  • "Pointers" with $ Syntax in /etc/environment

    - by Tyson Trautmann
    Is it valid to have "pointers" in /etc/environment using $FOO syntax? Right now my /etc/environment looks like this: JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk MAVEN_HOME=/usr/bin/apache-maven/apache-maven-3.0.4 M2_HOME=$MAVEN_HOME M2=$MAVEN_HOME/bin PATH=/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:$JAVA_HOME/bin:$MAVEN_HOME/bin I'm not getting the results that I'm expecting though: ~$ echo $JAVA_HOME /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk ~$ echo $MAVEN_HOME /usr/bin/apache-maven/apache-maven-3.0.4 ~$ echo $PATH /usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin/bin:/usr/games:$JAVA_HOME/bin:$MAVEN_HOME/bin

  • Can I use copyrighted images and music in my game? [duplicate]

    - by Aman Grover
This question already has an answer here: Using modified copyrighted music in non-commercial games 3 answers I am working on my first ever project , and I have used some copyrighted images(images taken from some other well recognized games). Is it even possible that I edit the images a little bit and then use them as royalty free images? If not, then can anyone tell me some web links from where I can get royalty free images?

  • What game systems exist which uses camera input?

    - by Marc Pilgaard
The group and I is in the middle of a semester project where we are currently researching on which game systems are using camera as input or as an interactive medium? We would like some help listing some of the game systems which uses camera input, as it seems hard to find other examples. Currently we know that webcam browser games uses camera input (Newgrounds webcam games), as well as the xbox kinect. I know this questions seems rather vague, though I still hope some people is capable of helping.

  • Terrain square loading

    - by AndroidXTr3meN
Games like Skyrim, Morrowind, and more are using quads or square to divide the terrain if im correct. The player is always at #5 1 | 2 | 3 4 | 5 | 6 7 | 8 | 9 So whenever you cross the border you unload and load the new "areas" But if the user goes just over the edge and then the second after goes back previous area a lot of unnecessary loading and unloading is done. Is there a general approach to this because I dont think games like skyrim have this issue? Cheers!

  • Simple 2 player server

    - by Sourabh Lal
I have recently started learning javascript and html and have developed simple 2 player games such as tick-tack-toe, battleship, and dots&boxes. However these 2 player games can only be played on one computer (i.e. the 2 players must sit together) However, I want to modify this so that one can play with a friend on a different computer. Any suggestions on how this is possible? Also since I am a beginner please do not assume that I know all the jargon.

  • Development of a Card Game Website [on hold]

    - by Correna Hurley
Yahoo did away with all of their "parlor-type" games on 3/31/14. There is a great demand to get these games back, but Yahoo has no plan to do so. I'd like to find someone who has the knowledge necessary to create such an "animal" and would be willing to give it a try. If someone from this forum would be so kind as to point me in the right direction to find such an individual, I'd be grateful. Thank you.

  • Is it possible to install Adobe Master Collection CS5.5 into ubuntu without using a Virtual Windows?

    - by Justanotherubuntuuser
I recently decided to install ubuntu, i formatted my pc and i installed both Ubuntu and Windows. Since it is hard sometimes to get games to work in ubuntu (specially the new ones) i decided to use Windows mostly for games and ubuntu for work applications, such as programming, the adobe suite and whatnot. Here's my question: Is there anyway i can use Adobe Master Collection within ubuntu without using virtual mode? I've been searching it all over the internet but i get nothing.

  • Techniques to prevent non-official clients in network gaming?

    - by UpTheCreek
In multi-player network games, what techniques exist to try to ensure that users are connecting with the official client application, and not some hacked client app? I realise there is probably no sure-fire way to do this, but rather I'm interested in techniques that can be employed to mitigate the problem. I'm especially interested in any techniques that can be used for web based games, but I imagine most can be applied generally. Thank you!

  • If I were to start an Android or iPhone app or game, what program should I use?

    - by John
I don't really know a lot about programming and the only things I do is using codes with Gamemaker, but I have read that it is too basic and it can't be used with iPhone or Android. Is there anything free that I can use to make games for those platforms? Or if not, any suggestions for engines or anything else? I was wondering about Unity, for example, is that a good investment to use for making games?

  • How can you store item data from a game?

    - by ThePlan
When I look at games such as warcraft 3, or Diablo, or basically any games that contain items in them I notice that each item is unique. They all have different stats, different graphics, different names. I took a wild guess that they don't use XML, although I know I might be wrong, but I just figured they use something that isn't easily human-editable to prevent casual hacking. How is data such as item attributes stored in a game (2d or 3d, I suppose it works the same way in both)?

  • Chester Devs Presentation and source code &ndash; &lsquo;Event Store - an introduction to a DSD for event sourcing and notifications&rsquo;

Presentation and source code My presentation, source code, Event Store runners and text files containing the various command line parameters used for curl is now available on GitHub; https://github.com/westleyl/ChesterDevs-EventStore. Don’t worry if you don’t have a GitHub account, you don’t need one, you can just click on the Download Zip button on the right hand menu to download all the files as a single ZIP file.  If all you want is the PowerPoint presentation, go to https://github.com/westleyl/ChesterDevs-EventStore/blob/master/Powerpoint/Huddle-EventStore.pptx, and click on the View Raw button. Downloading and installing Event Store and Tools Download Event Store http://download.geteventstore.com – I unzipped these files into C:\EventStore\v2.0.1 Download Curl from http://curl.haxx.se/download.html – I downloaded Win64 Generic (with SSL) and unzipped these files into C:\curl version 7.31.0 Running the tools I used in my presentation Demonstration 1 (running Event Store) You can use one of my Event Store runner command files to run the single node version of Event Store, using default ports of 2213 for HTTP and 1113  for TCP, and with a wildcard HTTP pattern.  Both take a single command line parameter to specify the location of the data and log files.  The runners assume the single node executable is located in C:\EventStore\v2.0.1, and will placed data files and logs beneath C:\EventStore\Data, i.e. RunEventStore.cmd TestData1 This will create data files in C:\EventStore\Data\TestData1\Data and log files in C:\EventStore\Data\TestData1\logs. If, when running Event Store you may see the following message, [03288,15,06:23:00.622] Failed to start http server Access is denied You will either need to run Event Store in an administrator console window, or you can use the netsh command to create a firewall permission to allow HTTP listening (this will need to be run, once, in an administrator console window), netsh http add urlacl url=http://*:2213/ user=liam You can always delete this later by running the delete; netsh http delete urlacl url=http://*:2213/ If you want to confirm that everything is running OK, open the management console in a browser by navigating to http://127.0.0.1:2213. If at any point you are asked for a user name and password use the default of ‘admin’/‘changeit’. Demonstration 2 (reading and adding data, curl) In my second demonstration I used curl directly from the console to read streams, write events and then read back those events. On GitHub I have included is a set of curl commands, CurlCommandLine.txt, and a sample data file, SampleData.json, to load an event into a DDDNorth3 stream. As there is not much data in the Event Store at this point I used the $stats-127.0.0.1:2113 which is a stream containing performance statistics for Event Store and is updated every 30 seconds (default). Demonstration 3 (projections) On GitHub I have included a sample projection, Projection-ByRoom.txt, which will create streams based on the room on which a session was held on the DDDNorth3 agenda. Browse to the management console, http://127.0.0.1:2213.  Click on Projections, New Projection, give it a name, Sessions-ByRoom, and copy in the JavaScript in the Projection-ByRoom.txt file.  Select Continuous, tick Emit Enabled and then click on Post. It should run immediately. You may by challenged for the administration login for the management console, if so use the default user name and password; 'admin'/'changeit'. Demonstration 4 (C# client) The final demonstration was the Visual Studio 2012 project using the Event Store client – referenced directly as C:\EventStore\v2.0.1\EventStore.ClientAPI.dll, although you can switch this to the latest Event Store client NuGet package. The source code provides a console app for viewing projections with the projection manager (HTTP connection), as well as containing a full set of data for the entire DDDNorth3 agenda.  It also deals with the strategy for reading newest events backwards to older events and ignoring older events that have been superseded. And lastly, a thank you to all those delegates who gave up their free time on a Saturday to spend a day dashing between lecture rooms, including a late change to my room which saw 40 people having to brave a journey between buildings in the fine drizzle. • Get and Set property accessors are ‘actually’ methods

    - by nmarun
Well, they are ‘special’ methods, but they indeed are methods. See the class below: 1: public class Person 2: { 3: private string _name; 4:  5: public string Name 6: { 7: get 8: { 9: return _name; 10: } 11: set 12: { 13: if (value == "aaa") 14: { 15: throw new ArgumentException("Invalid Name"); 16: } 17: _name = value; 18: } 19: } 20:  21: public void Save() 22: { 23: Console.WriteLine("Saving..."); 24: } 25: } Ok, so a class with a field, a property with the get and set accessors and a method. Now my calling code says: 1: static void Main() 2: { 3: try 4: { 5: Person person1 = new Person 6: { 7: Name = "aaa", 8: }; 9:  10: } 11: catch (Exception ex) 12: { 13: Console.WriteLine(ex.Message); 14: Console.WriteLine(ex.StackTrace); 15: Console.WriteLine("--------------------"); 16: } 17: } When the code is run, you’ll get the following exception message displayed: Now, you see the first line of the stack trace where it says that the exception was thrown in the method set_Name(String value). Wait a minute, we have not declared any method with that name in our Person class. Oh no, we actually have. When you create a property, this is what happens behind the screen. The CLR creates two methods for each get and set property accessor. Let’s look at the signature once again: set_Name(String value) This also tells you where the ‘value’ keyword comes from in our set property accessor. You’re actually wiring up a method parameter to a field. 1: set 2: { 3: if (value == "aaa") 4: { 5: throw new ArgumentException("Invalid Name"); 6: } 7: _name = value; 8: } Digging deeper on this, I ran the ILDasm tool and this is what I see: We see the ‘free’ constructor (named .ctor) that the compiler gives us, the _name field, the Name property and the Save method. We also see the get_Name and set_Name methods. In order to compare the Save and the set_Name methods, I double-clicked on the two methods and this is what I see: The ‘.method’ keyword tells that both Save and set_Name are both methods (no guessing there!). Seeing the set_Name method as a public method did kinda surprise me. So I said, why can’t I do a person1.set_Name(“abc”) since it is declared as public. This cannot be done because the get_Name and set_Name methods have an extra attribute called ‘specialname’. This attribute is used to identify an IL (Intermediate Language) token that can be treated with special care by the .net language. So the thumb-rule is that any method with the ‘specialname’ attribute cannot be generally called / invoked by the user (a simple test using intellisense proves this). Their functionality is exposed through other ways. In our case, this is done through the property itself. The same concept gets extended to constructors as well making them special methods too. These so-called ‘special’ methods can be identified through reflection. 1: static void ReflectOnPerson() 2: { 3: Type personType = typeof(Person); 4:  5: MethodInfo[] methods = personType.GetMethods(); 6:  7: for (int i = 0; i < methods.Length; i++) 8: { 9: Console.Write("Method: {0}", methods[i].Name); 10: // Determine whether or not each method is a special name. 11: if (methods[i].IsSpecialName) 12: { 13: Console.Write(" has 'SpecialName' attribute"); 14: } 15: Console.WriteLine(); 16: } 17: } Line 11 shows the ‘IsSpecialName’ boolean property. So a method with a ‘specialname’ attribute gets mapped to the IsSpecialName property. The output is displayed as: Wuhuuu! There they are.. our special guests / methods. Verdict: Getting to know the internals… helps!

  • Best way to represent Gender in a class library used in multilingual applications

    - by Hauge
I'm creating class library with some commonly used classes like persons, addresses etc. This library will be used in an multilingual application, and I am looking for the most convenient way to represent a persons gender. Ideally I would like to be able to code like this: Person person = new Person { Gender = Genders.Male, FirstName = "Nice", LastName = "Dude" } if (person.Gender == Genders.Male) Console.WriteLine("person is Male"); Console.WriteLine(person.Gender); //Should output: Male Console.WriteLine(person.Gender.ToString("da-DK")); //Should output the name of the gender in the language provided List<Gender> genders = Genders.GetAll(); foreach(Gender gender in genders) { Console.WriteLine(gender.ToString()); Console.WriteLine(gender.ToString("da-DK")); } What would you do? An enumeration and a specialized Gender class, but what about the localization then? Regards Jesper Hauge

  • Accessing HTML 5 Video Progress Event with jQuery

    - by jnolte
Hello All, The below is for an HTML5 video player event. My partner and I have been stumped for a very large portion of the day on this issue and hope someone can lend some insight on the issue. We have been able to access the progress event with plain js as seen below but when trying to access this with jQuery we get undefined in console. Any help/ recommendations are greatly appreciated. //JS - Works like a charm document.addEventListener("DOMContentLoaded", init, false); function init() { var v = document.getElementById('test-vid'); console.log(v) v.addEventListener('progress', progress, false); } function progress(e) { console.log(e.lengthComputable + ' ' + e.total + ' ' + e.loaded); } // jQuery - NO BUENO - Undefined rendered in console var vid = $('#test-vid'); $(vid).bind("progress", function(e){ console.log(e.total + ' ' + e.loaded + ' ' + e.lengthComputable ); }); Thanks in advance, JN

  • How to programatically read native DLL imports in C#?

    - by Eric
The large hunk of C# code below is intended to print the imports of a native DLL. I copied it from from this link and modified it very slightly, just to use LoadLibraryEx as Mike Woodring does here. I find that when I call the Foo.Test method with the original example's target, MSCOREE.DLL, it prints all the imports fine. But when I use other dlls like GDI32.DLL or WSOCK32.DLL the imports do not get printed. What's missing from this code that would let it print all the imports as, for example, DUMPBIN.EXE does? (Is there a hint I'm not grokking in the original comment that says, "using mscoree.dll as an example as it doesnt export any thing"?) Here's the extract that just shows how it's being invoked: public static void Test() { // WORKS: var path = @"c:\windows\system32\mscoree.dll"; // NO ERRORS, BUT NO IMPORTS PRINTED EITHER: //var path = @"c:\windows\system32\gdi32.dll"; //var path = @"c:\windows\system32\wsock32.dll"; var hLib = LoadLibraryEx(path, 0, DONT_RESOLVE_DLL_REFERENCES | LOAD_IGNORE_CODE_AUTHZ_LEVEL); TestImports(hLib, true); } And here is the whole code example: namespace PETest2 { [StructLayout(LayoutKind.Explicit)] public unsafe struct IMAGE_IMPORT_BY_NAME { [FieldOffset(0)] public ushort Hint; [FieldOffset(2)] public fixed char Name[1]; } [StructLayout(LayoutKind.Explicit)] public struct IMAGE_IMPORT_DESCRIPTOR { #region union /// <summary> /// CSharp doesnt really support unions, but they can be emulated by a field offset 0 /// </summary> [FieldOffset(0)] public uint Characteristics; • How can I find out if an data- attribute is set to an empty value?

    - by Stephan Wagner
Is there a way to find out if an data- attribute is set to an empty value or if it is not set at all? See this fiddle example (Check the console when clicking on the elements): http://jsfiddle.net/StephanWagner/yy8qvwfp/ <div onclick="console.log($(this).attr('data-test'))">undefined</div> <div data-test="" onclick="console.log($(this).attr('data-test'))">empty</div> <!-- this one will also return an empty value --> <div data-test onclick="console.log($(this).attr('data-test'))">null</div> <div data-test="value" onclick="console.log($(this).attr('data-test'))">value</div> Im having the issue with the third example. I need to know if the attribute actually is set to an empty value or if it is not set at all. Is that actually possible? EDIT: The reason I'm asking is that I'm updating content with the attributes value, so data-test="" should update the content to an empty value, but data-test should do nothing at all

  • Object's field cannot be accessed after $.ajax call in success function - it is undefined

    - by dragonfly
I have a $.ajax call and and server returns JSON. This is my call: var result; // tmp variable just for playing with Chrome console $.ajax({ type: "GET", url: "ashxJSON.ashx", data: { name: "some sample data" }, contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8", dataType: "json", success: function (msg) { result = msg; console.log(msg); $("#output").append("<p>" + msg.message + "</p>"); }, error: function (jqXHR, textStatus, errorThrown) { console.log(textStatus); console.log(errorThrown); } }); Server returns exactly this string: { "messsage": "Hello World to ..."} And now, when I: console.log(msg) I see: Object messsage: "Hello World to..." proto: Object But when I access msg.message or msg["message"] I see: undefined What is wrong with me / that msg object?

  • Visual Studio 2005 Build Order

    - by user77826
I have a Web Application. Sometimes I want to debug a console app that is within the solution. Why is it that when I right click on it and select debug, it builds every single webpage and libraries, which takes a while. When I look at build dependencies for the console app, it lists everything in the solution as the order and tells me to go to build order to change it. In build order, everything checks out... I only have checked the libraries that this console app needs. I also tried setting this console app as a start up project. Same thing... How do I get it so when I want to debug this console app, it only builds that and runs instead of building the entire solution before running?

  • JavaScript Prototype and Encapsulation

    - by Adam Davies
    Sorry I'm probably being a realy noob here...but: I have the following javascript object: jeeni.TextField = (function(){ var tagId; privateMethod = function(){ console.log("IN: privateMethod"); } publicMethod = function(){ console.log("IN: publicMethod: " + this.tagId); } jeeni.TextField = function(id){ console.log("Constructor"); this.tagId = id; } jeeni.TextField.prototype = { constructor: jeeni.TextField, foo: publicMethod }; return jeeni.TextField; }()); Now when I run the following code I get the corresponding result: var textField1 = new jeeni.TextField(21); // Outputs: Constructor textField1.foo(); // Outputs: IN: publicMethod: 21 console.log(textField1.tagId); // Outputs: 21 console.log(textField1.privateMethod); // Outputs: undefined So my question is why is privateMethod hidden and tagId is not. I want them both to be private scope. Please help a noob. Thanks

  • Check for element equality in an animation function.

    - by Zardoz
    I have the the below code and would expect that in the first pass of the fadeTo function "yes" would be printed as those first two console logs tell me it is the same element. But it doesn't recognize them as equal. What do I miss here? var tds = self.element.find("td:nth-child(" + (columnIndex + 1) + ")"); tds.fadeTo(options.columnFadeOutTime, 0, function() { window.console.log(tds.first()); window.console.log($(this)); if ($(this) == tds.first()) { window.console.log("yes"); } else { window.console.log("no"); } }

  • Take,Skip and Reverse Operator in Linq

    - by Jalpesh P. Vadgama
I have found three more new operators in Linq which is use full in day to day programming stuff. Take,Skip and Reverse. Here are explanation of operators how it works. Take Operator: Take operator will return first N number of element from entities. Skip Operator: Skip operator will skip N number of element from entities and then return remaining elements as a result. Reverse Operator: As name suggest it will reverse order of elements of entities. Here is the examples of operators where i have taken simple string array to demonstrate that. C#, using GeSHi 1.0.8.6 using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text;     namespace ConsoleApplication1 {     class Program     {         static void Main(string[] args)         {             string[] a = { "a", "b", "c", "d" };                           Console.WriteLine("Take Example");             var TkResult = a.Take(2);             foreach (string s in TkResult)             {                 Console.WriteLine(s);             }               Console.WriteLine("Skip Example");             var SkResult = a.Skip(2);             foreach (string s in SkResult)             {                 Console.WriteLine(s);             }               Console.WriteLine("Reverse Example");             var RvResult = a.Reverse();             foreach (string s in RvResult)             {                 Console.WriteLine(s);             }                       }     } } Parsed in 0.020 seconds at 44.65 KB/s Here is the output as expected. hope this will help you.. • Solving Euler Project Problem Number 1 with Microsoft Axum

    - by Jeff Ferguson
Note: The code below applies to version 0.3 of Microsoft Axum. If you are not using this version of Axum, then your code may differ from that shown here. I have just solved Problem 1 of Project Euler using Microsoft Axum. The problem statement is as follows: If we list all the natural numbers below 10 that are multiples of 3 or 5, we get 3, 5, 6 and 9. The sum of these multiples is 23. Find the sum of all the multiples of 3 or 5 below 1000. My Axum-based solution is as follows: namespace EulerProjectProblem1{ // http://projecteuler.net/index.php?section=problems&id=1 // // If we list all the natural numbers below 10 that are multiples of 3 or 5, we get 3, 5, 6 and 9. // The sum of these multiples is 23. // Find the sum of all the multiples of 3 or 5 below 1000. channel SumOfMultiples { input int Multiple1; input int Multiple2; input int UpperBound; output int Sum; } agent SumOfMultiplesAgent : channel SumOfMultiples { public SumOfMultiplesAgent() { int Multiple1 = receive(PrimaryChannel::Multiple1); int Multiple2 = receive(PrimaryChannel::Multiple2); int UpperBound = receive(PrimaryChannel::UpperBound); int Sum = 0; for(int Index = 1; Index < UpperBound; Index++) { if((Index % Multiple1 == 0) || (Index % Multiple2 == 0)) Sum += Index; } PrimaryChannel::Sum <-- Sum; } } agent MainAgent : channel Microsoft.Axum.Application { public MainAgent() { var SumOfMultiples = SumOfMultiplesAgent.CreateInNewDomain(); SumOfMultiples::Multiple1 <-- 3; SumOfMultiples::Multiple2 <-- 5; SumOfMultiples::UpperBound <-- 1000; var Sum = receive(SumOfMultiples::Sum); System.Console.WriteLine(Sum); System.Console.ReadLine(); PrimaryChannel::ExitCode <-- 0; } }} Let’s take a look at the various parts of the code. I begin by setting up a channel called SumOfMultiples that accepts three inputs and one output. The first two of the three inputs will represent the two possible multiples, which are three and five in this case. The third input will represent the upper bound of the problem scope, which is 1000 in this case. The lone output of the channel represents the sum of all of the matching multiples: channel SumOfMultiples{ input int Multiple1; input int Multiple2; input int UpperBound; output int Sum;} I then set up an agent that uses the channel. The agent, called SumOfMultiplesAgent, received the three inputs from the channel sent to the agent, stores the results in local variables, and performs the for loop that iterates from 1 to the received upper bound. The agent keeps track of the sum in a local variable and stores the sum in the output portion of the channel: agent SumOfMultiplesAgent : channel SumOfMultiples{ public SumOfMultiplesAgent() { int Multiple1 = receive(PrimaryChannel::Multiple1); int Multiple2 = receive(PrimaryChannel::Multiple2); int UpperBound = receive(PrimaryChannel::UpperBound); int Sum = 0; for(int Index = 1; Index < UpperBound; Index++) { if((Index % Multiple1 == 0) || (Index % Multiple2 == 0)) Sum += Index; } PrimaryChannel::Sum <-- Sum; }} The application’s main agent, therefore, simply creates a new SumOfMultiplesAgent in a new domain, prepares the channel with the inputs that we need, and then receives the Sum from the output portion of the channel: agent MainAgent : channel Microsoft.Axum.Application{ public MainAgent() { var SumOfMultiples = SumOfMultiplesAgent.CreateInNewDomain(); SumOfMultiples::Multiple1 <-- 3; SumOfMultiples::Multiple2 <-- 5; SumOfMultiples::UpperBound <-- 1000; var Sum = receive(SumOfMultiples::Sum); System.Console.WriteLine(Sum); System.Console.ReadLine(); PrimaryChannel::ExitCode <-- 0; }} The result of the calculation (which, by the way, is 233,168) is sent to the console using good ol’ Console.WriteLine().
