• Ubuntu 14.04 compiz thumbnails preview flicker

  Ubuntu 14.04.1 x64 (upgraded from 12.04) with Unity desktop Dell Latitude with NVIDIA GF119M (NVS 4200M) - Optimus is DISABLED Using NVIDIA legacy binary driver 304.117 When I set the CCSM option to allow thumbnail previews, the thumbnail 'flickers' for about 1 second before the actual thumbnail image is displayed. I don't think I had this enabled under 12.04 so not sure if it's version-specific. Should I be using a different driver (there are newer ones - Ubu shows NVIDIA binary driver 331.38 and the non-proprietary nouveau, plus NVIDIA has newer ones at the site)? TIA!

  I have a software product. it will probably run on VMs that have no network connection at all. I want the user to pay for each VM the user runs. I thought to ask the user for some kind of hardware ID and provide him with serial that is unique for his machine. But user can just copy the VM image and than have two machines running? So I thought of having a security dongle. But how can I prevent user from running two VM's on the same machine both connected to the same dongle? This should be only basic defense so that actual hacking will be required to breach the license and not only spinning one more VM.

  this is my sql table structure create table cottonpurchase ( slipNo int null, purchasedate datetime, farmercode int , farmername varchar (100), villagename varchar (100), basicprice int null, premium int null, totalamountpaid int null, weight int null, totalamountbasic int null, totalamountpremium int null, Yeildestimates int null ) I want to fill in the null values in my sql with actual values and not leave them null but I want to do that from my winforms app form! But if I do that it just adds a new record when what I want is for it to update the record which has, for example, farmercode = 2, farmername = blaah, and so on. I also want to enter this in the same records as in farmercode = 2 and the corresponding corresponding basic price = ... , everytime i do it it ends up making a new record and not in the existing one.

  I must write a multiplayer pong game for the school. Where are thousand of rooms and where two players can go in to a room and play together and collect points. I programmed the Pong game using Java (LibGDX). How can I do the Network part. I searched the web. And I came across Kryonet. Is there something better? What should I google. On the Internet there are a lot of those questions. And no good answers. I hope that this most questions can be answered. • nvidia-package in 12.10 somehow not same like in 12.04 resp. X-lib not complete?

  Not knowing if this has to do with new kernel-update automatic done by ubuntu 12.10 ? it seems that kernel 3.2 in 12.04 has not these problems with nvidia-drivers ? I tried to install the actual google-earth as deb-package with dpkg -i it seems to be no problem, but when I type command: google-earth in terminal, there comes up the report among else: Xlib: extension "NV-GLX" missing on display ":0". Xlib is installed completely and nvidia-driver is de-installed (then reboot) then re-installed again. the report of google-earth stays the same: Xlib: extension "NV-GLX" missing on display ":0". ubuntu 12.04 was working quite good with google-earth. however: bumblebee seems to be taken out of program ? ( or needs to be re-edited ? ) Don't hurry too quick with solution, I can wait !

  I am building myself a new website, out of privacy and security concerns I am contemplating trying to make it https only. It will be mobile-friendly using media queries but I am concerned--especially for mobile users--about the increased bandwidth. How much will doing so increase my bandwidth or slow load times? For pages where I'm not transferring sensitive information, should I leave external links (to a jQuery library, or a web font for instance) in http? Simply put, I have read articles saying the entire web would be more secure if everything was SSL but my actual knowledge of implementation is limited to payment gateways and log-in pages and such. I apologize for the open-ended nature of the question but anything, even just simple answers to the specific questions is welcomed.

• Set modified date = created date or null on record creation?

  I've been following the convention of adding created and modified columns to most of my database tables. I also have been leaving the modified column as null on record creation and only setting a value on actual modification. The other alternative is to set the modified date to be equal to created date on record creation. I've been doing it the former way but I recent ran into one con which is seriously making me think of switching. I needed to set a database cache dependency to find out if any existing data has been changed or new data added. Instead of being able to do the following: SELECT MAX(modified) FROM customer I have to do this: SELECT GREATEST(MAX(created), MAX(modified)) FROM customer The negative being that it's a more complicated query and slower. Another thing is in file systems I believe they usually use the second convention of setting modified date = created date on creation. What are the pros and cons of the different methods? That is, what are the issues to consider?

• Will Google harm my ad's rating if my display URL in adwords does not exist?

  I have a service in a very big city, and to make my ads stand out, I display the name of the neighborhood in the display URL, although the actual URL is always the same page with my services for any neighborhood. Will google decrease my rating for this? In a different note, you can also express your ideas about if it's sensible to do this or not, ie, the client might feel I'm deceiving them. Although this will be subjective, unless there is some scientific study. Thank you!

  What is the best way to allow for dynamic fields/database columns? For example, let's say we have a payroll system that allows a user to create unique salary structures for each employee. How could/should one handle this scenario? I thought of using a "salary" table that hold the salary component fields and joining these columns to a "salary_values" table that hold the actual values. • Cocos2D Command-Line Application

  Is it possible to create a terminal application which uses cocos2d? I've tried to make one using cocos2d 2.x, but it requires a MacGLView to be initialized. I need it so that I could program a terminal application that generates a screenshot given a TMX file and an optional preferred width or height parameter (for resizing). Then I can automate the generation of map previews for my game, instead of manually taking screenshots. It's not practical to load the actual TMX and resize it inside the game (what I'm currently doing), because each TMX file has 7 layers, my tile sheet is huge, and I have lots of levels.

• How to work around the home directory changing to /root when using sudo?

  Hello everybody! With Natty coming out soon, I've been at work updating my deployment and self-config script to make my desktop on 11.04 run and look the way I want it to. One bummer is that dbus seems to have changed and does not permit, in the same manner Lucid and Maverick did, the authentication of the current user by terminal call using grep and cat. Ideally, to run the script, I would sudo -s and then launch it as # chmod +x install && ./install Instead of returning my user name.. it now returns root and applies changes to the root profile and aborts whenever paths do not correspond. • Fresh start outside Google's crapbox [on hold]

  I might have been experimenting with my website too much and Google first cut the flow of visitors considerably and now I didn't get one for 4 days already. It's a joke that they've done this, because I've put a lot of work into it, but that's a topic for another day. My question is about further avoiding it. I want to take the partly improved design from that website onto a new one and get a new domain name. The question is: in that case, do I have to change the hosting option (it has my old website name in the address), or is changing the domain enough for Google to treat it as something new from a "fresh user". In other words, does Google get through the domain address and log into the actual hosting address? I'd hate to waste another few months of hard work, so I prefer to take every possible precaution but not paying for another hosting would make things easier on the wallet.

  I am writing a SOAP based ASP.NET Web Service having a number of methods to deal with Client objects. e.g: int AddClient(Client c) = returns Client ID when successful List GetClients() Client GetClientInfo(int clientId) In the above methods, the return value/object for each method corresponds to the "all good" scenario i.e. A client Id will be returned if AddClient was successful or a List< of Client objects will be returned by GetClients. But what if an error occurs, how do I convey the error message to the caller? I was thinking of having a Response class: Response { StatusCode, StatusMessage, Details } where Details will hold the actual response but in that case the caller will have to cast the response every time. What are your views on the above? Is there a better solution? ---------- UPDATED ----------- Is there something new in WCF for the above? What difference will it make If I change the ASP.NET Web Service to a WCF Service?

• background: why not sync folders outside home with ubuntu-one?

  It took me a while to find out that with ubuntu-one I can sync only folders in my home-folder. On all other folders the ubuntu-one - option is available in preferences, but the actual actions are greyed out. the ubuntu-faq is quite clear on that: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOne/FAQ/CanISyncAFolderOutsideMyHomeFolder But I actually wonder why and if this is going to change and if there is a trick around it (an other one than setting my home to / ;) ) I personally dont have any important data in my home-folder other than the program-configs. If you occasionally edit files as root (I never do, I always use pfexec, wink wink), then you may have noticed that the vim (Vi Improved) editor that normally does filename completion via the <Tab> key now gives you something like: :e /etc/mo^I when you try to open up /etc/motd with a little less typing So, there are at least three solutions to this: Use <Ctrl>-E instead of <Tab> Use the "-N" flag when you start Vim :set wildchar=<Tab> (Enter those 5 characters, not an actual Tab) The reason for this? It seems that when you are root, Vim sets it's "compatible" flag, which makes it behave more like its ancestor vi. In turn this makes Vim set 'wildchar' to <Ctrl>-E.   I have been working in the enterprise Java field, mostly for financial institutions, for about seven years. Beyond core Java, what are "parts" of Java I should know by now? Should as in it will be useful either to nail the interview, or in an actual job. For example, I have never used JSP beyond "hello, world", but I don't suppose that it's something I need to go learn. But I have got core Spring pretty well done. I've read up on GC but that was a while back and need to re-visit it. I'm looking for one suggestion per post please.

  How can one edit unity bar default apps within a livecd? In other words if you boot ubuntu 12.04 livecd you will see in the unity bar, firefox, libreoffice, Ubuntu software center, etc. Well I need to customize a 12.04 livecd so that upon boot you will see my own selected apps ie: chromium, ubuntu-tweak, etc. Please dont link me to remastersys or myunity or ubuntu-tweak or ccsm. No graphical applications to be used. The iso is being built via chroot meaning i need the actual file(s) location: /usr/share/unity-2d.....something along those lines.

  I am developing a tool for simulating systems like the Gray-Scott model (That is systems where spatial distribution depends on time). The actual model is loaded from a DLL or shared object and the simulation is performed by a Simulation object. There are at least two situations when the simulation needs to be destroyed: The user loads a new model The user changes the size of the domain To make sure nothing goes wrong, the current Model, Simulation, and rendering Thread are all managed by an ApplicationState object. But the two cases above are initiated from two different UI objects. Is it then ok to distribute a reference to the ApplicationState object to all panels that need to access at least one method on the ApplicationState object? Another solution would be to use aggregation so that the panel from which the user chooses model knows the simulation parameter panel. Also, the ApplicationState class seems somewhat clumsy, so I would like to have something else

  So I'm writing a web service architecture which includes FunctionProvider classes which do the actual processing of requests, and a main Endpoint class which receives and delegates requests to the proper FunctionProvider. I don't know exactly the FunctionProviders available at runtime, so I need to be able to 'register' (if that's the right word) them with my main Endpoint class, and query them to see if they match an incoming request. public class MyFunc implements FunctionProvider{ static { MyEndpoint.register(MyFunc); } public Boolean matchesRequest(Request req){...} public void processRequest(Request req){...} } public class MyEndpoint{ private static ArrayList<FunctionProvider> functions = new ArrayList<FunctionProvider>(); public void register(Class clz){ functions.add(clz); } public void doPost(Request request){ //find the FunctionProvider in functions //matching the request } } I've really not done much reflective Java like this (and the above is likely wrong, but hopefully demonstrates my intentions). • How to find 2D grid cells swept by a moving circle?

  I'm making a game based on a 2D grid, with some cells passable and some not. Dynamic objects can move continuously, independent of the grid, but need to collide with impassable cells. I wrote an algorithm to trace a ray against the grid, that gives me all cells that ray intersects. However, actual object are not point-sized; I'm currently representing them as circles. But I can't figure out an effective algorithm to trace a moving circle. Here's a picture of what I need: The numbers show in what order the circle collides with grid cells. Does anybody know the algorithm to find these collisions? Preferably in C#. Update The circle can be bigger than a single grid cell.

• Is there an apt command to download a deb file from the repositories to the current directory?

  I am often interested in the installation triggers (postinst, postrm) or certain parts of packages (like /usr/share and /etc). Currently, I am running the next command to retrieve the source code: apt-get source [package-name] The downside is, this file is often much bigger than the binary package and does not reflect the installation tree. Right now, I am downloading the packages through http://packages.ubuntu.com/: Search for [package-name] Select the package Click on amd64/i386 for download Download the actual file This takes too long for me and as someone who really likes the shell, I would like to do something like the next (imaginary) command: apt-get get-deb-file [package-name] I could not find something like this in the apt-get manual page. The most close I found was the --download-only switch, but this puts the package in /var/cache/apt/archives (which requires root permissions) and not in the current directory.

• Ubuntu 13.10 Installer freezes on partition recognition on Alienware M17x

  I'm trying to install Ubuntu 13.10 on an Alienware M17x, after bypassing the graphical problems with "nomodeset" (annoying!), I'm facing a rather different problem: I click on "Install Ubuntu", the guided installation progress reach the point where the partition, mount point etc. needs to be selected and...nothing. In the partition selection menu it sees only dev/sda, but in the window where the actual way the disk is partitioned should appear nothing shows, it's blank. I've tried to click on "change..." to try to force it to read something, but the installer simply quits. The button "change partition table" etcetera are greyed out (well, obviously, since no partition table has been read). What's that? The Alienware has Windows 7 and legacy BIOS (so no UEFI here). Anyone has an idea? Thanks for your time and help!

• Where can I find crash course in Java eclipse in Vancouver?

  I am not satisfied with what I learned in Java 101 in University. I feel like, lot of time is spent on trying to figure out how to write something in Java properly. I feel like, my lack of knowledge of Java and eclipse is slowing me down. I would like to pay for a detailed and intensive course in Java & Eclipse. I can read a book and read tutorials, but it seems harder to discipline myself. Where can I find such crash courses outside of university courses? I find lot of CS courses just show tip of the iceberg and not too much focused on actual application. I want to learn the latest industry skills and etc. I live in BC, Canada. I am thinking of BCIT, but not sure what they offer.

• Very slow startup after update to 12.04

  My hardware: Dell Latitude D600 laptop Processor: Intel Pentium (r) 1.8 GHz Memory 1.2 GiB Graphics R200 (RV250 4C66) x86/MMX/SSE2 TCL DRI2 Disk: 37.7 gb I did an update from 11.?? using the automatic system update that pops up when you switch/log on. Ever since then when I switch on the machine it takes approximately one hour to get to the login screen. Sometimes the actual login will take time too, but sometimes within a couple of minutes I am logged in. Once I am logged in I find I can work normally, the response is not swift, but is neither too slow that I cannot work. I was wondering if there was anything I could do to speed things up. I deliberately did not do a clean install from disk, because I did not want to loose settings on the machine.

• How to enable home directory encryption for a particular user?

  I prefer to have a dedicated "administrator" user for technical purposes and that was one I've set up during installation. I've also refused to encrypt the home folder of the user. Now, as I've added a user account for my actual work usage I want my (but not the "administrator") home folder to be encrypted. How to turn this on? If it is not possible then how to enable encryption for all users home directories on a system already installed? I've found questions and answers about how to disable it but am not sure how to enable it.
