• What is the pixel clock setting on my monitor actually doing?

  I am experiencing display interference on a dell 24" flat panel monitor.I find that if I adjust the pixel clock settings up or down in the monitor's on-screen menus, the interference goes away for a while. The monitor is attached to a Macbook Pro using a mini display to VGA adapter. I have found that in a different house, I get the interference problem less so it might be related to electricity supply or possibly even ethernet powerline (total guess). What does the pixel clock setting actually do and does this behaviour point to a likely cause of the interference?

• BSOD doing wireless connection repair

  (This should maybe be asked on Super User, but currently it is only for beta users.) We have a Dell Latitude X1 which always gets a BSOD (page fault in non page area) after repair on wireless. Wireless works as long as we do not do repair. Have tried the following with no success: Have updated BIOS to latest version and updated drivers for Intel wireless to the latest version. Any other suggestions? For now we just do not do repair and maybe that is the solution?

  I've experienced some kernel panic after trying to compile gentoo kernel for a Sun UltraSPARC T5120 Server. The kernel panic came from a missing support for the SAS disk controller in the menu config. I've wasted so much time because I had no clue about the hardware I was using. I know that the kernel config depends on what you plan to do with your machine but I want to have a configuration file that at least match my hardware ! Is there a website or database that provides menuconfig's kernel configuration files for known or branded hardware like Dell Server or Apple computers ?

Here are a few tools we would like to work with: Redmine GIT Hosting a website/blog to show our work Hosting an internal and private development website/blog We haven't decided yet which OS we will install, but we were looking toward Ubuntu or Fedora. • X server not starting up after new kernel compilation

  I have compiled the Kernel on my 64-bit Debian XPS Studio 1340 Dell system. srikanth@debian:~ - 05:40:52 PM - $ uname -a Linux debian 2.6.32-5-amd64 #1 SMP Thu Mar 22 17:26:33 UTC 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux Kernel version that I have used and compiled from kernel.org is 2.6.35.13 I have nvidia installed on old kernel. I got the old config and I used the same config to compile the new kernel. Everything went well and I got two debian packages ( image and headers ) which I have installed on my system. When I select the new kernel on the boot menu and I go into it, the X server is not starting up possibly because I have to "rebuild" ( not sure how to do that ) according to this link: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/x-server-not-starting-after-kernel-compilation-605265/ Can you suggest how to do the rebuild on nvidia module so that I can start x ( without seeing any blank screen or error saying nvidia module is missing ) ? • Processor upgrade on a laptop vs. Ram upgrade. Also does ram always matter?

  I have a Dell Inspiron 14r (N4110) with an Intel Core i3 and 4gb of ram. It runs very smoothly, however gaming on this laptop is very limited. This is mostly because of integrated graphics but i have seen a computer with a Core i5, and very similar specs otherwise, run games that the N4110 cannot. This other computer has integrated graphics and 6gb of ram. I am wondering whether upgrading ram or upgrading the processor make the most difference in performance. Which setup would get better performance, an i5 with 4gb of ram or an i3 with 8 gb of ram? (Both with integrated graphics) Also, is there a certain point at which you have too much ram for the computer to ever possibly use? For instance is there really any difference in performance between 8 gb and 16 gb of ram?

• Windows 7 Line In Delay Issue [closed]

  Not sure if this question should be posted on a different stack exchange site, so if you find that it should not be posted here, please move it. Either way, if you know the solution, please advise. I'm running Windows 7 Pro 32-bit on my Dell Latitude 2100 netbook and I'm having an issue with the line in device/driver/functionality. The device & driver are stock: Driver Date: 7/13/2009 Driver Version: 6.1.7600.16385 I'm almost sure that the manufacturer of the sound card is RealTek. The problem is that there is a delay (when monitoring input) between the source and the speakers. My setup is bass guitar running through a 12' long instrument cable (1/4") with a 1/4" female to 1/8" male adapter into the line in port on the computer. Then the 15' long headphones/line out cable goes into a standard set of powered speakers. How do I get rid of this delay? Thanks for any help.

• How can I decrease the time spent reformatting / restoring user's workstations?

  I just working for a medium sized company (approx. 150 users). When user's workstations need to be reformatted for any variety of reasons, we reformat, reinstall windows from an oem disk, install drivers, install shop desired software, and restore user's documents from latest backup. While the process isn't very difficult it is very time consuming. What are some options simplify / speed up this process? Mostly a complete Windows shop with most servers running Win2k3 Enterprise and workstations running a variety of XP, Vista, and 7. Workstations are purchased through a variety of OEMs mostly Dell.

• Boot from Second SATA Drive

  I have a Dell Precision 490 Workstation, and I just had my other question answered, Install Ubuntu to drive B without impacting drive A, and now I'm having a boot sequence issue. The external drive is great, boots up fine on my laptop, but how do I tell my desktop to boot from my second SATA drive and not the first SATAdrive. My drive configuration as follows SATA-0: Windows SATA-1: DVDR SATA-2: Ubuntu When I choose the boot menu, the option I have is "Internal Hard Drive". I assume it searches all drives, and loads the first bootable one it finds (which happens to be Windows), but I'd like to be able to select the drive from a list. Has anyone experienced this? Is possible without disabling the first hard drive in the BIOS?

• Linux IO scheduler on databases with RAID

  Hi, I have a linux database(MySQL) server(Dell 2950) with a 6-disk RAID 10. The default IO scheduler on it is CFQ. However, from what I have read and heard, there is no need for a scheduler like CFQ when reordering/scheduling is also done by underlying RAID controller; on the contrary since it does not account underlying RAID configuration into account performance may actually degrade with CFQ. The primary concern is to reduce CPU usage and improve throughput. Also, I have seen recommendations of using noop/deadline IO scheduler for databases primarily because of the nature of their R/W access.

• Samsung TV connected to PC for Powerpoint

  I have a 42" Samsung LCD TV connected to a Dell computer with a PCI Radion 9000 via a 35' VGA cable. It's purpose is to run power point presentations over the TV for our retail store. I have tried every combination of button clicking on the video card options, and everything on the TV, and I still get black bars on the top and bottom of the image. It looks like I am watching a old wide screen movie on a full screen TV. The TV's suggested resolution is 1024x768, and that is what the output is set to. I have tried this with a nVida PCI card as well with the same results.

• Laptop changes resolution when the lid is closed/opened

  hi i've had a problem for the last couple of days where the resolution on my laptop changes when i close the lid i'm running windows xp professional sp2 on a dell inspiron 1501 the video chip is an ati radeon xpress 1150 according to the catalyst control center software i've got installed which i think came with the drivers or something i've seen this happen before but i installed an old game called road rash a couple days ago after seeing it mentioned on reddit and i'm wondering if it might be related anyone know how i can stop this from happening? i have a workaround where i can manually change the resolution to something else and then change it back but that's a lot of work to do every time i close the laptop which is a lot thanks!

• Debian 5.0.8 won't detect my ethernet adapter

  I'm installing Debian 5.0.8 on a Dell Latitude E6410 using the network install x86 CD. Unfortunately, it won't detect my Ethernet adapter. Specifically, I get the error: No Ethernet card was detected. If you know the name of the driver needed by your Ethernet card, you can select it from the list. lspci shows: 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation Device 10ea (rev 05) That should correspond to the e100e driver. But, if I select it from the list, the install CD still fails to detect it. Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 are able to use this device with no problem. Does anybody know what I can do to make Debian use my Ethernet adapter? Thanks, PaulH

• How to charge an iPhone on a Windows PC without Installing iTunes

  I want to be able to charge my iPhone on my work computer, which is running Windows Server 2008 SP1 64-Bit. When I plug the iPhone in with the USB cable, it will not charge. Windows attempts to locate a driver for the device but only comes up with a generic Camera device and even if I allow that to be installed, the iPhone still does not charge. I have checked the computer's BIOS settings and did not find anything relating to power on the USB devices. I also tried this on ports at the back of the computer in addition to those on the front. The PC is a Dell Optiplex 780. As far as I can tell USB devices do not charge unless Windows has installed an appropriate driver. Since it is a work computer I do not want to install iTunes which does include a driver. I have a workaround that I will post as an answer for reference.

  I just restarted my laptop to finish installing a Windows update and now it is stuck on please wait. I have tried a system restore but there is only one restore point in the list and it does not work for some reason... I also tried to do a refresh but it asks me for media. I plug in the usb I used to install windows 8 a while and go and says that the media failed to load. I'm kind of stuck on options now. I can't boot and I can't restore and it seems I cant format either! Is there anything anything else I can do to get things going?! I'm running Windows 8 on a dell xps 14 ultrabook. Win 8 is installed on an msata drive and booting using EFi.

• My laptop suppose to have 6 GB ram but it's only 2 GB installed

  My laptop is supposed to have 6 GB ram but it only detects 2 GB of it, so I don't know what to do. I searched the web for answer and what i get that there's 2 possible problem: 1- That 4 GB ram card is broken and not working 2- or the 2 ram card have a different path so the windows chose the path of the smaller ram card which would be the 2 GB ram I don't know what is the path in first place so I really don't know what to do. How would I troubleshoot, and work out why the 4 GB stick is not being detected? My laptop's specifications are as follows: Windows 7 Home premium 64- bit Operating system processor : intel (R) core(TM) i7 CPU Q740 @1.73 GHz 1.73GHz installed memory(RAM) : 2.00 GB (but it suppose to be 6 GB -_- ) My laptop is Dell and it's Model N5010

• FreeBSD 9 (amd64) reboot/shutdown process is very slow

  I have a Dell Poweredge 2900 III with FreeBSD 9 (amd64), the server uses mfi wich handles a raid10, I had to reboot the server, but notice that either when rebooting or shutting down the server, something is going wrong, besides taking to much time to reboot/shutdown, after rebooting I notice that that some ldap instances within some jails could'nt start and this was because the database was corrupted. This make me think that probably something was wrong with the disks or mfi card, but checking the disk array / logs everything seems to be working fine. My set up is something like this: Host server has the minimum base of FreeBSD 9 amd64, within I create some jails, the ones contain services like mysql, email, and some others ldap. With FreeBSD 7 and 8 I didn't notice this behavior but with FreeBSD 9 something is not working well. I did a clean installation of FreeBSD 9 and root filesystem is using ZFS. • Can I connect my ipod's earphones to my computer?

  My computer (recent model Dell z600) has 2 input devices on the front of the computer, 1 has an icon of headphones and the other is a Mic icon. When I plugin my earphones to the input device that has the headphones, and play some sound I don't hear anything from my earphones (sounds comes from built in speakers). I know when I plugin a USB headphone set, it switches over to those on but for some reason my earphones are not being picked up. Is it not compatible? • How to recover Windows Vista product key?

  Two years ago I've bought asus laptop with Windows Vista preinstalled. I also received recovery dvd with it. Now, I want to reinstall Windows and fully format the hard drive. However, the sticker with Windows product key under the laptop is unreadable. I tried recovering the key with ProduKey and similar software but they show another product key - it is different than the one from the sticker (I checked on another asus laptop and on my dell laptop). Do you know if I it is possible to reinstall the operating system with the product key obtained from ProduKey? If not, how can I retrieve the product key? It seems stupid that it was only placed on the sticker that is destroyed after some time if you frequently hold the laptop on your lap. I've tried ProduKey and Recover Keys and they show the same key. However, it's not the one from the sticker. Thanks in advance for help.

• 'DNS service isn't responding' in windows 7

  Hi All, I bought a brand new Dell Studio 1558 just last week. It has windows 7 home premium 64-bit installed on it. My friend who is occupying the adjacent room has a laptop with windows XP. Both of us are connecting to the same wireless router of the hotel. My friend is able to connect to the wireless network without any trouble, but when I try to connect, I get the error "DNS service isn't responding". I met two more people in the same hotel with win XP laptop and they too dont have any problem. I have gone to possibly all the forums and website but I haven't been able to fix this error :(. I have done all the basic troubleshooting but I have no luck yet. Pls help. • PS/2 mouse works with Windows 7 32-bit but not recognised by 64-bit, What to do?

  Our USB mouse was stolen and a PS/2 OK_520 Mouse that works OK on my Medion PC, running Windows 7 32-bit, if plugged in before booting, is not recognised by Windows 7 64-bit on a Dell INSPIRONone_19T with a 19" Touch Screen. (It is a communal computer available to all residents.) A USB mouse works OK and the Update Driver option reports: 'driver is up to date'. Without the USB Mouse, Device Manager/Mice shows only the Touch Screen as a Mouse. The Add New Hardware option searches but shows nothing and the Troubleshooter says ' device possibly not recognised, alterations made to system, try again.' but it is still not recognised after repeated re-boots. The BIOS does not seem to have any option to enable a PS/2 Mouse. The Mouse is very old so maybe it is not 64-bit compatible, or there is no 64-bit driver for one, but how to get one if the device is not recognised?

• Windows 7 starter will not shutdown or logoff

  Im having some problems with a friends netbook (a dell mini 10). It will not shutdown or logoff via the usual route. Whenever the shutdown/logoff button is clicked, it will briefly freeze (maybe for only a second) and then do nothing. Ive tried shutting down manually via the command line using shutdown /p but all to no avail, it just defaults back to flashing cursor in the command prompt. There doesnt seem to be any mention of a similar problem on google so i was wondering if anyone else had any ideas. Thanks oh and its runnning windows 7 starter.

• Are there any 17-20 inch monitors that support displayport?

  I've got dual monitors now (both 20 inch 1600x1200). After seeing the new eyefinity cards out there (and reading the CodingHorror post on three monitors) I've decided to get a third. It's time to upgrade my video card anyway. Since I don't already have a third monitor and will be buying one new, I figure it'd make sense to buy one that already had a DisplayPort interface so as to avoid the adapter issue. However, I can't seem to find any monitors on newegg that support this (it's not even an option in the power search, and a keyword search turned up only adapters and video cards). A quick google showed me several 30 inchers (like Dell's, but that's way too expensive, and I don't have that much room on my desk even if I had that money) and some 22 inch models. Again, I'm looking for a 17-20 inch with a DisplayPort interface built in. Any suggestions?

• How to create Restoration Partion?

  For some time now, when buying new computers (laptops in particular) from big name brands-like DELL, HP, TOSHIBA, etc.-most of them come with a "rescue" or "restore" partion instead of installation CD/DVD. Said partitions have everything needed to rebuild the factory installed OS, unfortunately they also include all crapware that the OEM installed on the machine. Is it there a way to custom create such a partition with out all the useless software included?. They seem quite appealing considering they only use about 10GB-20GB of space and offer the pretty much the same functionality as a complete system image/backup.
