• Tweaks on nvidia-settings only working when the program is opened

  I have two monitors. The master one (17") is 1yo, and the secondary (15") is really old, like 4yo. This old screen is having problems displaying colors... They are a little bit darker, what is a problem when I'm viewing pics. I have a GeForce 9800, so I changed some settings inside nvidia-settings, that fit better with this second screen. But those settings just are applied when I first open nvidia-settings. First time I configured this, it worked. I turned off computer, next day turned it on, and screen is dark again. As soon as I open nvidia-settings again, the screens get lighter again! How can I make those settings permanent and loaded at startup?

  My .htaccess on Rackspace looks like this: AuthType Basic AuthName "Restricted Area" AuthUserFile /path-to-htdocs/.htpasswd Require valid-user Now I would expect this to password protect the whole directory, however, it only protects files with .php extension! What is wrong with it? Is it something in the default http.conf that I cannot override? The path used to .htpasswd is correct as it accepts the user/passwd in the case of .php

• Exchange 2003 IMAP not working for some users

  We normally don't have a need for IMAP connections from outside the company network but in order to allow a one user to use IMAP on a portable device I've turned it on and opened port 993 on the firewall. When the user in question was unable to get connected I tested this using Outlook remotely. Start by creating a new IMAP account in Outlook using a test account. No problems, it worked perfectly. Now try the same thing using the account of the user who actually needs to connect and it's a no-go. Outlook simply keeps prompting for logon credentials. Next I tried using my own account and that too failed. Testing with a couple of other accounts worked perfectly. Interestingly enough, with my own account I've used IMAP on a MAC before (internally) without a problem and I'm not aware of anything that has changed which could affect IMAP on my account. Checking the user settings in ADUC showed that all accounts have the same Exchange protocol settings. Specifically, IMAP is enabled. A check of the event logs on the server reveals no entries for the connection attempts, making this kind of difficult to debug. Has anyone here encountered such a situation and, even more importantly, what caused it?

  I would like to email snort alerts from my Debian Lenny fw. Syslog is sending log messages from the firewalls to a central rsyslog. • Avoid Powerpoint(/Word) 2010 creating temporary files in working directory

  When opening a temporary file, Powerpoint 2010 usually creates a temporary, hidden file called ~$filename.pptx in the same directory. This is undesirable, since it can cause unnecessary activity with e.g. Dropbox. Furthermore, the "Documents" folder should not be used for temporary files -- we have the %TEMP% folder for that. So, is it possible to have Powerpoint create its temporary files in %TEMP% instead? • WEP key not working on laptop running Ubuntu

  I can't connect to my router via wifi from my laptop (running Ubuntu) even if I'm 100% sure the WEP key I punch in is correct. It works via LAN though. I'm also not able to ping localhost 127.0.0.1. I had some problems setting up the radio on my network card but I think that that works since it finds some wireless networks. (Although it's much much faster than Windows it's useless since I can't download any libraries for development.) What could be wrong with my setup?

  Did anybody try to install Hyper-V on Intel Atom platform? Hyper-V requires: x64 compatible processor with Intel VT or AMD-V technology enabled Hardware Data Execution Prevention (DEP) It seems that both requirements are satisfied with Atom as processor. However, I wonder whether there is some blocking issue (e.g. BIOS that does not support it) since all Atom motherboards I checked had quite old north/south-bridge. My intentions are to run two low-requirements virtual machines (embedded Linux), so performance should not be an issue.

  I just set up a DNS Server on my windows 7, called SimpleDNS I added a zone for example sag.com and defined www.sag.com and sag.com to 192.168.1.2 (my Network IP Address) . the problem is when I try to ping sag.com the SimpleDNS logs says that it answered the request with 192.168.1.2 , but the ping doesn't resolve anything .   Hey all, I run the following from command line: handbrakeCLI.exe -i SourceFile.mkv -o OutputFile.mkv --stop-at 120 According to the CLIGuide you can supply the --stop-at value as seconds (which is what I want, stop encoding 120 seconds into the file). My purpose for this is to quickly create a very high quality video clip from a full movie for testing other encoding processes. However, when I view my output file it is the entire movie. Any ideas?

• RHEL server Yum dependencies not working

  I have a redhat server that isnt resolving dependencies correctly. I want to install httpd via yum "yum install httpd" and it installs correctly, but when i go to start httpd I get the following error: /sbin/service httpd restart Stopping httpd: [FAILED] Starting httpd: /usr/sbin/httpd: error while loading shared libraries: libaprutil-1.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory [FAILED] It is missing the dependency for apr-util package. Weirdly the i386 package is installed and not the x86_64 package. • Java for 64bit isn't working

  I'm having errors with java left and right, normal java works just fine. It's things that use the internet for certificates and java .jnpl. I've tried Minecraft classic, it gives me a error, canirunit, error, Carnegie learning, error. I've switched browsers and still have these errors. everything is broken I've turned on ask me for unsigned certificates instead of blocking it and it doesn't pop-up. • Sound stopped working on Toshiba Satelite C855

  I have a Toshiba Satallite C855 running Windows 7 with a Realtek High Definition Audio card. Sound worked fine yesterday. Today, my two-year old did something to the machine, and I have no sound. I have adjusted sound through the icon in the lower right corner, and using the Fn keys. I have rebooted. I've verified that there are no external speakers plugged in to the laptop. It seems that this model does not have an external volume control. (If it does I can't find it.) Any ideas?

• Internet not working on a VirtualBox Linux machine

  I installed VirtualBox on a Windows 7 PC and installed Xubuntu (Ubuntu with XFCE) on it. Now on the Windows, I am connected to the internet through a LAN which automatically authenticates to connect to the network(because its my work computer). I have also installed the guest additions on this virtual machine (Xubuntu). I tried both NAT and bridging to set up internet connection but I still cannot connect to the internet. For NAT: The browser doesn't say website not found but it keeps trying to load it forever and the network status monitor (the one provided by VirtualBox) doesn't show any green light (no incoming packets). For Bridging: Same as for NAT but the network status monitor shows incoming packets and outgoing packets. But internet still doesn't work. I tried a lot of different things but none worked.

• Script stops working on HSQLDB 1.9.0-rc6

Machine A: used keygen -t rsa to create id_rsa.pub in ~/.ssh/ copied Machine A's id_rsa.pub to Machine B user's home directory Made the file permissions of id_rsa.pub 600 Machine B added Machine A's pub key to authorised_keys and authorised_keys2: cat ~/id_rsa.pub ~/.ssh/authorised_keys2 made the file permissions of id_rsa.pub 600 I've also ensured both the .ssh directories have the permission 700 on both machine A and B. If I try to login to machine B from machine A, I get asked for the password, not the ssh pass phrase. I've got the root users on both machines to talk to each other using password-less ssh, but I can't get a normal user to do it. Do the user names have to be the same on both sides? Or is there some setting else where I've missed. • SharePoint 2010 search crawl not working

  I have the following set up: 1 x Windows server 2008 R2 running SQL 1 x Windows server 2008 R2 running SharePoint 2010. I have an issue with the search service application, the crawl appears to run for a never ending amount of time with 0 successes and 0 failures. Checking the Search Application Topology, I find that "Query Component 0" is "Not Responding". I have tried the following: I have ensured that the index directory has the right permissions applied to it and the search service account is in the right groups to consume those permissions. I have re-created the search service application. I have restarted the search service manually. I have trawled the net as much as possible to find a solution but as of yet have not come across something that has resolved this issue. Any input will be very much appreciated

  I have a Marvell Yukon integrated NIC and i have installed the WOL package on my freeBSD-based NAS. I'm trying to wake my PC using the command "wol M:A:C:A:D:D:R". Command line spits back that it is "waking" however nothing happens. I found no reference to WOL whatsoever in BIOS and i enabled Magic Packet WOL in windows on that interface. Also double-checked MAC addr and that i entered it in the correct format in "wol". I'm on Windows 7. What next? =/

• Server 2008 NAT Internet Not Working

  I'm trying to set up Routing and Remote Access on Windows Server 2008 R2, I have a network connection that I want to share the internet from to another private network. The server has two NICs which are configured as follows: External NIC (Dynamically assigned by ISP) IP:10.175.4.150 Subnet:255.255.192.0 Gateway:10.175.0.1 DNS:10.175.0.1 Internal NIC IP:172.16.254.1 Subnet:255.255.255.0 Gateway:None DNS:None I have set the external NIC to be the public interface and enabled NAT on it in the RRAS MMC and set the internal NIC to be a private interface. I have also set up the DNS forwarding or whatever it is in the NAT section. From a client (IP:172.16.254.2) I can ping the server and access files on it, when I try to browse the web with the default gateway set to the internal NIC ip I end up getting a 404 page which is returned from the ISPs default gateway. I'm guessing it's something to do with the double NAT possibly. Trying to ping the ISPs default gateway from a private network client just times out as does accessing it directly. I've disabled and reconfigured RRAS multiple times and that doesn't seem to have made a difference, so can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

• Hyper-V 2008 R2 synthetic networking stops working with linux 2.6.32.15

  Hi there, so I thought I'd give Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise a try on my Homeserver (yes, it's legit... got it from msdnaa). First thing to throw at it was my firewall which runs IPFire. This distribution currently uses the kernel version 2.6.32.15 and comes with the Hyper-V drivers. So I enabled them and at first they work just fine but after a few minutes they just fail. There are no packages going in or out anymore until I reboot the VM but sometimes even that won't work so the VM just keeps "Stopping" like forever. Emulated networking works fine but it slow and uses more CPU. That way my firewall routes slower than when running under virtualbox on an atom N270. My server has an E6750; VM is limited to 25%, but that should still outperform this atom CPU especially since it's never going anywhere near 100% CPU load, so give me a break! A quick google search led me to people having the same problem (even with other distributions and kernel versions that include those drivers) but no solution yet... I already found this but I can't quite follow the author on the part where he solved the issue - especially since I need two virtual nics for my firewall distro to work (obviously one internal and one external) What am I missing here?

  I wrote a script in python that was supposed to copy a bunch of files to system32 and then install them through cmd. I can do it manually but I'm trying to make it automatic. This is what I wrote: Import shutil Import os L = ['file1.type', 'file2.type'.... ] dst = "C:\Windows\system32" For f in L: shutil.copy(f, dst) os.system("cmd command yada yada...") And it doesn't work. I tried doing it step by step with idle and it worked fine. All the files are in the same directory as the script. What am I missing here?

• Wikimedia Commons not working properly from IE 8

  It happens fairly often that a page on Wikimedia Commons doesn't load in IE. This happens to me on both machines I use, each one Windows 7 with IE 8. The page just loads endlessly (or connects—can't really tell) and timeouts after a while. Repeated attempts (trying to load the same page in 5 to 10 tabs) sometimes work, but sometimes it takes a lot more tries. As far as I can tell, no other program is affected—Firefox or PowerShell have no trouble loading the page. Also, when I use Fiddler it seems to load fine on the first try as well. Anyone has an idea what might be going on? I didn't change any settings that I am aware of (and most likely didn't do so in the same way on both machines). Preemptive note: I don't need advice in the form of »Use another browser instead.«.
