• Why is passing a string literal into a char* arguament only sometimes a compiler error?

  I'm working in a C, and C++ program. We used to be compiling without the make-strings-writable option. But that was getting a bunch of warnings, so I turned it off. Then I got a whole bunch of errors of the form "Cannot convert const char* to char* in argmuent 3 of function foo". So, I went through and made a whole lot of changes to fix those. However, today, the program CRASHED because the literal "" was getting passed into a function that was expecting a char*, and was setting the 0th character to 0. It wasn't doing anything bad, just trying to edit a constant, and crashing. My question is, why wasn't that a compiler error? In case it matters, this was on a mac compiled with gcc-4.0.

  I have created numerous polygon shapes in SVG format. and grouped them together. When the user hovers over the group a tooltip box appear. I have used ecmascript. What i am looking to do is make the tooltip box a multiline box. When the model is created the object is persisted with a POST to the web server, but when the model is destroyed there is no DELETE sent to the server? • Subtracting Delphi Time Ranges from a Date Range, Calculate Remaining Time

  I'm looking for an algorithm that will help calculate a workday working time length. It would have an input date range and then allow subtracting partially or completely intersecting time range slices from that date range and the result would be the number of minutes (or the fraction/multiple of a day) left in the original date range, after subtracting out the various non-working time slices. For Example: Input date range: 1/4/2010 11:21 am - 1/5/2010 3:00 pm Subtract out any partially or completely intersecting slices like this: Remove all day Sunday Non-Sundays remove 11:00 - 12:00 Non-Sundays remove time after 5:00 pm Non-Sundays remove time before 8:00 am Non-Sundays remove time 9:15 - 9:30 am Output: # of minutes left in the input date range I don't need anything overly-general. I could hardcode the rules to simplify the code. If anyone knows of sample code or a library/function somewhere, or has some pseudo-code ideas, I'd love something to start with. I didn't see anything in DateUtils, for example. Even a basic function that calculates the number of minutes of overlap in two date ranges to subtract out would be a good start.

  I want to create a link like this: <a href="http://example.com">text</a> and replace the behavior so that the link downloads the content with Ajax instead when clicking. It is important for me not to replace the href attribute (so copying the link still works). One solution would be to do: $('link').onclick = function() { return false; }; but I would like to use the .observe method. But this doesn't work: $('link').observe('click', function() { return false; }); (which is quite logical). Any ideas on how I could achieve this? Thanks.

• How do I create a view with a picker on the bottom and a table view on the top?

  Hi - first time asker, long-time lurker. I am trying to create an iPhone view that has a date/time picker on the bottom half of the screen, and a grouped, single-section, four-row table view on the top half of the screen (almost identical to the one Apple shows in Fig. 2-4 of their View Controller Programming Guide (but then never goes on to explain). Conceptually, I think I understand that what I need is a main view with a pair of subviews - one for the picker, and one for the table view. I'm pretty sure I can make the picker function once I have it on-screen, and I'm pretty sure I can make the table view function too. What I can't for the life of me figure out is how, programmatically speaking, to get the two views onto the screen simultaneously. I can lay it out perfectly in Interface Builder, but then it all goes to hell when I switch to Xcode...the view appears with the picker, but no table view. • Memory Leak with jQuery UI inside UpdatePanel in ie7

  I have a fairly complex asp.net page based on UpdatePanels and jQuery UI. Unfortunately, when the panels update, the jQuery UI widgets leak memory like crazy in ie7, even if I manually 'destroy' them. Does anyone know a technique/patch to prevent these leaks? I've created a simple example page with a slider inside an UpdatePanel. • Use LINQ to count the number of combinations existing in two lists

  I'm trying to create a LINQ query (or queries) that count the total number of occurences of a combinations of items in one list that exist in a different list. For example, take the following lists: CartItems DiscountItems ========= ============= AAA AAA AAA BBB AAA BBB BBB CCC CCC DDD The result of the query operation should be 2 since I can find two combinations of AAA and BBB (from DiscountItems) within the contents of CartItems. My thinking in approaching the query is to join the lists together to shorten CartItems to only include items from DiscountItems. The solution would be to find the CartItem in the resulting query that occurs the least amount of times, thus indicating how many combinations of items exist in CartItems. How can this be done? Here's the query I already have, but it's not working. query results in an enumeration with 100 items, far more than I expected.
