• Port forwarding to asp.net development server

  I have configured my router so that I can access my localhost from internet. But I can't manage to port forward it to asp.net development server. In router's port forwarding I did the same thing as for the localhost but only changed port number so that it is the same as the one that is assigned to my application, but this doesn't work. • Networking switch setup

  I have two 48 port gigabit netgear switches with 2 SFP ports each (i also have two Mini-GBIC copper transceiver modules) Is it best to set the ports up by using the built in ports (ie plug port 1 of switchB into port 48 of switchA and port1 of switchA into the router) or is there an advantage to using the mini-gbic? • How can I forward all web traffic from my Cisco ASA 5100 to a checkpoint firewall?

  Hi, I currently have two Cisco ASA 5100 routers setup with a site-to-site VPN at different physical locations. They are successfully configured so that all traffic at our remote site is forwarded over this VPN tunnel to our router here, which is fine, however I need the web traffic that comes here to then be forwarded onto our Check Point firewall router. • how to broadcast a PXE server like Trinity Rescue Kit

  I would like to set up a portable PXE server for diagnostic purposes. The issue is that I won't always have access to the DHCP server, or the router itself (sometimes a home router) doesn't have an easily accessible place to set the servername/file for broadcast. I know that Trinity Rescue Kit is able to broadcast its PXE server without its own DHCP server. Can anyone point me in the direction to set this up on my own (without Trinity)? Thanks.

• faking NAT with a VMware distributed switch across multiple hosts

  Have a VM that will act as the router, and will be connected to both networks (NAT + 'real'). I spread the distributed switch across the hosts, although any VM that is not on the same physical host as the router/dhcpd simply doesn't get an IP. So its obviously my dvSwitch config. Has anyone achieved a NAT solution using a dvSwitch before that they could share?! Thanks.

• Is Samba Server what I'm looking for, and if so, what do I need? (currently on DD-WRT Micro)

  I am really confused as to what Samba actually does and how it works. Here's what I'm hoping it does: I set up a Samba server on my LAN, and everyone will be able to see each other's shared files and swap them. But some of the documentation makes it sound like it will just allow Mac/Linux computers to see Windows computers. Other bits of the documentation make it sound more like a local server, where a Linux machine would install Samba and they would see everyone and be visible to everyone, but that won't change if anybody else can see each other. While still other things I've read make it seem more like a file-server, where everyone sees each other but file transfers are not peer-to-peer but instead need a host disk for files to act as go between. So, assuming I'm even in the right ballpark of what Samba does in terms of my goal of total cross-visibility on the network, I am left with needing to know what I'd need to set up the server and whether it can be done and is worth it... DD-WRT's article on Samba is a bit ambiguous. One second it sounds as if I can run the server on micro as long as it's set up on a usb drive, but then it also sounds like micro can't run it at all, etc. If I can run it from a usb-connected drive, I still need to know if the files are actually stored on that drive. The dd-wrt article mentions: You can run a Samba server on your main computer and run a client on your router (thus gaining writable storage for the router) or you can use Samba to share a drive connected (typically by USB) to the router among all the computers connected to your network. That one part "to share a drive...among all the computers" makes it sound like the only benefit I get from Samba is a share drive that any OS on the network can see, but they still won't see each other. But I'm very hopeful I'm misreading this. If the computers can see each other but still need the disk, how much space is generally a good idea? I'm basing this on the idea that the drive is a temporary store point. Obviously I'd have to get a drive big enough to store everything people wanted to share if the drive is a full-on file server. If I do have this all wrong, is there any software that achieves what I have in mind? Something that connects to the main router to bridge all clients?

• Only a Macs can connect to WIFI with WPA-Personal security on.

  I have an odd issue with a Netgear WIFI router, 4 computers, 2 pc laptops with XP and 7 installed, one macbook pro and one older mac mini. With security off everything can connect to the wifi. With WPA-Security on only the macs can connect to the wifi. I've reset the Netgear router, done everything again from scratch, no deal. The PCs just can't connect.

• ClearOS transparent firewall and web proxy mode possible?

  In other firewall software packages I have seen the ability and am hoping it is possible with ClearOS to put it in to transparent or bridged mode where the device sits physically between the client workstations and the internet router, but is the client workstation has the internet router address as it's gateway, not the clearos machine. The client workstation would also not have to enter an http proxy address as that would be transparent. Is this possible and how do you configure ClearOS this way? Thanks!

  I have SQL Server 2005 operating on a remotely hosted server and wish to access it from my own machine using management studio The firewall on the remote server is allready setup to allow all traffic from my external IP - and that works great. However I have a load balancing router that has a second line attached to it - unfortunatly the second line has a dynamic external IP. I need to therefore set up a rule in the router to always send data from Management studio on the first line - but I need to know the port numbers. Can you advise?

• lightweight access point?

  Im moving from an all in one to a router + access point. In doing googling and reasearch and talking to friends I ended up with router - cisco rv016 wifi access point - airnet 1142 lightweight access point. (lap1142n) In trying to set all this up and reading I think I bought the wrong access point. It seems I need a wireless controller? Can someone confirm that I should not have bought the lightweight one?

  Currently I have an unmanaged POE switch connected to a Linksys router. I am thinking of upgrading my POE switch to a gigabit POE switch, the only problem is that the switch that I want to get is a managed switch. So here's my question: with a managed switch, can I still connect all of my devices to it and have the devices request IP addresses from the DHCP server within the Linksys router or will the devices request IPs from the managed switch since I believe the switch has its own DHCP server as well?

  I am using Cisco DPC3825 DOCSIS 3.0 Gateway as my modem and router right now and it works fine on a computer directly connected to Cisco DPC3825 DOCSIS 3.0 Gateway with wire but I am getting very low/poor signal strength on my wireless computer due to which I am looking to install DLink DIR-625 as my router but because when I connect Cisco DPC3825 DOCSIS 3.0 Gateway with DLink DIR-625 and connect my computer with wire to DIR-625 then I don’t get any Internet.(I get Internet when I connect my computer with wire with Cisco DPC3825 DOCSIS 3.0 and I know there is nothing wrong with DLink DIR-625).

Also local-as prepending may or may not happen based on configurations; for example "no-prepend" in cisco. Now my question is, is there any RFC which which standardises this Dual-As support?? Which provides guidelines on whether or not to prepend the "local-as" to As-Path attributes in the Bgp updates ?

  If I make a VPN connection to a server (say myvpn.com; assume this server is not behind any router/firewall) via a TUN device and open a port (say 5555), will someone else be able to connect to me via myvpn.com:5555? If not, is there a tunneling software that does exactly this in a transparent manner? i.e. run any TCP/UDP-based server instance behind a router without NAT using another remote server.

I would like to share files locally on this network but I can't access the laptop's which connect wirelessly. I have shared folders on each computer but I would like to know if local file sharing is possible as all the computers utimately connect to the same router. All computers are running Windows 7.

• FTP server questions

  I'm currently trying to set up a home FTP server using debian and proftpd and I've run into a problem that has me confused. I have most things set up already, I believe, but I cannot access my ftp server using my external ip. I've forwarded the correct port on my router and I've checked http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ to be sure that it is, in fact, opened. I've used telnet locally on my server to check that the port accepts connections. I am able to use ftp via LAN. But, I still cannot access anything externally. I'm thinking that there's still some router configuration to be done in order to fix this, such as routing all connections on my ftp port to my server via the internal ip, but I can't find any option on my router to do this. Is this a necessary step? There is an option to use DMZ hosting, but I'd rather avoid it if possible. I can provide additional information as requested, please let me know any information that you think could help at all. Thanks. -Brad PS - I have a Telus Actiontec Modem/Router Update - !! Trying my ftp server out at work, worked! I guess I did set it up correctly after all. What is confusing me, though, is why doesn't the server allow me to connect locally anymore? That seems very weird to me. Also, I don't really understand why I am denied outright if I attempt to connect from the same network using the external address. I'll look into it more when I get home, but thank you guys for your help. Update 2 - I found the problem with not being able to connect locally anymore. I was setting the masquerade address to my external IP and for some reason that was causing it to hang on MLSD when I connected using my LAN address. I've removed the masquerade address and I'm going to check if I need it at work tomorrow. I'll update this page if I find anything.

• How would I isolate one networked PC to LAN only?

  I would like to have one of my PCs available to the rest of my home network for file sharing and VNC access, but I want to block any Internet traffic going to and from the PC. In other words, I want all local PCs I have connected to the router functioning as any normal LAN would, but when it comes to the Internet I want one particular PC to be "safe" from the Internet.   I have reasonably many electronic gadgets that can go LAN or WI-FI. But how do you share and/or syncronize all your files among them? Well, between my laptops and my desktop I use Dropbox. A nice way to share files among computers. But what if your HDD on your laptop is not large enough to carry music, pictures and films. Normally you would buy an extern USB HDD and store them there, but then you cannot reach the files from other computers which are not connected to the USB device. Many would say I should use a solution like a cloud with a disc station or something like that. But my needs are follows: A mass storage which can be reached among devices (laptops, desktops, iPhone, Android phone, XBox or Playstation). Has low power requirements and is silent. Can be reached inside home and it would be nice if it could be reached outside home as well. Cheap I have looked around and I have found an wireless router which can share a USB device: D-Link Wireless N HD Media Router. I thought it would be an interesting solution for a simple local cloud solution. D-Link uses a little program called SharePort Plus which mount the USB device to your computer. Unfortunately is the transfer rate to the USB storage device rather disappointing. The transfer rate was 5.8 Mbps even though the distance between the laptop and the router was 2 meter. The same is happening when I use cable from the computer to the router. Another thing is that SharePort Plus only allows one computer be connected to the device at a time. The last thing was something I could live with. I have search on the Internet for other solutions and found this video from Synology. I'm not sure if their solution is the right one. I think a disc station connected to my home LAN could the right solution. What have you done in your home to store and share files among your computers and game consoles?
