What is the significance of these different width, height and resolution parameters?

An image with a pixel resolution of 640 x 480 has additional dimension and resolution parameters according to exiftool. I'm unsure what they mean. Why are the X / Y Resolution parameters the same?Should they not reflect the pixel dimensions of the image? What does Exif Image Size mean and how is it different from the pixel dimensions? What is the focal plane? Why is my /dev/random so slow when using dd?

I am trying to semi-securely erase a bunch of hard drives. The following is working at 20-50Mb/s dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda But dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sda seems not to work. Also when I type dd if=/dev/random of=stdout It only gives me a few bytes regardless of what I pass it for bs= and count= Am I using /dev/random wrong? What other info should I look for to move this troubleshooting forward? Is there some other way to do this with a script or something like makeMyLifeEasy | dd if=stdin of=/dev/sda Or something like that...

Would SSD drives benefit from a non-default allocation unit size?

The default allocation unit size recommended when formatting a drive in our current set-up is 4096 bytes. I understand the basics of the pros and cons of larger and smaller sizes (performance boost vs. space preservation) but it seems the benefits of a solid state drive (seek times massively lower than hard disks) may create a situation where a much smaller allocation size is not detrimental. Were this the case it would at least partially help to overcome the disadvantage of SSD (massively higher prices per GB). Is there a way to determine the 'cost' of smaller allocation sizes specifically related to seek times? Or are there any studies or articles recommending a change from the default based on this newer tech? (Assume the most average scattering of sizes program files, OS files, data, mp3s, text files, etc.)

Using DateTime in a SqlParameter for Stored Procedure, format error

I'm trying to call a stored procedure (on a SQL 2005 server) from C#, .NET 2.0 using DateTime as a value to a SqlParameter. The SQL type in the stored procedure is 'datetime'. Executing the sproc from SQL Management Studio works fine. But everytime I call it from C# I get an error about the date format. When I run SQL Profiler to watch the calls, I then copy paste the exec call to see whats going on. These are my observations and notes about what I've attempted: 1) If I pass the DateTime in directly as a DateTime or converted to SqlDateTime, the field is surrounding by a PAIR of single quotes, such as @Date_Of_Birth=N''1/8/2009 8:06:17 PM'' 2) If I pass the DateTime in as a string, I only get the single quotes 3) Using SqlDateTime.ToSqlString() does not result in a UTC formatted datetime string (even after converting to universal time) 4) Using DateTime.ToString() does not result in a UTC formatted datetime string. 5) Manually setting the DbType for the SqlParameter to DateTime does not change the above observations. So, my questions then, is how on earth do I get C# to pass the properly formatted time in the SqlParameter? Surely this is a common use case, why is it so difficult to get working? Update and Success First and foremost, thank you everyone for the answers. I post this for the sake of completeness and accuracy on SO - because I certainly do not do it for my pride... I had copy/pasted the code above after the request from below. I trimmed things here and there to be concise. Turns out my problem was in the code I left out, which I'm sure any one of you would have spotted in an instant. I had wrapped my sproc calls inside a transaction. Turns out that I was simply not doing transaction.Commit()!!!!! I'm ashamed to say it, but there you have it. I still don't know what's going on with the syntax I get back from the profiler. A coworker watched with his own instance of the profiler from his computer, and it returned proper syntax. Watching the very SAME executions from my profiler showed the incorrect syntax. It acted as a red-herring, making me believe there was a query syntax problem instead of the much more simple and true answer, which was that I need to commit the transaction! I marked an answer below as correct, and threw in some up-votes on others because they did, after all, answer the question, even if they didn't fix my specific (brain lapse) issue. I'm trying to transform a datetime to a date format yyyy-MM-dd, because I'm using the xsd.exe tool the xs:date datatypes are automatically changed into a datetime datatype, because there is no type in the .NET Framework that matches the type xs:date completely. I am attempting to create an enrollment process similar to SO's: route to an OpenID provider provider returns the user's information to the UsersController (a guess) UsersController creates user, then routes to the ProfilesController's new or edit action. For now, I'm simply trying to create the user, then route to the ProfilesController's new or edit action (not sure which I should be using). I'm having two problems: When saving an edit to the User model, the UsersController attempts to route to http://localhost:3000/users/1/profile.%23%3Cprofile:0x10438e3e8%3E, instead of http://localhost:3000/users/1/profile When the new-profile form is being rendered, it throws an error that reads: undefined method `user_profiles_path' for # Is it better to create a blank profile when the user is created (in the UsersController), then edit it OR follow the rest-ful convention of creating the profile in the ProfilesController (as I have done)? What am I missing? I did review Associating Two Models in Rails (user and profile), but it didn't address my needs. Thanks for your time.

Would like that the selected item from dropdown and Firstname, Phone, Email, are all required. Is the timeago date format appropiate for a website?

We're building a website for a startup and we encourage using the "timeago" format for displaying dates (i.e. less than a minute ago, about 5 minutes ago, about a month ago, etc.) but the client argues that it's not used in the US, that people are just not used to it. I can make a list of hundreds of sites using it, but of course, I'm a geek. So in adition to the main question, what are the pros and cons of the "timeago" date format?

How do I rip a dvd including menus and extras to a menu driven divx file (or any lossy format that supports menus)?

I am asking exactly this question for the same reason, but would like to archive dvds as small, low quality video, while preserving the menu choosing experience. I would like to rip my dvds to something that has the same menus but whose video is in a much more compressed format. I do not want to copy a dvd to an .iso image. How can this be done in the most automatic (hopefully CLI) way possible? Any format is fine so long as playback on linux is possible.

SEO: Firefox addon/plugin to see Google results with a position number?

Do you know a Firefox addon that adds postion number to Google/Yahoo results. When I do SEO report for www.some-site.com by keyphrase "some-keyphrase" I usually show results in blocks of 100 results per page. Then uisng browser find box I search for "some-site.com", if found in page I see its position, but I have to count by hand the number of results before (or after) it to know the exact position number. It would be handful a simple addon that adds a number positioning before each result like: 1. Result blah blah Snippet... url 2. Result blah blah Snippet... url etc.

How do you edit the "Preferred Format" settings in Rhythmbox?

In Rhythmbox's Preferences, you can change the "Preferred Format" for Music to MPEG Layer 3 Audio, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, or MPEG 4 Audio. However, despite there being a Settings button, it does not become enabled for any of these choices. (I have installed all of the gstreamer plugins, but this has made no difference.) So how can you change the "Preferred Format", for example to change the bit rate or the quality setting?

Analytics - Total events divided by number of unique pages?

I am using Google Analytics events to track keywords on my articles - not necessarily the best system I know but there are too many for variables I can't easily change it right now - and I would like to be able to see how popular each keyword is by dividing the number of page views with a keyword by the number of unique pages. Is there a/what is the best way of doing this? EDIT FOR CLARITY I currently have a system set up where every time somebody loads an article an event is fired for each of the tags/keywords used, with the keyword being the label. I can currently view my view count for each of the keywords by looking at the total events for each label, however I would like to be able to see which keywords are the most popular by dividing the number of times the event has been fired by the the number of different pages it has been fired from.

I am getting the above error in IIS 6.0 now when I browse my C# / SQL web application. This was built in VS 2008 and SS 2008 on a 32-bit XP OS. The application was working before I added Login controls to it. However, this is my first time configuring Login/password controls so I am probably missing something really basic. The Network Service account has SELECT, EXECUTE, INSERT, UPDATE access to this database. But one problem I see is that all of the tables in this database are empty except for aspnet_SchemaVersions, which just has 2 records (common and membership). Is this right? I added users and roles via ASP.NET Configuration wizard, and I believe I set this up correctly since I followed the Microsoft tutorial at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms998347.aspx. But now I need a regex expression with a unknown size of numbers in the bracket .
