Need help from CSS purist!

I'm beginning to use CSS more and more but I'm not sure if I'm using it as intended in all cases. I have classes named things like 'box' that will wrap the content inside it with a border, which seems like good CSS to me. On the other hand I have classes like 'margin-right-5' and 'float-left' that sets the css to margin-right: 5px and float:left respectively. I'm wondering if this is good practice. Then in my markup I'd do something like: <div class="box float-left margin-right-5">  </div> Sometimes I may want to float right or not have a margin at all and still use the 'box' class, so I use several classes in order to make the css more flexible. Am I destroying the principles of CSS?

PHP Framework / Library Suggestions for a Backend

I am about to start to developing backend site of a php project. Companies and site admins will login to this site and manage their data on the project. My previous admin panel experiences were full of agony and pain. So I want to make sure that I choose correct tools for my purpose. By the way, please note, I'm not looking for scaffolding. There won't be much tables in my database. Instead, there will be complex logic between entities. I want clear seperation of markup and logic code and easy-to-use and standardized user-interface. where do i put html files in my web-app folder for a lift project with maven?

I'm new to Lift framework for scala. For some reason, index.html resides in the web-app directory, and when I start up jetty, http://localhost:8080/ will point to that index.html file just fine. However, if I put a login.html file in the same folder as the index.html, and then go http://localhost:8080/login, Lift does not serve the file. Where do I need to put the files to get them register? I am a little lost because the behaviour only seems to work for index.html and nothing else. How to force a line break after each image in Safari Reader?

I was unable to activate Safari Reader in a local HTML file, so I cannot give you a running example but only describe my problem: The markup of my blog posts is basically this: <div class="post"> <div class="post-header">Hello, World</div> <div class="post-body"> <p>Look at this picture:</p> <p><img src="http://37prime.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/safari_icon.png"/></p> <p>Isn't that a nice picture?</p> </div> </div> This looks as expected in all browsers, including Safari. In Safari Reader however, the third paragraph "Isn't that a nice picture?" is floating around the image, instead of being on a paragraph of it's own. Has anybody experienced a similar problem?

Using Regex to modify a String

I have a String that looks like this: Blah blah one.<tmp>[[url=b, link=c]]</tmp> Blah blah two. Also remember, blah blah three.<tmp>[[url=d, link=e]]</tmp> So I want to get b and d (the url attribute of tmp), and change the String so that it looks like this (the ex() function returns a String): Blah blah one.<tmp>[[url=b, link=c, add=ex(b)]]</tmp> Blah blah two. Also remember, blah blah three.<tmp>[[url=d, link=e, add=ex(d)]]</tmp> I need to use regex because no existing library parses this type of markup. I hope my explanation is clear. Thanks in advance!

ASP.net MVC: Getting a Partial View's HTML from inside of the controller

I have developed a simple mechanism for my mvc website to pull in html via jquery which then populates a specified div. All is well and it looks cool. My problem is that i'm now creating html markup inside of my controller (Which is very easy to do in VB.net btw) I'd rather not mix up the sepparation of concerns. Is it possible to use a custom 'MVC View User Control' to suit this need? Can I create an instance of a control, pass in the model data and render to html? It would then be a simple matter of rendering and passing back to the calling browser.

Parsing an Open XML doc via styled blocks

I'm working with docx docs, and I need to parse a document into sections on the basis of headings styled with the "heading 1" style. So if I had a doc like this (markup is pseudocode): <doc> <title style>Doc Title</title style> <heading1>First Section</heading1> ... <heading2>Second Section</heading2> ... <heading3>Third Section</heading3> ... </doc> I'd want to break this into a doc with four sections, the first being the content that precedes the first section. I figure that this is probably pretty simple once you're familiar with Open XML, but I am not. TIA.

function onload not working for IE7 and 8

Can anyone suggest something which works for both IE and Mozilla?

How do you set up your web server & document's html to correctly serve HTML5 documents?

Maybe I'm an idiot but I don't quite get what goes in the header of my HTML to use XHTML w/ HTML5. Is this still good and we just add the HTML5 tags?: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html dir="ltr" lang="eng" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> Or is it <!DOCTYPE html> or what? Then at A List Apart they say: If you do go with XHTML 5, remember that your server must deliver the documents with a MIME type of application/xhtml+xml or text/xml. Please explain to me as if I was stupid :) what that means in a practical sense? "deliver the documents"? Meaning html? What happens to php? What are the steps required to set up your web server this way?

Should we bother about IE < 8?

Hi there. It might look like philosophical question, however it really bother me. We're expecting HTML 5, we're using JS, Ajax, Flex, all this stuff, but when older browsers were devleoped, nooone even dreamed about such technologies. IE6 can't see transparency in PNG's. Some correct W3C techniques, are bad interpreted by IE6. It's just too old for our "new" world. IE7 is sight better better than IE6, but it still has some weird errors. How many people use IE6 now? And if someone upgraded to IE7, doesn't he already upgraded to IE8? Should we bother about those browsers? (sorry for bad eng, but noone in my country answered me to this)

Insert dependencies dynamically in View (Javascript and CSS Files)

Friends, I am willing to follow the rules of the W3C where it is recommended that javascript and CSS files should be in individual files and not within the page. Good, following this rule, and not wanting to overload the master page, I would like to embed the dependencies dynamically. So how could I insert the libraries dynamically? I think the bigger problem is the Ajax requests. Example: <script type="text/javascript" src="http://sstatic.net/so/js/master.js?v=6523"></script> I tried using the JavascriptResult, but he writes the content on the page, and do not run as "Stream." Any help is welcome. Thanks

Architecting a generic search result web control

In a project I'm currently working for we've stumbled upon the need for several kinds of search results presentation controls. The search result are similar, but not identical. For example, in the "office search" result we might want to present the office name and location, while in the "document search" could contain document name, author and publishing date. These fields should be sortable. My current strategy is to employ the Factory pattern and do something like this: ISearchResult officeResults = SearchResultFactory.CreateOfficeSearchResults(data); ISearchResult documentResults = SearchResultFactory.CreateDocumentSearchResults(data); The problem is: I don't know how to implement the markup code. Should I just do Controls.Add(officeResults); in the containing page? Or is there some ASPX trickery to create generic web controls? Or maybe I'm overthinking this and just should create five classes? ;)

After publishing a WPF application to a central location using ClickOnce, I am getting following exception when user tries to access the application. There are other applications, which works fine for them and issue is only when they access a particular application. I can't workout why this hence the exception doesn't seems to be very helpful. Adding custom tags in Wordpress

Hello, I'm creating a new WP theme and I would like to allow the user to insert a divider in between paragraphs or images he/she is entering, for a post/page. I want the output to be something like: <div class="divider"></div> But I don't want the user to have to enter HTML in the WYSIWYG editor. Is it possible to ask them to enter something like: <-- break --> and then translate that to the div markup on display? Thanks.

WPF - copy/paste selection with custom font family

I have a custom font family embedded in my WPF application which I can reference by specifying a base URI and font family name. new FontFamily(new Uri("pack://application:,,,/Fonts/"), "./#My Custom Font Family"); However, when I copy a selection which uses this font the xaml on the clipboard resembles the following <Run Text="Foo" FontFamily="./#My Custom Font Family" /> When I paste into the same RichTextBox I lose the font as it falls back to the system default because - When a FontFamily is specified as an attribute in markup, the base URI value is always implied—its value is the URI of the XAML page. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.windows.media.fontfamily.aspx and my xaml page is not located in the same directory as the custom font family. Any ideas for a workaround?

I've simplified the case to this: <asp:CheckBox ID="TestCheckBox" runat="server" onclick="alert('test');" Text="Test" /> The resulting HTML is as follows: <input id="MainContainer_TestCheckBox" type="checkbox" name="ctl00$MainContainer$TestCheckBox" onclick="alert('test');" /><label for="MainContainer_TestCheckBox">Test</label> What particularly bothers me is that a single quote 'automatically' gets converted into '''. If I omit the onclick in the markup and assign it in Page_Load, the exact same results show in the HTML. protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { this.TestCheckBox.Attributes["onclick"] = "alert('test');"; } Anyone got a clue about what's happening? Or how to fix/ avoid it?

Do invisible controls and their children on an ASP.NET page contribute to viewstate?

I have an ASP.NET page that has about 40 custom controls embedded in it. The controls vary in size; in their .ascx files, the biggest is about 1,500 lines and the smaller ones are between 100 and 200 lines (markup, script, etc). Each control is contained in a Panel. Only one of these panels is ever visible at any one time, which means only one control is ever visible at one time. My question is this: do the controls that are invisible still send ViewState for themselves and all their children to the client? It makes sense that they might have to serialize the fact that they're invisible, but not all the state info for their children...

I have @str = "<b>Hi</b>" and in my erb view: <%= @str > What will display on the page is: <b>Hi</b> when what I really want is Hi. What's the ruby way to "interpret" a string as HTML markup? Edit: the case where @str = "<span class=\"classname\">hello</span>" If in my view I do <%raw @str %> The HTML source code is <span class=\"classname\">hello</span where what I really want is <span class="classname">hello</span> (without the backslashes that were escaping the double quotes). What's the best way to "unescape" those double quotes?
