• Dynamic Post-build event in Visual Studio

  I am building a video server application that has multiple projects in Visual Studio. One project, the video server project, needs to call a shell script to generate documentation. This works fine when you build the video server project, because the script is simply cd "$(SolutionDir)" start documentationgenerator However, there is also an SDK project that, when built, also builds the video server project. However, when it does this, it does not know where the shell script is, since it tries to use the SDK Project's Solution Directory. SDK Project Video Server Project shell script So the question is: how do I make the SDK Project find the Video Server Project? I checked the MSBuild properties and there are no properties that seem to deal with 'nested' projects.

• Should you apply a language filter to a randomly generated string?

  A while back I created a licensing system for my companies new product, as well as all products after this one. As with a lot of licensing systems mine generates codes: 25 character product and registration codes, as well as 16 character module unlocking codes. My question is, since some parts of these generated codes are random should I apply a language filter to it to avoid any embarrassing language being given to the end users? I chose to as it was not difficult at all. But has anyone else ever came across something like this? Any viewpoints as to if it is worth the effort?

• Unit testing multiple conditions in an IF statement

  I have a chunk of code that looks something like this: function bool PassesBusinessRules() { bool meetsBusinessRules = false; if (PassesBusinessRule1 && PassesBusinessRule2 && PassesBusinessRule3) { meetsBusinessRules= true; } return meetsBusinessRules; } I believe there should be four unit tests for this particular function. Three to test each of the conditions in the if statement and ensure it returns false. And another test that makes sure the function returns true. Question: Should there actually be ten unit tests instead? Nine that checks each of the possible failure paths. IE: False False False False False True False True False And so on for each possible combination. I think that is overkill, but some of the other members on my team do not. The way I look at it is if BusinessRule1 fails then it should always return false, it doesn't matter if it was checked first or last.

• Scripted Motion Paths (?) (XNA)

  Ok, so the title isn't the greatest because this is a lot more general. Say I want to have the player be able to hit A and have their ship model roll to the right, and shift to the right of the screen, while the camera stays centered. Would I do that through programming (ie. set waypoints for the model and keep the camera focus still) or do it through animation ( so the ship model actually rolls and moves right, and just play those frames)(I actually don't know how to do this kind of 3D animation yet, haven't looked into it. • rsync verify a file already exists in dest folder so it will skip the copy on the 1st sync

  I have been looking at different tutorials about rsync about some specific situation I have. I have a home server with all my pics, this server is my backup, my PC is the one that receives the new pics and until now i had been manually copying and pasting new photos from the PC to the server. I was trying to setup rsync to do this automatically and in principle, it does without problem. Now the issue; when I fire up rsync it start copying all the files, even the ones were already in the destination (this is because it is the 1st sync). so my question is: Is it possible for rsync to verify that a file is the same (name/size/bin) so it will skip the copy on the 1st sync?

• Is there a version control system that can show changes to a specific method or function?

  Sometimes it would be nice to be able to say something like: (git|svn|hg|etc) diff Foo.c:main (git|svn|hg|etc) log log Foo.c:main to see the changes made to a specific function within a source file since the last commit, or the complete history of changes. My question is two-fold: Does something exist that does this? Would such a tool be practical? It would have to do some simple parsing of the code at each revision in order to compare different versions of the function; would the overhead be too much for it to be efficient?

• Is it a good idea for exams to be done on a computer?

  In some colleges students are let to use an IDE and Internet and in mine you have to write down your solution in paper. As far as I know, it's pretty much impossible to make a correct non-trivial program on the first try. I'd be fine with no using computers if my teachers assessed my approach instead my code -literally-... that's not the case unfortunately. Which ones are more usual, 'written' or 'coded' exams? • How to run just one application over ethernet while others on wifi

  I normally connect my laptop via wifi. However, I would like to use synergy to share my workplace desktop machine with my laptop. But the problem is that my desktop machine doesn't have wireless support. So, I have no other options except using ethernet to connect them. My first question is - Is it possible to use ethernet for synergy and keep using wifi for all other application. If the answer is yes, can somebody please guide me how to achieve this. Thanks,

• Multiple ( V- / I- ) Buffers, is it sane?

  Currently I am developing an RTS game using XNA ( / ANX.Framework ). There is one thing bothers me. I am not sure in what way or how to organise Buffers. Should I use a new Vertexbuffer for any object ( e.g. a Char, a Table, an model ) or is it better to use ONE HUGE/ BIG Buffer to store any geometry in? I am still new to 3D Programming though I finished yet couple games using DirectX 9. Well, I hope this question qin't a duplicate and I appreciate any answer leading me into the right direction.

• Installing Ubuntu before or after upgrading from Vista to Win 7?

  I just got a new SSD hard drive for my thinkpad laptop. I just installed Vista with the factory CDs. On my old OS, my main OS was Ubuntu but I do want to keep Windows on a separate partition as a dual booth system. I definitely want to upgrade to Win 7 though and I will get it in a few days. My question is: should I install Ubuntu now and then upgrade to Win 7 in a few days? or is that going to mess up with the grub (or something else)? If that is the case, then I'd rather wait to install Ubuntu until after I upgrade to Vista. P.S. I know that probably any kind of mess done by the Win upgrade could be fixed, but I just want to avoid wasting time.

• How to implement custom texture formats in Android?

  What I know: Android can load PNG, BMP, WEBP,... via BitmapFactory. What I want to achive: Load my own 2D file format (e.g. 1-bit texture with a 1-bit alpha channel) and output a RGBA8888 texture. Question: Is there any interface to achieve this?(or any other way) The resulting image is used as a texture for a 3D model. Why would you do that? Saving phone memory and download bandwidth while expanding the texture at runtime to RAM seems reasonable for very simple textures.

• wayfinder, paginator, or breadcrumb?

  My question is fairly simple. I've heard one or two people call it a "wayfinder" and I personally call it "breadcrumb", then again "paginator" can also fit the bill. Bottom line is I can't seem to find what I need because I am not coming up with the right term. What I want is the following: I have a site with a multiple-pages form. I want my users to see the steps through the form. I searched for all three terms and nothing I can use has shown. I could build one from scratch but I am interested in what is out there. • How do you balance between "do it right" and "do it ASAP" in your daily work?

  I find myself pondering this question times and times again. I want to do things the right way, to write a clean, understandable, correct code that is easy to maintain, but what I really do pretty often is writing a patch upon patch just because there is no time, clients are waiting, a bug should be fixed overnight, the company is losing money on this problem, a manager is pressing hard etc. etc. I know perfectly well that in a long shot I am wasting much more time on these patches, but as this time is spread over months of work, nobody cares. Also, as one of my managers used to say, we don't know if there will be this long shot if we will not fix it now. I am sure I am not the only one entrapped in this endless real/ideal choices. So how you, fellow programmers, are coping with this?

• See how one goal leads to another (i.e., how often downloading the demo leads to purchasing)

  I have two goals set up for my site in Google Analytics: one to download the demo of my software, and the other to buy the full version. I'm having trouble getting statistics on how often the download leads to a purchase. This seems like something the multi-channel funnel is perfect for (as in this question)---I expect that it takes multiple visits for the demo download to convert into an order. However, I can't seem to narrow down the multi-channel funnel data into only those that have one goal followed by another. If it matters, I'm tracking the ordering action as a page view (i.e., someone views the "Thanks for ordering" page) and the demo download as an action (which fires when someone clicks the "download" button).   I have encountered two ways of doing it: void foo(int from, int to); /* 'from' inclusive, 'to' exclusive */ void foo(int startIndex, int rangelength); Has one style historically been preferred over the other? If so, was it just a matter of convention or was it due to some deeper underlying reason? I'm currently programming in Java and noticed that the Arrays class uses the former style. The exclusivity of the to argument felt somewhat unintuitive to me, which led me to ask this question.

• When to Use workflow engines?

  I'm totally new to this concept from design perspective. I've worked in past on some of the workflow engines as programmer but never had a clarity on why we chose the work-flow engines in first place. And as programmer I know that there are at least 100 ways to do anything when you are writing code but only few of the ways are the best! I still don't understand which use cases are best solved by workflow engines (or rather their concept) than designing a good DI enabled application. I'm looking for any general characteristics of domain-neutral use cases, where work-flow engines are one of the the best options. So my question is: What are general characteristics of a requirement which can be taken as a signal for opting for a good workflow engine and coding around it? Cheers!

• Classless tables possible with Datamapper?

  I have an Item class with the following attributes: itemId,name,weight,volume,price,required_skills,required_items. Since the last two attributes are going to be multivalued, I removed them and create new schemes like: itemID,required_skill (itemID is foreign key, itemID and required_skill is primary key.) Now, I'm confused how to create/use this new table. Here are the options that came to my mind: 1) The relationship between Items and Required_skills is one-to-many, so I may create a RequiredSkill class, which belongs_to Item, which in turn has n RequiredSkills. Then I can do Item.get(1).requiredskills. This sounds most logical to me. 2) Since required_skills may well be thought of as constants (since they resemble rules), I may put them into a hash or gdbm database or another sql table and query from there, which I don't prefer. My question is: is there sth like a modelless table in datamapper, where datamapper is responsible from the creation and integrity of the table and allows me to query it in datamapper way, but does not require a class, like I may do it in sql?

• Does facebook store multiple password hashes for each user?

  I noticed that Facebook allows multiple variants of my own password : My password as it is. My password with first letter capitalized. My password with all letters capitalized. It is commonly known that passwords are stored as hashes. So my question is, does facebook store multiple hashes for each user? Since the hash of each variant should be completely different... Or am I missing something, here? And there may be more combinations, besides the one I observed as well. This is obviously done to provide a better user experience & they probably have a statistical explanation of people repeating these mistakes. But I could not help but wonder, is it worth to increase so many lookups (in their database) just to help the user type a wrong password? On top of this, they warn about the caps lock (even though they don't seem to care) :

• Split Texture2D Across Line

  Background I'm using a texture as a damage map represented by an array of floats for displaying damage effects on a space ship in a process. An upside of this is being able to 'slice' ships in half, using an input damage map with a line down the middle, as shown in the diagram below. Question However, I'm encountering problems separating this split ship into two different entities. I would like to be able to split the image down the 'damage line', in a process similar to this: I don't have much idea where to start detecting the red line above. Any advice would be welcome.

• large tmpfs /run partition - must it be so big?

  I am running Ubuntu 11.10 desktop on a couple of 8G RAM Wintel boxes. Both have been created automatically by the default installer with a 1.6GB tmpfs /run partition, where I suspect this amount of RAM could be more usefully used elsewhere in the system. I suspect that the installer takes 20% as the default, which is probably OK for boxes with lots less RAM, but seems overkill for an 8GB system. My question is - can I change its size, if so, how, and what are the risks in doing so? The /run partition does not appear in the /etc/fstab file so it must be set up elsewhere.

• Issues with upgrade to ubuntu 14.04

  First, I should say that I am a total beginner. When answering, please do not take for granted that I understand even the most basic step. Now for my question: Yesterday, I was given the option to update to ubuntu 14.04. I clicked yes, and the system took about 2.5 hours to accomplish this task. Now, whenever I log into my user account, I get an error message and then I am asked to authenticate my user account. When I try to enter the password, my computer freezes. Please help, what can I do to fix this?
