• Terminology For Web Development and General Programming/Software?

  EDIT: I should clarify. THe particular terms I listed below I fully understand. I also understand w3schools doesn't have the greatest information. These are just examples. I don't expect everybody to understand what an example is, but I hope the majority do. Does anybody have any resources listing terms related to programming and web development, or care to pitch in? Things like: Runtime Build time Framework Library Normalize I'm primarily a PHP developer so anything about that. I really am looking for general terms and specific terms related to web development, PHP, SQL, CSS, HTML. Appreciate any input. • Is there animation software available for Ubuntu?

  Is there commercial-grade computer animation software available for Ubuntu, similar to the professional software sold for the Windows operating system? This question goes out to those of you who may be using such software professionally. My daughter recently graduated from the Art Institute of Seattle, and needs to put together an animation portfolio in order to interest employers in the field. As you know, such software is usually provided by the employer and the costs are high - several thousand dollars. I suggested that she investigate Ubuntu as a possible way to acquire the tools she needs. But, since I have no idea what might be available, either as open source or proprietary animation software, I am reaching out to the Ubuntu community for help in the hope someone who is using such software can help her.   A few other students and I are forming a group that wants to become good at what we do: websites. We are making websites for free for friends at the moment in order to get ourselves some experience and to learn from each other. We are about to finish our first website this week. In 6 months time we plan to have a portfolio and hope to start charging for websites. The issue is that we are all beginners and we are unsure about how to keep records of the websites we do. It is important as we may want to maintain a few websites or add to them later on. How does a proper web design business keep records of all info needed? • How much to charge for Wordpress installation?

  I know this isn't properly a technical question but I hope this is ok here. The question is simple: how much should I charge a customer for a Wordpress installation & configuration? Configuration simply means I have to install him a theme (which is not provided by me), various plugins and maybe edit some lines of code here and there to make the whole thing work fine. MORE INFO I don't do this for a living, I'm just doing this for this single customer. He told me he wants to customize some features of the blog which I think will require a bit of code editing, but these will be small modifications, because I already told him that more substantial modifications will be billed separately. I don't know exactly how long will this take, but probably just 1 day for the setup and some more days to adapt the blog to the customer requests which will eventually come up later

• My rhythm game runs choppy even with high frame rate

  I'm coding a rhythm game and the game runs smoothly with uncapped fps. But when I try to cap it around 60 the game updates in little chunks, like hiccups, as if it was skipping frames or at a very low frame rate. The reason I need to cap frame rate is because in some computers I tested, the fps varies a lot (from ~80 - ~250 fps) and those drops are noticeable and degrade response time. Since this is a rhythm game this is very important. This issue is driving me crazy. I've spent a few weeks already on it and still can't figure out the problem. I hope someone more experienced than me could shed some light on it. I was using SDL_GetTicks, but even when I switched to QueryPerformanceCounter, supposedly less granular, I saw no difference. [2] Then I thought it could be due to a rounding error in my position computation and since game updates are smaller in high FPS that would be less noticeable. Indeed there is an small error, but from my tests I realized that it is not enough to produce the position jumps I'm getting. Also, another intriguing factor is that if I enable vsync I'll get smooth updates @60fps regardless frame cap code. So why not rely on vsync? Because some computers can force a disable on gfx card config. [3] I started printing the maximum and minimum frame time measured in 1sec span, in the hope that every a few frames one would take a long time but still not enough to drop my fps computation. It turns out that, with frame cap code I always get frame times in the range of [16, 18]ms, and still, the game "does not moves like jagger". [4] My process' priority is set to HIGH (Windows doesn't allow me to set REALTIME for some reason). As far as I know there is only one thread running along with the game (a sound callback, which I really don't have access to it). I'm using AudiereLib. I then disabled Audiere by removing it from the project and still got the issue. Maybe there are some others threads running and one of them is taking too long to come back right in between when I measured frame times, I don't know. Is there a way to know which threads are attached to my process? [5] There are some dynamic data being created during game run. But It is a little bit hard to remove it to test. Maybe I'll have to try harder this one. Well, as I told you I really don't know what to try next. Anything, I mean, anything would be of great help. What bugs me more is why at 60fps & vsync enabled I get an smooth update and at 60fps & no vsync I don't. Is there a way to implement software vsync? I mean, query display sync info? • Procedural Planets, Heightmaps and Textures

  I am currently working on an OpenGL procedural planet generator. I hope to use it for a space RPG, that will not allow players to go down to the surface of a planet so I have ignored anything ROAM related. At the moment I am drawing a cube with VBOs and mapping onto a sphere. I am familiar with most fractal heightmap generating techniques and have already implemented my own version of midpoint displacement (not that useful in this case I know). My question is, what is the best way to procedurally generate the heightmap. I have looked at libnoise which allows me to make tilable heightmaps/textures, but as far as I can see I would need to generate a net like this. Leaving the tiling obvious. Could anyone advise me on the best route to take? Any input would be much appreciated.

• Box2D platformer movement. Should i mess with velocity?

  I have a platformer game in which I implemented the movement using a wheel attached to the hero. For jumping I use this: player.body.applyLinearImpulse(new Vec2(0, 30000000), player.body.getPosition()); The problem is that the xVelocity doesn't remain the same during the jump so it isn't looking natural. Is there any way to modify only the x velocity of the body so that before jumping I store it in a variable and after jumping I apply it to the body? I hope you understand what I am trying to say.

• Set vertex position

  Can anyone tell me how to set the positions of model vertices? I want to be able to change the position of some of the vertices of a Model. Is there any way to make that happen? And make the changed visible at that moment. EDIT: Well, the thing is,I have a model, a cube, that is made up of four "thin" cubes(top,bottom,left side, right side), so I get this cube with "hole" in the middle. And I want to scale it on Y axis. If I do Scale(0,2,0) it will scale the whole object meaning, it will double the Y size of left and right side, but also double the size of the top and bottom cube, which I do not want. Same for X axis I want to double the size of top and bottom cubes but not the left and right one. Hope you can help

• Nagios3 crashes with SIGSEGV

  I installed nagios3 on ubuntu server 10.04.1. It was working fine. Today, I found it stopped and when I tried to start it using sudo /etc/init.d/nagios3 start, it did not start. I found this in the log file: Nagios 3.2.0 starting... (PID=11729) Local time is Wed Dec 22 14:15:31 2010 Caught SIGSEGV, shutting down... I tried to remove and re-install it without success. After googling, it seems that no one has a solution for this. I don't want to install it from source unless it is really the last hope.

• Retrieving snapshots of game statistics

  What is a good architecture for storing game statistics, so that I can retrieve snapshots of it at various moments? Say I have a game, and the user's statistics initially are: { hours_played = 0, games_played = 0, no_of_times_killed = 0, } When the user purchases something for the first time from within the game, the stats are { hours_played = 10, games_played = 2, no_of_times_killed = 5, } And when he purchases something for the second time, the stats are { hours_played = 20, games_played = 4, no_of_times_killed = 10, } Let me name the events as "purchase1" and "purchase2" How do I model my statistics, so that at any point in the future, I will be able to retrieve the snapshot of the statistics at the time when "purchase1" was fired. Similarly for "purchase2" and any other event I will add. Hope that made sense..

  I'm in the process of trying to introduce Version/Revision Control to a team of developers who have never used it. I'll be giving a presentation that I hope will be a persuasive explanation of the importance of Version Control -- the benefits of using it and the liabilities of avoiding it. I'd like to kick it off with an amusing but instructive list modelled after the "redneck" line of jokes. Can anyone help me add to this list? "You know you're a Version Control Avoider if..." You have a bunch of files or folders with names like Engine_05212012_works_old[2].cpp You've had to explain to your boss how you accidentally overwrote production code. I don't consider myself terribly witty, but I think a little humor could be helpful in this situation. Any ideas for how to extend this list? [Bonus points if you can suggest a better moniker than "Version Control Avoider"]

• After the update today no graphical interface anymore - 12.04

  I installed the updates through the update manager today. I shut down my Laptop and now after starting it up again, I only get terminal access to advices. Grub is loading fine and after I picked Ubuntu 12.04 the screen get blank and I am asked to log in with my username and password in command line mode. If I log in I am still in command line mode. How do I get the "normal (graphical)" Ubuntu back? I hope you know what I mean. Since English is not my first language I can't explain this the way I would like to. Mark

• Backing up bind mounted folders

  My layout is as follows. LVM Setup: /dev/VG/Documents, /dev/VG/Music, /dev/VG/Pictures, /dev/VG/Music, /dev/VG/Documents, etc.... Each of the LVMs is bind mounted to the corresponding folder name in /home/foo. For example, /home/foo/Documents bind mounted to /media/Documents (mount point of /dev/VG/Documents), etc. If I set up deja-dup to just back up my home folder, am I guaranteed that everything from my LVMs will be backed up properly? So let's say I take away my LVMs for some reason and choose to restore an earlier backup. My home folder will contain everything from the LVMs? All my docs, music, vids etc. My intuition tells me everything will be fine but it doesn't hurt to ask the the experts ;). Hope I have made myself clear. Thanks

• Hosting advice for a write-heavy dynamic website

  I have built a website using PHP and MySQL and now I am looking for a hosting service. I am expecting about a 1000 users registering and about 5-10k pageviews/day in a week's time. So which host should I opt for? It will let users submit contents of type blobs and submit around 10 pictures per users. I hope that traffic will increase so can justhost's or bluehost's shared hosting serve that purpose or should I go for more dedicated ones. Basically the site is write heavy and there are average 2-3 MySQL queries per page and it is quite dynamic. So depending on these requirements which web hosting will be optimal for me.

• delete /var/cache/* How can I fix it?

  I accidentally remove all files in /var/cache/ directory with sudo rm -rf command. Now I can not see the files in Trash to bring them back. I would like to know how bad is the situation if these files are removed? does ubuntu going to work normally and recreate the directories in cache again automatically? If not, which directories do I have to create in /var/cache/ manually to let everything work fine? I have already manually made apt and apache2 and debconf in cache directoy but I do not know if I miss more importand directory which needed to be created there. I hope somebody can guide me to fix this issue.

• Getting SSL certificate for a sub-domain

  Our company owns a domain say www.mycompany.com. I understand that it is trivial to get an SSL certificate for above domain since we do have a website running on that address. We want a certificate for a subdomain say sub.mycompany.com. We intend to use this sub-domain in our organisation network only and have no plans to publish a public website on this subdomain. So the question is "Is it necessary to have a DNS entry for subdomain, resolving to our IP address and host some page on that address?" I hope proving that main domain is in our control, we can get an SSL certificate for sub domain also. Is it possible?
