• Time it would take me to learn c++ given my speed? [closed]

  I am a student in second year of engineering and my life is hard, nowadays. To make my future secure and at least get good jobs, I have started learning C++; I have learned J2SE, ASP.NET (little, basic C#), PHP (little), HTML, CSS, AJAX, Javascript, SQL, a little android development (I have built a benchmark app) in 4 months and have received 1 gold medal in CSS and 1 each in HTML, CSS, Java. I am able to make things in C#, Java and all other, so I can apply all this knowledge. I was able to do all this, because I loved learning and I hate to ask this question. How much time would it take me to learn C++, good-enough to get good jobs at Google, Microsoft? I am currently learning data structures, so that's excluded.

• I enabled and setup glBlendFunc, but my texture has a white outline. What am I doing wrong?

  You can see most of my source code in this question: Instead of the specified Texture, black circles on a green background are getting rendered. Why? Now I have the problem, that my texture has a white outline on its transparent parts. After googling and setting up glBlendFunc, the outline just got "softer". • To canvas, or not to canvas, when building browser-based games?

  Background: I have extensive development background, but the last time I coded a game was many years ago. My Javascript skills are quite limited, and I intend to improve them by building a simple game — Tetris, Pac-man, or something of that complexity level. Question: It seems to me that a fundamental choice I need to make is whether I should render on a <canvas> element or not. With a canvas, I have basic tools for rendering points, lines, and more complex things on top of that. Presumably there are, or will be, also various frameworks to help with this. Without a canvas, I could keep my objects in the DOM-tree, like a regular webpage, only quite complex, with many overlapping elements. Is one approach better than the other? Are they mutually exclusive? How do I know which to pick?

When internationalizing an app, what pattern(s) are useful for handling messages with possible pluralization? What about messages with multiple possible pluralization? For example: "N review(s):" One pattern would be reviews.title.singular="{0} review:" reviews.title.singular="{0} reviews:" And this may not support all languages. Or a more complicated case: "Found M question(s) with N comment(s)." This would be difficult to support in English?

I'm trying to connect with my university remote filestore, but I can't make it work.. Here is explained what to do on Windows or Mac, and here I found a guide about how to do it with ubuntu, but it's not working to me (at the end of all the steps, I can't access to the mounted folder). I can access to the storage through Konqueror (I'm using KDE), but I would like to access to it also without it. Any suggestion?

• Which API for cross platform mobile audio?

  This question focuses on the API's available on phones. I'd been planning to use OpenAL in my game for maximum portability. It runs great on Linux so I can quickly develop the Game and leverage it's superior debugging tools. However I've recently heard that Android doesn't support OpenAL well. Instead they've gone with a OpenSL ES library. What I'm looking for is a free Audio library that I can use with minimal custom code on iPhone, Android, and my Linux desktop. Does such an API exists? Some extra details: The game is written in C++ with custom minimal front ends. ObjC for iPhone, Java for Android, and SFML for Desktops. I'm using OpenGL ES for portability as iPhone doesn't support the more advanced OpenGL APIs.

• Hosting a magnet link site which could possibly infringe copyrighted material?

  I have for the last 3 months built a crawler, indexer and alot of other things for what started out to be a home project for indexing magnet links on the internet. As my project grew I have thought about releasing my collected data (which at the minute is on a public domain but with no access) to the public. Whatever the crawler sucks in goes in, and whatever the indexer decides to index gets indexed as it is a fully automated process. My question is as follows; Considering that most of the data that is collected from what I have built points to illegal copyrighted material (as most magnet links do) where would it be best to host such a site. I notice all of the already public torrent sites are hosted in India is this because there laws are less strict on copyright infringement? Have any of you hosted such a site, and if so what problems have you ran into? And as always any advice on being a webmaster for this type website?

• Lining things up while using columns

  I have a request that may not be possible. I'd like to line up the elements of a form so that the inputs all start at the same place: Name: [ ] Company: [ ] Some question with a long name: [ ] But my list is (somewhat) long and I would like to show them in multiple columns on screens that are wide enough. Ideally, I'd find a POSH method (table-free is semantically appropriate, I think) that works on a reasonable number of browsers. My current page uses a table. I tried CSS with columns: auto; -moz-column-count: auto; -moz-column-width: auto; -webkit-column-count: auto; -webkit-column-width: auto; but Firefox (at least) won't break a table across columns.

• How to login after modifying ~/.profile wrongly

  I did something very silly a few weeks ago. I wanted to add a path so that the OS could find some manually installed executable. Instead of typing 'PATH=xxx:$PATH;export PATH' at the end of the ~/.profile file where xxx is the directory in which the executable lies, I accidentally typed 'PATH=xxx;export PATH'. After I logged out I was unable to login anymore as I probably messed up the whole PATH variable and reinstalled the whole thing. My question is: is there a way of rectifying the situation if I happen to add the path wrongly (hopefully not!) in future?

• Application for taking pretty screenshots (like OS X does)

  I've been building a website for a guy who uses Mac OS X and occasionally he sends me screenshots of bugs. They come out looking like this: This is fairly typical of Mac screenshots. You get the window decorations, the shadow from the window and a white or transparent background (not the desktop wallpaper -- I've checked). Compare this to an Ubuntu window-shot (Alt+Print screen): It's impossible to keep a straight face and say the Ubuntu one anywhere near as elegant. My question is: Is there an application that can do this in Ubuntu? Edit: Follow up: Is there an application that can do this in one move? Shutter is pretty good but running the plugin for every screenshot is pretty tiresome as it doesn't seem to remember my preference (I want south-shadow and that requires selecting south, then clicking refresh, then save) and it's more clicks than I'd like. Is there a simple way of telling shutter I want south-shadow for all screenshots (except entire desktop and area-selection)?

  I am NOT doing test driven development and I write my test classes after the actual code is written. In my current project I have a test coverage of(Line coverage) %70 for 3000 lines of Java code.(Using JUnit, Mockito and Sonar for testing) But while I feel actually I am not covering and catching %70 of the problems that can occur. So my question is in theory is that possible to have a %100 Line coverage but in reality it is meaningless because of low quality of the test code and maybe a %40 well written test code is much better than a bad %100 coverage? or we can always say line coverage more or less gives the percentage of all covered issues?

• Generating Wrappers for REST APIs

  Would it be feasible to generate wrappers for REST APIs? An earlier question asked about machine readable descriptions of RESTful services addressed how we could write (and then read) API specifications in a standardized way which would lend itself well to generated wrappers. Could a first pass parser generate a decent wrapper that human intervention could fix up? Perhaps the first pass wouldn't be consistent, but would remove a lot of the grunt work and make it easy to flesh out the rest of the API and types. What would need to be considered? What's stopping people from doing this? Has it already been done and my google fu is weak for the day?

• Where to start for writing a simple java IDE?

  I would like to start working on my own custom IDE. The biggest reason I want to work on the IDE is to help me gain an even greater, more intimate understanding of java (and other languages I add into it.) I don't want to do anything super fancy or revolutionary, I'd be happy if I could create something as compact as the BlueJ IDE I used in high school and be content. I have a few question on the specifics of the task that I hope I can get cleared up before I start investing time in this: Is there anything I should be aware of when writing the parser?   Quick Background Since learning basic html 5 years ago, I've become completely obsessed with the technology, the logic, and the thrill of solving problems involved with building websites. I am still stuck at a thoroughly non-programming type job, but would really like to move into the field of web programming/design. I have no educational background in the field (was trained as a fine artist and tutor), but in the past few years have progressed fully self-taught (and self-motivated) from html to css to php, mysql, jquery, and am now building rich web applications. The Question How can I prove to a company that even though I have no education, I have a passion to learn whatever is thrown my way? ...That essentially I would come at every issue with not only knowledge, but with a passionate desire to solve it, whether that means tackling a new language or debugging code for hours at a time? p.s. • libstdc++-6.dll not found. [migrated]

  I have been working on a project(a game to be specific) and I feel that I should start over with different libraries. So when doing this I reinstalled Code::Blocks and setup my new libraries and includes. But as of now Im having a problem starting u[ my new project to test if all of the includes work. This problem is: libstdc++-6.dll was not found. At first i wondered if I could just find this file online, but its nowhere to be found(or at least the many places I have searched...) Soon after, I tried loading up my old project, and the same problem happened again(wierd... ._.) I was thinking its maybe my compiler, so I used my older compiler and it did the same thing! At this moment I held the problem off for tomorrow(which is today) So my question is: If anyone else had this problem, how would you solve it? Im using Code::Blocks with MinGW as the compiler on Windows Vista 32 bit.

• Putting Ubuntu Server on to a networked HDD

  Firstly, I know very little about servers and secondly the 1Tb HDD I have has network capabilities, but no software is installed on it, so when connected to the computer it is seen as a network connection, but not as a drive. Any advice on how to get started would be great. Up until now, I have been using it as a USB drive which worked well, but when this is sorted, I would like it to be connected directly to our BT HomeHub accessible through the WiFi for all the family to use as a film and back up repository. I would then be able to set up individual accounts for each family member to use and may be, if possible, make it accessible from outside locations. The First question then is: How can I install Ubuntu server on the 1Tb HDD attached directly to the computers network port but which doesn't show up in Nautilus? • Futures/Monads vs Events

  So, the question is quite simple: in an application framework, when performance impact can be ignored (10-20 events per second at max), what is more maintainable and flexible to use as a preferred medium for communication between modules - Events or Futures/Promices/Monads ? Its often being said, that Events (pub/sub, mediator) allow loose-coupling and thus - more maintainable app... My experience deny this: once you have more that 20+ events - debugging becomes hard, and so is refactoring - because it is very hard to see: who, when and why uses what. Promices (i'm coding in javascript) are much uglier and dumber, than Events. But: you can clearly see connections between function calls, so application logic becomes more straight-forward. What i'm afraid. though, is that Promices will bring more hard-coupling with them... p.s: the answer does not have to be based on JS, experience from other functional languages is much welcome.

• Do you use to third party companies to review your company's code?

  I am looking to get the following - Basic code review to make sure they follow the guidelines imposed. Security code analysis to make sure there are no loopholes. No performance bottlenecks by doing a load test etc. We have lot of code coming in from third parties and is becoming laborious to manage code reviews and hence looking to see if others employ such practices. I understand that it may be a concern for some and would raise the question "Well, who is going to make sure the agency is doing their job right?" But basically I am just looking for a third party who can hold all vendor code to the same standards.

• Refactoring While Programming

  When posed with a problem, particularly when it is complicated in nature, I try to take some time to think about the approach I am going to take to solve the problem. Despite this, what often happens is, as I am programming the solution, I start to think of details of the problem that I missed, and I adjust the code accordingly. What results is a mess of code that needs to be refactored. I want to "refactor as I go," but while it sounds easy enough to do, I have a really hard time doing it. When the detail that I missed is small, it is tempting to make a small update to my design, rather than erase what I've already written and write it the way it is supposed to be. It sounds like a question with an obvious answer, but are there any techniques to use to better "refactor as you go"? I know that this is a good principle, but I fail with it time and time again.

  Xamarin 3 was released last week with a great new addition: Xamarin.Forms . This triggered our attention because we've been using such a system for a couple of years now. We've developed it by ourselves and used it for a bunch of projects. We've been looking for a way to make this project open source but we didn't manage to convince the management. They believe we should not make it open source because we won't win anything with it and all that will happen is that the competition will be able to build apps quicker with our library. We believe open sourcing our library will make the world a better place and that it will make our library much more stable and complete.   Just simple question(s): Is it possible to recover one whole folder? It was with photos..and if no, so when recovering, will it recover also files from the folder? (I use Photorec, but if you know better one..). I tried to get back my pics and what has returned wasn't from folder. ? • Programmer's career path

  I've been working as a programmer for the last few years - different companies and freelancing, mostly developing internal-business web applications (well, that's the current model of development, it seems). Besides simple coding I was working on specs, designing applications, and all those around-like things. My question is, what's the career path I should be aiming for? Is it like working on code for the rest of my life? :) Or do programmers make a good manager-position people (I know, those require quite different set of skills) and I should try to improve myself to this direction? I know it's very subjective. Thing is, lately I find myself much more into the designing/working on specs part of the development project then the coding itself. How do you see it? Would you like to go from development to management? Would you like to work on a project with a manager that used to be a coder? Would you like to hire one? :)

• Paren-free PHP? [on hold]

  I stumbled upon the idea for paren-free ecmascript (https://brendaneich.com/2010/11/paren-free/), which is inspired by Go language. And it's simple, clean and cool - if you make braces required instead of recommended (and they are recommended everywhere anyway: http://www.php-fig.org/psr/psr-2/), then parenthesis are unneeded around control structure “heads”. It would work exactly the same in PHP. So, a piece of PHP code could look like this: if $someVar == 42 { doSomething(); } or: foreach $someArray as $key => $value { echo "$key: $value"; } It's a small, but nice step towards a nicer, cleaner syntax and removing unnecessary parts. The question is - would PHP community be willing to see the languange move in that direction? Would it be considered an improvement by majority, or are we too used to typing those parenthesis and unwilling to see any change in PHP syntax?
