• Microsoft Speech Recognition in web service

  I'm trying to use the System.Speech.Recognition namespace for recognizing speech in a web service. Actually, the WS calls a dll that uses this namespace. The problem is that...I can't. First, I had a Access denied error. After changing the Identity of my application pool to LocalSystem (security break, I know), that disappeared. But a timeout appeared. I receive no error, but no response either. I did some tests, and, the same code (very simple) that I use for recognizing the text in a WAV returns the answer in around 2 seconds, when integrated in a desktop application, but hangs and does nothing in a web application. I think I'm missing something... I'm not supposed to use System.Speech.Recognition in a web application? Am I supposed to use something else? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

• Error calling webservice from JQuery

  I have a strange problem when I'm trying to call a simple webservice method from Jquery. Locally it works fine, but on my test-server it does not. The jquery request looks like this (only showing the actual request and not the rest of the method): $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: "/Service/Service.asmx/AddTab", data: "tab=" + element.innerHTML, success: function(msg) { alert('success'); } }); When I run this locally from the test-server it works fine, which has me wondering if it could be some setting that I've missed in the IIS. If I navigate to the .asmx file and click the AddTab method I get a list of SOAP 1.1 and SOAP 1.2 XML, but not the HTTP POST request. • Two windows fullscreen on two different screen.

  Hi! I'm actually working on an app to display an image onto a Dome. The dome projection system is constitued of two projector and a pc running a GentoO Linux and KDE, with nvidia TwinView system. Since here i've used SDL to display a fullscreen windows, and it display my app onto the two screen. But i just figured that i need to project two different images, one on each projector. That's why i search for a solution to display a fullscreen window on the first screen (projector) and another on the second. But SDL fullscreen just extend the window to the two screens. I can use any librairie (since it light and free, as i will wrap it into my small "API"), or change display setting. BTW it would be nice to have openGL support, since SDL manage only one window ^^"

• Entity Framework: Data Centric vs. Object Centric

  I'm having a look at Entity Framework and everything I'm reading takes a data centric approach to explaining EF. By that I mean that the fundamental relationships of the system are first defined in the database and objects are generated that reflect those relationships. Examples Quickstart (Entity Framework) Using Entity Framework entities as business objects? The EF documentation implies that it's not necessary to start from the database layer, e.g. Developers can work with a consistent application object model that can be mapped to various storage schemas When designing a new system (simplified version), I tend to first create a class model, then generate business objects from the model, code business layer stuff that can't be generated, and then worry about persistence (or rather work with a DBA and let him worry about the most efficient persistence strategy). That object centric approach is well supported by ORM technologies such as (n)Hibernate. Is there a reasonable path to an object centric approach with EF? Will I be swimming upstream going that route? Any good starting points?

• Tricky Big-O complexity

That is as a product of the inner loop, the outer loop -- will never be executed more than 100 times, so it can be omitted. What I'm not sure about is the while clause, should it be incorporated into the Big-O complexity? For very large i values it could make an impact, or arithmetic operations, doesn't matter on what scale, count as basic operations and can be omitted?

  I am using Google Calendar as a storage engine for a calendar system I am building, however, I am using a single Google user account with multiple calendars, i.e. each user on my system has their own calendar within the one user account. I'm able to create a calendar per user just fine, but I would like to have FullCalendar retrieve the events for display purposes, without manually getting the magic cookie url from Google Calendar settings. • Specialization hierarchy in a domain-model

  I'm trying to make the domain model of a management system. I have the following kinds of persons in this system: employee manager top mananger I decided to define a User, from where employee, manager and top manager will specialize from. What I don't know is what kind of specialization hierarchy I should choose from. I thought of two ways: or Which might be preferable and why? As a long time coder, every time I try to do a domain-model, I have to fight against the idea of trying to think in how I'm going to code this. From what I've understood, I should not think about those matters in the domain-model, only in object relationships. I don't have to think of code duplication or any of these kind of details here, so I can't really pick any of the options over the other. Thanks

  Hi. I have an issue with System.Threading.Timer. I am scheduling some actions using a time in a windows service. The timer starts executing the callback after a specified dueTime period. The windows service starts up after reboot automatically. However, I have observed a strange thing after a system reboot- the callback method starts executing itself 3 or 4 minutes before the specified period. What might be the reason for such behavior? • Learning resources for Linux filesystem, command line, and structure

  Can anyone suggest some good materials for learning more about the Linux filesystem and command line? I have found myself frequently confused as to what programs go where on the Linux filesystem. I would like to learn how the various directories (var, etc, usr ...) are used and how to use the commandline more effectively. I come from the Windows development world (.NET developer) so I am very familiar with Windows system administration. However, when doing more and more work with PHP I found myself lost in the internals of Linux (specifically Ubuntu). For example I was having problems installing PEAR properly on my Ubuntu system and not understanding why it was installed where it was. All of my interactions with Linux machines is done via SSH so I would like to focus on the command line and the filesystem. Thanks for any suggestions.

• How should I measure Concurrent Licence Usage

  Hi I have detailed stats on user access to my system detailing login and logout times as well as machine used, network username etc. I am in need of measuring what I would term a concurrent user licences level based on this information. Now I could take the maximum logged in for any 1 day in a 3 month period say 170 or I could take the average say 133. Does anyone have or know of a formula for working this out or is it as simple as the high water mark which is 170 in my example. A client has recently gone from an unlimited licence to a concurrent licence so I am faced with the task of setting the initial licence level. There is potential for more licence sales in the future so I don't want it set to high and I do want it based on historical data that the system collects rather than guess work.

• How to schedule emails to send out

  Using PHP, I have a query that goes through my DB looking for pending tasks with reminder triggers at certain times of the day. I have a cronjob that runs every 10 mins and checks the DB for any rows that has "remind_me" field set to go off within the next 10 mins. If it does find something, what's the best way to queue an email with the task information? I guess I'll need some sort of message queue system, but how does the email part work? Will I need another cronjob that runs every minute to check the queue system?

• Is there a practical alternative to struct inheritance? (C#)

  I am writing code that will populate the Margin, Padding and BorderThickness properties of classes in the System.Windows.Documents namespace. Each of these properties accepts a value in the form of a System.Windows.Thickness, which is a struct. However, I wish to associate some additional data with each of these property assignments, which may subsequently be retrieved by my code. If Thickness were a class, I would inherit from it and define properties in the subclass to store my additional data items. But since it is a struct, inheritance is not possible. Is there any practical way to achieve this, while maintaining type-compatibility with the properties I am populating? Thanks for your ideas, Tim

In designing the system, I must take into consideration: Two types of input: standard shooter controls (lots of buttons being pressed and raw samples collected) and flight sim controls (the button's label is what the user presses to toggle something) Alternative software keyboard layouts (dvorak, azerty, etc) as supplied by the OS Alternative hardware keyboard layouts that supply Unicode characters My initial inclination is to sample the USB HID unicode scancodes. • What are people's opinions vis-a-vis my choice of authorization plugins?

  I'm slowly but surely putting together my first rails app (first web-app of any kind in fact - I'm not really a programmer) and it's time to set up a user registration/login system. The nature of my app is such that each user will be completely separated from each other user (except for admin roles). When users log in they will have their own unique index page looking at only their data which they and no-one else can ever see or edit. However, I may later want to add a role for a user to be able to view and edit several other user's data (e.g. a group of users may want to allow their secretary to access and edit their data but their secretary would not need any data of their own). My plan is to use authlogic to create the login system and declarative authorization to control permissions but before I embark on this fairly major and crucial task I thought I would canvas a few opinions as to whether this combo was appropriate for the tasks I envisage or whether there would be a better/simpler/faster/cheaper/awesomer option.

  As discussed here, I'm trying to add a WCF endpoint-extension; I've got it working, but I need to include the full assembly details: <extensions> <behaviorExtensions> <add name="protobuf" type="ProtoBuf.ServiceModel.ProtoBehaviorExtension, protobuf-net, Version=1.0.0.275, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=257b51d87d2e4d67"/> </behaviorExtensions> </extensions> What I would like to do (to avoid issues when updating etc, especially for samples) is to include just the names: <add name="protobuf" type="ProtoBuf.ServiceModel.ProtoBehaviorExtension, protobuf-net"/> (which is what you might expect from standard assembly-naming conventions) However, if I do this, I get a big error: Parser Error Message: An error occurred creating the configuration section handler for system.serviceModel/behaviors: Extension element 'protobuf' cannot be added to this element. Verify that the extension is registered in the extension collection at system.serviceModel/extensions/behaviorExtensions. Is it possible (and if so: how) to add an extension without having to specify the assembly-version?

  I stumbled upon this question: 7 power 7 is 823543. Which higher power of 7 ends with 823543 ? How should I go about it ? The one I came up with is very slow, it keeps on multiplying by 7 and checks last 6 digits of the result for a match. • Synchronizing thread communication?

  Just for the heck of it I'm trying to emulate how JRuby generators work using threads in C#. Also, I'm fully aware that C# haas built in support for yield return, I'm just toying around a bit. I guess it's some sort of poor mans coroutines by keeping multiple callstacks alive using threads.
