• Connecting my flex application to Restlet webservices

  Hi, I am doing some trial testing awith Amazon ec2 boxes, deploying flex apps running on top of restlet powered webservices. I have this problem - Everytime i deploy the app to the cloud, I'm having to hardcode the IP address of the server into the ActionScript/MXML files (http://72.93.48.39:8080/xxx/abc/) and for certain reasons, i am forced to choose a different IP everytime. and i think its really not the right way to deploy the application. I would like to know what other people do in such scenarios? On thinking about it, i thought i could make it pickup values from the HTMLVars of the HTML wrapper. but that again has to be edited everytime again and again. will it be possible to be able to supply these values : server's ip address, server's port number(in case its not 8080 on some machine) at build time? if so can anyone give me a barbones sample build.xml just as an example?

• binding to arraycollection does not work

  Hi, I am using flex SDK 3.5. I have model.as and in it i have an ArrayCollection (name it arr_mod) which is Bindable. From my mxml i link to this arr_mod in two ways: 1) in DataGrid i set dataprovider={arr_mode} ... 2) in Button i add new item to the arr_mod this way: 3) in textBox i want to add mx:TextBox text="{mySpecialCounterFunc(arr_mod)}" note that in the Script of mxml arr_mod is Bindable as well as in the class definition in model.as The problem is, that when clicking on button, mySpecialCounterFunc is not called! it should be called, since i use {} and this should listen to changes in arr_mod (a change that was made in the button should cause a new item to be added.. and than the listener to respond). While The DataGrid is updated correctly! Why??

• PHP can be exclusively accessed by SWF

  I'm not sure how to describe this, but basically I have a PHP class file: class HelloHello { public function getSomeData($input_parameter){ // code to retrieve data from the database } public function deleteSomeData($input_parameter){ // code to delete data from the database } } This class is on the server and is part of the backend that connects with a database, and it's meant to be accessed by the frontend SWF only (not to be directly accessed). I've setup Flex to read this class and access it. But how do I make sure that someone doesn't develop a script that can call this php file directly and access its methods? For example using a script to add data in a fast automated way, or use the delete method directly, ouch. Is this a legitimate concern, or this can't be done?

• Scaling larger Image problem.

  Hi, I m developing flex application, in which I want to Draw Image from User local hard-drive to the canvas of size 640x360. User can choose Image of bigger resolution & is scaled to Canvas size. But if user selected images of larger resolution like 3000x2000, the scaling take lot time & freezes the application until scale done. Is there any method to scale image faster or kind of threading can be done? • Flex 3.0 Drag and Drop

  Hi all! I have encountered a problem in a Flex application. I have implemented drag and drop support from a List to a Canvas, and I DragManagers doDrag() - with.a proxy-image. In my custom DragDrop event handler, i place a new item on the Canvas. I use the event.localX/localY to position the new item. It is working ok, but the problem is that I want the "new" image to appear exactly where the proxy-image is when i release the mouse button (x/y -wise). Can I somehow get the proxys X,Y location. I thought that DragManager would have a reference to it but I can´t find it. Thanks /C

• How to execute an Ant task only when source files have been modified?

  There must be an easy way to do this. I build a Flex app using ant that depends on a SWC library, which works fine except that it rebuilds the library whether it needs to or not. How do I tell ant to only run the task if any of the sources files of the library (*.as, *.mxml) are newer than the SWC? I've looked at <dependset but it only seems to delete files, not determine whether a task should be run or not. <depend seems to expect a one-to-one relationship between the source and target files rather than a one-to-many relationship -- I have many input files and one output file, but no intermediate object files. • Adding a red5 app in a multiuser website

  hi everybody, I have an mvc php website where users can publish their public information: http://www.example.com/foobar/profile. Beside this project, based on some red5 samples, I have an application (done with Flex) that sends audio: rtmp://server/sendAudio (very basic but works). I want to create for each subscribed on my website an admin part where can send an audio stream: http://admin.example.com/foobar. And, when someone goes on their public profile, they can listen to the streamed audio: http://www.example.com/foobar/profile). How can I use my red5/flash app dynamically with my php website so that my users can broadcast their proper canal? Do you have some experience to share ? Thank you, Regards.

• Why would bytesTotal increase in a AS3 preloader?

  I'm creating a custom preloader for a Flex app and have noticed the following behavior: when loading, the progress bar goes to 100%, then down then back up, and so on until the app is finished loading. When I put a trace in the dowloadprogress listener, I see that while the app is loading, both bytesLoaded and bytesTotal increase, but not necessarily at the same time. • How to handle right to left languages in Flash (pre version 10)?

  Hello, We are currently working with Flex creating a web application. We are having trouble taking Arabic text from the user and displaying correctly (like in a chat feature). While presumably Flash 10 will solve this problem, we don't want to force our users to upgrade. Flash flips the order of the sentence's words. so if I wrote something like "Hello World" in the text field, it will appear as "World Hello" in the chat area. Is there a standard way to work with Right to Left languages in Flash? *We currently flip the order of the words with a function, but it things get messed up when using English or special characters in the chat like :) or :D *

• Flash crash on long JSON load time

  I have a Flex program that gets a JSON array from a PHP script. The PHP script doesn't contain just a simple JSON array but it grabs data from Activecollab and do some work on the data before encoding the data. The first test involve a small JSON array that took a short time to encode by PHP. However, when I try to scale up the test, the Flash movie will crash trying to load the JSON data from PHP. There's no code difference between the tests, just the amount of data and amount of time it takes PHP to encode. Am I looking at a memory problem or a time out problem?

  Hi all I am using list component in flex & using custom itemRenderer i.e I have made a component named frameRenrer(there are two controls ImageControl and label control) where I set the image source and label text on creationComplete event.And I providing the data using dataProvider function in List component.But actually problem is that when I scroll this list only 4 items are displayed repeatedly and to check it I make a function on mouseOver of image control in this I am using Alert.show(data.label); then it shows the correct data but it is not displayed in the list.In data provider I am using ArrayCollection. What is the problem anyone????

• Flex Custom UIComponents

  I have created a graph component in AS3 which extends UIComponent. I created an mxml component which is just a Label. The idea is to use the label component to show the values on the graph when you hover over points. I have tried two approaches. Create the Label component using ClassFactory inside the graph so it gets created in the graph component and addChild is called there. The problem is it is always 0 in size. Create in main mxml file and pass in to graph using a setter, the sizing is perfect but the x an y dont relate to my graph :( I suppose its similar to flex and itemrenderers, but in my case i have a graph and another component which can be changed, at the moment it is just a Label. • Compiling CSS to SWF server side Java, What is the best practice?

  My project allows users to create custom css for our flex app. In regards to compiling the CSS into SWFs on the server side: Should I use the flex2.compiler.css.Compiler class in mxmlc-3.5.0.12683.jar? Or Should I invoke mxmlc from Runtime.getRuntime().exec()? The css.Compiler class is not very well documented. Does anyone have any examples that use this? For the Runtime exec method, what is the best way to package mxmlc into the maven build so its available to the server at runtime?

• DateTimeAxis - set Label to display Date + Time

  Hi, Is there a way in flex 3 chart component to display both the date and time using horizontal DateTimeAxis? Currently the DateTimeAxis element has an attribute dataunits which allows to set the value to any of "milliseconds|seconds|minutes|hours|days|weeks|months|years" but I want to display the label as "2009/09/15 06:00:00" which includes the day and the time too. • Is it reasonable to start using Google Maps for Flash rather than Javascript version?

  I am planning to build a web application highly based on Google Maps API. I am considering either using the Javascript version, or the Flash version. I would like to create an interface which will be quite rich. Should I go for JS version of the API or Flash one? Also I do not plan to purchase the Flash, so ideally I would like to use some free Flex SDK that supports ActionScript. What would you recommend? Is it more reasonable to use JS or maybe better use the Flash Version. What are the limitations, pros and cons?

• Context menu for loaded SWF

  I have a Flex app with a viewport that loads a series of other swfs. I would like to place a context menu over top of the SWFs when the user right-clicks. To that end, I have set up a fairly standard context menu where each item has a ContextMenuEvent.MENU_ITEM_SELECT event handler. One problem: The eventHandler never gets called. If I place the context-menu code anywhere else in the app, i.e. not on top of a loaded SWF, everything works fine. However, when I place the exact same code on the SWF viewport, the context menu items appear, but the eventHandlers are never called. Any ideas?

  HI, PHP problem here (I think): I've just created a Flex (Flash Builder) project with a datagrid linked to a database - the database is all utf8. When I run the project using the auto-generated code in flex4, the non-English part comes like ????? while the English part comes fine. The auto-generated PHP code uses mysqli. I've tried: $this->connection->set_charset('utf8'); or mysqli_query($this->connection,"SET NAMES utf8"); I also tried writing the code myself (I'm not a PHP guy): mysql_query("set names utf8"); was fine - but that's mysql and not mysqli (that's an "i" after the mysql) and I want to use the auto-generated code... any help is appreciated.

  Hi, I have three datagrids inside VBox container. Since I don't want scrollbar in my flex widget i am increasing the height of SWF through javascript, which increases with each addition of row in my datagrid. My query is how can I get the exact height of my VBox which is the parent element of datagrid. I am not able to get the height of VBox. I have tried to use measuredHeight,height with no success. • How can I replicate the functionality of the Flash Builder's release tool in ant?

  I want to build an ant script that does exactly the same compilation actions on a Flash Builder 4 (Gumbo) project as the Project->Export Release Build... menu item does. My ant-fu is reasonably strong, that's not the issue, but rather I'm not sure exactly what that entry is doing. Some details: I'll be using the 3.x SDK (say, 3.2 for the sake of specificity) to build this. I'll be building on a Mac, and I can happily use ant, make, or some weird shell script stuff if that's the way you roll. Any useful optimizations you can suggest will be welcome. The project contains a few assets, MXML and actionscript source, and a couple of .swcs that are built into the project (not RSL'd) Can someone provide an ant build.xml or makefle that they use to build a release .swf file from a similar Flex project?

  Hi, I'm loading a few huge images on my flex/as3 app, but I can't manage to catch the error when the flash player runs out of memory. Here is the what I was thinking might work (I use ???? because i dont know what to catch): try{ images = new Array(frames); for (var i:uint = 0; i < frames; i++){ imagesBA[i] = new BitmapData(width, height, false, 0x000000FF); } } catch(error:????){ Alert.show("Out of memory!"); } Any idea what ???? can be?   friends. I'm currently developing a flex mobile project. I currently need to load local javascript using stagewebview. Like: var str:String = '<head>'+ '<script src="myLocalJs.js"/>'+ '</head><body>...</body>'; webView:StageWebView = new StageWebView(); webView.loadString(str); Is there any way to load local javascript using StageWebView? I'm not expecting an answer like 'There is a project called StageWebViewBridge' since it does't have all the features I need. THX!!

• Checkbox Images in List

  It seems like it should be a simple concept. I need a vertical list. This list has an image with a checkbox and pathname of that image underneath it. The user should be able to check the checkboxes of the images they want to appear in their "shopping cart". The images, checkbox label, and list are populated by an XmlList. How can I do this in Flex 3.5 and Actionscript and have a button that when clicked, display a list of the checked items??
