• Login crash loop

  After about the second/third batch of updates on a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04, I end up getting stuck in an infinite login loop: I enter my password, screen goes black and shows me the end of the initialisation messages (including things like CUPS initialising), and then the greeter reappears. Kicker is, as I'm using gnome-shell, I just decided to uninstall LightDM, ubuntu-desktop and unity-greeter, using GDM as my manager, and the problem still happens in exactly the same manner. I'm lost even as to where to start looking - Xorg logs, LightDM logs (before I removed it), syslog and dmesg logs have held no unusual information at all. I have a TeX assignment due next week, and reinstalling Ubuntu every time I want to work on it is not going to work (nor is using TeX on Windows ;). Anything else I should try?

• Moving from one DNS provider to another

  I had registered with a particular DNS provider X and I have been unhappy with their services and now when the time for renewal came, I did not renew and I let it expire. I am hoping that once it is expired from this provider, I would be able to sign up for the same domain name from an alternative provider which I have tested and I am satisfied. What kind of precautions should I take? The domain name is not a critical one, it is of a NGO and we prefer to own it again without any change in the name. The information given by the expiry notice says Domains can be renewed between 90 days before and 14 days after the expiry date. If domains are not renewed they will be removed from the account and set for deletion. Should I wait for time till gets deleted at their end so that I can sign up for the same from another provider?

  I’m trying to make TraceTune (and eventually ClearTrace) work the way I do.  My typical query tuning session goes like this: Run a trace and upload to TraceTune/ClearTrace Tune the slowest queries Goto 1 I might do this two or three times in one day and then not come back to it again for weeks or even months.  This is especially true for those clients that I only visit a few times per month.  In many cases I’ll look at a query, decide I can’t do much with it and move on.  I needed a way to capture that information. TraceTune now lets you enter a comment for a query.  It can be as simple or as complex as you like.  The comment will be shown inline with the execution history of that query. This should let you walk back through your history with a query and decide whether you should spend more time tuning it.

• Is there a sequence to read through the Android Developer Site for a user new to Android?

  I keep seeing that I don't need to buy an android development book, that I should just read the Android Developer Site site because it has everything I need to know. I see it more as drinking from a fire hose. But I'm one of those people who likes to be walked thru the basics. I like to build up my knowledge, rather than being dropped into reference documentation. I also like to make sure I have see all/most of the topics covered. I'd hate to develop the wrong thing because I don't know about Fragments, Content Providers, or whatever. So, since it's a great resource, better than any book (we don't need no stinkin books), how do I traverse the site to get the information provide in the same way as a book would lay it out?

• Brightness not working; HP Pavilion Dv6; ATI Radeon HD6770M

  I am new to Ubuntu, but so far I am loving it. I was always unable to change my brightness since I installed Ubuntu, but I figured that installing the latest ATI driver for my graphics card would work. I did, but I still can't change the brightness. The slider goes up and down, but the brightness stays the same (on full). I have switchable graphics, an ATI Radeon HD 6770M, and an Intel integrated GPU. Since I am new to Linux, I am not familiar with terminal, so you will have to spell everything out for me, including if you need more information and how to get it. Thanks.

• Help with Kodak esp 3250 printer driver on Lubuntu 12.1 SOLVED!

  First my system: pentium 4 -don't remember the speed-, 1g ram, dual boot to separate physical drives, Fdos and Lubuntu 12.1 second my lan: I have four computers operating for the same printer. 1. Intel quad core i5, 4g ram, running Windoze 7 64 bit, printer connected and shared from here. Kodak ESP 3250 2. Gateway 17" laptop running Windoze 7 32bit 3. Asus tablet (small laptop) running Lumbutu 12.1 4. My dual boot system running Fdos and Lubuntu 12.1 The problem: I downloaded c2esp_25c-1_i386.deb, tried to install it using DEBI Package Installer, it loads the files, looks for cups driver and ends with an error: "Dependancy is not satisfiable: libcupsdriver1 (=1.4.0)" What do I do now? Is there some place that I can get the correct cups driver? further information: The Asus tablet was running Ubuntu 12.1 (very slowly and with a few crashes) and could print from the lan printer with no problems.   Is there any direct way do contact a „real” person, an YouTube employer? Someone created an account for the company I work for (previous employer). She entered some password and e-mail. The provided e-mail was valid, but since last login (more than two years), we changed our domain, and this e-mail is probably not valid anymore (and we even don't know it), co we can't use option to reset password. I have used all the options in YouTube help center, and no one worked. Also we can't contact this previous employer to get any data she entered in the registration form. The only data I know is the username. All the movies present the products of our company, there are links to our site in movie descriptions, so there should be no problem to prove that the account is ours. This is an urgent case, becouse the movies contain outdated information.

• Books or guides regarding secure key storage and database encryption

  I have an idea for a SaaS product I want to create, however, this product will store extremely sensitive data that needs to be encrypted at rest. The trouble is not so much the encryption, but the problem of securely storing the keys so that in the event the server was somehow compromised, the keys couldn't just be recovered and used to decrypt the database. Are there any decent books to guides regarding database encryption, and in particular secure key storage? This seems to be a less than straightforward topic and something that is difficult to get right. I'm seeing multiple ways to attack such a system, but unable to come up with one that is secure enough to store highly confidential information.

• Set a specific screen resolution with xrandr

  So I installed LUbuntu 11.04 on my VirtualBox. I couldn't find the 1366x768 resolution so I installed Guest Additions but it wasn't there. So I used this code to set the correct resolution: gtf 1366 768 60 xrandr --newmode "1368x768_60.00" 85.86 1368 1440 1584 1800 768 769 772 795 $ xrandr --addmode VBOX0 1368x768_60.00 xrandr --output VBOX0 --mode 1368x768_60.00 The problem is that I can't find a way to save this information for the next reboot. I tried on .xinitrc and nothing happens. Then I tried on .bashrc but it's not working, I need to start a console before this commands are executed.

• Cant install wine1.5 13.04

  So I tried to install wine 1.5 a few times, I got 1.4 installed, and 1.6 installed oddly enough, I completely removed and purged all wine and still nothing. I installed ia32-lib and still nothing, tried installing from synaptic, ubuntu software center, and apt-get method. I get this error from apt-get in the terminal Reading package lists... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming.   I received a software update for Ubuntu 12.10 while using Zorin OS6 wireless. I accepted the update and installed 12.10. Please tell me the step by step, using layman's terms, on how to get Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox to connect to the Internet? I am receiving DNS server error with both browsers. I can connect to my router wired or wireless. I posted and received initial information but was not sure exactly what some of the terms were and or what to do next etc. I am not necessarily familiar with some technical terms, or do I need to install additional plug-ins? I do not know what proxy or DCHP means or what do with these terms please, please help. I am not a programmer, nor do I work in IT. Again please help.

• Verifying Office 2010 SP1 Installation

  So you downloaded and installed SP1, but now you want to verify that SP1 actually installed! Looking at Outlook's Help Screen under Help->About, it isn't readily apparent that SP1 is installed. Like me, you probably expected to see 14.1.something. Perhaps 14.0.something SP1, right? If you click on that "Additional Version and Copyright Information", another window will pop up and show you a bit more useful info (if you don't have the version numbers committed to memory) That window *does* give us that comforting SP1, and now we can determine that if you have Office 14.1.6023.1000 (and beyond) you are indeed runnning Office 2010 SP1!

• Mouse Not Working on Boot

  I have seen several topics regarding this situation, but none of them truly address my issue (that, or there are no answers that solve the issue.) Upon booting into Ubuntu 12.04.1 x64 my mouse wired USB mouse (Steelseries Sensei if that makes any difference) either doesn't work or stops working immediately after the grub menu, prior to the login screen appearing. The cursor is present, but obviously not reactive to any mouse movement; even the LED on my mouse turns off (or fails to turn on.) The only way I've found to activate the mouse is to restart the computer, and even then it's 50/50 at best as to whether or not the mouse will be powered. This issue has never happened in Windows 7, so the mouse is operating properly on the hardware and connection side. Forgive my ignorance of Ubuntu (and Linux in general), but I was hopeful that someone would have some suggestions, or could at least instruct me on what to check in order to provide any further information for diagnoses.

  My installation of Ubuntu 12.10 over Ubuntu 11.10 seems to hang on "saving installed packages". How long should I wait before knowing for sure that something is wrong? I stopped it once and tried re-installing but am getting the same results. I'm installing from a USB stick. I'm connected to the internet using a wired connection but I'm reading here to connect to a wi-fi network while installing. Could this possibly be the issue? I can't install using wi-fi at the moment as my router was fried in a brownout yesterday. I've ordered another router online so as soon as it gets in, I'll try again. Any suggestions are appreciated! Please let me know if you need more information. It's a 32-bit installation and I have 1 GB of memory. Thanks!

• Ogre3D : seeking advices about game files management

  I'm working on a new game, and its related level editor, based on Ogre3D. I was thinking about how i could manage the game files, knowing that Ogre use .mesh files for models, .material for materials/texture information etc... . At first i thought about a common .zip folder decompressed at runtime (the same way Torchlight and Ogre samples do). But this way the game assets become a monolithic archive, loading takes time, and could be difficult to eventually patch them. So, let's say i have a game object named "Cube" i want to load in my program. Going for modularity, what if i create a compressed file (using zlib compression routines) named Cube.extname, containing its sub-files Cube.mesh, Cube.material and so on ? Are there any alternatives or should i stick with compressed objects? PS: Just to clear things, the answer is unrelated to my program code, at the moment i'm using "resources.cfg" pointing to the OgreSDK media directory.

  I am registering as a Developer to sell paid applications on the Google Play store and have run into a slight issue: After I paid, I clicked on "Setup merchant details" link. I filled out the business address section, but in the "Public contact" section, Google says this: How can your customers get in touch with you? This information will be made available to your customers when they make a purchase. I work from home. I do not want customers knowing my home address, nor do I want it displayed anywhere online or even accessible by anyone. Should I just enter NA in each of the following fields? Surely Google understands that we have a right to keep such things private? How can I get around this while not getting my account suspended or risk not being approved?
