• Ad hoc network between iPhone and non iPhone devices???

  Is it possible to set up a ad hoc network between an iPhone and a totally different device like camera,scanner or printer and build a data tunnel between them to exchange data or services. I believe iPhone does not have the provision of creating an ad hoc network. So i am assuming that the other device are the initiator of the ad hoc network. I tried doing the same with a mac book and iPhone and i could surf on the phone after enabling internet sharing. But i wanted to make sure that its possible with other devices as well I believe the upcoming WiFi Direct is a way to do it.

  Hi, I want some help on UIAccelerometer class. I want to find some way to find out or distinguish when I wave iphone device from right-to-left and the left-to-right. I am getting x,y,z values as well as interval value. I am also getting velocity and distance calculated from normal physics rule. Distance = (prevDist + sqrt(pow((prevx - acceleration.x), 2) + pow((prevy - acceleration.y), 2) + pow((prevz - acceleration.z), 2))) Velocity = (Distance * timeintercal) { here distance means newdistance-prevdistance and timeinterval for that distance } When I am moving iphone device right-to-left then left-to-right I am getting total distance traveld in both direction and velocity at regular intervals. Can you help me how I can find out that I am moving iphone device left-to-right or right-to-left? Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Replicating iPhone Calendar View Lame?

  I am building an iPhone app that will need to display info primarily in a calendar view. Users will need to be able to search for entries and view them by day, month or in a list view. It seems like the built-in calendar type interface is ideal for my app. So I could build a similar calendar with 3 buttons at the bottom for list/day/month view as well as a button for today, in short a very similar interface to the built in iPhone calendar with different colors primarily. However, if I replicate it am I a) a lame copycat for replicating the built-in interface or smart for using a well-known iPhone metaphor and b) in danger of having my app rejected?

  New to iPhone 3.2, Apple introduced File-Sharing support. Now, most examples floating around in the web demonstrates writing to the documents directory. What if I want to write files from my app but I don't want the user to be able to see it via iTunes? I'm looking at the Files and Networking section of the iPhone OS Programming Guide and I'm unsure what would be a good alternative to the documents directory for writing files to hide from the user and not be rejected by Apple's review team.

  Apple just announced the iAd platform as part of iPhone OS 4. It essentially is an embedded application with a unified interface where you close the embedded application using a small x in the corner. This is obviously a nice experience for users, that could be used by other advertising platforms or to provide an embedded application such as dictionary service. While details remains sketchy on the iPhone OS 4 public APIs, I am wondering if expert iPhone developers know whether this functionality can be replicated by third-party ad providers, or others interested in something like an embedded dictionary service. Is this possible?

But when I took out the SIM from iPhone, I did not get my location. I tried the same with the Locate me Sample Application .   I have been asked to write a compliment website/service for an iPhone app. The app creates images. The author wants these images to be uploaded onto the server, into their personal storage area. These images need to be able to be pulled down to the iPhone later for editing. The user will be able to use the website as well to see these images. I have yet to decide (or understand) what the best way of implementing this would be. And with no experience with iPhone development I have no idea what it can actually handle.

I currently do not own a Mac but would purchase a Mac Mini if I was to buy an iPhone. Would it be better to buy iPhone and Mac because it will be better in the long run because of the amount of users or Android?

• Real time video stream from camera via server to Iphone

  Hi I want to create an Iphone app that can display real time video from a camera. The intended setup is. Camera connected to Mac Mini delivering real time video to Iphone over local network. The Iphone doesn't need to display high quality or use a high frame rate, but it has to be real time. Max 1 sec delay. I've been searching a lot for a solution, but so far I have not found a resonable one. HTTP Live Stream is not a solution due to the delay. Any suggestions?

• iPhone simple commercial barcode reader via camera

  Hey all, I've done some iPhone programming (safely midlevel) and now a requirement has come up for us to write a barcode reader that uses the iPhone camera. This is not for shopping or the general public but will be for internal use. My first thought was to simply programatically take a picture, upload it to server, and have a web service or something similar handle the heavy lifting of extracting the numbers out of the bar code. However I recently installed some apps already available on the iPhone that read bar codes, refer you to shopping sites, etc. and they seem to use the video camera to identify barcodes and extract the numbers. Does anyone know how this is being done or could point me to some open source or sample code?

• Extract object (*.o) files from an iPhone static library

  I have a set of iPhone static libraries (a *.a file) in which I only call a few of the classes from. I have used AR in the past (with linux libraries) to extract the object files from the static library, remove the unwanted object files and rearchive. However, when I try this with an iPhone compliled static library, I get the following error: ar: CustomiPhoneLib.a is a fat file (use libtool(1) or lipo(1) and ar(1) on it) ar: CustomiPhoneLib.a: Inappropriate file type or format Does anyone know how to extract the object files from an iphone compiled static library? Doing thie could potentially reduce the final file size.

I'm wondering how far back I should go back and where I should start as far as becoming familiar with coding before the iPhone SDK course on Lynda.com isn't something that makes my eyes glaze over. My experience: I taught myself html from the html for dummies book maybe 10 years ago, I've taken a dreamweaver class and built a few sites with it, and I've customized a self hosted Wordpress blog by playing with the php code. I suppose I could just use an image of the label but...ew. Bonus points if there's a way to show the current value of a slider in some sort of number format.

  My question is about the iPhone accelerometer. Does the accelerometer measure acceleration or movement of the iPhone? What I mean is if I hold the iPhone and go from 0mph to 60mph, I would expect the measure of acceleration to increase in value from 0 to 60, but once I reach 60, I expect the value to return to 0 since I am "no longer accelerating" but am moving at a constant speed. Now if the accelerometer measure motion, I would expect it to register 0 to 60 and continue to provide a change in value as I move forward at 60mph. Sorry, I looked at a few books, programmed some code (values seemed to small to give a recognizable result over short distances or speeds), and a lot of web searches, and I am trying to get an answer to this question. I want to create a shared framework containing this shared components but to my surprise, frameworks like we cocoa developers known them are not supported on the iphone os. Currently I see the following options: a) Include the files in both projects (much tedious work) b) Create a static library for both projects and manually copying the images/core data models c) Create a static lib for iphone and a framework for mac Any suggestions?

  Hi there! I was looking for some opinions on the best remote method invocation practices when developing iPhone applications that communicate with Java (java EE) servers. Many iphone applications these days typically talk to a server back end. I typically prefer to write my servers in java using some Spring libraries. So far I have not found or stuck to a definitive practice for iphone-java server communication. What are some technical solutions and libraries that you have used to implement this kind of client-server communication? One thing I always keep in mind is that I want the communication protocols to be simple so that multiple platforms can be added for example, in future adding Android and possibly Blackberry clients, that can use the same protocol to talk to the server.

• iPhone - Open excel from SSRS 2008

  We're currently having a problem with our 2008 SSRS server sending excel reports to users with iPhones. They get the email with no problems, but when the XLS file is opened on the phone, it returns an error of: Invalid format. Everyone else can open the report with no problems (email/blackberry) The odd thing, is I can drag the file to my desktop from the message, open it, save it, and then email it again and it opens just fine on the phone. Does anyone know of hotfix that can be applied to the SSRS server to create the XLS files correctly? Or something I can change to make this work? I know we can send all the attachments in PDF but I'd like to keep them XLS if at all possible.

• iPhone - Outlook 2010 sync'd items

  I'm not sure if this is a problem with Outlook 2010, or the fact that I don't have an Exchange box, or the fact that I have two MAPI mailboxes (both using Outlook Live Connector), or something else... so let me just describe the situation. iTunes says that I'm sync'ing happily, all the Calendar, Contact items, Notes... and if I have changed several things I get the "you're changing more than 5% of items" warning, persuading me that the sync'ing is working. I just can't find those items on my PC. They're not sync'ing with either of my Live accounts (Calendar or Contacts), and I can't find any track of anything. iTunes says I have Calendar folders called "" and "Calendar", but doesn't show any Contact groups at all. So how do I find out where they're going to... or change where they're going to... or anything?

  A client has a Sonicwall Pro 2040 running SonicOS 3.0, and they'd like to be able to use the L2TP VPN client from their iPads to connect to internal services (Citrix, etc). I've enabled the L2TP VPN server on the Sonicwall, made sure to set AES-128 for phase 2, and set up the configuration on a test iPad with the appropriate username, password, and pre-shared key. • Can't sync iphone when sync podcasts selected

  I've gone through the following steps: Loaded up iTunes 10 on a Windows7 machine Went to iTunes store and subscribed to a podcast Selected sync podcasts Clicked sync However, it always hangs on step 1 of 3 - it just gives a status of 'Backing up' and never progresses past that. I've waited over an hour 3 times now. I'm getting so infuriated with this iTunes software; I'm afraid I might damage my PC in frustration ;-) Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  I know that the Settings menu says that less frequent fetches improve battery life, but is the increase significant, esp. on a device with lots of batty like the iPad? What is the difference between 1-hour fetch, 15 minute fetch, and manual in terms of battery life?
