• How to facilitate code reviews in a small team for embedded software?

  Short Question Does a cost-effective tool / workflow exist to facilitate code reviews in a small team? More specifically, a small team that relies on post-commit code reviews. Background Our team currently consists of 3 full time and 1 part time software engineers, with plans on hiring more in the near future. Due to our team size and volume of projects we all must juggle, the pre-commit workflow that major tools (such as Review Board and Code Collaborator) use is not obtainable for us right now. The best we can do at the moment is to perform post-commit reviews before major releases or as time permits. Nearly all of our projects are hosted on RepositoryHosting.com (which I highly recommend) and contain a mixture of SVN and GIT repositories. Current Thoughts Since I cannot find a tool that fits our needs right now, I am turning to TRAC that is built into our repository's site. At the moment we use TRAC to file tickets and track milestones, so to me this seems like a natural fit for code review results as well. The direction I am heading in right now is to use a spread sheet(s) to log all of the bugs and comments. Do some macro magic to get it in a format that I can use TRAC's import ticket method and use TRAC's ticketing system to create the action items / bug reports automatically. The auto ticket generation is darn near a must have, adding in bugs and comments one at a time from a web-gui is really painful. Secondary Question If this workflow makes sense, is there a good / standard template to use as a code review log?

• With which class to start Test Driven Development of card game application? And what would be the next 5 to 7 tests?

  I have started to write card game applications. Some model classes: CardSuit, CardValue, Card Deck, IDeckCreator, RegularDeckCreator, DoubleDeckCreator Board Hand and some game classes: Turn, TurnHandler IPlayer, ComputerPlayer, HumanPlayer IAttackStrategy, SimpleAttachStrategy, IDefenceStrategy, SimpleDefenceStrategy GameData, Game are already written. My idea is to create engine, where two computer players could play game and then later I could add UI part. Already for some time I'm reading about Test Driven Development (TDD) and I have idea to start writing application from scratch, as currently I have tendency to write not needed code, which seems usable in future. Also code doesn't have any tests and it is hard to add them now. Seems that TDD could improve all these issue - minimum of needed code, good test coverage and also could help to come to right application design. But I have one issue - I can't decide from where to start TDD? Should I start from bottom - Card related classes or somewhere on top - Game, TurnHandler, ... ? With which class you would start? And what would be the next 5 to 7 tests? (use the card game you know the best) I would like to start TDD with your help and then continue on my own!

• Giving PHP the permission to make a git pull request

  I would like to allow PHP to execute a Git pull command. But there are some problems with the user and permissions. How did you solve the problem? PHP runs as user www-data. Therefore I've changed the .git directory owner/group to www-data (chown www-data:www-data -R .git). As it is turned out later www-data has no SSH keys. Is it a good idea to give it one? If yes where to place? Or is it possible to allow it to use a specific key. Best regards, Bernd

• Linux - Scriptable email client?

  Hi, I'm writing a simple UI for the visually impaired using a speech synthesizer. I've looked all over the internet for an email client which I can script to fit these purposes but to no avail. I believe several CLI email clients(eg MUTT) allow sending emails with command line arguments only. But I've yet to find a client that can download the emails, decode them and then dump them to a text file. The best candidate so far seems to be mailx, but it seems like it needs quite a lot of babysitting to fit my needs. Any suggestions for scripting-friendly email clients? Am I missing something fundamental about MUTT? Are there any libraries/programs that help me decode the MIME encoding used in todays emails from a maildir? Should I just bite the bullet and write a script for mailx? Thanks in advance.

  Our office will be using Office 2011 for email contacts and calendar. Currently we are using apple mail/ical and address book. My primary concern is syncing calendars with google apps. That said our primary feature that we use google apps calendar for is sharing calendars. Best way to using office 2011... To sync calendars with an iPhone? To sync/share calendars between users? To sync contacts with an iphone? To sync/share contacts with between users? Users are on other computers and mostly work from home Needs to be fool proof once setup :-) I am not fond of the idea of syncing outlook with Mac address book and ical then to the iphone.

• Inserting HTML code with jquery

  One of our web applications is a page that takes in a serial number and various information is returned and displayed to the user. The serial is passed via AJAX, and based on the response, one of the following can happen - An error message is shown A new form replaces the previous form Now, the way I am handling this is to use jQuery to destroy (using $.remove()) the table that displayed the initial serial form, then I'm appending another html table that contains another form. Right now I am including that additional form as part of the html source, and just setting it to display:none, then using jQuery to show it when appropriate. However, I don't like this approach because if someone views source on the page, they can see that table html code that is not being displayed. My next thought would be to use AJAX to read in another HTML file, and append it that way. However, I am trying to keep down the number of files this project uses, and since most pages in our project will use AJAX, I could see a case where there are multiple files containing HTML snippets - and that feels sloppy to me. What is the best way to handle a case where multiple html elements are being shown and removed with jQuery?

• Some fun with RadGridView for Silverlight literally !

  April Fools' Day is a great excuse for me to do something funny with RadGridView. So todays post will have less geekness and more fun than usually.   Silverlight being a great platform and RadGridView being enormously flexible control provoked me to do something that you can not exactly call the typical Line-Off-Business application.   So enjoy this small  Pexeso game clone created with the help of RadGridView for Silverlight and some standard Silverlight re-styling techniques. The rules are simple : Try to open two identical cards at the same time. The goal of the game try to open all cards this way. My best score was 3:43 !  Will be glad if you share yours :) .   For the sake of geekness I will keep the tradition to share the sources. • TechEd 2010 Day Two – No SQL Server in Sight

  Today I worked the booth at TechEd 2010, manning the new “Surface” computer, which is just the coolest object on the planet. After that I didn’t attend a single SQL Server session – instead I’ve been frequenting SharePoint, Microsoft Office, and even the High-Performance Computing sessions. The reason is that I get really high quality SQL Server presentations at PASS, SQL Saturdays, and online from Microsoft and other vendors. While there are SQL Server sessions here (after all, I’m giving one of them!) I tend to try and see things that I don’t normally get to learn about. And the cross-pollination between those technologies and mine is fantastic.     I’ve even managed to go to an Entity Framework presentation for the developers. I actually have (a little) more respect for that technology – and I’ve modified my presentation to encompass more of that information. So whenever you have the chance, take a walk outside your comfort zone. • Oracle SPARC SuperCluster and US DoD Security guidelines

  I've worked in the past to help our government customers understand how best to secure Solaris.  For my customer base that means complying with Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) from the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA).  I recently worked with a team to apply both the Solaris and Oracle 11gR2 database STIGs to a SPARC SuperCluster.  The results have been published in an Oracle White paper. The SPARC SuperCluster is a highly available, high performance platform that incorporates: SPARC T4-4 servers Exadata Storage Servers and software ZFS Storage appliance InfiniBand interconnect Flash Cache  Oracle Solaris 11 Oracle VM for SPARC Oracle Database 11gR2 It is targeted towards large, mission critical database, middleware and general purpose workloads.  Using the Oracle Solution Center we configured a SSC applied DoD security guidance and confirmed functionality and performance of the system.  The white paper reviews our findings and includes a number of security recommendations.  In addition, customers can contact me for the itemized spreadsheets with our detailed STIG reports. Some notes: There is no DISA STIG  documentation for Solaris 11.  Oracle is working to help DISA create one using their new process. As a result, our report follows the Solaris 10 STIG document and applies it to Solaris 11 where applicable. In my conversations over the years with DISA Field Security Office they have repeatedly told me, "The absence of a DISA written STIG should not prevent a product from being used.  Customer may apply vendor or industry security recommendations to receive accreditation." I would like to disable his AD account, archive all his emails, keep his mailbox and prevent new emails from being sent to him. What's the "best practice" method of doing this? • Emulator PCSX Reloaded - Fullscreen not working on Unity

  I have an older PS1 console with a couple of games I bought some years ago. On my pc, I'm using PCSX Reloaded - the best PS1 emulators for Linux I found so far. But I'm having a little issue on Ubuntu 12.04 Precise. I'm using Unity 3D and I'm trying to run some of my original PS1 games on PCSX Reloaded. Everything works nicely, except for fullscreen. I toggle fullscreen and specify maximum resolution for my monitor, but on fullscreen mode, both left and top unity bars aren't getting hidden. I tried changing between other graphic modes like Gnome Classic and Gnome Classic w/o Effects. On both, PCSX shows bars in fullscreen mode, so it isn't an Unity-specific issue, but an emulator problem. It's a bit annoying play games this way, so basically I'm running games on window mode for now. I'm using default OpenGL graphic plugin on this emulator. I tried changing to X11 graphic plugin and fullscreen worked, but graphics on X11 plugin aren't as good as OpenGL one. Anyone know a way to get fullscreen working on PCSX using OpenGL plugin? Or maybe another graphic plugin w/ OpenGL support.

• On a Mac, how can I find all files on a NTFS partition that have the same name, given case *in*sensi

  Here's the deal, I have a huge mess of files on an external drive that is formatted as NTFS. I wish to copy all of these files onto my MacBook Pro. NTFS, like sane filesystems, is case sensitive. HFS is not. There is, somewhere in the mess of tens of thousands of files and directories, one or more 'duplicates' in the eyes of HFS. Theses are preventing me from copying the entire directory of data onto my mac. (MacOSX rather unhelpfully throws a general error explaining the problem, but not the exact file. It also doesn't give you an option to skip) What is the best approach to solve this? Does anyone know a tool that can find files and directories that have the same case-insensitive name?

• What stands out on a Juniors CV

  Hi all, I am looking for advice, hopefully from people more experienced that me. I am going to start applying for junior positions for .net development in the summer. At the moment the only thing on my CV is a project I have done for Windows Phone 7 called sprout sms. It allows the user to send webtext as provided by Irish Operators. The app is doing well and is top ten in my local marketplace (Ireland). By trade I am a salesman and that is the extent of most of my employment. I haven't been to college and due to financial commitments I would not be able to go down the road of full time education. I have kept up to date with various .net related tech in a junior capacity and am looking to now change careers. What I am look to see is what stands out on a juniors CV. My lack of education stands against me so I am looking to offset this with practical experience. I am open to all suggestions and from the end of this month I am free to pursue "notches" which will make my CV stand out. So in short if you where hiring a Junior, what would you like to see that would make you take a second look or request an interview? NOTE: I do fear this is a subjective subject, rather than debate what is the best items to have on a Juniors CV I would like to concentrate on what info you would give to a junior who is looking to apply for a job this year. • Re-Initialize RAID-0 in software after card failure

  I'm working on a Friend's WD MyBook "1TB" HDD that is not mounting. When I got in to it, I discovered that it is really 2 500GB HDD's set up as RAID-0. It appears that the drives themselves are fine, but that the logic board has failed. My questions is this: can I re-initialize the RAID-0 using software RAID so that I can recover the data to another drive? If so, how and which software RAID would be best (Preferably open source. any platform OK).

• Cloning hard drive -- data, operating system settings, everything

  I am using Windows XP. My hard drive (Seagate 160gig Barracuda) is about to fail. Its already developed bad sectors and it seems to get worse everyday. Data transfer mode is down to PIO mode 2, chkdsk runs every now and then, registry and important windows files get corrupted and I spend 30-60 minutes running chkdsk /f /r from the recovery console. I've got a replacement (Seagate 5000gig Barracuda) and now i want to transfer each and every thing on to the new drive. I don't want to go through windows and software installation, I spent ages getting all those software installed and configured on that hard drive. Need advice: whats the best way to transfer everything onto the new drive so that it behaves just like the old one. And are there any "gotchas".

• Can One Get a Solid Programming Foundation Without Going To College/University?

  First, I have already searched the site and read all the previous "self-taught vs. college" topics. The majority of the answers defended that going to college was the best choice, for two main reasons: Going to college gives you the paper, which is essential to landing jobs, especially in tough economic times. Going to college gives you a solid programming base, teaching you the principles that will be essential regardless of the language/path you take after. Here comes my question: I am not worried about reason 1 at all, because I already have my own company (I build websites/ do affiliate marketing) and a stable financial situation, so I am pretty sure I won't need to look around for a job. I am worried about reason 2 though. That is, I want to make sure I'll have as solid a programming foundation as anyone else out there, and I am wondering if that is possible with self-learning. Suppose I take my time to study the very basics, like discrete maths, algorithm design, programming logic, computer architecture, Assembly, C programming, databases and data structures - mostly using books,online resources and lots of coding. Say I spend 1-2 years covering those basics. Do you think my foundation would be solid, or still lack in comparison to someone who went to college?

• Inconsistent DNS report results on different websites

  I am checking my server dns setting on different websites. intodns,dnssy,dnscog, but on all the websites i get different results. Some say my mail server settings are not good, some say i have no A records for my NS records. Only on dnssy everything looks to be ok. Should i just trust the website with the best results, or what should i do? How does this sort of inconsistency occur in the first place. I am new to servers and dns, and this makes it very misleading.

• What's the easiest way to migrate one Mac OS X volume to another

  I want to move a volume from a smaller drive to a larger unformatted one. What is the best way to achieve this? Ideally I'd like the new volume to have the same name as the older volume as it contains user accounts, and is a destination of various symlinks that I have on other volumes. Update: I used Carbon Copy Cloner in the end and it worked perfectly. I was able to simply rename the new volume in Finder to the same name as the old volume and then powered down and removed the old drive on which the volume lived. When I restarted, the new volume seamlessly worked in place of the old volume.

• Hosting provider that allows you to host your own VM image?

  I've already looked at the 'Best Hosted VM Provider' question and checked the recommendations there, but I seem to have slightly odd requirements. Basically, I am looking for a host that allows me to host a VM image I supply (FreeBSD, which most of the suggested hosters don't support, they only seem to support various Linuxes) instead of one of their standard images. I'm a long time BSD user and have had colo BSD servers in the past so I'm pretty sure that i don't need much in the way of software support, but I'd basically like to run my server on managed hardware without having to rent the whole server. For the usage I have that would way OTT as we're talking a couple of small apps with very few users, a couple of blogs and (most importantly) email hosting for about 6-10 domains with moderate traffic levels. Oh, and reliability trumps cost to a certain extent.

I have read the documentation and installed the modules, but I am unsure how I have to configure the proxy's according to http://technet.microsoft.com/de-de/library/ee126142(en-us,WS.10).aspx - as a proxy or reverse proxy and how I minimize the bandwidth needs between origin server and proxy's. What is the best way to realize my setup? Any short how-tos? How can I announce all players to use the proxy? Route all rtsp/mms/http-requests through my proxy? Announce the proxy with DHCP-releases? Thanks!
