• Vanilla forum personal journal tool

  I am developing a forum for a research project, i am using Vanilla forum (though i am not tied to this yet). Another feature of this site will be a personal journal/diary/blog. Only the user and administrators will have access to the journal. The journal does not need any advanced features. Does anybody have any suggestions on software/script that could easily be integrated with Vanilla forum for this purpose? My first thought was using Wordpress but it is a bit to complex to adminstrate as the site is meant to be simple. And i dont really see how it can be intregrated easily the way i want it.

• Test Driven Development Code Order

  I am developing my first project using test driven development. I am using Zend Framework and PHPUnit. Currently my project is at 100% code coverage but I am not sure I understand in what order I am supposed to write my code. Am I supposed to write my test FIRST with what my objects are expected to do or write my objects and then test them? Ive been working on completing a controller/model and then writing at test for it but I am not sure this is what TDD is about? Any advice? For example, I wrote my Auth plugin and my Auth controller and tested that they work properly in my browser, and then I sat down to write the tests for them, which proved that there were some logical errors in the code that did work in the browser.

• Stop myself from over-complicating applications

  Recently I worked on a fairly large project involving C# and MVVM. This application had around 160 projects in the solutions each seprarated into their own layers. As I have been working on this application for almost a year, building it from scratch as part of a team, I am now coming off that project and onto smaller more trivial projects. As I was beginning to develop a small in-house tool I found myself trying to mimic the larger applications structure and layering but in the end I just had a simple application with several DLLs which I know I wouldn't have done if I had not worked on that larger application before. I am just wondering if there are any techniques I can utilise to stop myself from turning a "code-behind" style trivial application into a full blown MVVM application? Or should I continue developing as I am and try to keep the unnecessary fluff out of the project?

• Is age a factor when looking for internships? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Is it ever too old to learn how to become a programmer? I'm 30 years old going back to school for a 2nd degree in Computer Science. I will be transferring to my local state university this fall and would like to know if my age will be a factor when applying for internships. I have already read a few threads about age and careers: Is it too late to start your career as a programmer at the age of 30? Does it matter that you started developing at 26? While it is reassuring to know that people are getting entry-level programming jobs at 30+, what about internships? Should I even bother with bigger companies like Google, Microsoft, or Apple? I know we have laws against age-discrimination but lets not pretend we live in a perfect world where everyone follows the rules.

• Operations on multiple overlapping layers not working

  Hi I am developing a game in android just like Farmville by Zinga. In that game we have to place elements in the diamond shaped field so the don't overlap each other. Now I did coding for placing the field inside the farm field but I cannot stop the problem of overlapping of the farm field. • Can we ask idea of software?

• looking for advice regarding a free shopping cart solution [on hold]

  I am building a very small e-commerce site, and I need a free and simple to use/deploy/integrate shopping cart that I can add into my website in order to be able to sell a FEW items. I want the shopping cart to be an add-on in my website, nothing fancy.Ideally when a person clicks on the "Add to cart" button, they will be redirected to the shopping cart, which will then handle different types of payment methods, and everything else you would expect from a fully working shopping cart. I am currently developing my website using the following tools/frameworks: SQL Server 2008 R2 Visual Studio 2010 (ASP.NET 4.5 - C#) HTML5,CSS3, and JS. • Do you think that in the future it'll be possible to develop games on OS X by using Python and the latest library "Sprite kit" made by Apple? [on hold]

  I don't understand a lot about game engines and modules for Python, even though I'm aware of the existance of PyGame and Pyglets, so please don't bash me too hard if I'll wrote something wrong in this question :-) When I upgraded my Mac to the latest version of OS X, I noticed for the first time that Apple is providing a library named Sprite kit for developing games on both iOS and OS X. It looks to me fairly complete, and the fact is managed by a big company gives me the impression of being well-supported for the time being; in summary, it looks... cool. Actually in order to take advantage of "Sprite kit" you need to code in Obj-C. Since I don't know Obj-C but only a little bit of Python, do you think that there's a chance that sooner or later someone will make a wrapper for Python ? Thank you very much and best regards

• Shouldn't all source code be plain text? [on hold]

  Some developing environment/languages save the source code you write in a binary/propietary format that you cannot see or edit with a generic text editor. I'm not talking about compiled code, but the source code. An example could be PowerBuilder and Oracle Forms. It's ok you use proprietary technology if you want, but not being able to open the source code you wrote, in a simple editor, if only to read it, seems like a very strict form of vendor lock-in. Also this prevents you from using text-based version controls that can show you the difference between two versions in a line-by-line base. If the code is plain text, you don't need a license in order to just open it, see it and learn from it. Should it be a golden rule to avoid vendor lock-in to avoid technologies that save your source code to anything but plain text files ?

• How difficult it is to develope Apps for Android and iOS? [on hold]

  I'm an experienced web developer in PHP, HTML, Javascript, MySQL, CSS and I'm running communities where people can register to be able to login and do some stuff. Now more and more people are requestion an App, I told them that I have no time and experience to develope Apps with many functions for such complex communities I am running, but then the users told me what would be enough for them and this sounds already simpler to me: An app to install on Android / iOS just to be able to login (+ autologin), so they appear always online in the community when they have internet connection. Then only 1 function like a counter of new activities regarding their user account (new messages, new replies, etc..), and if they click on the app then a browser window will open to read the info at the main website. So, what you think, it will be a big thing to develope such an app for the members? Is there a big diffrence between developing for Android and iOS? How to test the App if you don't have an Android or iOS phone in example?

  I'm developing a turn-based 2D RPG game. Everything's going fine except the lack of characters' sprites such as moving, attacking animation, etc.... By characters I mean both human-like and monster-like creatures. Is there a website providing sprites for free? Or a program (free or paid, whichever is fine) which will let me create sprites from scratch and automatically generate the images? • Character equipment combinations

  I'm developing a 2d isometric game (typical Tolkien RPG) and wondering how to handle character/equipment combinations. So for example, the player wears leather boots with chain-mail and a wooden shield and a sword - but then picks up plate-armour instead of chain-mail. I'm using Blender3D to create objects, environments and characters in 3D, then a script runs to render all 3D meshes into 2D orthographic tile maps. So I can use this script to create all the combinations of character equipment for me, but there would be an explosion in terms of the combinations required.

• BOX2D Kinematic Platform with parallax layer

  I am using a kinematic body for my moving platform on x-axis, so I set the linear velocity to b2vec2(5,0). When the player jump on the platform, it works like it is suppose to. But the thing is that my platform is on the obstacle layer and I am moving it with the parallax layer. So if I setTransform the kinematic platform to follow the obstacle layer than it's physics will not work and the player will slip-off the platform. I'm developing for iOS and using cocos2d api. Anyway around this?

• Dynamically rewrite URLs upon the user's selection - is it possible?

  In my PHP based web application, there's a form that generates a URL according to the user's selection. The form has 7 different fields, each one of them affects the final URL, none of them is mandatory. The final URL can be: /field1/user_setting_of_field1/field3/user_setting_of_field3/field6/user_setting_of_field6/ or just: /field4/user_setting_of_field4 these URLs should be rewritten to- /results.php?field1=user_setting_of_field1&field3=user_setting_of_field3&field6=user_setting_of_field6 and: /results.php?field4=user_setting_of_field4 Is it possible to create a single rewrite rule that will cover these variations? I'd hate to create different rewrite rule for every possible scenario, it'll take forever... I'm currently developing the app on a Windows machine with IIS 7.5, but will eventually deploy it to an Apache server. Is it possible in both? I currently need to solve it for the IIS environment, and later on for Apache.

• Programmer's career path

  I've been working as a programmer for the last few years - different companies and freelancing, mostly developing internal-business web applications (well, that's the current model of development, it seems). Besides simple coding I was working on specs, designing applications, and all those around-like things. My question is, what's the career path I should be aiming for? Is it like working on code for the rest of my life? :) Or do programmers make a good manager-position people (I know, those require quite different set of skills) and I should try to improve myself to this direction? I know it's very subjective. Thing is, lately I find myself much more into the designing/working on specs part of the development project then the coding itself. How do you see it? Would you like to go from development to management? Would you like to work on a project with a manager that used to be a coder? Would you like to hire one? :)

• Cross-Platform Automated Mobile Application UI Testing

  My dissertation is about developing a tool for testing mobile applications from the GUI. Primary device is Android, but it should support Blackberry or iOs etc. I found some frameworks using Google, e.g MonkeyTalk. I am not so sure, but what I want to develop might be a mini MonkeyTalk, with minimal functionality, focused on the GUI of the application(s) to be tested. My questions: What framework(s)? I am good with Java. Can I use the xUnit family for this, and how? What should I be reading/studying? Any suggestions, links for tutorials, documentations, howtos, etc., would be very helpful. • How could your company's learning/development department best serve you?

  I'll preface my question with a disclaimer - I am not an engineer, I'm just someone who works with them full-time, in a learning and development capacity. Given that, one of the comments I get regularly from the engineers I'm tasked with developing is that they feel that they're having solutions (both technical and non-technical) for development "pushed" at them vs. anyone from my field consulting with them to determine what they really need. So my question is - if you could give your company a list of the top 3-5 things they could do - in a classroom, or elsewhere - to develop meaningful skills that would help you be a better engineer, a better employee, and one more likely to STAY with the company for the long haul, what would make the cut and why? • svn-based versioning tool, problem with network timeout

  My dev team was committed a versioning tool based on Subversion to run on Windows (our svn client is sliksvn). We're developing with Delphi XE2, should that matter. We're asked to implement a "check for updates availability" feature, which has to work as follows: Connect to the SVN repo via svn+ssh protocol; See if there are changes to receive and list them; Let the user decide if he wants to receive changes or not. We don't have a great knowledge on svn, so we thought to implement that thing client side by a certain number of CreateProcess calls that wrap directly proper svn commands. Anyways what we perceived is that if network problems should arise, such like a connection drop, svn client hangs forever waiting for the operation to close instead of failing for timeout. We know that CreateProcess can be given a timeout argument, but it wouldn't be correct to use it, as we can't know from outside how long will be the svn operation taking to complete. Is there any way to avoid that deadlock?

• Where can work-at-home coders go to find other coders to real-time chat with and get support like they were on a large team at an established company?

  I used to work in an office surrounded by a large team of programmers where we all used the same languages and had different expertises. Now that I am on my own forming a startup at home, my productivity is suffering because I miss having people I can talk to for specific help, inspiration and reality checks when working on a coding problem. I don't have access to business incubators or shared (co-working) office spaces for startups so I need to chat with people virtually. Where can I go for real-time chat with other programmers and developers (currently I'm looking for people developing for the web, javascript and python) for live debugging and problem-solving of the tasks I am working on? And what other resources can I use to get fellow programmer support?
