• New Bing Maps

  Normally I don't stray too far from Programming and TFS on my blog posts but I'm just really impressed with how much Silverlight has improved Bing maps. I use to be big on MapQuest, then hopped over to Google, but now the new Bing Maps have everything I need. The two coolest features are right on the main page. All you have to do is go to http://www.bing.com/maps/explore/, enter your city and hit enter in the search box, then look in the lower left corner under the EXPLORE section. Check out the "What's nearby" and "Restaurants" links. The best part is, if you're interested in doing any Silverlight programming, they have a Bing Maps Silverlight Control Interactive SDK. I was thinking about coding something....but they've pretty much got it down :) Pretty impressive stuff.

• Do PHP-FPM (and other PHP handlers) need execute permissions on the PHP files they're serving?

  I read in a post at Server Fault that PHP-FPM needs execute permissions. However, the answer in When creating a website, what permissions and directory structure? only grants read and write permissions to PHP-FPM. Maybe I don't quite understand how PHP handlers (or CGI in general) work, but the two claims seem contradictory to me. As I understand, when Apache / Nginx gets a request for foobar.php, it "passes" the file to an appropriate handler. That is, I imagine it's as if www-root (or apache or whomever the webserver's running as) were to run some command, /usr/sbin/php-fpm foobar.php Actually, no, that's naive, I just realized. PHP-FPM must be a running instance (if it's to be performant, and cache, etc.), so probably PHP-FPM is just being told, "Hey, quick, process this file for me!" In either case, I don't see why execute permissions are necessary. It's not like the webserver needs to literally execute the file, i.e. ./foobar.php Is the Server Fault answer simply mistaken?

• Regular wireless dropouts on new lenovo T440s in Ubuntu 14.04

  Over the last 24 hours my wireless has dropped out regularly. I've tested to make sure it isn't my router (my phone and everyone in the house isn't having problems using the wifi). This is a brand-new installation of Ubuntu 14.04 and according to uname I'm running kernel 3.13.0-24-generic. Now, my laptop has an Intel 7260AC dual band wireless card and I've read that Ubuntu has been having trouble with these. I notice that at http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/CS-034398.htm There are some updated drivers for my kernel version. However I have no idea how to update the kernel to use these drivers instead so that I can see if this will fix it. Can anyone help? These dropouts are really annoying. EDIT: Upgrading to 3.14.6 did not help.

• My First robots.txt

  I'm creating my first robots.txt and wanted to get a second opinion on it. Basically I have a FTP setup on my board for some special users to transfer files between each other and I do NOT want that included in the search by the bots. I also want to point to my sitemap which gets auto generated by a PHP page. So here is what I have, what else should I include, and if I need to fix anything with it? Also, it's linking to xmlsitemap.php because that generates the sitemap when called. My goal is to allow any search bot crawl the forums to grab meta data.   Alright so I've had Linux Ubuntu 12.04 for over a year now and I still don't know anything about it. That only thing I can do with it is use the internet. I want to start streaming games that I play on my computer to Twitch.tv., but I don't know how. All of the downloads are only for windows. I found a website that tells you how to do it, but since I know nothing about linux, I can't do it. I haven't been able to get past the first step yet. • I have a large number of links on every page, for design reasons I want to keep it but is it hurting my SEO

Its a lot of links and it's on a lot of pages. If so - what is a way to get google to ignore links below the top level. I had thought google would see that the links are hidden by default and only shown on hover but I can't verify this at all. We absolutely want to keep the menu, our customers like it and so do we - we think it is pretty usable as we have a lot of products to look at. • What's the difference between my nameserver and CName settings?

  I have purchased a domain name(mxsoup.net) through GoDaddy, and it is just parked. In order to set up my custom URL for my SourceAudio site, they give me the following instructions: In order to host your site at a your own URL, we need you to set up some DNS records to point your URL to us. Specifically, we need two CNAME references, one for 'www.mxsoup.net' and one for 'secure.mxsoup.net', both of which should point to 'web2.sourceaudio.com'. But the rep on the phone at GoDaddy said that my site is hosted at HostMonster.com, and therefore I need to talk to them to accomplish this(which is possibly true, but my business owner says he hasn't purchased hosting for this particular domain, yet he does have some other sites in his hostmonster hosting acct.) My GoDaddy account shows that my nameservers are pointing at NS1.HOSTMONSTER.COM, and NS2.HOSTMONSTER.COM, and I can edit those. But is this the same as setting up the CNAME as described above? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• Slow wifi after upgrading kubuntu 13.04 to 13.10

  After upgrading from kubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 suddenly my wifi connection is very slow. Ping times are varying from 200 up to 1500 ms to www.google.nl. When I connect my ethernet cable they drop to normal times like 8 or 9 ms. Anyone experiencing the same problem or know a solution I can try? During the upgrade process a few times they asked whether I wanted to keep or replace some kind of configuration file. I'm not sure anymore which file it was, but maybe this has something to do with it. Before the upgrade both wired and wireless connection worked perfect.

I am trying scale the game to any user selected resolution without changing the way I am rendering, or game logic. What is the best way to scale a game to any arbitrary resolution? • Why "Fork me on github"?

  I understand how Github works, but one thing I've been confused about is, why almost every OSS project lately has a "Fork me on Github" link on their homepage. For example, http://jqtjs.com/, http://www.daviddurman.com/flexi-color-picker/, and others. Why is this so common? Is it that they want/need code validation, checking for security/performance improvements that they may not know how to do? Is it meant to show that this is a collaborative project - you're welcome to add improvements? Do they work for Github, or want to promote their service? Oddly enough, I don't think I've seen a "Fork project on Bitbucket" logo recently. My first reaction to that logo was that the project probably needs to be modified (forked) in order to integrate it with anything useful - or that they are encouraging fragmented codebase, encouraging everyone to make their own fork of the project. But I don't think that is the intent.

• How to configure extra buttons in Logitech Mouse

  Can anyone tell me how to configure all the buttons on a Logitech MX 620 mouse (http://www.logitech.com/en-us/support/mice/2987) under Ubuntu 12.04? Specifically, I like to make one of them just the ctrl key (for control clicking webpages) and another one ctrl-w to close tabs. I also normally make the scroll wheel page down for each click (otherwise it hurts my arms to be scrolling so much). I make pushing the wheel to the left = pageback and pushing to the right = page forward. I've searched for other answers to this and found something related here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1789807 But when I posted a followup post to solve the issue, no one responded --perhaps I made the mistake of posting to a question that had been "solved." I'm not sure how I'm supposed to reopen a question that is pertinent to my question but doesn't quite solve mine. Thank you for any help.

  Note: by external website I mean a website that we do not have access to the code. For example www.facebook.com I want to record how many social share clicks we have from our customer newsletters. For example, when a customer receives a newsletter they can click "Share this on Facebook" which shares the hosted version of the newsletter. If I wanted to record these newsletter clicks to our website I understand we'd use Google URL Builder (https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/1033867?hl=en) to create a UTM URL but because we're linking to an external site, how do we record this?
