• Use a non-coalescing parser in Axis2

  Does anyone know how I can get Axis2 to use a non-coalescing XMLStreamReader when it parses a SOAP message? I am writing code that reads a large base64 binary text element. Coalescing is the default behaviour, and this causes the default XMLStreamReader to load the entire text into memory rather than returning multiple CHARACTERS events. • PowerShell PSCX Read-Archive: Cannot bind parameter... problem

  I'm running across a problem I can't seem to wrap my head around using the Read-Archive cmdlet available via PowerShell Community Extensions (v2.0.3782.38614). Here is a cut down sample used to exhibit the problem I'm running into: $mainPath = "p:\temp" $dest = Join-Path $mainPath "ps\CenCodes.zip" Read-Archive -Path $dest -Format zip Running the above produces the following error: Read-Archive : Cannot bind parameter 'Path'. Cannot convert the "p:\temp\ps\CenCodes.zip" value of type "System.String" to type "Pscx.IO.PscxPathInfo". • ASP.NET MVC Posted date field comes in as 1/1/0001

  Just started working with .NET and MVC(1). I'm having a problem wherein in my add action the entered date for some reason ends up as 1/1/0001 instead of what is entered thus causing a date overflow. In my model, this field ("Added") is is of type datetime and does not allow nulls. I know its probably not enough information to make a conlusive determination on why this is failing, but if someone could provide some good debugging tips on how to determine where the submitted date is getting munged I'd really appreciate it.

• Linear regression confidence intervals in SQL

  I'm using some fairly straight-forward SQL code to calculate the coefficients of regression (intercept and slope) of some (x,y) data points, using least-squares. This gives me a nice best-fit line through the data. However we would like to be able to see the 95% and 5% confidence intervals for the line of best-fit (the curves below). What these mean is that the true line has 95% probability of being below the upper curve and 95% probability of being above the lower curve. How can I calculate these curves? I have already read wikipedia etc. and done some googling but I haven't found understandable mathematical equations to be able to calculate this.   i am wrking on tag clouds with wp columns ( java script) but it s not wrking .It contains files like tagcloud.swf and swfobject.js . • 500 Worker Threads, what kind of thread pool?

  I am wondering if this is the best way to do this. I have about 500 threads that run indefinitely, but Thread.sleep for a minute when done one cycle of processing. ExecutorService es = Executors.newFixedThreadPool(list.size()+1); for (int i = 0; i < list.size(); i++) { es.execute(coreAppVector.elementAt(i)); //coreAppVector is a vector of extends thread objects } The code that is executing is really simple and basically just this class aThread extends Thread { public void run(){ while(true){ Thread.sleep(ONE_MINUTE); //Lots of computation every minute } } } I do need a separate threads for each running task, so changing the architecture isn't an option. I tried making my threadPool size equal to Runtime.getRuntime().availableProcessors() which attempted to run all 500 threads, but only let 8 (4xhyperthreading) of them execute. The other threads wouldn't surrender and let other threads have their turn. I tried putting in a wait() and notify(), but still no luck. If anyone has a simple example or some tips, I would be grateful! Well, the design is arguably flawed. The threads implement Genetic-Programming or GP, a type of learning algorithm. Each thread analyzes advanced trends makes predictions. If the thread ever completes, the learning is lost. That said, I was hoping that sleep() would allow me to share some of the resources while one thread isn't "learning"

• Javascript: "Dangling" Reference to DOM element?

  It seems that in Javascript, if you have a reference to some DOM element, and then modify the DOM by adding additional elements to document.body, your DOM reference becomes invalidated. Consider the following code: <html> <head> <script type = "text/javascript"> function work() { var foo = document.getElementById("foo"); alert(foo == document.getElementById("foo")); document.body.innerHTML += "<div>blah blah</div>"; alert(foo == document.getElementById("foo")); } </script> </head> <body> <div id = "foo" onclick='work()'>Foo</div> </body> </html> When you click on the DIV, this alerts "true", and then "false." So in other words, after modifying document.body, the reference to the DIV element is no longer valid. This behavior is the same on Firefox and MSIE. Some questions: Why does this occur? Is this behavior specified by the ECMAScript standard, or is this a browser-specific issue? Note: there's another question posted on stackoverflow that seems to be referring to the same issue, but neither the question nor the answers are very clear.

• Sharepoint NewForm adding attachments programatically

  I have a list with a custom form which contains a custom file upload control. As soon as the user selects a file and clicks upload, i want this file to go directly to the attachments list within that listitem. However, when adding the file to SPContext.Current.ListItem.Attachments on a new item, the attachment wont show up in the list after saving. If i instead use item.Update() on the new item after adding the attachment i get an error in Sharepoint, but when i then go back to the list, the item is there with its attachment. It seems like its trying to create 2 new entries at once when i save (item.Update) which results in the second of those crashing. • Changing variables outside of Scope C#

  Hi, I'm a beginner C# programmer, and to improve my skills I decided to give Project Euler a try. The first problem on the site asks you to find the sum of all the multiples of 3 and 5 under 1000. • Fill in word form field with more than 255 characters

  I am trying to programmaticly fill in a microsoft word form. I am successfully able to do so if the string is under 255 chars with the following code below, however it says the string is too long if i try and use a string over 255 chars... How do I get past this limitation? If I open the word doc in word I can type in more than 255 chars without a problem. • How to create a new widget for dojox.grid.cells.dijit?

  I am trying to create a button widget for dojox.grid. My problems are: 1) The button is only shown when I double click the grid. 2) I can't figure out how to set attributes through declarative markup. It seems that the markupFactory function is responsible for it but it doesn't set the widget's label. • Is there such a thing as IMAP for podcasts?

  Is there such a thing as IMAP for podcasts? I own a desktop, laptop, iPod, smartphone and a web-client all downloading StackOverflow Podcasts. (among others) They all tell me which episodes are available and which are already played. Everything is a horrible mess, ofcourse. My iPod is somewhat in sync with my desktop, but everything else is a random jungle. The same problem with e-mail is solved by IMAP. Every device gets content and meta-information from one server, and stays in sync with it. Per device, I can set preferences (do or do not download the complete archive including junkmail). Can we implement the IMAP approach for podcasts? Or is there a better metaphore/standard to solve this problem? How will the adoption-strategy look like? (by the way: except for the Windows smartphone, I own a full Apple-stack of products. Even then, I run into this problem) UPDATE The RSS-to-Imap link to sourceforge looks promesting, but very alpha/experimental. UPDATE 2 The one thing RSS is missing is the command/method/parameter/attribute to delete/unread items. RSS can only add, not remove. If RSS(N+1) (3?) could add a value for unread="true|false", it would be solved. If I cache all my RSS-feeds on my own server, and add the attribute myself, I only would have to convince iTunes and every other client to respect that.

• Python Twisted Client Connection Lost

  I have this twisted client, which connects with a twisted server having an index. I ran this client from command-line. It worked fine. Now I modified it to run in loop (see main()) so that I can keep querying. But the client runs only once. Next time it simply says connection lost \n Connection lost - goodbye!. • Rspec Selenium. Test to check certain Ajax functions passes when i expect it to fail.

  I am testing a Ajax action using Rspec and Selenium. This test should pass right ? I also kept an alert and tried @browser.is_alert_present.should be_true but i got the same error. I tried @browser.is_text_present("test") and this test succeeded. In the test database a record was created for Alok Swain but when I tried the above assertion it passed when i expected it to fail. Is there any thing else to be done here. What am I missing ?

• Best way to handle Many-to-Many relationships in PHP MySQL

  I am looking for the best way to handle a database of many-to-many relationships in PHP and MySQL. Right now I have 2 tables: Users (id, user_name, first_name, last_name) Connections (id_1, id_2) In the User table id is auto incremented on add and user_name is unique, but can be changed. Unfortunately, I don't have control over the user_name and its ability to be changed, but I must account for it. The Connections table is obviously, user1 and user2's id. The connection table needs to account for these possible relations: user1 --> user2 (user 1 friends with user 2 but not user2 friends with user1) user2 --> user1 (user 2 friends with user 1 but not user1 friends with user2) user1 <--> user2 (user 1 and user 2 mutually friends) user1 <-!-> user2 (user 1 and user 2 not friends) That part is not the problem, The problem I am having with is keeping these relations unique when and if they change in batches. Possible solution 1: delete all of user 1's relations and readd them with the updated list. I think this might be too slow for my needs. Solution 2? Anyone else encounter this problem? How should I best handle this? update: distinguishing relationships: i handle relationships like this: user1, user2 user1, user3 user2, user1 in that example the following is true: user1 follows user2 and user3 user2 only follows user1 but doesn't follow user3 user3 doesn't follow either user1 or user2

• Practical refactoring using unit tests

  Having just read the first four chapters of Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code, I embarked on my first refactoring and almost immediately came to a roadblock. It stems from the requirement that before you begin refactoring, you should put unit tests around the legacy code. That allows you to be sure your refactoring didn't change what the original code did (only how it did it). So my first question is this: how do I unit-test a method in legacy code? How can I put a unit test around a 500 line (if I'm lucky) method that doesn't do just one task? It seems to me that I would have to refactor my legacy code just to make it unit-testable. Does anyone have any experience refactoring using unit tests? And, if so, do you have any practical examples you can share with me? My second question is somewhat hard to explain. Here's an example: I want to refactor a legacy method that populates an object from a database record. Wouldn't I have to write a unit test that compares an object retrieved using the old method, with an object retrieved using my refactored method? Otherwise, how would I know that my refactored method produces the same results as the old method? If that is true, then how long do I leave the old deprecated method in the source code? Do I just whack it after I test a few different records? Or, do I need to keep it around for a while in case I encounter a bug in my refactored code? Lastly, since a couple people have asked...the legacy code was originally written in VB6 and then ported to VB.NET with minimal architecture changes.

• How-to display a .gif as background image?

The problem is in that "img/loading.gif" and safari (on winXP): in ff and ie I have no problems, and I clearly see the animated gif. In safari I can't see it. If I change the image with a (obviously static) png the image appears... Am I doing something wrong? What's the problem with safari?
