Compiling 32-bit Program on VS 2008

I've been developing on VC++ 2003 on an XP PC but am now on Windows 7 and bought a cheap legal copy of VS 2008 to continue work on the same project. My product has to continue to run on customers' XP systems, so I'm strictly interested in a 32-bit executable. The first issue I ran into was the PRJ0003 error "spawning cl.exe". I had to add the path to this file to the VC++ Directories settings (it appears in both a bin\amd64 and bin\x86_amd64 directory, but I don't think it matters output-wise which I use?). The issue I now have (not counting a tedious cleanup to convert strcpy to strcpy_s, etc.) is that I'm not clear on whether I'm generating a 32-bit or 64-bit exe out of this. My project properties are set to a target of "Win32", so I assume that all is well. Is this correct? I have read some discussions about this, but it's never quite clear if they are talking about whether the compiler itself is running x64 vs. x86, or whether the compiled code is x64 vs. x86, and how this is differentiated. So am I doing the right thing to generate a 32-bit, Win32, x-86 program?

getting active records to display as a plist

I'm trying to get a list of active record results to display as a plist for being consumed by the iphone. I'm using the plist gem v 3.0. My model is called Post. And I want Post.all (or any array or Posts) to display correctly as a Plist. I have it working fine for one Post instance: [http://pastie.org/580902][1] that is correct, what I would expect. To get that behavior I had to do this: class Post < ActiveRecord::Base def to_plist attributes.to_plist end end However, when I do a Post.all, I can't get it to display what I want. Here is what happens: http://pastie.org/580909 I get marshalling. I want output more like this: [http://pastie.org/580914][2] I suppose I could just iterate the result set and append the plist strings. But seems ugly, I'm sure there is a more elegant way to do this. I am rusty on Ruby right now, so the elegant way isn't obvious to me. Seems like I should be able to override ActiveRecord and make result-sets that pull back more than one record take the ActiveRecord::Base to_plist and make another to_plist implementation. In rails, this would go in environment.rb, right?

Fetch multiple rows from SQL in PHP foreach item in array

I try to request an array of IDs, to return each row with that ID, and push each into an Array $finalArray But only the first result from the Query will output, and at the second foreach, it skips the while loop. I have this working in another script, so I don't understand where it's going wrong. C++ const-reference semantics?

By mistake b points to this, which yields the undesired behavior. My question: What const-rules should you follow when designing getters/setters? My suggestion: Never return a reference to a member variable if it can be set by reference through a member function. Hence, either return by value or pass parameters by value. (Modern compilers will optimize away the extra copy anyway.)

Debugging a local SQL Server 2008 stored proceedure from Visual studio 2008

Hi all, There are a few posts about this question around but most concern remote debugging - here everything is on same machine. Visual studio 2008. I have a data connection to localhost SQL Server 2008 using Windows authentication with an admin account - this account is a member of sysadmin in SQL server. I double click stored proc and add a break point. I right click and select "Step into stored proceedure". I get the loathed and feared "Canceled by user." in output window. Does anyone know whats doing? Further - right clicking on the data connection shows both "Application debugging" and "Allow SQL/CLR Debugging". I have checked "Enable SQL Server debugging" on the properties of the C# client app. If run that in debug and try to step in to stored proc code "command.ExecuteNonQuery()" then the break points in the stored proc become disabled and are not pulled. After doing this once the right click on stored proc "Execute" and "Step into stored proceedure" are greyed/disabled. To get them back I have to restart visual studio (refresh connection doesn't do it). Any help much appreciated!! Cheers.

Show a number with specified number of significant digits

I use the following function to convert a number to a string for display purposes (don't use scientific notation, don't use a trailing dot, round as specified): (* Show Number. That's been serving me well for years. But sometimes I don't want to specify the number of digits to round to, rather I want to specify a number of significant figures. For example, 123.456 should display as 123.5 but 0.00123456 should display as 0.001235. To get really fancy, I might want to specify significant digits both before and after the decimal point. For example, I might want .789 to display as 0.8 but 789.0 to display as 789 rather than 800. Heapsort not working in Python for list of strings using heapq module

I was reading the python 2.7 documentation when I came across the heapq module. I was interested in the heapify() and the heappop() methods. So, I decided to write a simple heapsort program for integers: from heapq import heapify, heappop user_input = raw_input("Enter numbers to be sorted: ") data = map (int, user_input.split(",")) new_data = [] for i in range(len(data)): heapify(data) new_data.append(heappop(data)) print new_data This worked like a charm. To make it more interesting, I thought I would take away the integer conversion and leave it as a string. Logically, it should make no difference and the code should work as it did for integers: from heapq import heapify, heappop user_input = raw_input("Enter numbers to be sorted: ") data = user_input.split(",") new_data = [] for i in range(len(data)): heapify(data) print data new_data.append(heappop(data)) print new_data Note: I added a print statement in the for loop to see the heapified list. Satisfying indirect references at runtime.

I'm using C# and VS2010. I have a dll that I reference in my project (as a dll reference not a project reference). That dll (a.dll) references another dll that my project doesn't directly use, let's call it b.dll. None of these are in the GAC. My project compiles fine, but when I run it I get an exception that b.dll can't be found. It's not being copied to the bin directory when my project is compiled. What is the best way to get b.dll into the bin directory so that it can be found at run time. I've thought of four options. Use a post compile step to copy b.dll to the bin directory Add b.dll to my project (as a file) and specify copy to output directory if newer Add b.dll as a dll reference to my project. Use ILMerge to combine b.dll with a.dll I don't like 3 at all because it makes b.dll visible to my project, the other two seem like hacks. Am I missing other solutions? Which is the "right" way? Would a dependency injection framework be able to resolve and load b.dll?

C++: What is the size of an object of an empty class?

I was wondering what could be the size of an object of an empty class. It surely could not be 0 bytes since it should be possible to reference and point to it like any other object. But, how big is such an object? I used this small program: #include <iostream> using namespace std; class Empty {}; int main() { Empty e; cerr << sizeof(e) << endl; return 0; } The output I got on both Visual C++ and Cygwin-g++ compilers was 1 byte! This was a little surprising to me since I was expecting it to be of the size of the machine word (32 bits or 4 bytes). Can anyone explain why the size of 1 byte? Why not 4 bytes? Is this dependent on compiler or the machine too? Also, can someone give a more cogent reason for why an empty class object will not be of size 0 bytes?

PHP - How do you secure a unique variable name?

This function cropit, which I shamelessly stole off the internet, crops a 90x60 area from an existing image. In this code, when I use the function for more than one item (image) the one will display on top of the other (they come to occupy the same output space). I think this is because the function has the same (static) name ($dest) for the destination of the image when it's created (imagecopy). I tried, as you can see to include a second argument to the cropit function which would serve as the "name" of the $dest variable, but it didn't work. In the interest of full disclosure I have 22 hours of PHP experience (incidentally the same number of hours since the last I slept) and I am not that smart to begin with. i have a server application with a richtextbox as the console text basically. The problem is, i have start, restart and stop buttons - But my restart button doesn't work. How (and if) to write a single-consumer queue using the task parallel library?

I've heard a bunch of podcasts recently about the TPL in .NET 4.0. Most of them describe background activities like downloading images or doing a computation, using tasks so that the work doesn't interfere with a GUI thread. Most of the code I work on has more of a multiple-producer / single-consumer flavor, where work items from multiple sources must be queued and then processed in order. One example would be logging, where log lines from multiple threads are sequentialized into a single queue for eventual writing to a file or database. All the records from any single source must remain in order, and records from the same moment in time should be "close" to each other in the eventual output. So multiple threads or tasks or whatever are all invoking a queuer: lock( _queue ) // or use a lock-free queue! { _queue.enqueue( some_work ); _queueSemaphore.Release(); } And a dedicated worker thread processes the queue: while( _queueSemaphore.WaitOne() ) { lock( _queue ) { some_work = _queue.dequeue(); } deal_with( some_work ); } It's always seemed reasonable to dedicate a worker thread for the consumer side of these tasks. Should I write future programs using some construct from the TPL instead? Which one? Why?

As a temporary solution: After SHGetFolderPath I call GetShortPathName then I get path in msdos style: C:\DOCUME~1\Admin\5D29~1\4A66~1\60C2~1 Not really beautiful solution, but at least that is a valid path.

Threaded Python port scanner

I am having issues with a port scanner I'm editing to use threads. This is the basics for the original code: for i in range(0, 2000): s = socket(AF_INET, SOCK_STREAM) result = s.connect_ex((TargetIP, i)) if(result == 0) : c = "Port %d: OPEN\n" % (i,) s.close() This takes approx 33 minutes to complete. So I thought I'd thread it to make it run a little faster. This is my first threading project so it's nothing too extreme, but I've ran the following code for about an hour and get no exceptions yet no output. RESTful API: How to model JSON representation?

I am designing a RESTful API for a booking application. You can request a list of accommodations. And that's where I don't really know how to design the JSON represenation. This is my XML representation: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <accommodations> <accommodation> <name>...</name> <category>couch</category> </accommodation> <accommodation> <name>...</name> <category>room</category> </accommodation> <accommodations> My first try to convert this to JSON resulted in this output (1): { "0": { "name": "...", "category": "couch" }, "1": { "name": "...", "category": "room" } } But as I looked how others APIs did it, I found something looking more like this (2): [ { "name": "...", "category": "couch" }, { "name": "...", "category": "room" } ] I know version 1 is an object, and version 2 an array. But which one is better in this case?
