• Getting ID of an instance newly launched with ec2-api-tools

  I'm launching an EC2 instance, by invoking ec2-run-instances from simple a bash script, and want to perform further operations on that instance (e.g. associate elastic IP), for which I need the instance id. The command is something like ec2-run-instances ami-dd8ea5a9 -K pk.pem -C cert.pem --region eu-west-1 -t c1.medium -n 1, and its output: RESERVATION r-b6ea58c1 696664755663 default INSTANCE i-945af9e3 ami-dd8ea5b9 pending 0 c1.medium 2010-04-15T10:47:56+0000 eu-west-1a aki-b02a01c4 ari-39c2e94d In this example, i-945af9e3 is the id I'm after. So, I'd need a simple way to parse the id from what the command returns - how would you go about doing it? My AWK is a little rusty... Feel free to use any tool available on a typical Linux box. (If there's a way to get it directly using EC2-API-tools, all the better. But afaik there's no EC2 command to e.g. return the id of the most recently launched instance.)

If I build the class in question into the main assembly, everything works as expected. But if I compile and load the class from an dynamically loaded assembly, the XmlSerializer throws an exception.   The IETF recommends to use base64 encoding for binary cookie values. http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-httpstate-cookie-07 So I use setrawcookie(..) but I don't know what variable to use to get the cookie back because $_COOKIE[..] still uses the URL decoding that matches setcookie(..).   I have a large matrix from which I would like to gather a collection of submatrices. If my matrix is NxN and the submatrix size is MxM, I want to collect I=(N - M + 1)^2 submatrices. In other words I want one MxM submatrix for each element in the original matrix that can be in the top-left corner of such a matrix. Here's the code I have: for y = 1:I for x = 1:I index = (y - 1) * I + x; block_set(index) = big_mat(x:x+M-1, y:y+M-1) endfor endfor The output if a) wrong, and b) implying there is something in the big_mat(x:x+M-1, y:y+M-1) expression that can get me what I want without needing the two for loops.   Hello: I have downloaded the latest GLUI source code and now I am trying to compile it. When I do so, I get the following error: g++ -O0 -Wall -pedantic -I./ -I./include -I/usr/X11R6/include -o bin/example1 example/example1.cpp -L./lib -lglui -L/usr/X11R6/lib/libXdmcp.a -lglut -lGLU -lGL -lXmu -lXext -lX11 -lXi -lm /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lXmu collect2: ld returned 1 exit status When I did a locate libXmu, I get the following output: > %:~/src/GLUI/src$ locate libXmu > /usr/lib/libXmu.so.6 > /usr/lib/libXmu.so.6.2.0 > /usr/lib/libXmuu.so.1 > /usr/lib/libXmuu.so.1.0.0 Do I get the error because I don't have a /usr/lib/libXmu.so?   My knowledge of commandline bash is missing on a particular area: I constantly forget how to properly escape characters. Today I wanted to echo this string into a file: #!/bin/env bash python -m SimpleHTTPServer echo "#!/bin/env bash\npython -m SimpleHTTPServer" server.sh && chmod +x server.sh -bash: !/bin/env: event not found That's right: Remember to escape ! or bash will think it's a special bash event command. But I can't get the escaping right! \! yields \! in the echoed string, and so does \\!. Furthermore, \n will not translate to a line break. Do you have some general tips that makes it easier for me to understand escaping rules? To be very precise, I'll accept an answer which tells me which characters I should escape on the bash command line? Including how to correctly output newline and exclamation mark in my example.

The first method I thought was just make a batch script: @ECHO OFF IF NOT EXIST C:\App GOTO :CREATE ELSE GOTO :DONTCREATE :CREATE MKDIR C:\App\Code ECHO DIRECTORY CREATED :DONTCREATE ECHO IT WAS ALREADY THERE 1) This doesn't run as I would expect. Both :CREATE and :DONTCREATE seem to run regardless? How do I do an If properly then? Output: A subdirectory or file C:\App\Code already exists. DIRECTORY CREATED IT WAS ALREADY THERE So it enters both true and false statements? 2) The app is a C# WPF app. For what I am trying to do here (create a couple of directories if they don't already exist) - should I do it some other way? Perhaps in the application as it runs?

• Re-send POST request easily - what tools?

  I am looking for an easy way to re-send POST request to the server within the browser mainly for debug purposes. Say you have a XHR request which contains POST parameters that is to be send to the server. After having changed the script on the server side, you would like to resent the very same request for analyzing the output. What tool could help? I guess it is a browser's extension. I already tried extension Tamper Data for Firefox which does the job as you can "Replay in browser". But for my taste, it is not enough straight forward, as there are 3 - 4 clicks to get the result of the request. Unfortunately, curl would not be suitable for my needs as my application has a session's cookie.

• How do I plot the warping of DTW result using gnuplot?

  Hello, Right now I have implemented Dynamic Time Warping algorithm for warping two 3D trajectories. Currently, gnuplot is my plotting tool of choice and it works fine when I plot multiple trajectories at a time. However, when I implement DTW one of the real use for plotting tool is to visualize the point warping, like this picture. Currently, the output of my DTW program is two time series in CSV files and another CSV file which indicate the warp (X in series 1 - Y in series 2). Is there any possible way to do that in gnuplot?

  Hello, I'm building form validation controls for our C# ASP application. The bulk of the work is handled by a BaseValidator control (subclassing System.Web.UI.UserControl), which also has the markup for the validation output. This is then extended by subcontrols like PasswordValidator, that provides the Validate method and any extra fields needed by that validator control. (The end goal is to have controls like <uc1:PasswordValidator ControlId="txtPassword" /> which we can plop into any form with minimum duplication.) However, PasswordValidator.ascx.cs cannot access the form elements defined in BaseValidator.ascx; the only way I've found to do so is to duplicate the markup in each subcontrol's *.ascx file. How can I extend BaseValidator.ascx.cs and access BaseValidator.ascx's markup in the subclass?

• Plain-English tutorial on artificial neural networks?

  I've Googled, StackOverflowed, everything, and I cannot seem to find a tutorial I can understand. I understand the concept of genetic algorithms, and how to implement them, (Though I haven't tried) but I cannot grasp the concept of neural networks. I know vaguely how they work... And that's about it. Could someone direct me to a tutorial that could help someone who has not even graduated middle school yet? Sure, I'm several years ahead of the majority of people my grade, but I don't understand summation, (which I apparently need if I don't want a simple binary output) vectors, and other things that I apparently should know. Is there a simple, bare-bones tutorial for neural networks? After I learn the basics, I'll proceed to more difficult ones. Preferably, they would be in Java. Thanks!

• android content provider robustness on provider crash

  On android platforms (confirmed on ICS), if a content provider dies while a client is in the middle of a query (i.e. has a open cursor) the framework decides to kill the client processes holding a open cursor. Here is a logcat output when i tried this with a download manager query that sleeps after doing a query. The "sleep" was to reproduce the problem. you can imagine it happening in a regular use case when the provider dies at the right/wrong time. And then do a kill of com.android.media (which hosts the downloadProvider). "Killing com.example (pid 12234) because provider com.android.providers.downloads.DownloadProvider is in dying process android.process.media" I tracked the code for this in ActivityManagerService::removeDyingProviderLocked Is this a policy decision or is the cursor access unsafe after the provider has died? It looks like the client cursor is holding a fd for an ashmem location populated by the CP. Is this the reason the clients are killed instead of throwing an exception like Binders when the server (provider) dies ?

• Smarty debug mode not displaying included templates.

  On www.euroworker.no/order I have set Smarty's debug mode on with {debug output=html} in the header, so it will debug every page. But it says: Smarty Debug Console included templates & config files (load time in seconds): no templates included And after a list of template variables, {$cart} Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 561962 bytes) in /home/euroworkerno/www/library/smarty/libs/plugins/modifier.debug_print_var.php on line 30 It also doesn't display a list of templates for any url.. This is strange, can anyone point me to why it won't display the lit of .tpls? I need to find some HTML comments that someone has left in to rid IE of a display bug. Thanks.

  I have some confusion related to the .NET platform build options in VS 2008 Does anyone have a clear understanding what does "Any CPU" compilation target is and what sort of files it generates? I examined the output executable of this "Any CPU" build and found that they are (who would not see that coming!) the x86 executables. So, is there any the difference between targeting executable to x86 vs "Any CPU"? Another thing that I noticed, is that managed C++ projects do not have this platform as option. I'm wondering why is that. Does that mean that my suspicion about "Any CPU" executables being plain 32-bit ones is right?

• Portable applications for phones?

  What's the best way to write an application in order to get it working on the several phones out there (iPhone, symbian-based, xpPhone, and so on)? The idea I have in mind is that of writing a few interfaces to abstract from phone-dependent stuff (ie: some Input/Output interfaces), implementing such interfaces on the several phones and then writing an application that doesn't use any phone-dependent thing. But is this really possible? What would be the language I should choose for my interfaces and applications? (would love to use C++, hopefully even with GCC extensions) Is there any project that aims to offer what I need? (maybe something like SDL?)
