I'm making a game in Java, and I need a good file format to store the player's saved data.
Any suggestions?
Feel free to give examples in code if you want.
In Java, which is faster:
Cloning an Object, then passing it to multiple listeners assuming the cloned object contains nothing more complicated than nested arrays, primitives and Strings
Using Streams to pass data through from one object to another?
I'm fairly new to programming and from learning I have seen different ways of formatting code, comments, etc; and have been recommended on different techniques.
I mostly program in C#, C++, and Java so I want to know what is the the best way to layout code so that if other people where to go through it, they would be impressed by how simple and easy to understand it is.
I would like to know the same thing for commenting as well.
Is there any free Java library for extracting text from PDF, that is compatible with Google Application Engine?
I've read about PDFJet, but it can't read PDF, can it?
Is there perhaps other way how to extract text from PDF? I tried http://www.pdfdownload.org/, unfortunately they don't handle non-English characters correctly.
For a while I have been struggling to integrate scala with java methods that might return null. I came up with the following utility which helps a lot:
// produce an Option, nulls become None
object Maybe {
def apply[T](t:T) = if (t==null) None else Some(t)
}
Maybe(javaClass.getResultCouldBeNull()).map( result => doSomeWork(result) )
I have a few questions about this solution:
Is there a better or more standard pattern to use?
Am I duplicating something that already exists?
Does this functionality have hidden gotchas?

I want to make an Application that uses RxTx version 2.2pre2 to work with Serial Ports. What are the Licence restrictions, since it is an "LGPL v 2.1 + Linking Over Controlled Interface" licenced library if I don't use the Sun's javax.comm.* interface, but the RxTx's own gnu.io.* when importing into Java Files?
Kryo is a very new and interesting Java serialization library, and one of the fastest in the thrift-protobuf benchmark. If you've used Kryo, has it already reached enough maturity to try it out in production code?
what's are the uses of the host param with java applets?
can it be tricked to use a different server than the originating server?
I didn't find a clear complete explanation of the host param.
I am working on parsing plain text and converting it to key-value pairs.
For example, plain text:
some_uninteresting_thing
key1 valueA, valueB, valueC
key2 valueD
key3 valueE valueF
key4 valueG(valueH, valueI)
key5 some_uninteresting_thing valueJ some_uninteresting_thing
key6 some_uninteresting_thing
(key6 shouldn't be mapped because has no appropriate values) As you can see plain text is lenient. What java library can handle this? If no such library exist, any suggestions on algorithm to do this.

Is there an easy way to convert between color models in Java (RGB, HSV and Lab).
Assuming RGB color model:
How do I calculate black body spectrum color palette? I want to use it for a heatmap chart.
How about single-wavelength spectrum?
Edit: I found that the ColorSpace class can be used for conversions between RGB/CIE and many other color models.
I want to learn a simple language so I can code simple things maybe eventually a game but I don't know where to start. I can code simple things using apple script but you can't do that much with that and it only works on macs. I have a mac and a dell so something that I could code and run on both would be nice. Also all my school offers is java so if you have any ideas on how to learn the language that would be appreciated. Thanks
Can anybody provide examples or links on how to establish a JDBC connection pool?
From searching google I see many different ways of doing this and it is rather confusing.
Ultimately I need the code to return a java.sql.Connection object, but I am having trouble getting started..any suggestions welcome.
For this Java code:
String var;
clazz.doSomething(var);
Why does the compiler report this error:
Variable 'var' might not have been initialized
I thought all variables or references were initialized to null. Why do you need to do:
String var = null;
??
In a jboss service I need to mock some inner class (not EJB) with JMockit. Just for tests I've created inner class ToBeMocked and another one Mock. While deploying to jboss I get error NoClassDefFoundError in line:
Mockit.setUpMock(ToBeMocked.class, new Mock());
with message:
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: mockit/Mockit
jmockit.jar is added to the classpath in jboss_service.xml.
Any ideas?
I am currently accepting the parameters login and password in my servlet, but logs are storing this info when using wget (as long as it is GET method, and apache is in the middle)
Instead of this I want to enhance my servlet's authentication accepting:
wget --http-user=login --http-password=password http://myhost/myServlet
How can I read, in my servlet, the server side, the login and the password user is sending, in java code?
I have downloaded and installed the j2me polish successfully and i have tried to create the project but there is a reference problem showing that the specified folder does not contain the java platform but it is successfully working with normal project

Yesterday I asked this question: Is this possible to make as an option dialog?
and I learned it could be made with JDialog. I'm using Netbeans GUI editor and made a button that will call my custom JDialog I designed in the GUI editor. The JDialog is called jDialog1. How do I call the jDialog1 with the button?
private void jButton1ActionPerformed(java.awt.event.ActionEvent evt) {
// TODO add your handling code here:
}
I want to ask the user for input in console. He'll be writing down two numbers separated by a single space.
In Java is there something like the C# Split() method I can use?
Thank you!
why do i get this exception?
Map myHash = null
myHash = (HashMap)Collections.synchronizedMap(new HashMap());
If i try to use this hashmap, i get java.lang.ClassCastException
that's how the session factory should be gotten:
protected SessionFactory getSessionFactory() {
try {
return (SessionFactory) new InitialContext()
.lookup("SessionFactory");
} catch (Exception e) {
}
}
Please provide a simple solution for Tomcat6 to be able to get SessionFactory
thru simple jndi lookup in Java code.
What should be written in what file on the side of Tomcat ?
