• opening socket to google hangs on SYN_SENT

  I have 2 computers now: downloader (asus at4nm10t-i) with debian and desktop (asus sabertooth 990fx) with gentoo in the same network under NAT even with the same ethernet card: RTL8111E. driver r8169 is compiled as module on both computers. Sometimes in evenings desktop cannot connect to google and all its services like now: curl -v http://www.google.by on downloader it received server's answer immediately. on desktop it hanged and when I ran in other terminal: netstat -ntp | grep curl >>tcp 0 1 192.168.0.7:54126 173.194.35.191:80 SYN_SENT 4876/curl after 1-2 minutes it received server's answer. I was tried to change ip of network, mac address of desktop but nothing changed. When I was trying to connect to another services except google: curl -v http://www.yahoo.com both computers received answers immediately! Only when I rebooted desktop it begins to work with google services correctly I cant understand what is this bug related to. In which bugtracker should I post this: r8169 or linux kernel or google? PS. Desktop was checked with memtest: 5 passes - no errors

• Got black screen when recording screen from xvfb by ffmpeg x11grab device

  I'm trying to record video from a firefox run by xvfb-run but it always output nothing in the video file except black screen. Here's what I did: start a firefox, open google.com: $ xvfb-run firefox https://google.com Then it will use the default display server number 99. I can see the display information by command xdpyinfo -display :99. A screenshot works very well by command: $ xwd -root -silent -display :99.0 | xwdtopnm |pnmtojpeg > screen.jpg Start using ffmpeg to record a video: $ ffmpeg -f x11grab -i :99.0 out.mpg When I play the video file out.mpg, there's black screen all the time. Is there any parameter I missed? Updates I made progress that the video works instead of black screen only by this command: $ ffmpeg -y -r 30 -g 300 -f x11grab -s 1024x768 -i :99 -vcodec qtrle out.mov Notice it requires the screen resolution matches by specify more options to xvfb-run: $ xvfb-run -s "-screen 0 1224x768x16" -a firefox http://google.com But I still want to get more feedbacks and answers here.

• Socket(TCPIP) Unstable

  I have a setup of a SCPI server in a Win7 PC and have 2 other programs talking to it locally(127.0.0.1) over TCPIP socket 5025 and 5029. This worked well and stable in a fresh PC, but when we moved it into our production lines and the IT dept added their policies and stuff, it became unstable. The PC is connected to the production floor server but both of the programs are running locally in the PC. The connection tends to be disconnected when there is an idle period. And it takes 5-6times to refreshing the connection to get it back. I'm not a programmer myself, so I'm hoping to see if anyone here can help with some answers. Thank you very much!! • JMeter Stress testing

  MAMP server hosting a Joomla instance. I'd like to hear the community's thoughts on the best way to stress test the server and find it's breaking point on concurrent users etc. Currently I have setup a test plan which I have going to the home page, grabbing the index.php, css, js and all images and have run tests on 1 to 100 users and a varying number of loops. What I'd like to know is how do I determine at what number of concurrent requests or looping requests is a good way to gauge if my server can handle the proposed increase in traffic? What is a good KB/sec, Throughput, Average, Max, Min via the Aggregate Report and at what number of threads/loops etc? I have googled and have not found immediate answers to these questions and thought to come here. More or less I have just used this http://jakarta.apache.org/jmeter/usermanual/jmeter_proxy_step_by_step.pdf to guide me and then I have been winging it in terms of Thread and Loop numbers. Any light shed on these subject would be much appreciated.

• Hard disk problem pop up warning

  I'm using windows 7 ultimate and it started to give me this hard disk problem warning that i had before in another OS that made me disable smart, it has been over a year since i did and my pc is running ok so my HDD is ok. all i wanna do is disable this warning that popsup while i'm gaming or doing anything else. thanks for your help :) Edit: (adding in info that was added as an answer instead of part of the question) So it's me again and i agree with both answers but i don't have the money right now to buy a new one, and yeah it could die now, i can't say. so i uploaded an image of hd tune pro scan on my HDD thanks again! anymore information would be even better, bye.

• Is it a bad idea to run an asp.net app pool with the same identity as IIS's anon user?

  Subject says it all really, Thinking on security terms, I want to give each site on my server its own user account, so that they can't access each other's data. I also want to use integrated authentication for sql so i dont have any passwords knocking about in connection strings. Is it a bad idea to use the same account for the app pool identity and the anon user account for iis (im interested in answers for both v6 and 7)? Edit: ive seen this post describing how IIS7 allows you to automatically use the same account, but the question of whether its a good idea or not remains ;) If so, why? Thanks

• Problems with SCP stalling during file copy over VPN

  I have a series of files I need to copy via SCP over a VPN to a remote linux server each night. The files are not large, we're talking about tens of megabytes here, but the file copy almost always stalls after a few seconds. Running the SCP command with -vvv, I see the following over and over throughout the attempted copy process: debug2: channel 0: rcvd adjust 131072 debug2: channel 0: rcvd adjust 131072 debug2: channel 0: rcvd adjust 131072 Any thoughts? I see this question being asked in various places out there, but never any answers. Any help would be appreciated.

• Synology DS210j & online backup: what do people recommend?

I noticed that DiskStation Manager v2.3 provides various options including Amazon S3 and rsync: Does anybody have some real usage against cost statistics for Amazon's S3 service? How is sensitive data protected on Amazon S3? Are there any rsync online backup options? If so, what do people recommend? • Hyper-V VMs hanging 10 minutes after startup

  Hyper-V running under a fresh install of 2008 R2 DC 2 VMs both running 2008 R2 STD One VM has SQL 2008 Server w/ SP2 and Office 2007 Enterprise w/ SP2 Othe VMS only Office 2007 w/ SP2. Approximately 10 minutes after reboot the Hyuper-V host the VMs will hang Hang = answers pings, but no RDP connections and Hyper-V console session is non responsive Disabled Hyper-V and had no proble with 2008 R2 DC host. Started the three Hyper-V services and 10 minutes later was hung again. Hardware is HP DL380 G4 2 socket, 48 GB, Internal SAS controller 1.5TB C drive VMs .VHDs are on external SAS controller on a 1.5 TB RAID5 volume. Nothing in event log on either VMs or Hyper-V host.   Suppose you connect a trunk port from a VLAN capable network switch to a (VLAN incapable) consumer-grade network switch via a direct cable. Now the former switch send the later switch a 802.1Q-tagged Ethernet frame. What should the later switch do? Drop the frame? Forward the frame? Undefined behavior? • Sony Vaio CPU fan runs at full speed after installing Windows 8.1 preview

  I installed the Windows 8.1 preview on my Sony Vaio E Series 14P (http://www.sony.com.au/product/sve14a27cg) and now my CPU fan is running at full speed all the time. When I first start my computer it runs normally, but a few seconds after reaching the Windows login screen the fan speed will suddenly jump up to max. It's pretty loud, so I'm hoping there's a solution! I've tried updating my bios to the latest version but that didn't help. I've tried programs like SpeedFan, but that wasn't able to detect my CPU fan at all. My CPU usage and temperature is normal and doesn't warrant the max fan speed. • DNS Round-robin failover and load balancing

  Having read all of the questions and answers (1 2 3 and so on) on here relating to DNS load balancing, and Round-robin DNS, there's still a number of unanswered questions.. Large companies, and I'm looking at Google, Facebook and Twitter here, do present multiple A records. 1) If DNS loadbalancing/failover is so dodgy, why do large organisations do it? There seems to be very little mention of "DNS Pinning", despite this (PDF) paper about it. 2) Why is DNS Pinning so seldom mentioned? 3) Are there any concrete examples of which ISPs and so on actually do rewrite DNS TTLs? That said, I'm not entirely backing the side for using DNS for failover or any form of load balancing. For most networks, BGP diverse routing still seems to be a better fit. DNS rears it's ugly head again. :(

  I tested the speed of md5sum on a few Ubuntu 8.04 servers Pentium III 700 MHz: 52 MB/s Atom 1.6 GHz, 32-bit: 119 MB/s Core 2 (Yorkfield) 2.5GHz, 32-bit: 194 MB/s Core 2 (Yorkfield) 2.5GHz, 64-bit: 222 MB/s Then I downloaded a tool (by apt-get install) called md5deep and found that it's roughly 20% faster (as tested on the 32-bit Core 2 server). This makes me feel that the "vanilla" md5sum included in Ubuntu isn't the fastest one. Questions: Other than md5deep, are you aware of any MD5 calculators that are potentially faster than md5sum? (Answers for software from other OS are also welcomed.) If I want to compile md5sum myself, where can I download the source? What compiler options would you suggest for the Core 2 server? (note: gcc 4.2.4 in Ubuntu 8.04 does not seem to support -march=core2)

  Given an arbitrary single argument representing a file (or directory, device, etc), how do I get the absolute path of the argument? I've seen many answers to this question involving find/ls/stat/readlink and $PWD, but none that suits my need. It looks like the closest answer is ksh's "whence" command, but I need it to work in sh/bash. Assume a file, foo.txt, is located in my home directory, /Users/matthew/foo.txt. I need the following behavior, despite what my current working directory is (I'm calling the command "abs"): (PWD is ~) $ abs foo.txt /Users/matthew/foo.txt $ abs ~/foo.txt /Users/matthew/foo.txt $ abs ./foo.txt /Users/matthew/foo.txt $ abs /Users/matthew/foo.txt /Users/matthew/foo.txt What would "abs" really be? • Build NAS for Windows and Linux network

  I have a spare PC and I would like to setup a NAS that is accessible from Windows and Linux. I would like to avoid using Windows as an OS and would like something like Ubuntu or FreeNAS. My only concern is I don't want to have to install special software on each client. Is there a way to use Ubuntu or FreeNAS and have Windows machines access the files with installing a client on each Windows box? UPDATE Thanks for the answers. I wish I could choose more than one.   I have tomcat server behind the apache. I am using mod_ssl and reverse proxy to the tomcat. All are running at default ports. The full error is as follow. ack Proxy Error The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server. The proxy server could not handle the request POST /pages/doeditpage.action. Reason: Error reading from remote server If I clean the browser cache the error goes away and comes back after few attempts. I test the same on Chrome/Firefox/IE on Windows platform. Wondering it works perfectly on Linux based Chrome/Firefox. I googled a lot there are few answers at stack overflow but I am not able to find my answer. Is this a server side problem? because so many browsers cant be wrong at same time on Windows.

• Installing an EC2 (EBS based) instance on another AWS account

  We're moving from one AWS account to another. I have a couple of EC2 instances I would like to move over. These instances are EBS based. Googling around, I'm seeing all sorts of convoluted answers for how to appropriately launch this EBS based instance on a new account. Surely there has to be a simple way of going about this. As of right now, what I have done so far is backup the EB2 Volume as a snapshot. I then altered the permissions of the snapshot to allow the new AWS account number to be able to access it. I am not sure where to go from here. Do I have to create an image from the EBS snapshot? Upload it to S3? What's the next step(s)?

• Help setting up NSD daemon (DNS server)

  While searching for a secure dns server I came across the NSD project. I was really impressed by what seemed to me the best option out there that's open source. One problem thought their 'tutorial' is really not beginner friendly. I have basic DNS knoledge but what's in there is out of my league. I need to have multiple sites on this CentOS server I've recently got my hands on. They also need to receive email. Details: I have a master host and would love to set this in the way described in the rows that follow: masterhost.com -> ns1.masterhost.com mail.masterhost.com www.masterhost.com addonhost.com -> ns1.masterhost.com mail.masterhost.com www.addonhost.com And so on. • Redirect example.com to www.example.com VPS & Apache2

  I have a VPS and a domain name registered with the provider. When I enter www.example.com my site is displayed correctly, but entering example.com does not work. I am able to ping www.example.com. I added the following line to my apache2 default vhosts file: ServerName example.com ServerAlias www.example.com But this did not work. The VPS is a Debian5 OS. Any ideas? Note: There is no option via a provided control panel to add this, it's a basic package I purchased I know this post answers it but there are no extra comments and I'd like to know if it's the best way: way to redirect page to www using virtual host configuration in sites-available for apache2? • Bluetooth device won't re-add after being removed (Windows 7)

  I've got a SBH52 headset, it works fine on my android phone, then I tried to use it with my Windows 7 PC, then it won't work because Microsoft Windows dosen't have native support for A2DP connections and one of the answers on the previous link said that removing the device from "devices and printers", running this software and then re-add the device would solve the problem. But the big problem is that they won't pair again: I tried, hopelessly, the suggested fixes from Windows, it won't work. By the way, it is Windows 7 (x64), it just looks like Windows 8. I had this problem once many years ago with other PC and Bluetooth device, I remember it had something to do with drivers that were not removed and I tried to delete them from somewhere, and as far as I remember it worked, but no idea how. In short, how can I pair it again with my PC?

  I am looking at a number of possible options for load-balancing. So far, I am constrained to the following options: DNS server load-balancer, balancing to a cluster of tomcat servers, with terracotta for session replication. Pros - don't have to buy new kit. Cons - DNS lb can keep directing to a broken server. Hardware load-balancer, direct to cluster of tomcat servers. Pros - could have second box for failover lb. Cons - expense. Apache server load-balancer. Pros - apache's lb polls for broken servers. Cons - apache server is single point of failure, plus need to buy another server. Are there any other options I should consider? Thanks. Update: Thanks for all the answers so far +1's all round. Not accepting an answer yet, to keep more ideas coming.

• What Excel formats are (most) compatible with LibreOffice and Google Docs?

  I use Excel (and occasionally Numbers), but I want to be able to share with users of Google Docs and LibreOffice (and I may want to switch in the future). What's the most compatible format to save my Excel spreadsheets in? I'm asking as a question here rather than merely Googling for a list of formats that LibreOffice and GoogleDocs support (although I'm doing that too, and will post the answer if no one else does) because there are likely to be hidden "gotchas" that only someone who has experience using all of the above applications is going to know about. Answers that include personal experience will be preferred over those that only post a link to the relevant facts on google.com and libreoffice.com.

• MediaTemple tcpsndbuf QoS Alerts

  I'm hosting with MediaTemple on a (dv) Dedicated-Virtual 3.5 server. My site consists of a Wordpress blog, some custom PHP pages (nothing too intense), and I server 500-700 unique visitors per day. Despite my pretty modest numbers, I suffer from regular Apache crashes on account of QoS Alerts, mostly flagged as "tcpsndbuf". MediaTemple support -- usually tops -- has been pretty useless on this matter. I'm looking for answers as to how/why this is happening, advice on how to stop it. My website is a good portion of my livelihood, and downtime equates to lost income. Any and all help much appreciated. -Matt
