• Creating Ubuntu bootable disk on my phone

  I want to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop but because I have a complete shortage of writable CDs and DVDs, I wan't to create a bootable USB stick (on Windows). However, the only USB stick I currently have lying around is my HTC phone (HTC Touch HD with 8Gb memory). I was following the Ubuntu guide to create a bootable usb stick with pendrivelinux, however in the last step it shows me that it wants to do more than just copying the .iso file to the USB drive: My question: can I safely proceed without wiping the current OS off my phone (Windows Mobile 6.1) and use it to install Ubuntu?

• CakePHP pair programming practise

  We are on the stage of planning a CakePHP project. It is a relatively a big project for us, as a developer+project manager, I want to hire someone to work with me. But what I really want is to spend less time on actual coding, without losing control of the code quality. What I want to do is that I will design all the functions of the project in CakePHP, at least all the model's functions, and leave the implementation part to the coder who I am going to hire. But my worry is still if I am going to lose control of the code quality using this approach? is it feasible to do so or it is going to turn this project to a chaos. I recently discussed & visited some of the websites which states that java is better then .net, a I also discussed with some of the experience persons all suggested me to switch to java of course spring, struts etc. As Java developer is being paid high then .net one. I personally think I should go for web services SOAP, XML etc. thanks to all for response I also want to know if I can only move to webservices ex. What are different paths one can choose as a programmer and what are the common frameworks/languages/platforms in those paths. Currently I'm well versed with C/C++ and Python and I'm a beginner with Django. I want to know this because I can't decide what to proceed with after this, which route to take. • How do I create a subdomain for a site hosted by someone who does not allow it?

  I want to create a subdomain for a site hosted by Jimdo (a DIY website builder). Jimdo does not allow subdomains however. I am trying to find a workaround where a subdomain is hosted elsewhere but everything else remains as it is. E.g. I use their email service and I want to keep it. The domain is not hosted by Jimdo, but by a host that allows me to edit my zones. It points to the Jimdo NS. I have independent hosting where I have NS information. This is where I want to host my subdomain. My thinking was that I could use ZoneEdit as a "fork" that allows me to keep using my Jimdo page like before and, at the same time, directs a subdomain to another host. Provided this is possible: Question: How do I configure ZoneEdit CNAME or NS records to forward visitors to my website and my email to my Jimdo mail account while pointing a subdomain to another host?

• DirectCompute information

  I've been trying to make use of the GPU as part of a project of mine. I've looked into both CUDA and OpenCL, but the lack of information showing you how to introduce these into a project is shocking. Even their dedicated forum groups are dead. So now, I'm looking into DirectCompute. From what I can tell, it's simply a new type of shader file that makes use of HLSL. My question is this, does my program (aside from being DirectX 10 / 11 ) need its structure changed? I mean, is it simply a case of creating the CS file, setting in the project like I would any other shader, and watch the magic happen? Any information on this would be appreciated.

• Only sdb shows up when installing 12.04 on new Dell inspiron 14z

  I got my brand new Dell Inspiron 14z yesterday, but failed to install Ubuntu. I can boot from a USB stick, and it works well. When trying to install, I confirm that the laptop is connected to the internet etc (as in the 2nd picture in the installation guide: How do I install Ubuntu?). When pressing "Continue" I do not get the question on installation type (alongside/replace/something else). Instead I get a window where I can select partitions: // Picture removed due to low reputation... The problem is that I can only select sdb in the drop drop down box, and I can do do nothing with sdb (like adding partitions etc). The main disk (sda) is partitioned using Gparted the following way: // Picture removed due to low reputation As far as I understand from other threads on askubuntu, this should work... What can I do to install Ubuntu alongside with Windows 7?

• XNA content.load Dependancy

  Quick question, My project i'm building for test purposes is working fine but i have dependencies flying around everywhere due to the XNA framework. In Update i have gametime passed everywhere... this is okay. In Draw i have gametime & spritebatch passed everywhere... this is okay. My issue is in the content.load textures/sounds/fonts. I have them as public variables ie Texture1 = Content.load(of texture2d)("Texture1") I'm passing a 'Game1' pointer into the constructor of every new class being instantiated to gain access to these variables. Am i missing an OOP trick to prevent me having to pass a pointer to 'game1' to every New class?

  I have asked this question some time before as well - but here is the main problem out: MBR was defect, I used Boot-Repair that I could access my Win-xp partition With windows ext3 readers I can't access Under live-cds i can't access to my Ubuntu partition (not able to mount them) I didn't format them accidentialy or earsed them nor overwrote them. Just a Ubuntu update was running last day and a win. update Can't boot in Ubuntu after windows upgrade and here: http://vanceance.blogspot.co.at/2012/11/testdisk-on-my-pc.html as it seems if an post is on site 3 and had been answered with wathever if it helped or not - i "refresh" it with this more exactly post options i cant use: -format the entire hdd or one of the partitions thx if you have new infos for me

• Not assigning Bugs to a specific user

  My question: Is there a benefit to NOT assigning a Bug to a particular developer? Leaving it to the team as-a-whole? Our department has decided to be more Agile by not assigning Bugs/Defects to individuals. Using Team Foundation Server 2012, we'll place all Bugs in a development team's "Area" but leave the "Assigned To" field blank. The idea is that the team will create a Task work item which will be assigned to an individual and the Task will link to the Bug. The Team as a whole will therefore take responsibility for the Bug, not an individual, aligning to Scrum - apparently. I see the down side. The reporting tools built into TFS become less useful when you cannot sort by assigned vs unassigned, let alone sorting by which user Bugs are assigned. Is there a benefit I'm not seeing? Besides encouraging teamwork by putting the responsibility on the team-as-a-whole instead of an individual?

• What is the benefit of not using Hungarian notation?

  One of the things I struggle with is not using Hungarian notation. I don't want to have to go to the variable definition just to see what type it is. When a project gets extensive, it's nice to be able to look at a variable prefixed by 'bool' and know that it's looking for true/false instead of a 0/1 value. I also do a lot of work in SQL Server. I prefix my stored procedures with 'sp' and my tables with 'tbl', not to mention all of my variables in the database respectively. I see everywhere that nobody really wants to use Hungarian notation, to the point where they avoid it. My question is, what is the benefit of not using Hungarian notation, and why does the majority of developers avoid it like the plague?

• How can I customize an icon on the dash/launcher?

  all. I have a question that has been bugging me recently.. Say I install Blender.. I am using the Bumblebee project thing, so in order to properly use it, I have to go to the terminal and type "optirun blender". If I just click on the icon on the dash, it will run without the proper parameter being passed. Is there a way I could customize the Blender launcher on the dash so it would always launch it with the optirun parameter? Thanks.

• /dev/sda2 contains a filesystem with error after partitioning

  I just wanted to create a separate home partition on my Ubuntu 12.10 system. I booted the liveDVD, resized the sda2 partition (28gb of data resized to 30gb based on MiB [originally on a 100gb partition]) and made a new ext4 partition for the home folder. The drive is an SSD drive. I had changed the settings (noatime etc.) for SSD succesfully a week ago. On reboot I get the following error: /dev/sda2 contains a filesystem with errors Inode 74669 has an invalid extent node (blk 6881289) fsd / [953] terminated with status 4 What would you suggest me to do? If I can avoid a clean install that would save me a lot of time (I had just done all the config). I was following this HOWTO, but I did not get to changing any of the files or configs other than those with gparted. I have a (two-week old) SSD Samsung drive which is functioning just fine (other specs see bottom of this question). Other specs: 64bit 12.10, i7, 8gb ram, nvidia.

• Collisions on complex map 2D

  I'm currently thinking about collision and map system that I want to use in my next game and I'm kind of puzzled. Maps are going to be somewhat complex with lots of irregularities and thus tiling is out of question. I thought about an editor where you'd draw rectangles on the map that would represent areas that are collidable with and then saving such "collision map" with only black/white gfx. Or maybe should I save exact rectangles data with their x/y/width/height into some text file and go from there? What would you recommend? Thanks.

• Stop Google Analytics from appending hostname?

  I've come across an Analytics profile that is appending the rest of a URL to the end of a page's path. For example when looking at the page that exists at http://example.com/page I would expect to see /page but instead it shows me /page/http://example.com/. The profile has no filters applied to it, and until July was reporting as expected (/page), in July the site in question switched hosts (and absolutely nothing else, so I'm not sure that's the problem). The analytics code on the site is the standard Google Async code with a domain set. All other profiles for the site show /page as expected. Any ideas as to how I can get the profile to function as expected?

• Gtk theme change doesn't apply to kde apps?

  I changed the systemwide ambiance theme a bit (specifically the scrollbar css), and this works fine in gtk apps, but in kde apps nothing has changed. They still have the vanilla ambiance look. I tried rebooting too. Btw I've disabled overlay scrollbars. I looked at this question: Why don't Qt4 apps in Lubuntu pick up the GTK theme? and tried setting the Gtk+ theme in qtconfig but that didn't help. The look remains the same. Changing the theme in qtconfig to another one, such as QtCurve, does have an effect though.

Everyone knows how Bill Gates created IBM DOS on one machine while simultaneously building MS-DOS on another machine (and we all know how that turned out). In order to be the first to come up with a new software product, where do you go looking for fresh ideas? Update 06/26/13: Reworded this question in an attempt to get it reopened. Bill Gates developed MS-DOS at the same time he was hired to develop IBM DOS. As a programming community, we would all gain by understanding how to think up great ideas for software. As programmer we tend to get stuck in our thinking... it's refreshing to hear how fellow programmers busted out and came up with their ideas.   Let's say I have an assemblyA that has a method which creates an instance of assemblyB and calls its MethodFoo(). Now assemblyB also creates an instance of assemblyC and calls MethodFoo(). So no matter if I start with assemblyB in the code flow or with assemlyA, at the end we are calling that MethodFoo of AssemblyC(). My question is when I am in the MethodFoo() how can I know who has called me? Has it been a call originally from assemblyA or was it from assemlyB? Is there any design pattern or a good OO way of solving this?
