• Nvidia RAID 1 Problem. Degraded drives...

  I had a RAID 1 on my system which has a Gigabyte GA 8N SLI motherboard with a Nvidia chipset.(Nvidia Raid IDE ROM BIOS 4.84) When the system was working probably there used to be an icon on the system try which showed my two RAID disks. Bu after my friend accidentally clicked on the "Remove drive safely" icon while trying to disconnect her USB, I noticed that the RAID system wasn't working. After a reboot there was suddenly a failure message during boot screen. When I enter the Nvidia RAID setup utility (F10) I can see that both drives are degraded and that won't change even if I get into them and press R for Rebuild. Other options are only Delete and Exit. When I boot to Windows (XP Pro 32 Bit) I can see both my disks with the same data on each of them but my RAID 1 is broken. It's a relief to see that at least my RAID 1 was active but it's annoying not being able to rebuild it. Is there a way where I can rebuild my RAID 1 without having to delete the array and build it again? Cause I don't want to backup 400 Gigs of data and then recopy it to my drives... • System randomly freezes yet mouse still moves, SSD out of reallocatable sectors, should I replace it?

  This problem has lasted for the past 48 hours. The first time it happened, a program I was running stopped responding, so I tried to end it from task manager. The processes at first were listed fine until hovered upon. Eventually, despite the mouse still being able to move, after a few persisting clicks the mouse finally stopped moving. The screen went blank shortly thereafter. The second time it occurred, items on the screen stopped responding - hovering over the taskbar or such wouldn't elicit a response. Sound would still play however. Eventually, the mouse became unresponsive and the system restarted itself. I suspect that it may be a problem of my SSD drive. After looking through some Google search results, I downloaded HDTunePro to determine if there's a problem with the drive. Results returned a problem of reallocated sector count. An error scan also revealed 48 bad sectors. Also, an attempt to backup the contents of the most important areas of the drive returned a few explorer "Error: cannot read source from disk" errors. Should I ditch the drive and use another drive or is there anything that can be done to repair the drive? • Getting a "CPU over temperature error", but temperatures seem to be normal

  I built a PC with the following parts: CPU: i5-2500 Motherboard: Asus P8H67-M EVO rev 3.0 RAM: G-Skill Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1333 Video: GTX 560-Ti 1GB I used a crappy (but functioning) old case and a 500W Powercooler supply. The rig also includes 3 HDs and a DVD-RW. Whenever I push the system mildly it resets right away (looks more like power off/power on) and gives me a "CPU over temperature error". However, BIOS always reports <65ºC for the CPU at the moment of the reset, same as Core Temp and RealTemp. This is RealTemp's log since launching BF3 until the reset (just over 1 minute, as you can see) Just to be sure I've checked the CPU cooler and re-applied the thermal paste twice, but nothing changed. I'm not overclocking at all. What am I missing here? Could it be that the old power supply is generating this error? Maybe the mobo isn't reporting temperatures correctly? I don't have a clue on how to troubleshoot this, help Thanks in advance!

• Problem with setting up RAID 5 on FreeNAS

  I've been running FreeNAS for a while now. Hardware is 1.8 GHz Celeron, RAM 1 GB. SATA card is Via - I am not sure about the model. It's 2 ports and I have 6 x 1.5 TB hard drives. All ran OK while running on 1.5 TB, no RAID. I'm now trying to create a RAID 5 with my 6 hard drives. Software RAID. Is it normal for it to take roughly up to 2 weeks just to build the RAID? Sorry, I'm very new to implementing RAID and googling doesn't tell much other than it takes a long time. Also the RAID building process seems to fail many times. Going to degraded. I suspect it's because 4 of my hard drives are connected to my motherboard and the other 2 are connected to my SATA card. What's your take? I'm considering 2 options now. Either get a 8 port SATA card and attach all the hard drives to it. Or get a RAID controller 8 portcard which is probably going to be more pricey. Also how do you access hardware RAID through FreeNAS? I like how FreeNAS emails you should your harddrive fails. Can this be done as well with hardware RAID?

• Windows 7 'Unidentified Network'

  So my internet was working last night before I went to bed and woke up to a computer that is showing unidentified network. I have tried multiple ways of fixing it. > route delete 0.0.0.0 > uninstalling drivers - restart - reinstall from downloaded drivers > ipconfig /release - /renew > static IP > speed & duplex from auto negotiation to 1.0gbps full duplex > and also changed my network address to no value to 1234567890ab (not in that order) nothing seems to work. I have Comcast internet and when I connect the computer to the modem it works perfectly. but when I connect it to my router again, Unidentified network. I know my router isn't faulty, because my macbook pro, server, NAS, iPhones, and iPads are still working. I have also tried moving the port on the router, still same problem. my router is a: Cisco Small Business RVS4000 motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3

• System With Two Network Adapters [closed]

  Hi, My system has a NIC (Marvell Yukon) built-into the motherboard, but I also have a D-Link (RealTek) card. I figure that using the D-Link and disabling the Marvell makes the most sense, though I'm wondering if maybe the built-in one has better throughput (not that my Internet connection is so fast). Also, I'm wondering about the merits of using both at the same time. My router has four ports and I have experimented with enabling and plugging both NICs into the router. I was able to connect to the Internet, but the pattern of usage seemed irregular (which adapter was chosen for the transfer and any given point). I also considered bridging the two, but am having difficulty in finding out what exactly creating network bridge does in the context of the Windows Network Connections window. I am familiar with the concept of connecting networks, so it seems to me that birding two connections on the same segment is pointless at best (and can cause problems like loops?) Does anyone have any tips on what to do if a system has more than one NIC and any clarification on the bridge option? Thanks a lot.

• Display errors using VMWare Player and Remote Desktop on Windows XP

  I've come up against a weird display issue that I can't seem to find any "fix" for. When I first boot up my computer, everything behaves normally. If I start to use VMWare Player and/or Remote Desktop, my desktop starts having some odd video issues. The frames for some windows aren't drawn at all, if I move windows around rapidly, the area under where the window used to be isn't cleared (still shows artifacts of the content of the window), etc. In some cases, the minimize / restore / maximize buttons aren't drawn (but are click-able if you can guess where they are). I've tried the usual stuff - current drivers all around, using a single monitor, etc.. none of it seems to have any bearing. If I try to disable hardware acceleration, it tends to crash the computer. As I said earlier, it's running Windows XP, dual monitors, an NVidia en8400GS video card, asus p7p55d motherboard. Not sure what other pertinent details are needed. I would appreciate any help or suggestions!

• Updating ASUS BIOS on Windows 7 64bit

  I've recently decided that I want to try and utilize my two graphics cards so that I can have a dual monitor setup. Unfortunately Windows only seems to notice my most recent graphics card installation - and so I've been told that I should look into my BIOS and try to enable two graphics cards. I could not find this setting anywhere in my M2N68-AM Plus v0210 BIOS. After some further research I figured that I should perhaps upgrade my BIOS, so I searched and managed to download the latest version (v1804) as a ROM file. However I am having difficulty figuring out how to install it. I've tried using the Asus EZFlash feature built into my BIOS, but when trying to load up a variety of different ROMs that are for my motherboard/BIOS I get the error: Boot block in file is not valid! I'm not totally sure what I should do to fix this, so I'm looking into other methods of upgrading my BIOS - however I can't really find any solutions that seem to work. Asus Update is for 32-bit only, AFUDOS doesn't appear to work on my Windows 7 64-bit system (I think it's supposed to run in DOS or something - but that just sounds confusing since I know nothing about DOS). Could anybody help me with this?

• Plug-in device to front USB computer *sometimes* restarts

  I've got a strange problem that very occasionally (maybe once a month) when I plug-in something to the front USB on my computer, the computer suddently restarts. This also happens when I touch the front USB ports sometimes. This has been going on for a few years and a lot of the components in my PC have changed. I thought it was my home wiring, but I moved last year and it still happened. I thought maybe it was the motherboard, but that was upgraded 9 months ago and it still happens. I thought it was my case, but I changed that recently and it still happens. I thought maybe it was my PSU, but I upgraded that yesterday and it still happens. I'm pretty sure this is an electro-static thing, but I thought that modern computers have protection against this sort of thing. Maybe I should move my case off the floor (carpet) and stop wearing songs all the time. Edit: Just to clarify this is a computer that I built. The components have been upgraded throughout the years and it's not much the same computer anymore. This doesn't happen very often, but it is annoying, because I don't know what the cause is. Anyone have any ideas?

  I recently purchased an Intel D2700 MUD motherboard and I cannot find drivers for the Win7 x64 integrated graphics (Intel GMA 3650 aka PowerVR sgs545). The accompanying CD contains Win7 x32 version only. When I run it I got an error: This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software. I tried to use online utility Intel Driver Update Utility Graphics. I used Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer without success. First, UAC prompt appear, and then endlessly spinning progress-bar with text "Analyzing computer...". The text in UAC prompt is: Program file name: System Requirements Lab Verified publisher: Husdawg, LLC I downloaded this utility (intel_srldetect_4.5.5.0) and started it from my hard disk. I got an error: A network error occured while attempting to read from the file: C:\Users\Loom\Downloads\SystemRequirementsLab_intel_4.5.5.0.msi Standard VGA driver works for this video card but without hardware acceleration: Hardware acceleration is either disabled or not supported by your video card driver, which could slow game performance. Make sure you have the latest video card driver installed and that hardware acceleration is turned on. Where I can get appropriate driver?

• Why is my computer randomly restarting? How can I fix it?

  I have a custom built desktop computer that I've been using since about a year ago. The main specs are: ASUS P8Z68-V LE Motherboard Intel Core i7 2600k Corsair Vengeance 16GB Ram ASUS ENGTX570 GPU Corsair TX650M PSU I was running an overclock of 4.4ghz for my cpu (I have a Hyper212 EVO) and 1600mhz for my RAM but have it currently turned off due to my issues. I am also currently running Windows 8 but this problem occured in Windows 7 too. Basically my issue is that seemingly randomly, with no pattern my PC will reset itself and ASUS Anti-Surge will alert me that something went wrong. This issue is not related to system stress. I can run it fine for an hour maxxed out on Prime95 then later I can be watching a mere YouTube video when it will randomly reset. This has been occurring probably for the last two weeks and it seems to be getting worse. I believe this might be related to the power supply but when I monitor it in the bios and in Windows it appears to be putting out the proper voltages. Also possibly related or not but my Nvidia drivers frequently temporarily fail and then warn me of some kind of kernel error? If I have to buy a new power supply that is what I'll do but I want to make damn sure that's the only issue at hand. Thank you everyone in advance, please help me diagnose the issue and tell me what I can do to fix it. If you need any additional info about my setup please ask me.

It is not available, even though I have enabled it in my bios, forced it in grub, and triple checked my kernel to include HPET in its compilation.   I've come across a problem after building my new PC and installing a clean Windows 7. I originally planed on a RAID 1 or 0 but after further research I decided against it. So I was left with two 1TB Western Digital Black SATA 6Gb/s hard drives. My plan now was to use my second hard drive as a backup (using Windows Backup or 3rd party software). I set both hard drives to AHCI in the BIOS and installed Windows 7. I went through the lengthy process of downloading and installing each driver manually (latest versions), using the motherboard disk for a list of what I need. After a few restarts and before installing any software, I took an image backup onto DVD and the second hard drive. First witnessed the problem during the first scheduled Windows backup. The progress bar froze at about 70% (doc backup done, image backup in progress). It stayed still for 2 hours until it blue screened. Next time the backup froze, I tried shutting down. It logged me out and got stuck at the last step ("Shutting down" and blue spinner) for an hour, until I hard shutdown. I later realised this hasn't got anything to do with the backup. I ended up blue screening on almost every shut down (same place). Turns out, it's because of the second hard drive spinning down or turning off. The computer will now shutdown properly, as long as I remember to read or write to the second drive before executing shutdown. I've now set "Turn off hard disk after: Never" - No problems, so far. Do I have dodgy hard drive(s) or should I investigate the POWER_STATE_DRIVER_FAILURE BSOD - can it be a driver issue? AHCI?

• Transfer of ownership of Windows 7

  I am thinking of purchasing a copy of Windows 7 via either ebay or GumTree. I am unsure as to how the product key works. A close friend of mine is warning me against buying it from ebay as he is suggesting that once it has been used, the operating system registers itself on microsoft servers using the serial number of the motherboard of the system where it has been installed. This means once installed on one machine you wont be able to install it on another machine. Now i am struggling to believe that an operating system can only be installed on one machine. Can someone please explain exactly how this works. I can see a lot of copies being sold on Ebay which are used. I used the 'Ask a question' option and the majority of the users are saying that i should be able to use it. If someone buys Windows 7 from the shop, installs it on his PC but then decides that he wants to sell it can he not sell it? Will the person buying it not be able to use it? Does the person selling it have to somehow unregister it first? What do i need to look out for if buying it from Ebay? Thanks

• Can I have a single solid state drive and a RAID array on the same machine? [closed]

  Hi- To summarize, i'm looking to use a single solid state drive as my primary drive, and two conventional sata drives in a RAID 1 configuration for data. I am trying to install 64-bit Windows 7 onto this configuration. Is this possible? Here are the details: I built a desktop that has been running 64-bit Vista on two 500Gb in a RAID 1 array for a few years. I just purchased an Intel X25-M 80Gb Sata Solid-State Drive, and was planning on using this a my primary drive, and keeping the RAID 1 array as my data drive. I added the SSD drive and in the RAID setup, configured it as a RAID 0 array of only one disk. Then, I tried to do a clean install of windows 7 64-bit, but got stuck in the "Missing driver for CD/DVD drive" black hole of selecting driver files and Windows telling me that i don't have the appropriate driver for my hardware. The missing hardware is NOT a CD/DVD drive, since i'm installing off of my only CD/DVD drive. Plus at one point i was able to point it at a driver for my raid controller, and then my hard drives magically showed up as browsable sources for finding drivers for some other unnamed device that setup couldn't recognize. After a few hours of trying drivers (this was a very slow process) i decided to reboot and look at the BIOS settings. I'm using an ASUS M2A-VM motherboard which has an ATI SB600 RAID controller on board. I switched the "On board SATA Type" setting from "SATA" to "AHCI" thinking that since AHCI is an Intel thing, this would help. Unfortunately, this abandoned my RAID configuration, and my previously mirrored drives are showing up as separate drives when i boot into my current windows installation. Am i trying to do the impossible here? Should i just buy a separate SATA/RAID PCI card and plug the SSD into that? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Computer freezes after watching Youtube videos

  I had Windows 7 installed all september. But I installed Windows XP Professional back because my computer couldn't handle the new OS. After first boot I tried to install newest flash player (from Adobe website), but it failed. I had my old setup on USB drive and it worked. I don't know is it important or not. I am watching Youtube videos in my free time (almost every hour). After few days the computer started to freeze when I open a page with the video or close the page with video, not while I watch a video. No BSODs. Nothing in Event viewer. I use Firefox only. When computer freezes the sound wont. If iTunes is playing a radio station or is it another video playing in background, the sound wont freeze. Last few days the mouse wont freeze. Its a strange symptom. If I click few times then the cursor will actually freeze. I just want to know where does this problem come from (hardware - graphics card, old motherboard or it's just some glitch in setups). If it's not graphics card then I will be happy. The graphics card is ATI Radeon HD 4650 - brand new. Catalyst 11.8 installed. Things I have tried: Installed newest flash player after a week (the setup didn't fail this time) Installed latest video drivers Deleting cookies Defragmenting hard drive Using TuneUp utilities for computer cleenup Installed latest Mozilla Firefox Cleaned the PC Changed CPU Fan speed almost to max (just to be sure) Things I haven't tried yet: Didn't try playing videos on other browsers What can I do now?

• Which RAM is faster (or, is Crucial's Memory Advisor giving non-optimal advice)?

  In general, if a PC's motherboard is only specified for RAM up to a given core speed x, will that PC be faster with: RAM of latency y capable of running at a maximum core speed >x or RAM of latency <y capable of running at a maximum core speed of exactly x ? I would have thought the latter, but Crucial's Memory Adviser tool advises the former. So, which of us is correct - me, or the machine? (Here is a concrete example: I wish to upgrade a Toshiba Satellite Pro L300-155 laptop from its current 1GB RAM to 2GB Crucial RAM. The laptop's specifications are given here. I see from those specifications that the laptop is designed for DDR2-667 Ram. Crucial sells two compatible 2GB kits, priced exactly the same as each other: DDR2-667, CL=5; DDR2-800, CL=6. It seems to me that of these two upgrade kits, the first kit would run slightly faster on the L300-155 than the second, because both will presumably be capped at DDR2-667 core speed (see laptop specs), but the second kit has more latency. However, Crucial's Memory Advisor tool recommends the second kit.)

• quad sli with gtx 690 not working

  I have two cards GTX 690 (dual core). I did the Sli successfully. Nvidia control panel acknowledges the two cards as quad Sli. However, the problem is that Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate is showing me the graph memory size as 4 GB while it is supposed to be 8 GB because of the Sli. Also the benchmark from all software is giving me a very low score compared to some other guy's benchmark on YouTube. It gives me a big headache. Does anyone know why this is happening? If so, how can I get Windows 7 to recognize all 8 GB of memory? Thanks for your help in advance. My computer specifications: (Processor: Intel Core i7-3930k @3.2GHz(12CPUs))--- (Memory: 65536 MB Ram 1866 MHz)-- (OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit)-- (OCZ 240GB as SSD PCIe drive for booting and storage disk)-- (DirextX version: DirectX 11)-- (VGA Card: 2 X EVGA GTX 690 Dual GPU. Each GPU is 2 GB, so total memory should be 8 GB.)-- (MotherBoard: ASUS Rampage IV Extreme)-- Others with lesser specifications get a 2500 score in heaven benchmark while I get 1501 as if it is one card.

• AA doesn't work due to monitor?

  I have a monitor (with TV tuner - Philips 221T1SB), native resolution of 1920x1080, but there is an Overscan in Catalyst. It says from left to right '10%' and '0%', if i set it (all the way to the left) on 10%, i get screen with black borders (you know what i mean), but if i set it to 0%, i get a filled monitor. It does make sense, but why the hell is there such an option? I never had any AA issues before, but now, with this monitor, here they go. I can't find any solution, i have only one lead = overscan, or pretty much anything with the CCC settings. Yes, i almost forgot. After a bit of trying to configure the monitor with remote, i found there is a PC channel option, few other channels, and then a HDMI option. I have monitor through HDMI, but why i get black screen when i select the PC channel? That might be another problem. I tried almost everything. Please guys, give me a hand. I don't want jaggies!   Ever since we had some crazy power surges last week my 64 bit Windows 7 PC has been acting strange. My USB network adapter disconnects from the wireless and can't detect the signal. I have to disable/reenable the adapter to detect it again. Also my wife has reported that the PC has rebooted a few times while I'm not sitting at it. Today I finally caught the reboot while I was using the PC. I got this blue screen of death. Stop Code 0x00000109: "Modification of system code or a critical data structure was detected." I followed the advice at the linked article and ran a memory test. I used memtest86 and its already found around 300,000 errors out of 8 gigs of ram. Now I'm worried -- what are the odds this is isolated to just my memory and not just a system wide problem? Isn't there a good chance that many other components are fried? More importantly, how can I test those other components? Are there tools similar to memtest I can use to test my motherboard/video card/power supply? If these are vender specific, is it typical for vendors to provide testing tools?

• Windows 7 not booting after failed SRT (SSD caching) install

  This is a fairly new computer, only about a month old. i7 2700k, z68 motherboard, with a 1.5tb WD black HD, and a 128gb crucial M4 ssd. I followed the instructions for setting up ssd caching, the SATA controller was set to RAID, I installed the intel software and enabled acceleration and it said everything went fine. But when I went to reboot, I received the lovely "Reboot and Select proper Boot device" error message. I checked the bios, and it was booting from the correct HD (I tried the only other option anyway just in case, it was the ~50 odd gb of unformatted space left on the SSD) AFter that I entered the raid until (ctrl-i at boot) and removed the acceleration and deleted the raid array (because it was being used as a cache this was non destructive) Still no boot. So I reinstalled win7 directly on the SSD, booted, and checked the HDD to make sure it hadn't been wiped. It hadn't, all the files were still there, including all the windows stuff. I backed up my data to an external drive just in case, but I'd really like to get this install booting again. I trawled the webs a bit, and have tried entering recovery mode and using the bootrec.exe and bootsect.exe to fix it, but to be honest I'm not sure what I'm doing with those. My question is basically: How do I make my harddrive bootable again?

• Software for RAID Failure Alerts?

  I have two 256 GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD disks in a RAID 1 array. I would like to receive a notification if one of the disks in the array fails. Can anybody recommend an application I can install on the server to fire an email if such an event occurs? Here are some additional specs: Supermicro X9SCM-IIF motherboard utilising the hardware RAID controller. OS = Windows 2012 Standard Also is it possible to simulate a disk failure by pulling it out of the bay? SSDs appear to fail close together when in a mirrored config so I'd like to know ASAP if one goes down so I can swap them out with minimum delay. UPDATE 26th June 2013 ------------------------ None of the software that ships with the Supermicro X9SCM-* motherboards offer support for RAID monitoring. As has been pointed out here, these boards are built on an Intel chipset for RAID and so I installed Intel Rapid Storage Technology that supports automated email notifications on RAID failure http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imsm/sb/cs-020784.htm One small issue, the software only allows you to send email notifications without SMTP authentication. • USB 3.0 ports backwards compatibility problems with 2.0 devices?

  I see some info on the net that suggest that I should be able to get my USB 2.0 devices to work in 3.0 ports. I only have two 2.0 ports on my new computer, and six 3.0 ports. I have installed drives. There's two different drivers, I guess some of the ports are supported by the intel board and some supported by some other chipset on the motherboard. I however have yet to get any of the 3.0 ports to work, and my brother had had the same issue with his devices not working in 3.0 ports on his computer. So I am beginning to wonder if the backwards compatibility isn't reliable for some reason. Maybe manufacturers opting not to implement 2.0 support on the 3.0 ports. I understand that physically the wiring is there, but that is only half the story. Beyond my brother's and my own computers (different motherboards/everything), I have yet to see a 2.0 device work in a 3.0 port. Is there any reason for this apparent device incompatibility? I.e. looking for responses that would indicate what areas to explore for issues or if there is any known cases of manufacturers deviating from spec in hardware or drivers. I am aware it's "supposed" to work :) Update: Does this have any relation to "USB Legacy Support" options in the BIOS? There several options combinations of options with "USB Legacy Support" and "USB 3.0 Legacy Support" and the description for these is a bit confusing, sounds like a bad translation.
