• Error - "IR Hardware not detected" - but it's installed/working

  I am trying to do: Settings-TV-Set up TV signal. During this process I am getting the error "IR Hardware not detected." With the remote, I can select the "try again" button (to re-detect) and it tries again, so the remote works. Plugging in the "IR blaster" doesn't change anything. (I wouldn't expect any difference, but I read a post which said you needed that. I will get Media Center to change channels if I can get that working - but first things first.) I was able to do the setup months ago when I had cable. and everything was fine. I just got DirecTV. (BTW - During the above process, Media Center detects the signal coming in on channel 3. Windows XP Media Center SP3. The TV Tuner card is a Pinnacle TCTV HD PCI. Everything - and I mean everything - has the latest firmware and drivers - as of 4 months ago when I fixed a different problem. So I DON"T WANT TO HEAR the standard answer to check drivers/firmware. • Need for explanation: NetBIOS over TCP/IP on VMware network adapter disturbs access to network share

  (Moved here from StackOverflow) Some time ago nearly all workstations in our team (Windows XP SP2) exhibited intermittend but frequent delays when accessing shares on the network. Typically the first access to a share which hadn't been accessed for some time resulted in a nearly frozen workstation for up to 30 seconds. Then everything started working fine again. Using TCPView from Sysinternals I saw that during this delays there was a connection to the netbios-ssn port on the file server which was in state SYN_SENT. First try: Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP for the intranet network adapter. Problem solved, but I didn't like to manipulate our centrally managed network configuration for the intranet. Second try: Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP only for the VMWare network adapter (VMNet1 used for host only communications). Problem solved again! My questions: Why does NetBIOS over TCP/IP on one network adapter disturb NetBIOS over TCP/IP on another network adapter? Is this problem specific to VMWare network adapters? Has anybody else seen this phenomen? Additional information: VMWare Workstation version 6.0.3 At the time I started seriously analysing the problem it was no more possible to find out what had been changed to our systems at the time the problems started.

• Media Center setup won't complete for watching TV

  I have a problem watching TV in Media Center. The TV constantly pauses 1/2 second then plays 1 second, pauses 1/2 second, plays 1 second - it is constant and does not vary. This problem occurs on all channels, live or recorded. The bottom 5th of the screen is solid green. I know the problem is Media Center because I can use Pinnacle's TVCenterPro to watch TV and there is no skipping/pausing (and not green on bottom). I was using cable, and switched to DirecTV (satellite). Trying to do "Set up TV signal" in Media Center seems to be what broke it. I get an error "IR Hardware not detected." I can use the remote to "try again" - so the IR hardware works fine (Media Center's remote/sensor). I tried plugging the IR Blaster into both ports, and I tried a different USB port for the IR receiver. I can't complete the setup. Media Center was playing TV okay (with the new DirecTV) before I tried to run setup. (I ran setup to try to do recording with Media Center.) Hardware/Software: Pinnacle PCTV 800i HD PCI card (coax cable from DirecTV tuner), ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics, Windows XP SP3 Media Center Edition, AMD Athlon Dual Core 2.5 GHz, 1.75 GB RAM.

• Asus MyCinema U3100mini Choppy

  I'm running an Asus MyCinema U3100mini ATSC on Windows 7 64-bit. When I play live TV in Windows Media Center, it's very choppy and uses 500+ MB of RAM, I'm guessing due to the hard drive buffering functionality. Is there any way to disable the live TV pause buffer completely? If not, can anyone recommend alternative software that: Works with the MyCinema. Is lightweight and not horribly bloated with features I'll never use like Windows Media Center is. Edits: This is a dual boot system. I've discovered that the tuner actually works fine on XP. It also works fine on my other computer, which has slower hardware and also runs Windows 7 64-bit. The problem actually seems to be with playback at large screen sizes, not with hard drive buffering. Everything works fine below a certain window size and fails for large windows or full screens. Also, the same thing seems to happen whether playing live or recorded TV. As far as the obvious stuff goes, I have the latest video drivers from ATI for my Radeon x1050.

• What would cause my Windows machine to seize?

  I run Windows XP SP2 on a Desktop I built (I know that doesn't provide much, but I can't say "on a Dell X103938R" or something). It has 'seized' about 7 times in its year and a half life. Everything freezes. I can't move the mouse cursor and the keyboard seems unresponsive. I can turn the monitor on and off and it will hold the last image. The light for the mouse is responsive if I move it. The keyboard lights change when pressed (cap locks, etc). I've waited upto ten minutes for a change, nothing. I haven't connected any activity to the seizing. It's happened when all I was "running" were fullscreen programs (games), just checking email, or once when I was sitting at my desktop (I was reading a book and when I tried to use the mouse, nothing). I've never been able to figure it out. I have to hard reset, and then its fine. It doesn't file system check or anything (not sure if Windows does that). No error when I load up the computer, nothing. If I had uTorrent open, it will have to recheck the torrent files to make sure they weren't corrupted though. (It's not always open when it seizes either). I'm using an AMD Athlon 5400+ with a NVidia GeForce 8600 GT, if that helps. I'm using two hard drives, 500Gb Wester Digital with a 1Tb Hitachi.

• Minimum specs needed to run 1080p HD movies?

  Hi all, I was wondering how low you could go with hardware that would still be able to smoothly run HD movies. My current plan is around $215 CAD w/o a hard drive: Intel Pentium 4 @ 3.2 GHz - 1GB DDR/SDRAM - 512MB X1600 Pro AGP - 350W PSU - ECS P4VXASD2+ - Bluray/DVD-RW drive. As for the hard drive, could I just get a 7200RPM IDE HDD? Also, I'm planning on installing XP Pro SP3, unless Ubuntu somehow has an advantage. I'm not wanting this to be a media center only computer... just want it to be a normal computer with just enough oomph to play HD movies. Thanks in advance. EDIT1: Forgot to mention that the Bluray/DVD-RW drive is SATA, but I was planning on getting an SATA-IDE adapter or a PCI card with SATA. EDIT2: Oh yes... if I get a PCI card with SATA, would you then recommend I use an SATA hard drive as well? That would leave all the IDE ports on the motherboard unused... is that a good idea?

• Cross OS data recover question, USB drive involved.

  Here's the story: A MacBook had OS X 10.4 and Windows XP dual booting using rEFIt. Then the Windows partition gets corrupted and it won't boot. Presumably a virus. There were sensitive files there and those were successfully copied to a USB drive and then 10.5 was installed on the hard drive, formatting the drive in the process. The USB drive's contacts cracked and he data is lost from there, unless it can be resoldered. The issues is that there is too much solder there already. So, how can the data in question be recovered? The files were Microsoft Money (not the latest version) files for the Windows version of the program. Right now, only OS X is installed on the MacBook. Is there Mac based program that can recover the Windows data or am I better off trying to resolder the drive? Does anyone know how to best resolder a USB drive more than once, where the first solder is ther, but detached from the silicon? Also, what format (extension) are Microsoft Money files? In need of help!

• Desktop bigger than screen

  I am using MSI U115 11" netbook (OS: Windows XP Home, graphics card: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 500) and today after I switched it on, desktop was bigger than screen. To be exact: screen resolution was set to the lowest possible and I could move mouse outside of screen (but only below - left, right and up worked normally, mouse could not exceed screen boundaries). I changed resolution back to normal, but the problem with desktop being bigger than screen remained (as before, only lower part - cannot see task bar, etc. When I hit windows button on keyboard, only upper part of menu start is visible). What I already tried was changing all kind of graphics and screen settings - none of them helped. I also tried to restore the system to few days before, but it didn't help neither. What can I do to make the desktop look "normally"? EDIT: Some additional info regarding screen: Sorry it's in polish - but let me explain. There are two screens I can choose (Monitor domyslny means default screen), but the second one (the default one) is not available. After I choose it and click apply number 1. is used (and as you can see it has only two resolutions available. There are more in the second one - but without 1024x600 though). The two ticked and grayed out options here are Use this screen as the main one and Enlarge Windows desktop to match this monitor's size. Too bad I cannot change them. When I choose the second screen, the first box is unchecked and grayed out. The second box is available to be changed but it doesn't matter anyway as after applying changes it reverts to the first screen anyway. EDIT: Intel Graphics Media Control Panel screenshot.

• Dell Dimension 8400 Startup error

  Hello all, thanks first for taking the time to read this and possibly help me...... now I am pretty decent of a computer tech...but not enough. I am having an issue with my computer which is running windows xp and as I mentioned it is a dell Dimension 8400. as soon as I power the system up the fan goes into hyper drive (spins like crazy and is very loud) then the start up screen with dell comes up and the loading bar gets stuck on the process of "Bios Revision A00" and never loads beyound that. I have read alot about it and think that the main problem was that it can not locate the file (which does have an updated version) I think it is A09. I can not enter safe mode, Bios mode or anything. I do have the file on my other computer and I was wondering if there is a way that I can use a usb flash drive (as I have read on other sites) to create a bootable MS-Dos diskette but I am failing at creating as such....is this possible? or is there anything else I can do? I tried to remove the battery from the system for about 10 minutes while it was completely unplug and tried then to reboot it and go into the bios menu but the same thing keeps happening....can anyone help me :-(

• Drivers and firmware for the LiteOn ihap-122-9 DVD drive

  I'm trying to replace the DVD drive in my old PC. LiteOn.com is a mess and I can't find a single working driver or firmware update there, or anywhere. Windows XP tries to use a default, generic driver dated 2001. (About 9 years before this drive even existed.) http://www.firmwarehq.com/download_1..._6L0H.EXE.html This correctly finds my LiteOn ihap-122-9 DVD Drive. It correctly finds that I'm currently using firmware 6L0F. It correctly tries to install 6L0H. It completes 100% but then just fails and says "contact your vendor". Does anyone know why? Where can I actually get drivers... and firmware updates... that actually work for the ihap-122-9? Apparently, the newest driver IS the 1 made 9 years before the drive existed. (Unbelievable.) And the latest firmware is the 1 that is already in the drive. (Common.) No other drive I've had in this computer ever had a problem. This brand new LiteOn is doing this: Opening MY COMPUTER now takes 60 seconds. MY COMPUTER marking the drive as "DVD F:" takes another 30 seconds. MY COMPUTER showing "Batman II" title takes another 15 seconds. Clicking and running the movie will take another 30 seconds for the main-menu to appear. The movie starts about 20 seconds later. The movie runs fine for 1-2 seconds... then stops for 5 seconds.... then starts again and plays for 1-2 seconds. Repeats for 2 hours. (It happens with all store-bought DVDs and all home-made DVDs.)

• No power save on external hard drive - How to implement?

  I recently bought a new 3.5" USB external hard drive which I thought had a power save feature on it, but it turns out that it doesn't. So whether it's being used or not, it spins, which wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't so loud and didn't get really really hot. After doing some research, it seems like what controls this is the enclosure of the hard drive and not the drive itself or the OS (although I suspect that's not entirely true). I attempted to use the "hdparm" utility but it couldn't identify my externals. Just to be clear, I'm defining power save as a hard drive spinning down after a certain time period of not being used (read from/written to). Also, I have other externals that do this, so it's not a problem from my computer. Here's my question: Is there a way to implement a power save-like feature on my hard drive through software, OS settings, or anything else? • Domain workstation acting up and I can't track it down.

If the machine is left on overnight (or any period of time longer than 5-6 hours) it takes 2-3 minutes to open any local drive and his network drives are no longer accessible. • How do I set up a Windows NFS share so that I can view it's contents on Linux?

  My NFS server is a Windows XP SP3 box with the Microsoft Windows Services for Unix installed. I have a share configured under C:\NFS with the share name NFS and ANSI encoding. Anonymous access is enabled, with the anon UID/GID set to 0/0. Additionally, I've set ALL MACHINES to Read-Write, and checked the checkbox to Allow root access. My first NFS client is a Ubuntu 10.04 box, with nfs-common installed. Running sudo mount -t nfs 1.1.1.1:/NFS /home/user/NFS succeeds, but when I attempt to view the folder (even as root), it tells me that I do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of the folder. My second NFS client is an IBM iSeries box running OS/400 V5R3. I used the mount command below: MOUNT TYPE(*NFS) MFS('1.1.1.1:/NFS') MNTOVRDIR('/PARENT/NFS') OPTIONS('rw,nosuid,retry=5,rsize=8096,wsize=8096,timeo=20,retrans=2,acregmin=30,acregmax=60,acdirmin=30,acdirmax=60,soft') CODEPAGE(*BINARY *ASCII) which also mounts successfully. Attempting to WRKLNK '/PARENT/NFS' and use Option 5 to enter the directory yields a Not authorized to object error - even though I am a security officer with the *ALLOBJ special authority. My gut says that it's a problem with the Windows share, but I don't know what it could be. Do you have any suggestions?

• Problem with network after malware attack

  Im trying to help some friends with a Win XP machine. I got rid of the malware using Malware Bytes, and HiJackThis. But now they(I) have another problem. When the computer boot into Windows it seems fine. When I start Internet Explorer the browser window opens just fine, but nothing happens for at minute or two. After the two minutes of waiting, the network icon appears in the taskbar next to the clock, and then everything works. The computer is connected to the internet using a Ethernet adapter. I have looked at the Rvent Log and found an error from Perfnet with eventid 2004 <Provider Name="PerfNet" /> <EventID Qualifiers="49152">2004</EventID> <Level>2</Level> <Task>0</Task> <Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords> What I have tried so far: In the device manager i have uninstalled the Ethernet adapter and installed it again. I have uninstalled and installed the Windows File and Printer Sharing service. I have verified that both server and workstation services are started. What should I do next?

• I can play "test" sounds, but no other audio works

  I'm running Windows XP, and last night my PC was infected by a frustrating virus (one of those viruses that won't let you open virus checkers, etc). I finally killed it 2 hours later, but it involved some heavy duty anti-dote. One side effect is my audio is now gone. Except it's not entirely gone, because when I open the Realtek HD Audio Manager in the task bar, I can play all the "test" sounds. The speakers, the sound card, etc, are therefore working fine. But things like YouTube or Windows Media Player, there's no sound. I'm guessing there's a setting that needs to be reconfigured somewhere.. but where? Maybe relevant: One thing I did do last night was "play" with the system registry. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. SOLVED! The two hour battle with my computer virus resulted in my computer permanently thinking it was in Safe Mode, regardless of how it booted up. I was able to "fix" this by following the post by hsandler in this thread: http://www.petri.co.il/forums/showthread.php?t=23032&page=2 I then rebooted.. and let me tell you, the Windows Startup music has never sounded so sweet. Thanks to all, especially James, whose advice gave me a major clue as to what the problem was.

• How do I stop panning on a monitor that supports a specific resolution?

  Hi all, I've been battling this for a few days now. Any and all help is appreciated. I have a planar monitor with a native res of 1280x1024. At one point, I had used PowerStrip to override "something" and set the res to 1600x1200, and it worked great. I then installed new intel graphics drivers for my 86895g (or w/e model) video card, which screwed up whatever settings I had. If I set it to 1600x1200 this time, it would set the res correctly, but give me a 1280x1024 viewport and the screen would pan when the mouse got to the edges of the screen. Absolutely not useful. Ok, so I was limited to 1280x1024 now. W/e. Now...enter new video card with two video ports. I have two monitors now and the latest nVidia drivers. I decide to try to get dual 1600x1200 going...ended up screwing the original monitor up so much now that it's at 1280x1024, with a 1024x768 viewport and panning! Absolutely not usable now. So what I need, and I can't seem to find on any forums, is help doing one or more of the following: Clearing out all monitor/edid info out of the windows registry without corrupting the registry. Actually correctly override the EDID values and get my sweet res back. Some other way of getting back to at least dual 1280x1024 with NO panning. Note: My device manager shows 4 monitors for some reason. My registry shows entries for all sorts of monitors that have been hooked up to the machine over the years. It's making it difficult to debug. Experience with PowerStrip would be helpful. I've been mucking with Phoenix EDID designer and MonInfo as well, but I'm stumbling around in the dark with these. • Strange Internet Connection issues

  I'm attempting to troubleshoot problems with a laptop computer(HP 8510w) while it's connected to a server of mine via Remote Desktop. I double checked all the settings on the win2k3 server for remote desktop to verify that remote desktop isn't what's causing the disconnect issues, and other people using different computers/laptops can all connect to remote desktop correctly with no issues. These problems happen specifically when the laptop is connected via wifi(several different wifi sources, so it's not an ISP issue) as well as connected via a Verizon data card. However there's no network downtime when the laptop is resting in the docking station and plugged into the network with the remote desktop server. These problems have also only recently occurred since a recent hard drive failure in which a new hard drive was purchased and the laptop had a fresh install of windows xp professional. There's no special software used on this machine, just office 2003. So my question is, what could cause two types of internet access to fail while other types do not? If it is infact related to the win2k3 server, why is this particular laptop getting disconnected when others are not and are all on at the same time?

• RAM ok in memtest86+ == RAM ok after wake from sleep?

  I have a Windows XP (32-bit) system that appears stable in normal operation, but was repeatably freezing (hard lock, no BSOD) a minute or so after waking from S3 sleep. Some Googling against the motherboard model and memory manufacturer suggested that I might need to bump up the memory voltage, so I tried it and it now seems to resume without freezing. However, I don't really trust it and I'd like to validate that it's actually stable, especially after resuming from sleep. I've run Prime95 for a few hours with no issues, and am planning an overnight run of Memtest86+, which I expect to pass because the system has been solid whenever I've run it without putting it to sleep. Does something like Memtest86+ exist that actually invokes S3 sleep during operation? Clearly it would need an operator to wake the computer to resume testing, but I don't think I've ever heard of a memory test tool that can do this. Alternately, am I wasting my time? Should a clean bill of health from Memtest86+ indicate stability regardless of whether sleep is involved, or, conversely, does my original problem indicate that Memtest86+ would have failed eventually with the stock voltage if I'd run it, sleep or not?

• Configuring ZenOSS to monitor CPU load

  I'm trying test out monitoring tools for a network at work with a coworker but neither of us have ever used an sort of monitoring tools before. Currently we are experimenting with ZenOSS and having some difficulties. We want to populate our CPU load graphs because that is one of the primary feature we are looking for in our monitoring tools but we have been unable to populate the graphs with data. So far we have installed the wmipreformance, sqldatasource, wmidatasource, snmpperformance(simple) zenpacks and the machine we are trying to monitor is running Windows XP. We have tried to model the device and everything seems to run and we've tride to add data points to graphs but the only options we recieve for graphs are CPU and Memory. We are able to monitor services, ZenOSS recognizes the make and model of the processor, RAM, and Harddrive and is even giving us metrics on available storage but again, we are looking for performance metrics such as CPU load and Memory utilization. I realize I probably didn't provide a lot of information but that is because we don't have a very good idea of what we are doing and can't find instruction either on the ZenOSS homepage or forums to monitor CPU load. If someone could give us step by step instruction on how to set up CPU load monitoring that would probably be more beneficial to us than a diagnostic of our current setup, but regardless, if I left any important information out and you need it to answer the question, please let me know. • I cannot access Windows Update at all

  I have been unable to access the Windows update site for a couple of weeks now. I just get a message saying "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" and saying I have connection problems. Same thing is replicated with any other Microsoft site I try to access. The Automatic Updates also do not work. I can access every other wesbite I've surfed to. I've tried Googling the problem and based on what other site have suggested I have cleared my cache and temp files. I've scanning my hard drive with my antivirus in case I have a virus (nada). I've tried turning off my firewall and anti-virus (I run Zone Alarm). I've downloaded SpyBot and scanned my drive with that in case something was missed by Zone Alarm (again nada). Based on suggestions from the smart cookies on the Bad Science forum, I've used nslookup to check my translation isn't wonky (got all the info they said I should get). I've also tried navigating there directly using the IP address I was given (nope). I normally access the internet through a 3 mobile broadband connection, but have also tried connecting using a mate's wi-fi connection in case it was something on my mobile modem interferring. I run Windows XP SP3 with Internet Explorer 7 and Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite as my anti-virus/ firewall. Any suggestions?

• scalable yet doable small-medium office network

  Hello, I'm studying up with both Microsoft and Cisco literature and I must say, my head is starting to get clustered up (pun intended). I've made a quick network diagram of a theoretical company... Company1 owns Company 2 and Company 3, which are all under separate rooms and networks, but must be able to share a few resources such as files or printers. Given the amount of info out there and best practices, I thought about posting here to get suggestions and see what would the pro's do. I can read and read all day and implement on my own, but if I dont get some outside input, how will I know if I'm doing something wrong, right? anyway, please take a look and see if this is an over-complicated network or a lackluster design for a small-medium company of about 35 people and lets say they will be double that number by end of the year... :) Using win2k3, esxi, windows xp. • Internet Explorer will not open

  I recently migrated a company to a Microsoft domain environment, logged the users in under their new domain accounts, and then copied the old profiles to the new profile. I am not sure if that is related since they did not complain about it right away and it may have been a subsequent patch or something, but I have two XP computers that will not open IE8. You click on it, and it nothing graphically happens at all, but you can see a process in task manager. If you click many times, you get multiple instances. It will appear often TWICE per click. It still works in the old profile, so it is specific to the profile, and I would like to fix it rather than blow it away. Here is what I have done without success: Tried opening without add-ons (the one in System Tools) Reinstalled IE8 Ran SFC /SCANNOW I found a script that was supposed to repair any registry entries, and ran it. I tried exporting the whole HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer key and deleting it, hoping that when I restarted it, it would recreate it...No joy. I restored it. Any ideas?

• Why does Internet Explorer sometimes fail to connect to anything until I restart it?

  IE has an annoying problem on my PC (XP SP3). I start it and try to go to Google (for example) and it'll sit there saying "Connecting" but nothing will happen and it doesn't matter how many times I try, it won't connect to anything. I discovered that if I kill IE and restart it then it might start working (and then it'll work every time). It might takes 3-4 restarts (of IE, not the PC) to get a working IE. Now I wouldn't normally care about this since I use Chrome but a lot of things use IE by default like Windows Update and the online help in Office 2003 so I would like to fix it. Interestingly, my work laptop, which is running Windows 7 RC 64-bit, has exactly the same problem (completely different network and everything). I'm utterly convinced it's not a network or hardware problem but some software problem. Edit: More info. It's IE8; No add-ons; Automatically detect settings is not enabled. It is set to "Never dial a connection".

• User authentication -- username mismatch in IIS in ASP.NET application

  Last week, an employee's Active Directory username was changed (or a new one was created for them). For the purposes of this example, let's assume these usernames: Old: Domain\11111 New: Domain\22222 When this user now logs in using their new username, and attempts to browse to any one of a number of ASP.NET applications using only Windows Authentication (no Anonymous enabled), the system authenticates but our next layer of database-driven permissions prevents them from being authorized. We tracked it down to a mismatch of usernames between their logon account and who IIS thinks they are. Below are the outputs of several ASP.NET variables from apps running in a Windows 2008 IIS7.5 environment: Request.ServerVariables["AUTH_TYPE"]: Negotiate Request.ServerVariables["AUTH_USER"]: Domain\11111 Request.ServerVariables["LOGON_USER"]: Domain\22222 Request.ServerVariables["REMOTE_USER"]: Domain\11111 HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name: Domain\11111 System.Threading.Thread.CurrentPrincipal.Identity.Name: Domain\11111 From the above, I can see that only the LOGON_USER server variable has the correct value, which is the account the user used to log on to their machine. However, we use the "AUTH_USER" variable for looking up the database permissions. In a separate testing environment (completely different server: Windows 2003, IIS6), all of the above variables show "Domain\22222". So this seems to be a server-specific issue, like the credentials are somehow getting cached either on their machine or on the server (the former seems more plausible). So the question is: how do I confirm whether it's the user's machine or the server that is botching the request? How should I go about fixing this? • Windows Update and lsass.exe

  I have a brand new installation of Windows XP (SP1 or older). I installed Norton AntiVirus, Firefox, Putty, and Cygwin. No other software is present. Windows Update finds the following 64 updates: KB905760, KB978262, Internet Explorer 8, KB71961, KB954155, KB968816, KB923561, KB950762, KB949402, KB950974, KB951376, KB951748, KB952004, KB952954, KB955069, KB956572, KB956802, KB956803, KB956844, KB958470, KB958869, KB959426, KB960803, KB960859, KB961501, KB969059, KB970238, KB970238, KB971032, KB971468, KB971657, KB972270, KB973507, KB973815, KB973904, KB974112, KB974318, KB974392, KB975025, KB975560, KB975561, KB975713, .......) When these updates are applied, the system reboots to a black screen with two error messages. The first error message says: lsass.exe - Application Error The application failed to initialize properly (0xc00000142). Click on OK to terminate the application. The second error message says: services.exe - Application Error The application failed to initialize properly (0xc00000142). Click on OK to terminate the application. I then proceed to boot into Safe Mode, use System Restore, and everything works fine again until the 64 updates re-appear in Windows Update. I can see two options: disable Auto-Updates or install each of the 64 updates one at a time until finding the troublesome update. Does anyone have any better ideas?
