• (solved) jQuery click and drag/scroll window: jagged movement

  Edit: derp, using pageX/Y instead of clientX/Y -- apparently scrollBy expects input with that offset rather than the other. Jaggy movement gone. I am getting jagged movement when doing small scroll increments using the following bindings. Can anyone point me in the right direction for how to smooth this out? FYI, its intermittent. It seems like, if I click and hold for a second, then drag at a decent speed there are no problems. Edit: What the hell? I get this output on debug... obvious jog backwards and forwards. • Incremental Timer

  I'm currently using a Timer and TimerTask to perform some work every 30 seconds. My problem is that after each time I do this work I want to increment the interval time of the Timer. So for example it starts off with 30 seconds between the timer firing but I want to add 10 seconds to the interval then so that the next time the Timer takes 40 seconds before it fires. • PHP sessions causing Apache to hang indefinitely

  The problem is that every so often a page that writes to a Session will cause apache to hang forever for a particular session. Once this error occurs for one user any further modifications to any session of any user will cause the website to hang for this user. This problem has been my sole focus for days. I have a development VPS running Windows 2003 and default latest version of XAMPP using the standard PHP session handler. The code in question actually runs on two other machines perfectly normally so although my common sense says it’s a web server configuration issue but at this point I am willing to try anything. On further investigation there are no errors in the Apache, PHP or System event log. Resources are abundant and there is no “AJAX shit storm” or more than a couple writes to a session per page. I have also implemented session_write_close() wherever possible to try and help elevate the problem. I have checked the session’s directory which is set to “C:\windows\Temp” and found that once a user enters this hanging phase that the corresponding session file is exclusively locked and the only way to resolve this is to stop Apache and wait a few moments for the files to become unlocked and delete them. I am not wondering if deletion is required. The Sessions themselves only contain 4 bits of information. ShoppingCartID, UserID, UserLevel and Refering URL and are alphanumerical with an occasional slash.   Scenario: Programmer creates a branch for project 'foo' called 'my_foo' at revision 5 Programmer makes multiple changes to multiple files as he works on the 'my_foo' feature. At the end of each major step, say adding several new functions to class, the programmer does an svn commit on the appropriate files therefore committing them to the branch After several weeks and many commits later (each commit having a commit log describing what he did), the programmer merges the branch back into the trunk: #Assume the following is being done from inside a working copy of the trunk: svn merge -r 5:15 file:///path/to/repo/branches/my_foo Hazzah! he's merged all his changes back into trunk! There's much rejoicing and drinking of Mountain Dew. Now let's say another programmer comes along a week later and updates their working copy from revision 5 to revision 15. "Wow", they say. "I wonder what's changed since revision 5". • How do I avoid repetition in Java ResourceBundle strings?

  We had a lot of strings which contained the same sub-string, from sentences about checking the log or how to contact support, to branding-like strings containing the company or product name. The repetition was causing a few issues for ourselves (primarily typos or copy/paste errors) but it also causes issues in that it increases the amount of text our translator has to translate. The solution I came up with went something like this: public class ExpandingResourceBundleControl extends ResourceBundle.Control { public static final ResourceBundle.Control EXPANDING = new ExpandingResourceBundleControl(); private ExpandingResourceBundleControl() { } @Override public ResourceBundle newBundle(String baseName, Locale locale, String format, ClassLoader loader, boolean reload) throws IllegalAccessException, InstantiationException, IOException { ResourceBundle inner = super.newBundle(baseName, locale, format, loader, reload); return inner == null ? null : new ExpandingResourceBundle(inner, loader); } } ExpandingResourceBundle delegates to the real resource bundle but performs conversion of {{this.kind.of.thing}} to look up the key in the resources. Every time you want to get one of these, you have to go: ResourceBundle.getBundle("com/acme/app/Bundle", EXPANDING); And this works fine -- for a while. What eventually happens is that some new code (in our case autogenerated code which was spat out of Matisse) looks up the same resource bundle without specifying the custom control. This appears to be non-reproducible if you write a simple unit test which calls it with and then without, but it occurs when the application is run for real. Somehow the cache inside ResourceBundle ejects the good value and replaces it with the broken one. I am yet to figure out why and Sun's jar files were compiled without debug info so debugging it is a chore. My questions: Is there some way of globally setting the default ResourceBundle.Control that I might not be aware of? That would solve everything rather elegantly. Is there some other way of handling this kind of thing elegantly, perhaps without tampering with the ResourceBundle classes at all?

• Finding latency issues (stalls) in embedded Linux systems

  I have an embedded Linux system running on an Atmel AT91SAM9260EK board on which I have two processes running at real-time priority. A manager process periodically "pings" a worker process using POSIX message queues to check the health of the worker process. Usually the round-trip ping takes about 1ms, but very occasionally it takes much longer - about 800ms. There are no other processes that run at a higher priority. It appears the stall may be related to logging (syslog). If I stop logging the problem seems to go away. However it makes no difference if the log file is on JFFS2 or NFS. No other processes are writing to the "disk" - just syslog. What tools are available to me to help me track down why these stalls are occurring? I am aware of latencytop and will be using that. Are there some other tools that may be more useful? Some details: Kernel version: 2.6.32.8 libc (syslog functions): uClibc 0.9.30.1 syslog: busybox 1.15.2

• PHP Performance Metrics

  I am currently developing a PHP MVC Framework for a personal project. While I am developing the framework I am interested to see any notable performance by implementing different techniques for optimization. I have implemented a crude BenchMark class that logs mircotime. The problem is I have no frame of reference for execution times. I am very near the beginnig of this project with a database connection and a few queries but no output (bar some debugging text and BenchMark log). I have a current execution time of 0.01917 seconds. I was expecting this to be lower but as I said before I have no frame of reference. I appreciate there are many variables to take into account when juding performance but I am hoping to find some sort of metric to a) techniques to measure performance for example requests per second and b) compare results for example; how a "moderately" sized PHP application on a "standard" webserver will perform. I appreciate "moderately" and "standard" are very subjective words so perhaps a table of known execution times for a particular application (eg StackOverFlow's executing time). What are other techniques of measuring performance are there other than execution time? When looking at MVC Framework Performance Comparisom it talks about Requests Per Second (RPS). How is this calculated? I am guessing with my current execution time of 0.01917 seconds can handle 52 RPS (= 1 / 0.01917 ). This seems to be significantly lower than that quoted on the graph especially when you consider my current limited funcitonality.

• 501 Error during Libjingle PCP on Amazone EC2 running Openfire

  I am trying to implement Google's Libjingle (version: 0.6.14) PCP example and I am getting a 501: feature not implemented error during execution. Specifically, the error occurs after each "account" has connected, been authenticated and began communicating with the other. An abbreviated log of the interaction is provided at the end. I have set up my own jabber server (using OpenFire on an Amazon EC2 server), have opened all of the necessary ports and have added each "account" to the other's roster. The server has been set to allow for file transfers. My being new to working with servers, I am not sure why this error is occur and how to go about fixing it. Thanks in advance, AeroBuffalo P.S.   I'm attempting to execute an uninstaller (written in AppleScript) through AuthorizationExecuteWithPrivileges. • Backwards compatibility when using Core Data

  Could anybody shed some light as to why is my app crashing with the following error on iPhone OS 2.2.1 dyld: Symbol not found: _OBJC_CLASS_$_NSPredicate Referenced from: /var/mobile/Applications/456F243F-468A-4969-9BB7-A4DF993AE89C/AppName.app/AppName Expected in: /System/Library/Frameworks/Foundation.framework/Foundation I have weak linked CoreData.framework, and have the Base SDK set to 3.0 and Deployment Target set to SDK 2.2 The app already uses other 3.0 features when available and I did not have any problems with those. But apparently the backward-compatibility methods used for other features do not work with Core Data. The app crashes before app delegate's applicationDidFinishLaunching gets called. • Wordpress "Vote It Up" plugin help

  I'm creating a dig like site with wordpress, TDO Mini forms and Vote it up where people who live in the city can log on, post their ideas of how to improve the city and have others vote. on the home page there are 2 columns. right is the TDO submit form. left are the "Most Wanted" items. the posts with the highest rating. I've found an impressive lack of information on this plugin. im not great with php but i can make do most of the time. I want to output the post title, post author, links for yes and no votes as well as have the titles in the left column list in most popular order. preferably id like the home pages to have only the top 5 or so highest rated posts. I cant find any way to output that information as i need. I was really hoping there was a simple way to call the highest rated post titles in the loop for the main page but there doesnt seem to be a way. Bout the only thing i've found is the DisplayVotes tag which isnt incredibly helpful. does anybody know how i can accomplish this, or can provide some expert advise? help would be immensely appreciated.

• wamp cannot load mysqli extension

  WAMP installed fine, no problems, BUT... When going to phpMyAdmin, I get the error from phpMyAdmin as follows: "Cannot load mysqli extension. Please check your PHP configuration". Also, phpMyAdmin documentation explains this error message as follows: "To connect to a MySQL server, PHP needs a set of MySQL functions called "MySQL extension". This extension may be part of the PHP distribution (compiled-in), otherwise it needs to be loaded dynamically. Its name is probably mysql.so or php_mysql.dll. phpMyAdmin tried to load the extension but failed. Usually, the problem is solved by installing a software package called "PHP-MySQL" or something similar." • CakePHP belongsTo relationship with a variable 'model' field.

  I've got a problem with a belongsTo relationship in CakePHP. I've got an "Action" model that uses the "actions" table and belongs to one of two other models, either "Transaction" or "Tag". The idea being that whenever a user completes a transaction or adds a tag, the action model is created to keep a log of it. I've got that part working, whenever a Transaction or Tag is saved, the aftersave() method also adds an Action record. • How to arrange business logic in a Kohana 3 project

  I'm looking for advice, tutorials and links at how to set up a mid-sized web application with Kohana 3. I have implemented MVC patterns in the past but never worked against a "formalized" MVC framework so I'm still getting my head around the terminology - toying around with basic examples, building views and templates, and so on. I'm progressing fairly well but I want to set up a real-world web project (one of my own that I've been planning for quite some time now) as a learning object. I learn best by example, but example-based documentation is a bit sparse for Kohana 3 right now - they say so themselves on the site. While I'm not worried about learning the framework as I go along, I want to make sure the code base is healthily structured from the start - i.e. controllers are split nicely, named well and according to standards, and most importantly the business logic is separated into appropriately sized models. My application could, in its core, be described as a business directory with a range of search and listing functions, and a login area for each entry owner. The actual administrative database backend is already taken care of. Supposing I have all the API worked out and in place already - list all businesses, edit business, list businesses by street name, create offer logged in as business, and so on, and I'm just looking for how to fit the functionality into a MVC pattern and into a Kohana application structure that can be easily extended. Do you know real-life examples of "database-heavy" applications like directories, online communities... with a log-in area built on Kohana 3, preferably Open Source so I could take a peek how they do it? Are there conventions or best practices on how to structure an extendable login area for end users in a Kohana project that is not only able to handle a business directory page, but further products on separate pages as well? Do you know any good resources on building complex applications with Kohana? Have you built something similar and could give me recommendations on a project structure?

• Kerberos and/or other authentication systems - One time logon for all PHP scripts

  I'm managing a set of web apps, almost exclusively written in PHP, and would like to find an authentication platform to build a role-based authorization system on top of. Also, I'd like the authentication system to be extensible to use for, for example, system services (SSH, etc.) Here are some of the main characteristics I'm looking for, in order of importance: Easy PHP implementation (storing/reading easily roles, etc.). Redundant, if possible. If an auth system goes down everyone is not locked out. Has clients for Windows and Mac. Easy web-based administration (adding/removing users/roles, changing passwords). If not, I can build an administration system without too much effort. One-time log on. I'd also like, when an auth token is issued, to store the user's IP address and use that to authorize the user for some non web-based applications. For that reason, I'd like a desktop client to issue the token and revoke tokens when, for example, the user becomes idle at their workstation. I'm thinking Kerberos might be a solution, but what are other options?

  I'm writing a SOAP Server that will act as an endpoint for an external client. The external client expects SOAP 1.1. I'll be taking embedded business objects in the SOAP messages and passing them to an internal application, getting responses back and responding with SOAP messages to the eternal client. I did the traditional ASMX based web services several years ago. Now, I've been exploring WCF Services and wondering the best approach to take. 1) Should WCF be considered a superset of ASMX web services? 2) Is there any reason to still write new web services using ASMX instead of WCF? 3) Does WCF provide better facilities for working with SOAP messages, as opposed to SOAP Extensions? 4) Can I restrict communication to SOAP 1.1 using WCF, the way I can with a web.config change in ASMX? 5) Does WCF have an easy way to log or review the requests that hit the service without resorting to something like SOAP extensions? • Small-o(n^2) implementation of Polynomial Multiplication

  I'm having a little trouble with this problem that is listed at the back of my book, i'm currently in the middle of test prep but i can't seem to locate anything regarding this in the book. Anyone got an idea? A real polynomial of degree n is a function of the form f(x)=a(n)x^n+?+a1x+a0, where an,…,a1,a0 are real numbers. In computational situations, such a polynomial is represented by a sequence of its coefficients (a0,a1,…,an). Assuming that any two real numbers can be added/multiplied in O(1) time, design an o(n^2)-time algorithm to compute, given two real polynomials f(x) and g(x) both of degree n, the product h(x)=f(x)g(x). Your algorithm should **not** be based on the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) technique. Please note it needs to be small-o(n^2), which means it complexity must be sub-quadratic. The obvious solution that i have been finding is indeed the FFT, but of course i can't use that. There is another method that i have found called convolution, where if you take polynomial A to be a signal and polynomial B to be a filter. A passed through B yields a shifted signal that has been "smoothed" by A and the resultant is A*B. This is supposed to work in O(n log n) time. Of course i am completely unsure of implementation. If anyone has any ideas of how to achieve a small-o(n^2) implementation please do share, thanks.
