• Flex 3 Close UrlLoader throws exception

- by gmoniey
I am trying to simulate a 'HEAD' method using UrlLoader; essentially, I just want to check for the presence of a file without downloading the entire thing. I figured I would just use HttpStatusEvent, but the following code throws an exception (one that I can't wrap in a try/catch block) when you run in debug mode. <mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute" initialize="init()"> <mx:Script> private static const BIG_FILE:String = "http://www.archive.org/download/gspmovvideotestIMG0021mov/IMG_0021.mov"; private var _loader:URLLoader; private function init():void { _loader = new URLLoader(); _loader.addEventListener(HTTPStatusEvent.HTTP_STATUS, statusHandler); _loader.addEventListener(IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR, errorHandler); _loader.addEventListener(SecurityErrorEvent.SECURITY_ERROR, errorHandler); _loader.load(new URLRequest(BIG_FILE)); } public function unload():void { try { _loader.close(); _loader.removeEventListener(HTTPStatusEvent.HTTP_STATUS, statusHandler); _loader.removeEventListener(IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR, errorHandler); _loader.removeEventListener(SecurityErrorEvent.SECURITY_ERROR, errorHandler); } catch(error:Error) { status.text = error.message; } } private function errorHandler(event:Event):void { status.text = "error"; unload(); } private function statusHandler(event:HTTPStatusEvent):void { if(event.status.toString().match(/^2/)) { status.text = "success"; unload(); } else { errorHandler(event); } } </mx:Script> <mx:Label id="status" /> I tried using ProgressEvents instead, but it seems that some 404 pages return content, so the status event will correctly identify if the page exists. Anyone have any ideas?

• A Look Inside JSR 360 - CLDC 8

- by Roger Brinkley
If you didn't notice during JavaOne the Java Micro Edition took a major step forward in its consolidation with Java Standard Edition when JSR 360 was proposed to the JCP community. Over the last couple of years there has been a focus to move Java ME back in line with it's big brother Java SE. We see evidence of this in JCP itself which just recently merged the ME and SE/EE Executive Committees into a single Java Executive Committee. But just before that occurred JSR 360 was proposed and approved for development on October 29. So let's take a look at what changes are now being proposed. In a way JSR 360 is returning back to the original roots of Java ME when it was first introduced. It was indeed a subset of the JDK 4 language, but as Java progressed many of the language changes were not implemented in the Java ME. Back then the tradeoff was still a functionality, footprint trade off but the major market was feature phones. Today the market has changed and CLDC, while it will still target feature phones, will have it primary emphasis on embedded devices like wireless modules, smart meters, health care monitoring and other M2M devices. The major changes will come in three areas: language feature changes, library changes, and consolidating the Generic Connection Framework. There have been three Java SE versions that have been implemented since JavaME was first developed so the language feature changes can be divided into changes that came in JDK 5 and those in JDK 7, which mostly consist of the project Coin changes. There were no language changes in JDK 6 but the changes from JDK 5 are: Assertions - Assertions enable you to test your assumptions about your program. For example, if you write a method that calculates the speed of a particle, you might assert that the calculated speed is less than the speed of light. In the example code below if the interval isn't between 0 and and 1,00 the an error of "Invalid value?" would be thrown. private void setInterval(int interval) { assert interval > 0 && interval <= 1000 : "Invalid value?" } Generics - Generics add stability to your code by making more of your bugs detectable at compile time. Code that uses generics has many benefits over non-generic code with: Stronger type checks at compile time. Elimination of casts. Enabling programming to implement generic algorithms. Enhanced for Loop - the enhanced for loop allows you to iterate through a collection without having to create an Iterator or without having to calculate beginning and end conditions for a counter variable. The enhanced for loop is the easiest of the new features to immediately incorporate in your code. In this tip you will see how the enhanced for loop replaces more traditional ways of sequentially accessing elements in a collection. void processList(Vector<string> list) { for (String item : list) { ... Autoboxing/Unboxing - This facility eliminates the drudgery of manual conversion between primitive types, such as int and wrapper types, such as Integer. Hashtable<Integer, string=""> data = new Hashtable<>(); void add(int id, String value) { data.put(id, value); } Enumeration - Prior to JDK 5 enumerations were not typesafe, had no namespace, were brittle because they were compile time constants, and provided no informative print values. JDK 5 added support for enumerated types as a full-fledged class (dubbed an enum type). In addition to solving all the problems mentioned above, it allows you to add arbitrary methods and fields to an enum type, to implement arbitrary interfaces, and more. Enum types provide high-quality implementations of all the Object methods. They are Comparable and Serializable, and the serial form is designed to withstand arbitrary changes in the enum type. enum Season {WINTER, SPRING, SUMMER, FALL}; } private Season season; void setSeason(Season newSeason) { season = newSeason; } Varargs - Varargs eliminates the need for manually boxing up argument lists into an array when invoking methods that accept variable-length argument lists. The three periods after the final parameter's type indicate that the final argument may be passed as an array or as a sequence of arguments. Varargs can be used only in the final argument position. void warning(String format, String... parameters) { .. for(String p : parameters) { ...process(p);... } ... } Static Imports -The static import construct allows unqualified access to static members without inheriting from the type containing the static members. Instead, the program imports the members either individually or en masse. Once the static members have been imported, they may be used without qualification. The static import declaration is analogous to the normal import declaration. Where the normal import declaration imports classes from packages, allowing them to be used without package qualification, the static import declaration imports static members from classes, allowing them to be used without class qualification. import static data.Constants.RATIO; ... double r = Math.cos(RATIO * theta); Annotations - Annotations provide data about a program that is not part of the program itself. They have no direct effect on the operation of the code they annotate. There are a number of uses for annotations including information for the compiler, compiler-time and deployment-time processing, and run-time processing. They can be applied to a program's declarations of classes, fields, methods, and other program elements. @Deprecated public void clear(); The language changes from JDK 7 are little more familiar as they are mostly the changes from Project Coin: String in switch - Hey it only took us 18 years but the String class can be used in the expression of a switch statement. Fortunately for us it won't take that long for JavaME to adopt it. switch (arg) { case "-data": ... case "-out": ... Binary integral literals and underscores in numeric literals - Largely for readability, the integral types (byte, short, int, and long) can also be expressed using the binary number system. and any number of underscore characters (_) can appear anywhere between digits in a numerical literal. byte flags = 0b01001111; long mask = 0xfff0_ff08_4fff_0fffl; Multi-catch and more precise rethrow - A single catch block can handle more than one type of exception. In addition, the compiler performs more precise analysis of rethrown exceptions than earlier releases of Java SE. This enables you to specify more specific exception types in the throws clause of a method declaration. catch (IOException | InterruptedException ex) { logger.log(ex); throw ex; } Type Inference for Generic Instance Creation - Otherwise known as the diamond operator, the type arguments required to invoke the constructor of a generic class can be replaced with an empty set of type parameters (<>) as long as the compiler can infer the type arguments from the context. map = new Hashtable<>(); Try-with-resource statement - The try-with-resources statement is a try statement that declares one or more resources. A resource is an object that must be closed after the program is finished with it. The try-with-resources statement ensures that each resource is closed at the end of the statement. try (DataInputStream is = new DataInputStream(...)) { return is.readDouble(); } Simplified varargs method invocation - The Java compiler generates a warning at the declaration site of a varargs method or constructor with a non-reifiable varargs formal parameter. Java SE 7 introduced a compiler option -Xlint:varargs and the annotations @SafeVarargs and @SuppressWarnings({"unchecked", "varargs"}) to supress these warnings. On the library side there are new features that will be added to satisfy the language requirements above and some to improve the currently available set of APIs. The library changes include: Collections update - New Collection, List, Set and Map, Iterable and Iteratator as well as implementations including Hashtable and Vector. Most of the work is too support generics String - New StringBuilder and CharSequence as well as a Stirng formatter. The javac compiler now uses the the StringBuilder instead of String Buffer. Since StringBuilder is synchronized there is a performance increase which has necessitated the wahat String constructor works. Comparable interface - The comparable interface works with Collections, making it easier to reuse. Try with resources - Closeable and AutoCloseable Annotations - While support for Annotations is provided it will only be a compile time support. SuppressWarnings, Deprecated, Override NIO - There is a subset of NIO Buffer that have been in use on the of the graphics packages and needs to be pulled in and also support for NIO File IO subset. Platform extensibility via Service Providers (ServiceLoader) - ServiceLoader interface dos late bindings of interface to existing implementations. It helpe to package an interface and behavior of the implementation at a later point in time.Provider classes must have a zero-argument constructor so that they can be instantiated during loading. They are located and instantiated on demand and are identified via a provider-configuration file in the METAINF/services resource directory. This is a mechansim from Java SE. import com.XYZ.ServiceA; ServiceLoader<ServiceA> sl1= new ServiceLoader(ServiceA.class); Resources: META-INF/services/com.XYZ.ServiceA: ServiceAProvider1 ServiceAProvider2 ServiceAProvider3 META-INF/services/ServiceB: ServiceBProvider1 ServiceBProvider2 From JSR - I would rather use this list I think The Generic Connection Framework (GCF) was previously specified in a number of different JSRs including CLDC, MIDP, CDC 1.2, and JSR 197. JSR 360 represents a rare opportunity to consolidated and reintegrate parts that were duplicated in other specifications into a single specification, upgrade the APIs as well provide new functionality. The proposal is to specify a combined GCF specification that can be used with Java ME or Java SE and be backwards compatible with previous implementations. Because of size limitations as well as the complexity of the some features like InvokeDynamic and Unicode 6 will not be included. Additionally, any language or library changes in JDK 8 will be not be included. On the upside, with all the changes being made, backwards compatibility will still be maintained. JSR 360 is a major step forward for Java ME in terms of platform modernization, language alignment, and embedded support. If you're interested in following the progress of this JSR see the JSR's java.net project for details of the email lists, discussions groups.

• Implementing Java Priority Queue

- by Kay
public class PriorityQueue<T> { private PriorityNode<T> head, tail; private int numItems; public PriorityQueue(){ numItems = 0; head=null; tail=null; } public void add(int priority, T value){ PriorityNode<T> newNode = new PriorityNode<T>(priority,value); if(numItems == 0){ head = newNode; tail = newNode; } else{ head.setNext(newNode); head = newNode; } } } Where PriorityNode is defined as: public class PriorityNode<T> implements Comparable<T> { private T value; private PriorityNode<T> next; private int priority; public PriorityNode(int priority,T newValue){ value = newValue; next = null; priority = 0; } public PriorityNode(T newValue){ value = newValue; next = null; priority = 0; } public void setPriority(int priority){ this.priority = priority; } public int getPriority(){ return this.priority; } public T getValue(){ return value; } public PriorityNode<T> getNext(){ return next; } public void setNext(PriorityNode<T> nextNode){ this.next = nextNode; } public void setValue(T newValue){ value = newValue; } public int compareTo(int pri) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub if(this.priority<pri){ return -1; } else if(this.priority == pri){ return 0; } else{ return 1; } } } I'm having a lot of difficulty using the Comparator here and implementing a priority queue - please point me in the right direction.

• zoom a JPanel and all of its components

- by user253530
I have a big JPanel which holds many TileMapping objects (TileMapping extends JPanel). I want to zoom the big JPanel and all of its components to be scaled aswell. A TileMapping has an image which of course has to be zoomed as well. here is my TileMapping class public class TileMapping extends JPanel { private double zoom = 1.0; private Mapping mapping; private int height; private int width; private int xCoord; private int yCoord; TileMapping(Mapping m, int w, int h, int x, int y) { super(); mapping = m; height = h; width = w; this.xCoord = x; this.yCoord = y; this.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(w, h)); } public int getXcoord() { return xCoord; } public int getYcoord() { return yCoord; } public Mapping getMapping() { return mapping; } public void setMapping(Mapping m) { mapping = m; } public void originalSize() { zoom = 1; } public void zoomIn() { zoom += 0.2; } public void zoomOut() { zoom -= 0.2; } @Override public void paintComponent(Graphics g) { Graphics2D g2d = (Graphics2D) g; if (mapping.getImage() != null) { BufferedImage bg = mapping.getImage(); g2d.scale(zoom, zoom); g2d.drawImage(bg, 0, 0, width, height, this); } else { g2d.scale(zoom, zoom); this.setBackground(Color.white); } } } I need to know how i should continue this on the main JPanel which is populated using this code: This is part of a MapWindow class. if you carefully read the code you will understand what i'm talking about. Basically this is a Tile MapEditor and I am simulating a Tile as a JPanel which holds the mapping object (mapping is a binding between an ASCII character and an image) you place. private void populateMapPanel(Map map) { GridBagConstraints c = new GridBagConstraints(); mapPanel.setLayout(new GridBagLayout()); for (int i = 0; i < map.getMapGrid().getRows(); i++) { for (int j = 0; j < map.getMapGrid().getColumns(); j++) { tile = new TileMapping(map.getMapItem(i, j), cellSize, cellSize, i, j); tile.setBorder(new LineBorder(Color.black)); tile.addMouseListener(this); tile.addMouseMotionListener(this); c.gridx = i; c.gridy = j; mapPanel.add(tile, c); } } mapPanel.validate(); mapPanel.repaint(); } I need to know how to do the following: 1. When the user presses Zoom In the mapPanel should zoom in and also all the images in the smaller panels. 2. when the user click and drag over the TileMappings an image should be painted on them and this image should get scaled of course if the mapPanel is zoomed. Pseudo code, ideas, hints, java code ...anything would be helpful. Thank you

• Use of Java constructors in persistent entities

- by Mr Morgan
Hello I'm new to JPA and using persistence in Java anyway and I have two questions I can't quite work out: I have generated tags as: @JoinColumn(name = "UserName", referencedColumnName = "UserName") @ManyToOne(optional = false) private User userName; @JoinColumn(name = "DatasetNo", referencedColumnName = "DatasetNo") @ManyToOne(optional = false) private Dataset datasetNo; But in one of the constructors for the class, no reference is made to columns UserName or DatasetNo whereas all other columns in the class are referenced in the constructor. Can anyone tell me why this is? Both columns UserName and DatasetNo are 'foreign keys' on the entity Visualisation which corresponds to a database table of the same name. I can't quite work out the ORM. And when using entity classes, or POJO, is it better to have class variables like: private User userName; Where an instance of a class is specified or simply the key of that class instance like: private String userName; Thanks Mr Morgan.

• Sensible unit test possible?

- by nkr1pt
Could a sensible unit test be written for this code which extracts a rar archive by delegating it to a capable tool on the host system if one exists? I can write a test case based on the fact that my machine runs linux and the unrar tool is installed, but if another developer who runs windows would check out the code the test would fail, although there would be nothing wrong with the extractor code. I need to find a way to write a meaningful test which is not binded to the system and unrar tool installed. How would you tackle this? public class Extractor { private EventBus eventBus; private ExtractCommand[] linuxExtractCommands = new ExtractCommand[]{new LinuxUnrarCommand()}; private ExtractCommand[] windowsExtractCommands = new ExtractCommand[]{}; private ExtractCommand[] macExtractCommands = new ExtractCommand[]{}; @Inject public Extractor(EventBus eventBus) { this.eventBus = eventBus; } public boolean extract(DownloadCandidate downloadCandidate) { for (ExtractCommand command : getSystemSpecificExtractCommands()) { if (command.extract(downloadCandidate)) { eventBus.fireEvent(this, new ExtractCompletedEvent()); return true; } } eventBus.fireEvent(this, new ExtractFailedEvent()); return false; } private ExtractCommand[] getSystemSpecificExtractCommands() { String os = System.getProperty("os.name"); if (Pattern.compile("linux", Pattern.CASE_INSENSITIVE).matcher(os).find()) { return linuxExtractCommands; } else if (Pattern.compile("windows", Pattern.CASE_INSENSITIVE).matcher(os).find()) { return windowsExtractCommands; } else if (Pattern.compile("mac os x", Pattern.CASE_INSENSITIVE).matcher(os).find()) { return macExtractCommands; } return null; } }

• PostgreSQL, Ubuntu, NetBeans IDE (Part 3)

- by Geertjan
To complete the picture, let's use the traditional (that is, old) Hibernate mechanism, i.e., via XML files, rather than via the annotations shown yesterday. It's definitely trickier, with many more places where typos can occur, but that's why it's the old mechanism. I do not recommend this approach. I recommend the approach shown yesterday. The other players in this scenario include PostgreSQL, as outlined in the previous blog entries in this series. Here's the structure of the module, replacing the code shown yesterday: Here's the Employee class, notice that it has no annotations: import java.io.Serializable; import java.util.Date; public class Employees implements Serializable { private int employeeId; private String firstName; private String lastName; private Date dateOfBirth; private String phoneNumber; private String junk; public int getEmployeeId() { return employeeId; } public void setEmployeeId(int employeeId) { this.employeeId = employeeId; } public String getFirstName() { return firstName; } public void setFirstName(String firstName) { this.firstName = firstName; } public String getLastName() { return lastName; } public void setLastName(String lastName) { this.lastName = lastName; } public Date getDateOfBirth() { return dateOfBirth; } public void setDateOfBirth(Date dateOfBirth) { this.dateOfBirth = dateOfBirth; } public String getPhoneNumber() { return phoneNumber; } public void setPhoneNumber(String phoneNumber) { this.phoneNumber = phoneNumber; } public String getJunk() { return junk; } public void setJunk(String junk) { this.junk = junk; } } And here's the Hibernate configuration file: <hibernate-configuration> <session-factory> <property name="hibernate.connection.driver_class">org.postgresql.Driver</property> <property name="hibernate.connection.url">jdbc:postgresql://localhost:5432/smithdb</property> <property name="hibernate.connection.username">smith</property> <property name="hibernate.connection.password">smith</property> <property name="hibernate.connection.pool_size">1</property> <property name="hibernate.default_schema">public"</property> <property name="hibernate.transaction.factory_class">org.hibernate.transaction.JDBCTransactionFactory</property> <property name="hibernate.current_session_context_class">thread</property> <property name="hibernate.dialect">org.hibernate.dialect.PostgreSQLDialect</property> <property name="hibernate.show_sql">true</property> <mapping resource="org/db/viewer/employees.hbm.xml"/> </session-factory> </hibernate-configuration> Next, the Hibernate mapping file: <hibernate-mapping> <class name="org.db.viewer.Employees" table="employees" schema="public" catalog="smithdb">

<property name="firstName" column="first_name" type="string" />         <property name="lastName" column="last_name" type="string" />         <property name="dateOfBirth" column="date_of_birth" type="date" />         <property name="phoneNumber" column="phone_number" type="string" />         <property name="junk" column="junk" type="string" />             </class>     </hibernate-mapping> Then, the HibernateUtil file, for providing access to the Hibernate SessionFactory: import java.net.URL; import org.hibernate.cfg.AnnotationConfiguration; import org.hibernate.SessionFactory; public class HibernateUtil {     private static final SessionFactory sessionFactory;         static {         try {             // Create the SessionFactory from standard (hibernate.cfg.xml)             // config file.             String res = "org/db/viewer/employees.cfg.xml";             URL myURL = Thread.currentThread().getContextClassLoader().getResource(res);             sessionFactory = new AnnotationConfiguration().configure(myURL).buildSessionFactory();         } catch (Throwable ex) {             // Log the exception.             System.err.println("Initial SessionFactory creation failed." + ex);             throw new ExceptionInInitializerError(ex);         }     }         public static SessionFactory getSessionFactory() {         return sessionFactory;     }     } Finally, the "createKeys" in the ChildFactory: @Override protected boolean createKeys(List list) {     Session session = HibernateUtil.getSessionFactory().getCurrentSession();     Transaction transac = null;     try {         transac = session.beginTransaction();         Query query = session.createQuery("from Employees");         list.addAll(query.list());     } catch (HibernateException he) {         Exceptions.printStackTrace(he);         if (transac != null){             transac.rollback();         }     } finally {         session.close();     }     return true; } Note that Constantine Drabo has a similar article here. Run the application and the result should be the same as yesterday.

• Email not sent until application closes

- by Tester101
I have an application that uses SmtpClient to send E-Mail, but the E-Mails are not sent until the application closes. I have searched and searched to find a solution to the problem, but I am not able to find one. The system does have Symantec anti-virus installed, which could possibly be the problem. Does anybody have a solution to this problem? Here is the code I am using. public class EMail { private string server; public string Server {get{return this.server;}set{this.server = value;}} private string to; public string To {get{return this.to;}set{this.to = value;}} private string from; public string From {get{return this.from;}set{this.from = value;}} private string subject; public string Subject {get{return this.subject;}set{this.subject = value;}} private string body; public string Body {get{return this.body;}set{this.body = value;}} public EMail() {} public EMail(string _server, string _to, string _from, string _subject, string _body) { this.Server = _server; this.To = _to; this.From = _from; this.Subject = _subject; this.Body = _body; } public void Send() { System.Net.Mail.MailMessage message = new System.Net.Mail.MailMessage(this.From, this.To, this.Subject, this.Body); message.IsBodyHtml = true; System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient client = new System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient(this.Server); client.DeliveryMethod = System.Net.Mail.SmtpDeliveryMethod.Network; //I have tried this, but it still does not work. //client.ServicePoint.ConnectionLeaseTimeout = 0; try { client.Send(message); } catch(System.Exception ex) { System.Windows.Forms.MessageBox.Show(ex.ToString()); } message.Dispose(); } }

• One-to-many relationship with JDO in Google App Engine

- by Marvin
I've followed the GAE docs on setting up one-to-many relationship in JDO but I'm still having trouble in retrieving the collection data back. I have no problem getting the other non-collection fields back. Here are my classes: @PersistenceCapable public class User{ @PrimaryKey @Persistent(valueStrategy = IdGeneratorStrategy.IDENTITY) private Key key; @Persistent private String uniqueId; @Persistent private String email; @Persistent private List
addresses = new ArrayList
() ; ... } @PersistenceCapable public class Phone{ @PrimaryKey @Persistent(valueStrategy = IdGeneratorStrategy.IDENTITY) private Key key; @Persistent private String number; ... } public class UserDaoImpl implements UserDao { public void insertUser(User user) { if(user.getKey() == null) { com.google.appengine.api.datastore.Key key = KeyFactory.createKey(User.class.getSimpleName(), user.getEmail()); user.setKey(key); } PersistenceManager pm = PersistenceManagerWrapper.getPersistenceManager(); notNull(user); try { pm.makePersistent(user); } finally { pm.close(); } } @SuppressWarnings("unchecked") public User getUser(String uniqueId) { PersistenceManager pm = PersistenceManagerWrapper.getPersistenceManager(); Query query = pm.newQuery(User.class); query.setFilter("uniqueId == uniqueIdParam"); query.declareParameters("String uniqueIdParam"); User user = null; try { List<User> users = (List<User>)(query.execute(uniqueId)); //TODO abstract this if(users.size() > 0) user = users.get(0); } finally { pm.close(); } return user; } } public class UserDaoImplTest { @Test public void getUserTest() { User user = createTestUser(); assertNotNull("The user object should not be null", user); userDao.insertUser(user); User returnedUser = userDao.getUser(TEST_USER_ID); assertNotNull("The returnedUser object should not be null", returnedUser); Assert.assertPropertyEqualsExcludeProperties("User Object", user, returnedUser, ""); } } When I run the test, all the properties for User is populated but the list of Phone if I get is empty.

• retrieving information from web service calls

- by Monte Chan
Hi all, I am trying to retrieve information from a web service call. The following is what I have so far. In my text view, it is showing Map {item=anyType{key=TestKey; value=2;}; item=anyType{key=TestField; value=adsfasd; };} When I ran that in the debugger, I can see the information above in the variable, tempvar. But the question is, how do I retrieve the information (i.e. the actual values of "key" and "value" in each of the array positions)? Yes, I know there is a lot going on in onCreate and I will fix it later. Thanks in advance, Monte My codes are as follows, import java.util.Vector; import android.app.Activity; import android.os.Bundle; import android.widget.TextView; import org.ksoap2.SoapEnvelope; import org.ksoap2.serialization.SoapObject; import org.ksoap2.serialization.SoapSerializationEnvelope; import org.ksoap2.transport.AndroidHttpTransport; public class ViewHitUpActivity extends Activity { private static final String SOAP_ACTION = "test_function"; private static final String METHOD_NAME = "test_function"; private static final String NAMESPACE = "http://www.monteandjanicechan.com/"; private static final String URL = "http://www.monteandjanicechan.com/ws/test_ws.cfc?wsdl"; // private Object resultRequestSOAP = null; private TextView tv; /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); SoapObject request = new SoapObject(NAMESPACE, METHOD_NAME); tv = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.people_view); //SoapObject request.addProperty("test_item", "1"); SoapSerializationEnvelope envelope = new SoapSerializationEnvelope(SoapEnvelope.VER11); envelope.setOutputSoapObject(request); AndroidHttpTransport androidHttpTransport = new AndroidHttpTransport(URL); try { androidHttpTransport.call(SOAP_ACTION, envelope); /* resultRequestSOAP = envelope.getResponse(); Vector tempResult = (Vector) resultRequestSOAP("test_functionReturn"); */ SoapObject resultsRequestSOAP = (SoapObject) envelope.bodyIn; Vector tempResult = (Vector) resultsRequestSOAP.getProperty("test_functionReturn"); int testsize = tempResult.size(); // SoapObject test = (SoapObject) tempResult.get(0); //String[] results = (String[]) resultRequestSOAP; Object tempvar = tempResult.elementAt(1); tv.setText(tempvar.toString()); } catch (Exception aE) { aE.printStackTrace (); tv.setText(aE.getClass().getName() + ": " + aE.getMessage()); } } }

• problem in displaying list using array adapters

- by Rahul Varma

• proper use of volatile keyword

- by luke
I think i have a pretty good idea about the volatile keyword in java, but i'm thinking about re-factoring some code and i thought it would be a good idea to use it. i have a class that is basically working as a DB Cache. it holds a bunch of objects that it has read from a database, serves requests for those objects, and then occasionally refreshes the database (based on a timeout). Heres the skeleton public class Cache { private HashMap mappings =....; private long last_update_time; private void loadMappingsFromDB() { //.... } private void checkLoad() { if(System.currentTimeMillis() - last_update_time > TIMEOUT) loadMappingsFromDB(); } public Data get(ID id) { checkLoad(); //.. look it up } } So the concern is that loadMappingsFromDB could be a high latency operation and thats not acceptable, So initially i thought that i could spin up a thread on cache startup and then just have it sleep and then update the cache in the background. But then i would need to synchronize my class (or the map). and then i would just be trading an occasional big pause for making every cache access slower. Then i thought why not use volatile i could define the map reference as volatile private volatile HashMap mappings =....; and then in get (or anywhere else that uses the mappings variable) i would just make a local copy of the reference: public Data get(ID id) { HashMap local = mappings; //.. look it up using local } and then the background thread would just load into a temp table and then swap the references in the class HashMap tmp; //load tmp from DB mappings = tmp;//swap variables forcing write barrier Does this approach make sense? and is it actually thread-safe?

• Conversion type

- by Ruben
Hi, I've got the following question. I've got one class "Instellingen" that's a property in 3 other classes public class Instellingen { private int _ID; } public class Class1: Label { private Instellingen _Instellingen; } public class Class2 : Label { private Instellingen _Instellingen; } public class Class3 : Label { private Instellingen _Instellingen; } If I've got another class, that uses the other classes (but it can be anyone of this 3 classes) Do i have to use a switch? or is there an easier way? public class AnotherClass { public AnotherClass () { GetInstellingenFromClass(new Class1()); GetInstellingenFromClass(new Class2()); GetInstellingenFromClass(new Class3()); } private void GetInstellingenFromClass(Control c) { switch (c.GetType.ToString()) { case "Class1": Class1 klasse = (Class1) c; //Do something with the _Instellingen of this class break; case "Class2": Class2 klasse2 = (Class2) c; //Do something with the _Instellingen of this class break; case "Class3": Class3 klasse3 = (Class3)c; //Do something with the _Instellingen of this class break; } } } (does there exists something so i can just do something like c._Instellingen -- without converting it first to the right type, where it doesn't matter what type c is?) I hope you understand my question. Thanks

• How do I use Google's Gson API to deserialize JSON properly?

- by FK82
Hi, In short, this is a sketch of the JSON object I want to parse in JAVA: { object1: { item1: //[String | Array | Object] , item2: // ... //<> more items object2: { // } //<> more objects } These are the POJO s I created for parsing (I'll leave out the import statements for brevity's sake): (1) The representation of the complete JSON object public class JObjectContainer { private List<JObject> jObjects ; public JObjectContainer() { // } //get & set methods } (2) The representation of the nested objects: public class JObject { private String id ; private List<JNode> jObjects ; public JObject() { // } //get & set methods } (3) The representation of the items: public class JNode { private JsonElement item1 ; private JsonElement item2 ; //<> more item fields public JNode() { // } //get & set methods } Now, creating a Gson instance (FileReader for importing the jsonFile), Gson gson = new Gson() ; JObjectContainer joc = gson(jsonFile,JObjectContainer.class) ; I get a NullPointerException whenever I try to access the parseable object (e.g. through a ListIterator). Gson does however create an object of the class I specified and does not throw any subsequent errors. I know that this has been done before. So, what am I missing? TIA

• Prevent lazy loading in nHibernate

- by Ciaran
Hi, I'm storing some blobs in my database, so I have a Document table and a DocumentContent table. Document contains a filename, description etc and has a DocumentContent property. I have a Silverlight client, so I don't want to load up and send the DocumentContent to the client unless I explicity ask for it, but I'm having trouble doing this. I've read the blog post by Davy Brion. I have tried placing lazy=false in my config and removing the virtual access modifier but have had no luck with it as yet. Every time I do a Session.Get(id), the DocumentContent is retrieved via an outer join. I only want this property to be populated when I explicity join onto this table and ask for it. Any help is appreciated. My NHibernate mapping is as follows: <hibernate-mapping xmlns="urn:nhibernate-mapping-2.2" assembly="Jrm.Model" namespace="Jrm.Model"> <class name="JrmDocument" lazy="false">

<property name="FileName"/> <property name="Description"/> <many-to-one name="DocumentContent" class="JrmDocumentContent" unique="true" column="JrmDocumentContentID" lazy="false"/> </class> <class name="JrmDocumentContent" lazy="false">

<property name="Content" type="BinaryBlob" lazy="false"> <column name="FileBytes" sql-type="varbinary(max)"/> </property> </class> </hibernate-mapping> and my classes are: [DataContract] public class JrmDocument : ModelBase { private int jrmDocumentID; private JrmDocumentContent documentContent; private long maxFileSize; private string fileName; private string description; public JrmDocument() { } public JrmDocument(string fileName, long maxFileSize) { DocumentContent = new JrmDocumentContent(File.ReadAllBytes(fileName)); FileName = new FileInfo(fileName).Name; } [DataMember] public virtual int JrmDocumentID { get { return jrmDocumentID; } set { jrmDocumentID = value; OnPropertyChanged("JrmDocumentID"); } } [DataMember] public JrmDocumentContent DocumentContent { get { return documentContent; } set { documentContent = value; OnPropertyChanged("DocumentContent"); } } [DataMember] public virtual long MaxFileSize { get { return maxFileSize; } set { maxFileSize = value; OnPropertyChanged("MaxFileSize"); } } [DataMember] public virtual string FileName { get { return fileName; } set { fileName = value; OnPropertyChanged("FileName"); } } [DataMember] public virtual string Description { get { return description; } set { description = value; OnPropertyChanged("Description"); } } } [DataContract] public class JrmDocumentContent : ModelBase { private int jrmDocumentContentID; private byte[] content; public JrmDocumentContent() { } public JrmDocumentContent(byte[] bytes) { Content = bytes; } [DataMember] public int JrmDocumentContentID { get { return jrmDocumentContentID; } set { jrmDocumentContentID = value; OnPropertyChanged("JrmDocumentContentID"); } } [DataMember] public byte[] Content { get { return content; } set { content = value; OnPropertyChanged("Content"); } } }

• How to implement Xml Serialization with inherited classes in C#

- by liorafar
I have two classes : base class name Component and inheritd class named DBComponent [Serializable] public class Component { private string name = string.Empty; private string description = string.Empty; } [Serializable] public class DBComponent : Component { private List<string> spFiles = new List<string>(); // Storage Procedure Files [XmlArrayItem("SPFile", typeof(string))] [XmlArray("SPFiles")] public List<string> SPFiles { get { return spFiles; } set { spFiles = value; } } public DBComponent(string name, string description) : base(name, description) { } } [Serializable] public class ComponentsCollection { private static ComponentsCollection instance = null; private List<Component> components = new List<Component>(); public List<Component> Components { get { return components; } set { components = value; } } public static ComponentsCollection GetInstance() { if (ccuInstance == null) { lock (lockObject) { if (instance == null) PopulateComponents(); } } return instance; } private static void PopulateComponents() { instance = new CCUniverse(); XmlSerializer xs = new XmlSerializer(instance.GetType()); instance = xs.Deserialize(XmlReader.Create("Components.xml")) as ComponentsCollection; } } } I want read\write from a Xml file. I know that I need to implement the Serialization for DBComponent class otherwise it will not read it.But i cannot find any simple article for that. all the articles that I found were too complex for this simple scenario. The Xml file looks like this: <ComponentsCollection> <Components> <DBComponent Name="Tenant Historical Database" Description="Tenant Historical Database"> <SPFiles> <SPFile>Setup\TenantHistoricalSP.sql</SPFile> </SPFiles> </DBComponent> <Component Name="Agent" Description="Desktop Agent" /> </Components> </ComponentsCollection> Can someone please give me a simple example of how to read this kind of xml file and what should be implemented ? Thanks Lior

• Extracting the Layout of all the Data Forms from the Relational Database

- by RahulS
Today I came across a question from one of our clients that: "what members are used on each data form WITHOUT having to go through the report generated out of our Planning app". We worked with client on this and reached to a simple query. All the form related information is stored in the following tables: HSP_FORM HSP_FORMOBJ_DEF HSP_FORMOBJ_DEF_MBR HSP_FORM_ATTRIBUTES HSP_FORM_CALCS HSP_FORM_DV_CONDITION HSP_FORM_DV_PM_RULE HSP_FORM_DV_RULE HSP_FORM_DV_USER_IN_PM_RULE HSP_FORM_LAYOUT HSP_FORM_MENUS HSP_FORM_VARIABLES If we want to retrieve just the members included, we can concentrate on: HSP_OBJECT to get the Object_ID for form, Object_Type is 7 for forms. (Ex: Select * from HSP_OBJECT where OBJECT_TYPE = 7) HSP_FORMOBJ_DEF Find the OBJDEF_ID for a particular form HSP_FORMOBJ_DEF_MBR Use the above OBJDEF_ID to find the members: Here the Mbr_ID is the Id of the member and Query_Type is the Function like Idesc, Level0 etc and Sequce is you sequence, And the final table we can use is HSP_FORM_LAYOUT: Layout_Type: 0->Pov 1-> Page, 2->Row, 3->Col, DIM_ID is the dimension ID and Ordinal is position. Here is the Query: SELECT HSP_OBJECT.OBJECT_NAME AS 'Form', HSP_OBJECT_2.OBJECT_NAME AS 'Dimension', HSP_OBJECT_1.OBJECT_NAME AS 'Member', HSP_FORMOBJ_DEF_MBR.QUERY_TYPE FROM <DatabaseName>.dbo.HSP_FORM_LAYOUT HSP_FORM_LAYOUT, <DatabaseName>.dbo.HSP_FORMOBJ_DEF HSP_FORMOBJ_DEF, <DatabaseName>.dbo.HSP_FORMOBJ_DEF_MBR HSP_FORMOBJ_DEF_MBR, <DatabaseName>.dbo.HSP_MEMBER HSP_MEMBER, <DatabaseName>.dbo.HSP_OBJECT HSP_OBJECT, <DatabaseName>.dbo.HSP_OBJECT HSP_OBJECT_1, <DatabaseName>.dbo.HSP_OBJECT HSP_OBJECT_2 WHERE HSP_OBJECT.OBJECT_ID = HSP_FORMOBJ_DEF.FORM_ID AND HSP_FORMOBJ_DEF_MBR.OBJDEF_ID = HSP_FORMOBJ_DEF.OBJDEF_ID AND HSP_MEMBER.MEMBER_ID = HSP_FORMOBJ_DEF_MBR.MBR_ID AND HSP_OBJECT_1.OBJECT_ID = HSP_MEMBER.MEMBER_ID AND HSP_OBJECT_2.OBJECT_ID = HSP_MEMBER.DIM_ID AND HSP_FORM_LAYOUT.DIM_ID = HSP_MEMBER.DIM_ID AND HSP_FORM_LAYOUT.FORM_ID = HSP_FORMOBJ_DEF.FORM_ID AND ((HSP_OBJECT.OBJECT_TYPE=7)) ORDER BY HSP_OBJECT.OBJECT_NAME Concentrate on Test1 data form and Actual Layout of it as follows: Corresponding Query_type for few of the functions: 9 for Idesc, 3 for Ancestors, -9 for ILvl0Des, 8 for Desc, 4 for IAncestors Its just a basic idea you can do lot on the basis of this. Hi, I have a collection of strings and declared the strings individually as arrays using ArrayList<String> al=new ArrayList<String>(); and called the arrays in the program by using al=getIntent().getStringArrayListExtra("titles"); Now, instead of declaring each of the arrays i have created SongsArray.java like below... public class SongsArray { private String title; private String movieName; private String singerName; private String imagePath; private String mediaPath; public String gettitle() { return title; } public void settitle(String title) { this.title = title; } public String getmovieName() { return movieName; } public void setmovieName(String movieName) { this.movieName = movieName; } public String getsingerName() { return singerName; } public void setsingerName(String singerName) { this.singerName = singerName; } public String getimagePath() { return imagePath; } public void setimagePath(String imagePath) { this.imagePath = imagePath; } public String getmediaPath() { return mediaPath; } public void setmediaPath(String mediaPath) { this.mediaPath = mediaPath; } } Now i want to call the arrays that i have declared. How can i do that???

• How does this Singleton Web Class persists session data, even though session is not updated in the p

- by Micah Burnett
Ok, I've got this singleton-like web class which uses session to maintain state. I initially thought I was going to have to manipulate the session variables on each "set" so that the new values were updated in the session. However I tried using it as-is, and somehow, it remembers state. For example, if run this code on one page: UserContext.Current.User.FirstName = "Micah"; And run this code in a different browser tab, FirstName is displayed correctly: Response.Write(UserContext.Current.User.FirstName); Can someone tell me (prove) how this data is getting persisted in the session? Here is the class: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Web; public class UserContext { private UserContext() { } public static UserContext Current { get { if (System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Session["UserContext"] == null) { UserContext uc = new UserContext(); uc.User = new User(); System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Session["UserContext"] = uc; } return (UserContext)System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Session["UserContext"]; } } private string HospitalField; public string Hospital { get { return HospitalField; } set { HospitalField = value; ContractField = null; ModelType = null; } } private string ContractField; public string Contract { get { return ContractField; } set { ContractField = value; ModelType = string.Empty; } } private string ModelTypeField; public string ModelType { get { return ModelTypeField; } set { ModelTypeField = value; } } private User UserField; public User User { get { return UserField; } set { UserField = value; } } public void DoSomething() { } } public class User { public int UserId { get; set; } public string FirstName { get; set; } }

• MVC SiteMap - when different nodes point to same action SiteMap.CurrentNode does not map to the correct route

- by awrigley
Setup: I am using ASP.NET MVC 4, with mvcSiteMapProvider to manage my menus. I have a custom menu builder that evaluates whether a node is on the current branch (ie, if the SiteMap.CurrentNode is either the CurrentNode or the CurrentNode is nested under it). The code is included below, but essentially checks the url of each node and compares it with the url of the currentnode, up through the currentnodes "family tree". The CurrentBranch is used by my custom menu builder to add a class that highlights menu items on the CurrentBranch. The Problem: My custom menu works fine, but I have found that the mvcSiteMapProvider does not seem to evaluate the url of the CurrentNode in a consistent manner: When two nodes point to the same action and are distinguished only by a parameter of the action, SiteMap.CurrentNode does not seem to use the correct route (it ignores the distinguishing parameter and defaults to the first route that that maps to the action defined in the node). Example of the Problem: In an app I have Members. A Member has a MemberStatus field that can be "Unprocessed", "Active" or "Inactive". To change the MemberStatus, I have a ProcessMemberController in an Area called Admin. The processing is done using the Process action on the ProcessMemberController. My mvcSiteMap has two nodes that BOTH map to the Process action. The only difference between them is the alternate parameter (such are my client's domain semantics), that in one case has a value of "Processed" and in the other "Unprocessed": Nodes: <mvcSiteMapNode title="Process" area="Admin" controller="ProcessMembers" action="Process" alternate="Unprocessed" /> <mvcSiteMapNode title="Change Status" area="Admin" controller="ProcessMembers" action="Process" alternate="Processed" /> Routes: The corresponding routes to these two nodes are (again, the only thing that distinguishes them is the value of the alternate parameter): context.MapRoute( "Process_New_Members", "Admin/Unprocessed/Process/{MemberId}", new { controller = "ProcessMembers", action = "Process", alternate="Unprocessed", MemberId = UrlParameter.Optional } ); context.MapRoute( "Change_Status_Old_Members", "Admin/Members/Status/Change/{MemberId}", new { controller = "ProcessMembers", action = "Process", alternate="Processed", MemberId = UrlParameter.Optional } ); What works: The Html.ActionLink helper uses the routes and produces the urls I expect: @Html.ActionLink("Process", MVC.Admin.ProcessMembers.Process(item.MemberId, "Unprocessed") // Output (alternate="Unprocessed" and item.MemberId = 12): Admin/Unprocessed/Process/12 @Html.ActionLink("Status", MVC.Admin.ProcessMembers.Process(item.MemberId, "Processed") // Output (alternate="Processed" and item.MemberId = 23): Admin/Members/Status/Change/23 In both cases the output is correct and as I expect. What doesn't work: Let's say my request involves the second option, ie, /Admin/Members/Status/Change/47, corresponding to alternate = "Processed" and a MemberId of 47. Debugging my static CurrentBranch property (see below), I find that SiteMap.CurrentNode shows: PreviousSibling: null Provider: {MvcSiteMapProvider.DefaultSiteMapProvider} ReadOnly: false ResourceKey: "" Roles: Count = 0 RootNode: {Home} Title: "Process" Url: "/Admin/Unprocessed/Process/47" Ie, for a request url of /Admin/Members/Status/Change/47, SiteMap.CurrentNode.Url evaluates to /Admin/Unprocessed/Process/47. Ie, it is ignorning the alternate parameter and using the wrong route. CurrentBranch Static Property: ///
/// ReadOnly. Gets the Branch of the Site Map that holds the SiteMap.CurrentNode ///
public static List<SiteMapNode> CurrentBranch { get { List<SiteMapNode> currentBranch = null; if (currentBranch == null) { SiteMapNode cn = SiteMap.CurrentNode; SiteMapNode n = cn; List<SiteMapNode> ln = new List<SiteMapNode>(); if (cn != null) { while (n != null && n.Url != SiteMap.RootNode.Url) { // I don't need to check for n.ParentNode == null // because cn != null && n != SiteMap.RootNode ln.Add(n); n = n.ParentNode; } // the while loop excludes the root node, so add it here // I could add n, that should now be equal to SiteMap.RootNode, but this is clearer ln.Add(SiteMap.RootNode); // The nodes were added in reverse order, from the CurrentNode up, so reverse them. ln.Reverse(); } currentBranch = ln; } return currentBranch; } } The Question: What am I doing wrong? The routes are interpreted by Html.ActionLlink as I expect, but are not evaluated by SiteMap.CurrentNode as I expect. In other words, in evaluating my routes, SiteMap.CurrentNode ignores the distinguishing alternate parameter.
