  • Libraries for game developement in c++? [on hold]

    - by LPeter1997
It's time for me to start developing games in c++ (I have experience in game developement with xna and java). What libraries do you recommend? I tried Allegro, but the installation is pretty headcrushing already. Could you share me your experiences with the library(ies) you use? (maybe even advantages and disadvantages) By the way it's a good point if it can be easily connected to CodeBlocks or Dev-C++. Thanks for the answers!

  • Possible applications of algorithm devised for differentiating between structured vs random text

    - by rooznom
I have written a program that can rapidly (within 5 sec on a 2GB RAM desktop, 2.33 Ghz CPU) differentiate between structured text (e.g english text) and random alphanumeric strings. It can also provide a probability score for the prediction. Are there any practical applications/uses of such a program. Note that the program is based on entropy models and does not have any dictionary comparisons in its workflow. Thanks in advance for your responses

  • Communication Between Different Technologies in a Distributed Application

    - by sjtaheri
I had to a incorporate several legacy applications and services in a network-distributed application. The existing services and applications are written using different languages and technologies, including: java, C#.Net and C++; all running on MS Windows machines. Now I'm wondering about the communication mechanism between them. What is the simple and standard way? Thanks! PS. communications include simple message sending and remote method invocations.

  • window.scrollBy only works in Firefox !? [closed]

    - by Patrick
In my website I have this javascript code, adding a vertical offset when in the url a specific section of the page is specified (#): if (!!window.location.hash) window.scrollBy(0,-60); However this only works in Firefox... I'm pretty sure window.location.hash works in all browsers, that is, the symbol "sharp" is correctly detected in the url. However, the -60 offset only works in Firefox... this is the url, could you give me some insight ? http://patrickdiviacco.co.cc/#432 thanks

I installed VMware Player-4.0.6-1035888.x86_64 on my x64 Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, but when I run it I get this error message: C header files matching your running kernel were not found. Refer to your distribution's documentation for installation instructions. Now, I've run this beforehand: sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r) and the folder named linux-headers-3.13.0-24-generic exists already in /usr/src Any solutions? • How to design the scenarios in a platform game?

    - by ReyLitch
I am developing a 3D platform game like Metroid Fusion with XNA. I have many classes for different elements as models, game screens, postprocessing and so on. Now I want to start designing the scenarios but I think that the scenarios needed in a platform game are not as conventional (by conventional I say something like this). I am very lost and not know where to start and how to structure it. Thanks in advance.

  • How are undocumented functions discovered?

    - by Paska
Hi all, I've always wondered how do you find undocumented / private API ? Example the Apple undocumented / private API, Play Station, Windows Phone 7, Win32 Kernel, Windows API, hidden callback, etc... What tools do hackers use to find out about private and undocumented functions? Where can I read about peoples' experiences delving into private APIs and reverse engineering techniques which reveal the secrets which are normally explained in API documentation? thanks, A

  • Blending effect on textures

    - by joecks
Hi i am trying to build screen animation like flickering, interlace, color separation similar to old style malfunctioning Amiga screens. The intended effects are shown in this video. I am using libgdx and I already discovered the universal tween engine, which helps a lot to build transitional animations, but how should I approach those blending effects, any suggestions? I will specify my question once I learned more about libgdx, but maybe you could give me some hints already. Thanks!

  • Getting started with object detection - Image segmentation algorithm

    - by Dev Kanchen
Just getting started on a hobby object-detection project. My aim is to understand the underlying algorithms and to this end the overall accuracy of the results is (currently) more important than actual run-time. I'm starting with trying to find a good image segmentation algorithm that provide a good jump-off point for the object detection phase. The target images would be "real-world" scenes. I found two techniques which mirrored my thoughts on how to go about this: Graph-based Image Segmentation: http://www.cs.cornell.edu/~dph/papers/seg-ijcv.pdf Contour and Texture Analysis for Image Segmentation: http://www.eng.utah.edu/~bresee/compvision/files/MalikBLS.pdf The first one was really intuitive to understand and seems simple enough to implement, while the second was closer to my initial thoughts on how to go about this (combine color/intensity and texture information to find regions). But it's an order of magnitude more complex (at least for me). My question is - are there any other algorithms I should be looking at that provide the kind of results that these two, specific papers have arrived at. Are there updated versions of these techniques already floating around. Like I mentioned earlier, the goal is relative accuracy of image segmentation (with an eventual aim to achieve a degree of accuracy of object detection) over runtime, with the algorithm being able to segment an image into "naturally" or perceptually important components, as these two algorithms do (each to varying extents). Thanks! P.S.1: I found these two papers after a couple of days of refining my search terms and learning new ones relevant to the exact kind of techniques I was looking for. :) I have just about reached the end of my personal Google creativity, which is why I am finally here! Thanks for the help. P.S.2: I couldn't find good tags for this question. If some relevant ones exist, @mods please add them. P.S.3: I do not know if this is a better fit for cstheory.stackexchange (or even cs.stackexchange). I looked but cstheory seems more appropriate for intricate algorithmic discussions than a broad question like this. Also, I couldn't find any relevant tags there either! But please do move if appropriate.

Indeed the webpage http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/print-solutions/print-solutions/mono-multi-function-products/SCX-5737FW/SEE-spec tells me that the printer is supported up to Ubuntu 10. This true because it installs perfectly on my other machine with ubuntu 9. Can anyone help please? Thanks

  • Participate in open source project

    - by peraueb8921
Currently, I am through a very creative phase as a developer and I think it's a good time to contribute to an open source project. Not as "permanent" developer to a project but in a "help wanted" manner in many projects. The only open source hosting services that I know of are SourceForge and CodePlex. Any suggestions that will help me on this direction? Like other sites that support this. Thanks in advance.

  • How do you explain refactoring to a non-technical person?

    - by Benjol
(This question was inspired by the most-voted answer here) How do you go about explaining refactoring (and technical debt) to a non-technical person (typically a PHB or customer)? ("What, it's going to cost me a month of your work with no visible difference?!") UPDATE Thanks for all the answers so far, I think this list will provide several useful analogies to which we can point the appropriate people (though editing out references to PHBs may be wise!)

  • Using Single Image for Map in 2D Platformer

    - by Jon
I'm fairly new to game development, and have been messing around with Slick2D. Currently, my map consists of objects that are represented as rectangles. If I wanted to use am image simlar to: How would I be able to use this image to make a level? That question is a bit vague, but like I said, I'm new to game development and am not familiar with terminology or procedures. But going along with this question, how would I also use non-rectangular objects/platforms? Thanks

  • Conky: Possible to automatically display the correct days of the week?

    - by begtognen
I'd like to tweak my Conky so it automatically displays the days of the week correctly. So for example, if TODAY were Tuesday, it would look like this: Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday [etc.] And then tomorrow, automatically, it would look like this: Wednesday Thursday Friday [etc.] I know I can get it to display today's date like this: ${time %A} But how do I get it to display tomorrow's date? Thanks so much for any help/suggestions.
