• Jquery: How do I fire/play a sound file when I want?

  I have some code that basically inflates a 'balloon' through 15 or so stages and then makes it pop at the 16th stage. (yes, images are changed). What I'm wondering now is if it's possible to use Jquery to play a sound file whenever I reach that 16th stage (or when whatever var reaches whatever value) - in other words...when I want. I've found several jquery sound plugins but they all create this player which I must then click for it to play the file. I can name following techniques that I find especially useful: Non-blocking notifications (floating dialogs like in Firefox3 or Vista's pop-up messages in tray area) Absence of "Save" button MS OneNote as an example. IM clients can save conversation history automatically Integrated search Search not only through help files but rather make UI elements searchable. Vista made a good step toward such GUI. Scout addin Microsoft Office was a really great idea. Context oriented UI (Ribbon bar in MS Office 2007) Do you implement something like listed techniques in your software? Edit: As Ryan P mentioned, one of the best way to create usable app is to put yourself in user's place. I totally agree with it, but what I want to see in this topic is specific techniques (like those I mentioned above) rather than general recommendations.

• J2ME's extra annoying HTTP permission prompt

  Some phones only prompt the user for permission the first time a connection is made. Others pop up the permission prompt whenever the MIDlet attempts to make a HTTP connection! What are the options if we want to suppress the prompt? Can we sign the JAR using only one CA (Certificate Authority) and have it work on all devices? Do we have to pay for a signature on every release? Is it an option to create our own CA certificate and tell our customers to install it on there device? Alternatively, it seems that plain socket connections do not suffer so. Is there a free implementation of HTTP on top of TCP for J2ME?

• Advice on simple efficient way to store web form data when no db/auth required

  Hi, I have a situation where I need to provide an efficient way to process and store comments submitted via a web form. I would normally use PHP and either MySQL or XML to store the data, but this is slightly different in that this web form will only be temporarily available in a closed LAN environment, and all i need to do is process the form data and store it a format which can be accessed by another application on the LAN (Adobe Director). Each request made by the Director app should pop the stack of data. I'm wondering how best to store the data for this type of situation as it's not something I would normally do. I'm thinking possibly storing the data in an XML file, but any advice would be great!

• Breadth first search all paths

  First of all, thank you for looking at this question. For a school assignment we're supposed to create a BFS algorithm and use it to do various things. One of these things is that we're supposed to find all of the paths between the root and the goal nodes of a graph. I have no idea how to do this as I can't find a way to keep track of all of the alternate routes without also including copies/cycles.   Hi, lang: c#.net 2.0 I have a Application X, that calls SubWindows 1, 2 and 3. I will Pop up a MessageBox, when 1, 2 or 3 is opened. My idea is a timer that ticks every 3 seconds and checks if the windows are opened. But how to find the 3 exact windows? Can I use a Window-Handle-Spy-Application and Hardcode the Window-Handles in my code to find them ever? Or change the window handle when the Application X is opened new?

• How to organize XIB files with many overlapping elements?

  I have some XIB files which are very difficult to edit because many of the subviews overlap each other completely. For example, if I position a popup volume slider where it will pop up, it covers some UILabels which become impossible to click. My only chance to be able to edit them is to double-click on them in the Document window tree, move them aside, edit, then move them back. Sometimes there are 3 or more widgets that occupy the same location in the XIB, even though only a few are visible at a time while the application is running. How are conditionally-visible screen elements actually supposed to be organized? I would like to be able to hide groups of views to reveal what's beneath them, but I don't see a way to do that in IB. If I create UIViewControllers for every group, I can edit them in separate windows, but I can't see them in context, and I need a lot of view controllers...

Quickly recalling I see following advantages: Simple structure (pop/push), trivial to implement Most processors are anyway optimized for stack operations, so it is very fast Less problems with memory fragmentation, it is always about moving memory-pointer up and down for allocation and freeing complete blocks of memory by resetting the pointer to the last entry offset. Is the list complete or did I miss something? Are there programming language runtime environments which are not using stacks for storage at all?

  function negativeValues(){ var myTextField = document.getElementById('digit'); if(myTextField.value < 0) { alert("Unable to submit as one field has a negative value"); return false; } } Above is a Javascript piece of code where every time a field id 'digit' has a value that's less than 0, than an alert box appears either onsubmit or onclick in the submit button. There are about 50 fields in the form that should be considered 'digit' fields where they shouldn't be anything less than 0. What should I change with this Javascript to ensure that all 'digit' like fields have this alert box pop up? I cannot use jquery/mootools for validation - it has to be flat Javascript. Thanks.

I usually wrap this call in an Invoke: BeginInvoke (new Action (() => { MessageBox.Show ()); })); I've got 2 questions: Do I always need to wrap the MessageBox call in an Invoke if I'm calling from a non-GUI thread? If so, should I use BeginInvoke or Invoke? I found not much difference in my tests, BeginInvoke is, as expected (and unlike Invoke), displayed with a slight delay.

  Hey guys, When using the Facebook Connect AS API, the user will be prompted to log in to FB in a pop up window. At this point I want to block interaction in my flash movie and wait for them to complete logging in (or potentially close/cancel and not log in). I have seen examples where people put up a Flex "Alert" box with some hint like "Press ok once you have logged into facebook", but I want to automatically listen for them logging in or canceling/closing the popup window without logging in. Is there an event I can listen for with flash? So far I am using ZERO javascript, but I guess I could add a little if it is needed for this... I definitely want to avoid having some sort of "Press OK" alert box, but instead have the flash application automatically react to the user logging in with the popup window.

  I would like to be able to pop multiple views from a UITableViewController stack. For example in the Apple DrillDownSave example, when viewing Level 3 to go back to Level 1 or when viewing an Item to go back to Level 2 when a button is pushed. I tried: [self.navigationController.parentViewController.navigationController popViewControllerAnimated: NO]; [self.navigationController popViewControllerAnimated: NO]; and [self.navigationController popViewControllerAnimated: NO]; [self.navigationController.parentViewController.navigationController popViewControllerAnimated: NO]; but these leave me the same place as just a single popViewControllerAnimated:. Is there an easy way to do this?

• How to implement a "hidden" Android app?

  I would like an application which is not readily apparent to casual perusal of the Android. How best to activate it and bring its screen to the fore? Can I detect a special dialing sequence, like *1234#? Or a hotkey combination? When activated, I guess I can pop up an anonymous screen which does not mention the app, but only asks for a password. If password is ok, then show the app. Any suggestions?

• In FLEX, How can you stop ENTER Key from my Alert being caught by the control that initiated the Al

  I am having an issue where I show an AlertBox message when the user hits ENTER and the focus is in a text area. The pop up works fine, but when the user hits enter the Alert closes as expected, but the TextArea listener receives the ENTER event from the Alert and pops the dialog up again. I have tried a number of ways to catch and eat the event but so far I have not been lucky. • How to call another class's method from my app delegate

  I have an application that utilizes UILocalNotifications to pop-up UIAlertViews. When the notification fires, the user chooses to go into the app, and this method is called from my app delegate: - (BOOL)application:(UIApplication *)application didFinishLaunchingWithOptions:(NSDictionary *)launchOptions {...} Where I can handle it and where I also prompt another alertview for more information. So when the app launches, it is displaying view A, and then the alertview pops up and prompts for input. This alertview, however, is originating from my app delegate. I need to be able to reload view A when the user hits Yes/No on the alertview. How can I do that from within my app delegate? Any help is appreciated!!

  I have VSS 6.0. I have branched my project so that I can do parallel development. I have 100s of files in folder/subfolders. I have changed some 10-20 files in multiple folders in ver 2 branch. Now I want to merge changes done in ver 2 to ver 1 branch. When I select the project merge branches option is not enabled. neither is it enabled when I select multiple files inside a folder. It's only enabled when one file is selected. Can I not merge on folder / multiple files in VSS 6.0. My thinking was when I do merge on project, VSS would pop up file names whenever there's a conflict (i.e files that are changed)

  I have a DAE model that is parsed into several parts. I am able to deal with them separately, such as changing their material or colour but I am having problems adding click or hover listeners over the children. For example, lets say I have a model of a kitty where each facial feature is a child. I want to be able to hover or click the features and have a window pop up explaining the feature.   phpQuery is a really nice tool which has helped me tremendously in the past parse well-formed XHTML and XML documents, but I have recently run into a problem trying to select elements that have colons in their tagname, such as the following: <isc:thumb><![CDATA[http://example.com/foo_thumb.jpg]]></isc:thumb> I've tried to use the pq() function to select all of these elements: foreach ( pq("isc:thumb") as $thumbnail ) { print pq( $thumbnail )->text(); } Unfortunately this is doing nothing. If I try another element, like a tagname of id, the results pop up as expected.

• Can this loop be sped up in pure Python?

  I was trying out an experiment with Python, trying to find out how many times it could add one to an integer in one minute's time. Assuming two computers are the same except for the speed of the CPUs, this should give an estimate of how fast some CPU operations may take for the computer in question. The code below is an example of a test designed to fulfill the requirements given above. This version is about 20% faster than the first attempt and 150% faster than the third attempt. Can anyone make any suggestions as to how to get the most additions in a minute's time span? Higher numbers are desireable.   Hi guys, I am trying to use jQuery (latest version) & ajax to poll a mysql db every x seconds, post.php does a simple search query on the table and limits to 1 row. (eg SELECT id FROM TABLE LIMIT 1) I've got some other jQuery UI (using v1.8) code that displays some modal/dialog boxes on the screen, simply put if post.php returns something from the db I need to initialise the dialog to pop up onto the screen.
