  • Migrating VB6 to HTML5 is not a fiction - Customer success story

    All of you VB developers in the present or past would probably find it hard to believe that the old VB code can be migrated and modernized into the latest .NET based HTML5 without having to rewrite the application. But we have been working on such tools for the past couple of years and already have several real world applications that were fully 'transposed' from VB6. The solution is called Instant CloudMove and its main tool is called the TranspositionStudio. It is a unique solution that relies on the concept of transposition. Transposition comes from mathematics and music and refers to exchanging elements while everything else remains the same or moving an element as is from one environment to another. This means that we are taking the source code and put it in a modern technological environment with relatively few adjustments.The concept is based on a set of Mapping Expressions which are basically links between an element in the source environment and one in the target environment that has the same functionality. About 95% of the code is usually mapped out-of-the-box and the rest is handled with easy-to-use mapping tools designed for Visual Studio developers providing them with a familiar environment and concepts for completing the mapping and allowing them to extend and customize existing mapping expressions. The solution is also based on a circular workflow that enables developers to make any changes as required until the result is satisfying.As opposed to existing migration solutions that offer automation are usually a “black box” to the user, the transposition concept enables full visibility, flexibility and control over the code and process at all times allowing to also add/change functionalities or upgrade the UI within the process and tools.This is exactly the case with our customer’s aging VB6 PMS (Property Management System) which needed a technological update as well as a design refresh. The decision was to move the VB6 application which had about 1 million lines of code into the latest web technology. Since the application was initially written 13 years ago and had many upgrades since the code must be very patchy and includes unused sections. As a result, the company Mihshuv Group considered rewriting the entire application in Java since it already had the knowledge. Rewrite would allow starting with a clean slate and designing functionality, database architecture, UI without any constraints. On the other hand, rewrite entitles a long and detailed specification work as well as a thorough QA and this translates into a long project with high risk and costs.So the company looked for a migration solution as an alternative; the research lead to Gizmox and after examining the technology it was decided to perform a hybrid project which would include an automatic transposition of the core of the VB6 application (200,000 lines of code) while they redesigning the UI, adding new functionality, deleting unused code and rewriting about 140 reports with Crystal Reports will be done manually using Visual WebGui development tools.The migration part of the project was completed in 65 days by 3 developers from Mihshuv Group guided by Gizmox migration experts while the rewrite and UI upgrade tasks took about the same. So in only a few months period Mihshuv Group generated an up-to-date product, written in the latest Web technology with modern, friendly UI and improved functionality.   • XNA WP7 Texture memory and ContentManager

    I'm trying to get my WP7 XNA game's memory under control and under the 90MB limit for submission. One target I identified was UI textures, especially fullscreen ones, that would never get unloaded. So I moved UI texture loads to their own ContentManager so I can unload them. However, this doesn't seem to affect the value of Microsoft.Phone.Info.DeviceExtendedProperties.GetValue("ApplicationCurrentMemoryUsage"), so it doesn't look like the memory is actually being released. Example: splash screens. In Game.LoadContent(): Application.Instance.SetContentManager("UI"); // set the current content manager for (int i = 0; i < mSplashTextures.Length; ++i) { // load the splash textures mSplashTextures[i] = Application.Instance.Content.Load<Texture2D>(msSplashTextureNames[i]); } // set the content manager back to the global one Application.Instance.SetContentManager("Global"); When the initial load is done and the title screen starts, I do: Application.Instance.GetContentManager("UI").Unload(); The three textures take about 6.5 MB of memory. Before unloading the UI ContentManager, I see that ApplicationCurrentMemoryUsage is at 34.29 MB. After unloading the ContentManager (and doing a full GC.Collect()), it's still at 34.29 MB. But after that, I load another fullscreen texture (for the title screen background) and memory usage still doesn't change.   • WPF animation: binding to the "To" attribute of storyboard animation.

    Hi, I'm trying to create a button that behaves similarly to the "slide" button on the iPhone. I have an animation that adjusts the position and width of the button, but I want these values to be based on the text used in the control. Currently, they're hardcoded. If I bind the values to an ActualWidth of an element in the ControlTemplate, the control comes up as a blank checkbox (my base class). However, I'm binding to the same ActualWidths in the ControlTemplate itself without any problems. Just seems to be the CheckBox.Resources that have a problem with it.   • WPF DataContext does not refresh the DataGrid using MVVM model

    Project Overview I have a view which binds to a viewmodel containing 2 ObserverableCollection. The viewmodel constructor populates the first ObserverableCollection and the view datacontext is collected to bind to it through a public property called Sites. Later the 2ed ObserverableCollection is populated in the LoadOrders method and the public property LoadFraudResults is updated for binding it with datacontext. I am using WCF to pull the data from the database and its getting pulled very nicely. But, when I call BindItemsSource again to repopulate the obseravablecollection based on changed selected combo value via cmbWebsite_SelectionChanged, the observalblecollection gets populated with new value and LoadFraudResults property in viewmodule is populated with new values; but when i call the datacontext to rebind the datagrid,the datagrid does not reflect the changed values. In other words the datagrid doesnot get changed when the datacontext is called the 2ed time in BindItemsSource method of the view. manageFraudOrderViewModel.LoadOrders(website); this.DataContext = manageFraudOrderViewModel; manageFraudOrderViewModel values are correct but the datagrid is not relected with changed values.   • SharePoint: You cannot grant limited access permission level

    In my team, we implemented some UI to set user access rights (assign/revoke permission levels) on a certain SharePoint list. The UI supplies a "undo" feature: If you change the rights over the UI, you can restore the rights the user had before by clicking "undo". Now there is a problem if the user had the "Limited Access" permission level: This permission level is removed when you do a change over the UI. When trying to Undo, the permission level should be added again, which leads to a You cannot grant a user the limited access permission level. I've read that SharePoint grants that right automatically when a user gets access to some entity beneath the site. Still I can revoke the right manually, but then I cannot re-grant it. Is there a proper way I could work around that? My thoughts: Did I get it right that this "limited access" is granted by SharePoint on the site level only? So, do all the lists beneath the site only contain that permission level "accidentally" because they inherit it? Does that permission level have any effect at all on a list, or does it only apply to the site itself? So, would it be save to just remove it from a list and do not add it anymore when the user clicks "undo", since it has no effect anyway? (My UI always works on list / list item level, never on the whole site/web).

    Hi All, I have an app, inside that an UIViewController is attached on the UIWindow. on the view of UIViewController, i have added a button and a uiview_1 of size 100x80. this uiview_1 contains another uiview_2 as subview of same size and this uiview_2 contains a UIImageView or a UIlable at runtime (both UIImageView and UIlable are userinteraction enabled) now on the touch/click of UIImageView, i want to show a new view using presentModalViewController, the problem is the view is shown and using back button on the navigation bar i come to the previous/main screen. here the problem come in picture, now i am unable to touch the button or the UIImageView. both are not responding, but app is not crashed and nor frozen. what is wrong in that?     Hello, probably I don't understand the layout properties of TableLayout yet. It doesn't seem to be possible to achieve such a flexible table like in HTML, because there are no cells.     Hi, I'm using this for the very first time to do some quick prototyping (using sketchflow). I have a simple dialog window that I want to show when a button it pressed and then hide when a button (in the dialog, like an "OK" button) is pressed. If someone could just point me in the direction of a simple tutorial on how to do this I'd be happy, or even if you have a simple example you can post here that would be great (I've been trying to google this forever!). I can tell you what I have tried (although obviously it doesn't work) Created a user control, called it "MyDialog". That user control is a simple box which is the bit of gui I want to overlay when the user clicks a button. In that user control I gave it two states "Show" and "Hide". The "Hide" state has all visability to the elements in this user control set to none and "Show" shows everything Created a button in my main screen. That button I gave a it a behaviour "ActivateStateAction". In the properties of that behaviour I set the TargetScreen to be "MyDialog" and the TargetState to be "Show". (I also set the target screen to be MyprojectName.MyProjectNameScreens.MyDialog, that doesn't work either)

    Hi, The asp.net web application I'm working on is written in asp.net 3.5, the web app solution is upgraded from VS 2008 (don't know if that matter). The solution had javascript in the aspx files before I moved the javascript to external files. Now what I have done is to set all the javascript files to be embedded resource (except the jquery.js file) and I want to minify them when building for release by using the MS Ajax Minifier. I want to use the minified javascript files when I'm in the RELEASE mode and when I'm in DEBUG mode I want to use the "normal" versions. My problem now is that I'm unable to debug the javascript code in debug mode. When I set a break point a javascript function, VS is not breaking at all when the function is executed.     HI, I am trying to call a method defined in flash object from javascript (firefox-3.0/Linux) and getting the exception: "NPMethod called on non- NPObject wrapped JSObject". If I use eval on window.document.flash_object.func() it throws "NPMethod called on non-NPObject wrapped JSObject". Where as, if I define a javascript function in side the page as given below: function myFunc() { return flash_object.func(); } and later do a eval of window.document.myFunc() it works fine. I am running the two evals through a test framework called Selenium. [eval(window.document.flash_object.func()) and eval(window.document.myFunc())]. The issues seems to be issue with invoking the flash-object method without passing 'this' reference.     I have a UITableViewController. I want a "toolbar-ish" component at the bottom. I started by using a background image and a button. In interface builder, I added them to the bottom of the iPhone screen. The problem I ran into was that the background image and button scrolled with the table. I obviously need this fixed at the bottom. Not finding too much direction online, I decided to customize a UIToolbar to look how I want since the position is fixed by default. In my initWithNibName for my UITableViewController, I have: UIImage *shuffleButtonImage = [UIImage imageNamed:@"shuffle_button.png"]; NSArray* toolbarItems = [NSArray arrayWithObjects: [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithImage:shuffleButtonImage style:UIBarButtonItemStylePlain target:self action:@selector(push:)], nil]; [toolbarItems makeObjectsPerformSelector:@selector(release)]; self.toolbarItems = toolbarItems; The problem I am running into now is that the "shuffleButtonImage" is not showing up properly. The shape of the button shows up fine but it is colored white and therefore does not look like the image. Does anyone know why a "white image" would be showing instead of the actual image? Also does it sound like a good idea to customize a UIToolbar or is there a simple way to ensure a fixed position "toolbar-ish" component. To reiterate - my "toolbar-ish" component only needs to be one button at the button of my UITableView. The single button has a gradient color background that I create with an image.

  • iPhone TableView alternative options for Check Mark Accessory

    I'm looking for the best approach to this problem. In my tableview I have a list of options from which you can select one and only one. The problem is the selection to choose is not obvious without displaying more details on the option. If I use the disclosure indicator or button for the more detail, I lose the checkmark functionality. In searching around I see some have used the cell Image as a work around. I see others instead of using the standard disclosure button have created custom disclosure button looking like a checkmark. Haven't seen this one but is it viable (HIG) to add a button in the cell ('more info') to launch the next tableview. My thought was to use a disclosure indicator and on the second view in the navigation bar (where the edit button usually is) add a 'selectMe' button. I think I am probably manage to code either of the above, am just asking for information on what is the best (HIG) way. Example Option 1 Option 2 Option 3 (x) Option 4 Where x is the checked one But in order to know which is the best choice you need to see Option 3 (Header) Option 3-a Option 3-b Option 3-c Option 3-d Where even at this level option 3-c might have additional information.   • UIButton: how to center an image and a text using imageEdgeInsets and titleEdgeInsets?

    Hello, guys. If I put only an image in a button and set the imageEdgeInsets more close to the top, the image stays centered and all works as expected: [button setImage:image forState:UIControlStateNormal]; [button setImageEdgeInsets:UIEdgeInsetsMake(-15.0, 0.0, 0.0, 0.0)]; If I put only a text in a button and set titleEdgeInsets more close to the bottom, the text stays centered and all works as expected: [distractionButton setTitle:title forState:UIControlStateNormal]; [distractionButton setTitleEdgeInsets:UIEdgeInsetsMake(0.0, 0.0, -30, 0.0)]; But, if i put the 4 lines together one interfere with other and both lost the center alignment. All my images has 30 pixels widht, and if i put 30 in the left parameter of UIEdgeInsetMake for setTitleEdgeInsets, the text is centered again. The problem is that the image never gets centered because appears that it is dependent of the button.titleLabel size. I already tried many calculations with button size, image size, titleLabel size and never get both perfectly centered. Someone already have the same problem? Thanks in advance.

I want to give some demos using iPhone and iPad to look cool :p Now my problem is how to handle: Mouse Down Mouse Up Mouse Leave The multitouch interface of the iPhone (which I expect is similar to the iPad) handles mouse move on a browser has a scrolling event. One could try to capture the scrolling event and use it to simulate the dragging but I don't even know if it will be doable or if it will only be a hack. Any one knows of a more robust manner to manage dragging events on the iphone/ipad?

  • TableView Cells Use Whole Screen Height

    I read through this tutorial Appcelerator: Using JSON to Build a Twitter Client and attempted to create my own simple application to interact with a Jetty server I setup running some Spring code. I basically call a get http request that gives me a bunch of contacts in JSON format. I then populate several rows with my JSON data and try to build a TableView. All of that works, however, my tableView rows take up the whole screen. Each row is one screen. I can scroll up and down and see all my data, but I'm trying to figure out what's wrong in my styling that's making the cells use the whole screen. My CSS is not great, so any help is appreciated. Apart from replacing deprecated functions, adding generics, will converting the whole project into UI Binder approach i.e. XML and Corresponding working Java classes, be recommended. Or shall i go on adding new UI requirments using Ui Binder and leaving the existing code as it is?
