• Helpful advice on developing a professional MS Word add-on

  A few months back I put together a simple proof-of-concept piece of software for a small firm with an idea for a document editing tool. The company wanted this tool to be integrated into Microsoft Word, understandably, to maximize its accessibility to the average user. I essentially wrote the underlying library with all of the core functionality as a C# project, and then used VSTO to get it running inside of Word. It felt like a bit of a duct tape solution, really; but then, I have (practically) zero experience developing tools for integration with MS Office, and it was only a proof of concept anyway. Well, the firm was quite pleased with my work overall, and they're looking to move from "proof of concept" to the real deal. Fortunately, as I said, the core functionality is all there and will only need to be somewhat tweaked and enhanced. My main concern is figuring out how to put together an application that will integrate with MS Word in a clean and polished way, and which can be deployed easily in accordance with a regular user's expectations (i.e., simply running an install program and voila, it's there in Word). I seem to remember reading somewhere that nobody uses VSTO for real professional projects. Is this true? False? What are the alternatives? And what are the tips and gotchas that I should be aware of before getting started on this issue of MS Word integration?

• Question about passing data using intents

  Hi everyone, I'm trying to modify the Notepad tutorial (the Notepadv3 solution) to take in a value into the NoteEdit class, given to by the Notepadv3 class. I've successfully used .putExtra in the OnListItemClick method to place the value into the NoteEdit class, but I'm struggling to do this for the createNote method; I'm getting a force close when I try to create a new note. I bet there's a simple solution, but I'm pretty new to Java & Android and would very much appreciate your help. • Can LINQ expression classes implement the observer pattern instead of deferred execution?

  Hi. We have issues within an application using a state machine. The application is implemented as a windows service and is iteration based (it "foreaches" itself through everything) and there are myriads of instances being processed by the state machine. As I'm reading the MEAP version of Jon Skeets book "C# in Depth, 2nd ed", I'm wondering if I can change the whole thing to use linq expression instances so that guards and conditions are represented using expression trees. We are building many applications on this state machine engine and would probably greatly benefit from the new Expression tree visualizer in VS 2010 Now, simple example. If I have an expression tree where there is an OR Expression condition with two sub nodes, is there any way that these can implement the observer pattern so that the expression tree becomes event driven? If a condition change, it should notify its parent node (the OR node). Since the OR node then changes from "false" to "true", then it should notify ITS parent and so on. I love the declarative model of expression trees, but the deferred execution model works in opposite direction of the control flow if you want event based "live" conditions. Am I off on a wild goose chase here? Or is there some concept in the BCL that may help me achieve this?

• XSLT - Catching parameters

  The situation is I have two xslt files: one is called from my ASP.NET code, and there, the second xslt file is imported. What I'd like to accomplish is to pass a parameter to the first one so the second xslt(the one that is imported at the first xslt) can read it. My c# code looks like this: var oArgs = new XsltArgumentList(); oArgs.AddParam("fbLikeFeatureName", "", "Facebook_Like_Button"); ltlContentBody.Text = xmlUtil.TransformXML(oXmlDoc, Server.MapPath(eSpaceId + "/styles/ExploringXSLT/ExploreContentObjects.xslt"), true); And I'm catching the param at the first xslt this way: <xsl:param name="fbLikeFeatureName" /> And then, passing it to the second xslt like this(previously, I import that file): <xsl:call-template name="Articles"> <xsl:with-param name="fbLikeFeatureName"></xsl:with-param> </xsl:call-template> Finally, I'm catching the param on the second xslt file as following: <xsl:value-of select="$fbLikeButtonName"/> What Am I doing wrong?   Sorry for asking it again, there are already 3 questions about this keyword. But all of them tell the purpose of 'this'. My question is when not to use 'this' keyword . • Java OO design confusion: how to handle actions modified by states modified by actions...

  Hi folks, Given an entity, whose action is potentially modified by states (of the entity and other entities) in turn potentially modified by other actions (of the entity and other entities) , what is the best way to code or design to handle the potential existence of the modifiers? Speaking metaphorically, I am coding a Java application representing a piano. As you know a piano has keys (which, when pressed, emit sound) and pedals (which, when pressed, modify the keys' sounds). My base class structure is as follows: Entity (for keys and pedals) State (this holds each entity's states, e.g. name such as "soft pedal", and boolean "Pressed"), Action (this holds each entity's actions, e.g. play sound when pressed, or modify others sounds). By composition, the Entity class has a copy of each of State and Action inside it. e.g.: public class Entity { State entityState = new State(); Action entityAction = new Action(); Thus I have coded a "C-Sharp" key Entity. When I "press" that entity (set its "Pressed" state to true), its action plays a "C-Sharp" sound and then sets its "Pressed" state to false. At the same time, if the "C-Sharp" key entity is not "tuned", its sound deviates from "C-Sharp". Meanwhile I have coded a "soft pedal" Entity. When that entity is "pressed", no sound plays but its action is to make softer the sound of the "C-Sharp" and other key entities. I have also coded a "sustain pedal" Entity. When that entity is "pressed", no sound plays but its action is to enable reverberation of the sound of the "C-Sharp" and other key entities. Both the "soft" and "sustain pedals" can be pressed at the same time with the result that keys entities become both softened and reverberating. In short, I do not understand how to make this simultaneous series of states and actions modify each other in a sensible OO way. I am wary of coding a massive series of "if" statements or "switches".   Hi. I have 2 classes Tema(Homework) and Disciplina (course), where a Course has a Set of homeworks. In Hibernate i have mapped this to a one-to-many associations like this: <class name="model.Disciplina" table="devgar_scoala.discipline" > <id name="id" > <generator class="increment"/> </id> <set name="listaTeme" table="devgar_scoala.teme"> <key column="Discipline_id" not-null="true" ></key> <one-to-many class="model.Tema" ></one-to-many> </set> </class> <class name="model.Tema" table="devgar_scoala.teme" > <id name="id"> <generator class="increment" /> </id> <property name="titlu" type="string" /> <property name="cerinta" type="binary"> <column name="cerinta" sql-type="blob" /> </property> </class> The problem is that it will add (insert rows in the table 'Teme') but it won't delete any rows and i get no exceptions thrown. Im using the merge() method.

  Hiya, I am attempting to carry out a few functions when a user registers on a wordpress site. Any ideas how i execute a function once Wordpress has completed the whole registration process of adding meta data into the relevant tables too? I attempted to use this: add_filter('user_register ','tml_new_user_registered',99); But with no luck unfortunately. Thanks in advance!

• Custom model validation of dependent properties using Data Annotations

  Since now I've used the excellent FluentValidation library to validate my model classes. In web applications I use it in conjunction with the jquery.validate plugin to perform client side validation as well. One drawback is that much of the validation logic is repeated on the client side and is no longer centralized at a single place. For this reason I'm looking for an alternative. There are many examples out there showing the usage of data annotations to perform model validation. It looks very promising. One thing I couldn't find out is how to validate a property that depends on another property value. Let's take for example the following model: public class Event { [Required] public DateTime? StartDate { get; set; } [Required] public DateTime? EndDate { get; set; } } I would like to ensure that EndDate is greater than StartDate. I could write a custom validation attribute extending ValidationAttribute in order to perform custom validation logic. Unfortunately I couldn't find a way to obtain the model instance: public class CustomValidationAttribute : ValidationAttribute { public override bool IsValid(object value) { // value represents the property value on which this attribute is applied // but how to obtain the object instance to which this property belongs? return true; } } I found that the CustomValidationAttribute seems to do the job because it has this ValidationContext property that contains the object instance being validated. Unfortunately this attribute has been added only in .NET 4.0. So my question is: can I achieve the same functionality in .NET 3.5 SP1? UPDATE: It seems that FluentValidation already supports clientside validation and metadata in ASP.NET MVC 2. Still it would be good to know though if data annotations could be used to validate dependent properties.

I've read some articles about tests and decided to try to write some tests for an extremely simple Django app or a start. • regenerating url in cf9/Coldbox

  Hi I am wondering if there is a way to regenerate the URL when any page is loaded in coldbox/CF9 when using event.buildLink ? Currently I get http://cawksd05.codandev.local:8080/entries/editor when using event.buildlink. But the correct url should have /index.cfm added to it as shown below: /index.cfm/entries/editor Is there a way to set this once and where does this get set as I am confused where to set this for all my pages so that /index.cfm gets added the the url prefix when I do an event.Buildlink. • c# calling process "cannot find the file specified"

  I'm a c# newbie so bear with me. I'm trying to call "pslist" from PsTools from a c# app, but I keep getting "The system cannot find the file specified". I thought I read somewhere on google that the exe should be in c:\windows\system32, so I tried that, still nothing. Even trying the full path to c:\windows\system32\PsList.exe is not working. I can open other things like notepad or regedit. Any ideas? C:\WINDOWS\system32dir C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\PsList.exe Volume in drive C has no label. • C#/.NET library for source code formatting, like the one used by Stack Overflow?

  I am writing a command line tool to convert Markdown text to html output, which seems easy enough. However, I am wondering how to get nice syntax coloring for embedded code blocks, like the one used by Stack Overflow. Does anyone know either: What library StackOverflow is using or if there's a library out there that I can easily reuse? Basically it would need to have some of the same "intelligence" found in the one that Stack Overflow uses, by basically doing a best-attempt at figuring out the language in use to pick the right keywords. Basically, what I want is for my own program to handle a block like the following: if (a == 0) return true; if (a == 1) return false; // fall-back Markdown Sharp, the library I'm using, by default outputs the above as a simple pre/code html block, with no syntax coloring. I'd like the same type of handling as the formatting on Stack Overflow does, the above contains blue "return" keywords for example. Or, hmm, after checking the source of this Stack Overflow page after adding the code example, I notice that it too is formatted like a simple pre/code block. Is it pure javascript-magic at works here, so perhaps there's no such library? If there's no library that will automagically determine a possible language by the keywords used, is there one that would work if I explicitly told it the language? Since this is "my" markdown-commandline-tool, I can easily add syntax if I need to.

• Loading velocity template inside a jar file

  I have a project where I want to load a velocity template to complete it with parameters. The whole application is packaged as a jar file. However, once I package the program and try to run it using the command line I get an error because the file could not be found. I imagine the problem is in this line: ve.setProperty(RuntimeConstants.FILE_RESOURCE_LOADER_PATH, file.getAbsolutePath()); Because in a jar the absolute file does not exist, since it's inside a zip, but I couldn't yet find a better way to do it. Anyone has any ideas?

• How do you manually set a RadioGroup value in wicket?

  I'm trying to change the selected radio button in a Wicket RadioGroup during an AjaxEventBehavior but can't figure out how to do so. Specifically when a user types some text in a textbox I want to change the selected radio button to one I specify. How do you do this? Component: [MarkupContainer [Component id = myRadioGroup]] What's the proper way to do this? I'm not finding a whole lot of wicket documentation for this online.

• Improving Performance on this Image Creation function

  Hello all, I am making use of GD2 and the image functions to take in a string and then convert that into an image using different fonts at different sizes. The function I use is below. Currently, its pretty quick but not quick enough. The function gets called about 20 times per user and the images generated are always new ones (different) so caching isn't going to help! I was hoping to get some ideas on how to make this function faster. Maybe supply more RAM to the script running? Anything else that is specific to this PHP function?   Coming from ASP.NET I'm having a hard time with basic ADF concepts. I need to bind a table on a button click, and for some reason I don't understand (I'm leaning towards page life cycle, which I guess is different from ASP.NET) it's not working. • Java CountDownLatch used to wait for JFrame to dispose

  I have referenced this previous question as well as other sources, but cannot get CountDownLatch to work correctly. Background: mainFrame creates new Frame called dataEntryFrame. When dataEntryFrame "Submit" button is clicked, record added to database and dataEntryFrame disposed. At this point, mainFrame should clear and reload a jList that shows all records. Issue: When dataEntryFrame loads, java freezes, dataEntryFrame components never load. I cannot get past this part... then, in the DataEntryFrame, CountDownLatch should only decrements after the submit button is clicked, successfully adds a record to a database table, and disposes itself. Or when the user clicks cancel... • WPF BackGroundWorker ProgressChanged not updating textblock

  I have the method below that seems to behaving strangely. The ProgressChanged and RunWorkerCompleted seem to be updating themselves at the same time. If I comment out the RunWorkerCompleted code which updates the Textblock I see the ProgressChanged taking effect after the data is transferred. What am i doing wrong here? • rails add :prompt to form_tag fields?

  Hey guys, My question is simple. Can I add either of the blow :prompt => "Any" :include_blank => true to a form in form_tag. Here is an example.   The login page on a project i'm currently fixing up shows blank. i tried echoing some words to find out where the fault lied.
