple implementations of the class, etc. My question isn't so much how to improve this, but rather whether or not it really is wrong (as I suspect), and if it is, what is wrong about it.

  I'm currently using godaddy for all of my company domains, and I'm very unsatisfied with their service, specially with their site, so we are trying to migrate those domains to another provider. The question is, How do I transfer my domains to another domain registrar? I'm not talking about transferring domain records (A, MX...) but to use the same domains with another provider, and redo all the configuration again. For example, one of our blogs is hosted in Slicehost and we feel very confortable with their record editing tool.   Is there a debian/ubuntu policy on softlinking things to another location in opt once they're installed properly in usr/share or usr/lib? Here's a simple example: Packaging up dnsenum. It's a REALLY simple package (4 files). A perl script, two wordlists, and a readme. So from what I gather: The wordlists should go in usr/share/dnsenum/* The perl script itself would go in usr/lib/dnsenum/ The readme would go in usr/share/doc/dnsenum/ Add a wrapper bash script that goes in bin and just passes arguments to dnsenum.pl. The question is this: If there are various tools that provide wordlists or some other shared resource, is there a policy on linking all the wordlists from different packages in to /opt/wordlists/ ? It seems like the "right" thing to do respecting the directory structure while still making things convenient.

  I tried asking this question on the Facebook forums but got no answer, maybe someone here might be able to help me with this. I have a Facebook account and within that same account is my Facebook page for my business. Problem is every time that I try to use Instagram to upload a photo it gets uploaded to my personal/primary Facebook page and not the business page which is under the same email address and password. Instagram ask for this email address and password but how can I just have Instagram upload it to my business page and not my personal page? Or at very least how can I do both?

• It is worth planning before jumping in the code?

  I always thought that planning is important for a game. But i don't know at which point. Some are telling me to code instead of planning but i feel like its still important because when you will be in the code you will know what to do next more easily. I am currently working on a game that will have lots of content so i decided to start a design document introducing thoses content and at a side-level i am doing proofs of concept to check if it can be done. Parts of each proofs of concept then could be used later in the real game. EDIT: I am working alone on this project. So my question is : It is worth planning before jumping in the code ? Im still interested to know what others have to say about this. Cause i still get some poeple saying i should code instead of thinking.. so what your opinion on this ?

  I have a general question about creating a drawing application, the language could be C++ or ObjectiveC with OpenGL. I would like to hear what are the best methods and practices for storing strokes data. Think of the many iPad apps that allow you to draw with your finger (or a stylus) or any other similar function on a desktop app. To summarize, the data structure must: be highly responsive to the movement store precise values (close in space / time) usable for rendering the strokes with complex textures (textures based on the dynamic of the stroke etc) exportable to a text file for saving/loading

• What Part of Your Project Should be in Source Code Control?

  A fellow developer has started work on a new Drupal project, and the sysadmin has suggested that they should only put the sites/default subdirectory in source control, because it "will make updates easily scriptable." Setting aside that somewhat dubious claim, it raises another question -- what files should be under source control? And is there a situation where some large chunk of files should be excluded? My opinion is that the entire tree for the project should be under control, and this would be true for a Drupal project, rails, or anything else. This seems like a no-brainer -- you clearly need versioning for your framework as much as you do for any custom code you write. That said, I would love to get other opinions on this. Are there any arguments for not having everything under control? Is this sysadmin a BOFH?

• Dropbox install stuck at 99%, how do I fix it? (and any dpkg errors)

  I tried to install Dropbox using How to install Dropbox?, or with apt-get install nautilus-dropbox. Dropbox loads until 99% and then hangs, causing the system to go to 100% cpu usage. If I reboot or close the terminal, I sometimes get dpkg errors which prevent me from using apt-get or Software Center to perform any package management functions. I would like to resolve all these and just get Dropbox working. How do I do that? Note: This question is possibly answered in two parts: The accepted answer tells you how to install Dropbox. But if you have dpkg errors, see this answer before you use answer 1 to install Dropbox.

  I have a general coding standard question. Is it bad practice to initialize and create an object in multiple methods depending on the outcome of a users choice. So for example if the user quits a poker game, create the poker hand with the cards the user has received, even if < 5, and if the user played till the end create object to show completed hand to show outcome of the game. The key is that the object will only be created once in actuality, there are just different paths and parameters is will receive depending on if the user folded, or played on to the showdown.

• Why dd is not a reliable command to write bootable .iso files to USB thumb drive?

  As the answers here indicate Ubuntu .iso s are not expected to boot if copied with dd to a USB thumb drive. Now my question is why is so that some Linux distributions have the option to directly write their bootable .iso file to a thumb drive with dd but some (read Ubuntu) have not(for Ubuntu I think it has to be converted to .img first). Is it for some architectural difference in .isos? Or is it due to any limitation of dd itself?I don't know if it is off-topic here. I can move it to a more proper place if the community thinks so or suggests one. Some explanation would be appreciable.

  I have natty, and i have installed kubuntu-desktop package. before installing it, everything was fine but after that, this thing happens: when I'm typing, after stroking a key, screen blacks out, fan speeds up, and i have to turn off machine by pressing power button. it just happens in many different apps (chromium, hotot, kde proxy settings, ...) and in every environment: unity, kde, gnome 2. i don't know what details i must provide with this question, and i don't like to remove my kde desktop, or re-install my ubuntu. any ideas are appreciated ;-)

  My question is essentially entirely in the title, but let me add some points to prevent some "why on earth would you want to do that" sort of answers: This is more of a mind experiment than an attempt to implement real software. For fun. Don't worry about computational speed or the number of available memory bytes. Computers get faster and better all of the time. Imagine we have two data files: Mother.dna and Father.dna. What else would be required? (Bonus point for someone who tells me approx how many GB each file will be, and if the size of the files are exactly the same number of bytes for everyone alive on Earth!) There would ideally need to be a way to see what the egg becomes as it becomes a human adult. If you fancy, feel free to outline the design. I am initially thinking that there'd need to be some sort of volumetric voxel-based 3D environment for simulation purposes.

  I have a web application that allows the user to choose the timezone from the list. The list is very long (pretty much all CLDR-supported timezones). So the question is - how should I represent it? How should it be sorted - alphabetically or by timezone offset? What information should each item contain - offset, location, long name (like Europe/Zurich) or short name (like CET)? Should I display information about DST or only current offset? Let's say I can't right now do something like fancy maps OS configuration dialogs display, so the list is the only option. However I want to make the list look nice. Any best practices how it's done?

  This question already has an answer here: Are there any OO-principles that are practically applicable for Javascript? 2 answers I am primarily a Java programmer. Because of its OO principles and the general paradigm of Java programming, like wrapping things in static variables, and having things return specific types, heavily aids me in "visualizing" a program. Instead of thinking of a big program, I can, instead, focus on smaller organized parts of my eventual program, and add functionality and build up from there. Thus, I have trouble programming in other languages. Or at least, I have not been able to program in the same ability as I do in Java compared to other languages. I know Javascript has OO principles, so I'd like to learn this language in a OO-based like I would program with Java. Is this possible?

• BIOS Always Freezes Instantly

  I'm not sure if this is necessarily a Ubuntu question, but I've only had the problem since I installed 12.10. When I turn my computer on, the BIOS screen comes up as usual and... nothing else. When I press any key, I hear a loud beep and there's no response. I've tried looking for similar problems, but in most cases people are at least able to interact with their BIOS even if their OS doesn't load. It seems as though it's just completely freezing as soon as I turn it on.

  I want to purchase a number of 3D models from TurboSquid and animate them in an XNA game. I wrote a lot of games from 1985-1999 and have recently become involved with XNA. Now I would like to port one of my old games to the XBOX. I do have a background in 3D animation; but that was years ago.   Well I have installed avast anti virus on Ubuntu 12.04. But after updating, it crashes! So I have made some tweaks like below: Press Ctrl+Alt+T to open the Terminal. When it opens, run the command below. sudo gedit /etc/init.d/rcS Type your password and hit Enter. When the text file opens, add the line: sysctl -w kernel.shmmax=128000000 Make sure the line you added is before: exec /etc/init.d/rc S This is what it should look like: #! /bin/sh # rcS # # Call all S??* scripts in /etc/rcS.d/ in numerical/alphabetical order # sysctl -w kernel.shmmax=128000000 exec /etc/init.d/rc S Save the file. Reboot. My question is: Did I do anything wrong? I mean as I have made some tweaks, will it lower the security of Avast down like viruses do? Please if you are a programmer check this if it contains bug or harmful intentions... Thanks.

I am working as a PHP Web Developer I like being a crafts man and creating things so that is the reason to combine the programming with web development.
