  Hello, I am a student in college, and I notice that a lot of companies look for people who have experience with Javascript. Does this include Javascript's libraries, like JQuery? Or, are they looking for Javascript people only? It probably depends on the company, but what is the general advice for a student wanting to do some front end work? Is Javascript more powerful than JQuery? I know Jquery is a library and simplifies many tasks, but is there some reason why you would use Javascript over Jquery?

• Can Win32 message loops survive being ported to native linux?

  I would like to port a large Win32 DLL to native linux in C++. I don't think I can use Wine for a DLL like mine, because users of the DLL would then also have to be in Wine, and then they would all whine... As a Windows C++ programmer, I don't (yet) have any familiarity with the GUI front-end services in linux, but if it logically runs on anything like win32 message loops, fonts, bitmaps, invalidation regions, getmessage( ) calls and so forth, it should be a fairly straight forward remapping of my existing code. So what am I looking at here, a remap or a rewrite? The path for such things must be well worn by now.

  I'm interested in the philosophical and architectural justification (or lack thereof) in using Java to develop in today's modern world (exclude mobile/embedded platforms of course). Why would one choose to develop (or not develop) a back-end in Java? Why would one choose to develop (or not develop) a front-end UI in Java? Why do large enterprises lean towards developing in Java rather than adopt more modern (and standardized) technologies? *disclaimer: I'm not a fan of Java in the enterprise, I'm simply curious what drives enterprises to continue the trend.

• Application use on website

  Is there a good way to run a C# application on clientside in lieu of JavaScript? I have done some front end work with JavaScript and backend C# for web developing at an old job, but I am interested in hosting a website myself soon. I have a C# application I would like to be open source, but before people care to download I'd like them to be able to use it. At its basic level it's a simple text editor, but there's much more to it in the nitty gritty. I could write it in JavaScript, but it would require me to keep documentation and up to date changes on JavaScript and C# in that case. I was thinking of creating an AJAX panel and somehow loading my winform application into a frame, but I don't know how or what words to google because I've never done it before except AJAX.

• "sudo apt -get install foo-" causes removing foo package and everything depends on it

  While working in command prompt, I accidentally typed following command: sudo apt-get install python3- and ubuntu started removing python3 and everything depends on it (including firefox and much more). Fortunately I closed that terminal immediately and reverted everything by checking dpkg log file, but I was wondering why an install command should act like remove? Is it a bug? Consider the situation that you are looking for a package name (pressing Tab twice) and going through possibilities by pressing Enter key and those Enter keys remain in the keyboard buffer and.... youhaaaa... apt-get is removing the entire installation in front of your eyes.

• Breaking up a large PHP object used to abstract the database. Best practices?

  Two years ago it was thought a single object with functions such as $database->get_user_from_id($ID) would be a good idea. The functions return objects (not arrays), and the front-end code never worries about the database. This was great, until we started growing the database. There's now 30+ tables, and around 150 functions in the database object. It's getting impractical and unmanageable and I'm going to be breaking it up. What is a good solution to this problem? The project is large, so there's a limit to the extent I can change things. My current plan is to extend the current object for each table, then have the database object contain these. So, the above example would turn into (assume "user" is a table) $database->user->get_user_from_id($ID). Instead of one large file, we would have a file for every table.

• The new Google Analytics - what new useful features have you found?

  If you don't know already a new version of Google Analytics has just come out. On first initial views it doesn't seem like much of an improvement on the previous version. There's lot's linking to Google's social stats but I'm yet to see the value of that. Also it doesn't seem to make the best use of the important data, it's tending to push referral sites, keywords to the back and bring the less important data to the front. Is that a sign of things to come??? One feature I did find interesting was the visitors flow as it shows the visitors path through your site. What new features have you found useful/interesting?

• What did I do wrong when buying my domain through Google Apps?

  Several times in the past I've bought a domain through Google Apps, and every year Google automatically renews the domain for $10. Somehow when I did this today, I ended up additionally being signed up for an annual Google Apps for Business plan at $12/license/yr. I don't need this; I'm only one user. I'd like to cancel this $12/yr Google Apps plan without cancelling the automatical $10/yr domain renewal. However, there is no "cancel" or "downgrade" link, apparently (according to the help docs) because I have an annual pre-paid account. If I choose not to auto-renew my annual account, it also declines auto-renewal of my domain. How can I make this domain just like my others -- auto-renewed at $10/yr, with a free Google Apps account in front of it?

• Is it best to try to work at a company where your software directly makes the company money?

  I was told once that the best place to work as a developer is a company where the software you write is what makes the company money, whether it be software production or software services like consulting. This is opposed to a company where the software you write is just to support some other part of the business that makes the money, like manufacturing or finance. I know there are always exceptions, but in general, are employees treated better if they are on the front lines of profit generation, as opposed to being just another cost center? cost center (n.) - A cost center is part of an organization that does not produce direct profit and adds to the cost of running a company. Examples of cost centers include research and development departments, marketing departments, help desks and customer service/contact centers.

  Many projects don't think about localization until the game is done. Then localization is done as a hack, and it's obvious that it was added on later. Some specific areas of concern: Text strings (obviously) Audio clips such as music and/or narratives Text rendered on textures (e.g. a label on a crate) Text rendered in frames in pre-rendered movies Fonts/Character sets for different languages Etc.   I implemented the minimum translation vector from codezealot's tutorial on SAT (Separating Axis Theorem) but I'm having an issue I can't quite figure out. Here's the example I have: As you can see in top and bottom left images regardless of the side the of the green car which red car is penetrating the MTV for the red car still remains as a negative number also here is the same example when the front of the red car is facing the opposite direction the number will always be positive. When the red car is past the half way through the green car it should switch polarity. I thought I'd compensated for this in my code, but apparently not either that or it's a bug I can find.   There are a lot of companies that provide domain whois but I've heard of a lot of people who had bad experiences where the domain was bought soon after the whois search and the price was increased dramatically. Where can I gain access to a domain whois where I don't have to worry about that happening? Update: Apparently, the official name for this practice is called Domain Front Running and some sites go as far as to create explicit policies stating that they don't do it. This is where a domain registrar or an intermediary (like a domain lookup site) mines the searches for possibly attractive domains and then either sells the data to a third-party, or goes ahead and registers the name themselves ahead of you. In one case a registrar took advantage of what's known as the "grace period" and registered every single domain users looked up through them and held on to them for 5 days before releasing them back into the pool at no cost to themselves.
