  • The Uganda .NET Usergroup meeting for January 2011 - a look back.

    We had a very interesting meeting on Friday 28th last week. We had 10 attendees and two speakers. The first topic presented was Cloud Computing, presented by Allan Rwakatungu @arwakatungu who works with MTN Uganda. He gave a very brilliant outline of how Cloud computing and service oriented applications had begun changing the platform for operating business and the costs it saves because of scalability and elasticity. He went on to demonstrate the steps you would take if you are beginning a new Windows Azure project. He explained the history and evolution of the Windows Azure, SQL Azure and cloud services offered by Amazon and google.com. The attendees had many questions to ask (obviously), but they were all answered very well. We once again thank Allan, for taking time to prepare the presentation and demonstrating for us. We recorded a video on the entire presentation and after doing some editing we will publish it. One wish which was echoed by most members was that Microsoft should open the cloud services and development for Africa. Microsoft currently does not even have servers here in Africa and so far, that does not put African developers in the same platform as other developers in other continents. Now is the time considering the improvements in network speeds and joining of the Seacom network and broadband.   I presented on Parallelism and Multithreading using .NET 4.0, I also gave some details on the language changes in C# 5.0 and the async keyword and the TaskEx class. I explained the Task, Scheduling of parallel tasks and demonstrated problems that may arise from using parallelism inappropriately. I also demonstrated the performance improvements that may be achieved by taking advantage of multi-core processors. You may download the presentation on Parallelism and Multi-threading from here. The resolution of the meeting was that we should meet more than once a month and begin other activities which should be more fun. e.g. Geek Dinner, Geek Beer or CodeCamp.   • It's 2011 - why do I still have to use tables for email?

    This might seem like a rant, but I am curious. CSS replaced tables for layout a long time ago. But we still have to use tables for layout when creating rich emails. Why is this? Are there any other options? Are there really technical constraints that prevent CSS from working in an email. What are they? I can see how linked or embedded style sheets might be a problem, but not even inline styles work. Is this ever going to change?

    Microsoft announced the news in its Outlook blog, calling the new service modern email for the next billion mailboxes. The company is touting a fresh, clean user interface with fewer pixels in the header and no display ads; it should work well on portable devices.   • ADF Hands on Training &ndash; Prerequisites for 22nd March 2011

    For those of you coming to the ADF Hands on training on the 22nd March in London, there was a link to the prerequisites.  Unfortunately, in a reshuffle of content on OTN, this page was removed.  So, over the next day or so I’m hoping to the pull together the relevant information into this blog post.  So keep checking back! Firstly, you need to being your laptop with you to do the hands on exercises.  No laptop, no hands on. Recommended 2GB RAM running Microsoft Windows XP SP2, 2003 Server SP2, Vista (32 bit only), Windows 7 or Linux or Mac 2GHz Processor (less will be acceptable but slower) Mozilla Firefox 2.0 or higher, Internet Explorer 7 or higher, Safari 3.0 and higher, Google Chrome 1.0 or higher Winzip or other extracting software Adobe Acrobat reader Flash (if you want to see dynamic graphs in your application) As for software, you will need have installed JDeveloper 11g.  The hands on instructions are based on 11.1.1.2 (or is it 11.1.1.3)! anyway, either of those or 11.1.1.4 would be required. You also need an Oracle database on your machine and access to the HR schema (which should be unlocked).  Don’t expect to have access to a network and VPN to a database. A simple test, unplug your laptop from your corporate network, run up JDev  and select File –> New –> Database connection and make sure you can connect to HR database and see the Emp/Dept etc tables.  If you can do that, you should be good to go. I would strongly recommend ensuring you have this in place before you arrive on Tuesday. Look forward to seeing you there.

Most clients (Gmail, Lotus Notes 8, hotmail/live, windows live mail, outlook express) receive the emails just fine, but Outlook 2007 does not.   • Storing multipe credentials for the same server.

    I have a need to connect to the same exchange server with multiple accounts. I'm using Extra Outlook to simultaneously load different profiles connecting to each account. Here's a simplified example of the accounts I need to use: log in to test.local.domain user1: [email protected] user2: [email protected] user3: [email protected] I am always being prompted for passwords when opening an Outlook instance. Essentialy only the last username/password combination for each server is stored by Vista. So if I launch Outlook with the same profile I used last, before starting launching using a profile for a different account, I'm not prompted for authentication. Aternatively, adding a new entry in Vista's Stored User Names and Passwords dialog with credentials for user2, when there is alraedy an entry for user1 on the same target server will replace the existing user1 entry with the new user 2 entry. I'm guessing the same thing is going on silently behind the scenes when I provide Outlook credentials. How can I configure Vista's credential management to store credentials for multiple users on the same server?

    We run Exchange 2003, but have a mix of Outlook 2003/2007/2010 in the environment. We have three rooms that need to be configured as resources. Some observations we've made with resource scheduling/booking are: Outlook 2010 users have trouble with the native Exchange 2003 resource scheduling method and require direct booking to be configured via registry Outlook 2007 users are unable to use direct booking (is this accurate?) Outlook 2003 users can only use the native Exchange 2003 resource scheduling method (is this accurate?) Direct booking cannot be combined with the auto-accept agent What is the correct way to setup resource scheduling in a mixed environment like this? Thanks, Daniel

    Hello The venerable EccoPro offered a great in-place outliner to organize tasks into sub-tasks, and add a Due Date to any item so that they would be also displayed in the Calendar (and in a Palm pilot if the used had one). It seems like Outlook only supports a single-level task list: Is there an add-on to Outlook to do this, or another application than Outlook provided it's also capable of syncing with a BlackBerry? Thank you.

  • What is your best solution for task management?

    I have Outlook at work, Gmail at home and a BlackBerry (only syncs with work Outlook). I see that there are a number of online websites that support webbased task lists such as "remember the milk", etc. My biggest issue with Outlook is that I flag a number of emails as tasks and they show up as tasks in Outlook but NOT on my BlackBerry. I still haven't found a workaround to this. I see there is some BlackBerry sync tools but I am not sure if this will work with my corporate network. Any suggestions for getting this to work or another optimal task management solution that works at home, work and on the road?

  • Exchange Online SMTP Not Working With Any Email Client

    I am trying to switch our company mail server to exchange online. I have successfully added my domain and users and can send and receive mails through Outlook Web App. I can also send and receive if I configure my Outlook 2013 client using Exchange protocol. However, some folks in company are using Thunderbird and some old Outlook Clients. For those, I tried to connect to Exchange via IMAP/SMTP. This is what I use, For incoming, IMAP / Port : 993 with SSL / Host : outlook.office365.com For outgoing, SMTP / Port : 589 with TSL / Host : smtp.office365.com I can receive emails, however I could not be able to send emails. I keep getting An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: 4.3.2 Service not active. Please verify that your email address is correct in your Mail preferences and try again. My username and password are correct, I am using my mail address as my username to mailbox. I also tried sending mail via C# application which was working for outlook.com and gmail.com SMTP settings. It also fails to send emails and returns the same error code. I thought TB and other old clients such as Office 2003 might not support Exc. Online so I tried same settings in Office 2013. It successfully connected my mailbox when checking for configuration but failed in sending test message and returned the same error code. Configuration for incoming and outgoing mailbox are taken from here. They are also available on Office 365 user page and they are same. What could be the reason for error ?

  • Nightmare: Upgrading Tomcat 5.5 to 6.0

    I'm trying to upgrade a perfectly running embedded Tomcat 5.5 to Tomcat 6.0. I understand that all I need to do is replace Tomcat 5.5 jars with 6.0. That's what I did. So I replaced the following jars: catalina-5.0.28.jar catalina-5.5.9.jar catalina-optional-5.5.9.jar commons-el.jar commons-modeler-1.1.0.jar jasper-compiler-jdt.jar jasper-compiler.jar jasper-runtime.jar jmx-5.0.28.jar jsp-api-2.0.jar naming-factory.jar naming-resources.jar servlet-api-2.4.jar servlets-default.jar tomcat-coyote.jar tomcat-http.jar tomcat-util.jar with: annotations-api.jar catalina.jar jasper.jar tomcat-dbcp.jar catalina-ant.jar el-api.jar jsp-api.jar tomcat-i18n-es.jar catalina-ha.jar jasper-el.jar servlet-api.jar tomcat-i18n-fr.jar catalina-tribes.jar jasper-jdt.jar tomcat-coyote.jar tomcat-i18n-ja.jar tomcat-juli.jar As soon as I start the server, I get the following message in the logs at INFO level: INFO: Starting Servlet Engine: Apache Tomcat/6.0.29 Dec 31, 2010 6:04:18 AM org.apache.catalina.loader.WebappClassLoader validateJarFile INFO: validateJarFile(/usr/local/blah/blue/./WEB-INF/lib/servlet-api.jar) - jar not loaded. See Servlet Spec 2.3, section 9.7.2. Offending class: javax/servlet/Servlet.class Based on the this explanation, I need to remove a jar file which has a conflicting Servlet.class. I swear to God, there is no other conflicting jar file, I grepped system wide for Servlet.class, it matched only servlet-api.jar. I also downloaded javaee.jar and replaced it by servlet-api.jar, to same avail. Having tried lot of these stuff, I did not have much to look upto, so set the tomcat logging level to ALL. In the log I could see that it is trying to check for Servlet.class in each and every jar it is loading until it finds servlet-api.jar and throws "jar not loaded" message as soon as it finds servlet-api.jar. This file was accessible and could be displayed. But, all my jsp's and classes are inside WEB-INF(ofcourse). Sick and tired of this issue, please help me solve it. I've already spent 20-24 hours on this unsuccessfully. Any pointers directions hints leads?
